Mildred J. Wright
June 28, 1931 to January 29, 1990
Mildred J. Wright, 58, Valparaiso, a native of Jasper County, died Monday, Jan. 29, at 1:30 a.m. in Porter Co. Hospital.
She was born June 28, 1931, in Gillam Township, Jasper County. She was married Sept. 11, 1970, to Warren E. Wright in Brookston. He died in 1986.
Mrs. Wright had lived in Valparaiso, since 1968, where she was a clerk for Northern Indiana Public Service Company.
Surviving are a son, Jay L Anderson, Katy, Texas; a daughter. Joyce Wilson, Knox; and a sister, Mrs. Kenneth (Joyce) Williams, Brookston.
Also surviving are six grandchildren.
The service was this morning at 10 a.m. (CST) in Bartholomew Funeral Home, Valparaiso.
Barbara Ann Owens
May 14, 1942 - July 21, 2003
Barbara Ann Owens, 61, of Lafayette, a former resident of Monon and Wheatfield, died Monday, July 21, 2003, in Monon.
She was born May 14, 1942, to the Rev. Jesse and Florida Stone Bailey. She married Clem A. "Sonny" Owens, at Rensselaer on September 25, 1963. He survives.
She was a graduate of Teft High School.
She was a member of the Milroy Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Clem of Monon, her mother, Florida Bailey of Rensselaer; a son, Raymond (Janet Jungles) Owens of Lafayette; daughters, Mary (Ralph) Durflinger of Monon and Leslie (Terry) Robbins of Rensselaer; a brother Charles (Peggy) Bailey of Lafayette; sisters, Geraldine (Claude) Napier and Brenda (Paul) Denham, both of Rensselaer, and Susan (Jim) Well of Medaryville; and nine grandchildren.
Her father Rev. Jesse Bailey and a sister are deceased.
Funeral services were Thursday, July 24, 2003, at United Baptist Church of Gillam Township with Pastor Johnny Miller officiating.
Burial was in Independence Cemetery.
Jackson Funeral Chapel, Rensselaer was in charge of arrangements.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Ronald McDonald House charity.
Byron F. "JR" Bales, Jr.
March 14, 1940 - October 28, 2003
Byron F. "JR" Bales, Jr., 63 of Mooreland, died Tuesday, October 28, 2003 at home following a brief illness.
He was born at Muncie on March 14, 1940 to Byron F. and Ruby (Barrett) Bales, Sr. He married Janet (Werking) Bales on September 10, 1961. She survives.
He was a lifelong farmer in the Mooreland community.
He was a volunteer fireman for the Mooreland Fire Department.
He had served on the Ag One Board of Directors.
He attended Mooreland Friends Church.
He also volunteered with the Mooreland Fair.
Other survivors include daughters Kimberly (Erick) VanMeter of Brookston, Melissa Ann Bales of Indianapolis, Len (Johnnie) Blevins of Wilkinson and Andrea (Kenny) Johnson of Mooreland; four grandchildren, four aunts and several cousins.
Funeral services were Thursday, October 30, at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle, with Carl Bennett officiating.
Burial was in Mooreland Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Little Door Cancer Services of Delaware County or the Mooreland Volunteer Fire Department.
Lloyd C. Barnhart
February 8, 1942 - September 30, 2003
Lloyd C. Barnhart, 61, of Monon, died Tuesday, September 30, 2003 at his residence.
He was born at Reynolds on February 8, 1942, to Mervin "Barney" Ray and Elizabeth Catherine Florence Johnson Barnhart. He married Sharon K. Hopkins at Monon on December 23, 1994. She survives.
He was a foreman over maintenance at the Department of Transportation in Medaryville.
He was a lifetime resident and was a 30-year member of the Monon Eagles Lodge No. 6519.
Other survivors include daughters, Pat Crane of Scottsburg, IN, Tina Lewis of Monon, Kay Vinard of Reynolds, Lisa Burbage of Omaha, Neb; son Jim Barnhart of Monon; stepdaughters, Nova Toosley of Medaryville, Tammy Dye of Monon, Desiree Law of Franklin, IN; stepsons, Mark Williams of Monon, James Williams of Monon, brothers. Ray "Moose" Barnhart of Monon, Donald "Butch" Barnhart of Monon; sisters, Kathryn Young of Monon, Debra Duncan of Monon, Becky Madlung of Monticello, Beverly Lowe of Morocco;. 21 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.
One brother is deceased.
Funeral services were at Kellogg Funeral Home on Saturday, October 4, with Rev. Don Newman officiating.
Burial was in Bedford Cemetery, Monon.

Ethel M. Barrett
November 17, 1917 - June 27, 2003
Ethel M. Oliver Barrett, 85, of Chalmers, died Friday, June 27, 2003, at St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Lafayette.
She was born November 17, 1917, in Tippecanoe County to Chester W. and Ruby Stanfield Oliver. She married Elmer D. Barrett, Sr. on December 20, 1934 in Lafayette. He died on May 4, 1989.
She attended Battle Ground and Brookston schools.
She was a former janitor at Chalmers and Brookston schools, and was also a homemaker.
She was a former member of the Chalmers Baptist Church.
She resided in Monticello Assisted living and Healthcare for the past two months.
Surviving are a son, Elmer "Sonny" (Linda) Barrett, Jr., of Chalmers; brothers Robert (Carolyn) Oliver of Burnettsville and Max (Jean) Oliver and Elmer (Betty) Oliver, both of Battle Ground; sisters, Irene Pierce of West Lafayette and Jane (Jim) Culver of Delphi; five grandchildren, Chris (Angela) Swisshelm, Jeremy Swisshelm, Trevor (Agnes) Swisshelm, Brooke and Evan Barrett; son-in-law, Bill Swisshelm of Schererville, IN and two great grandchildren.
Brothers, Joe, Chester, Charles and Clifford Oliver; sisters Agnes Oliver and Mabel Minardo; daughter Mary Ann Swisshelm, and grandson William Swisshelm are deceased.
Funeral services were Tuesday at Hartzler Funeral Home in Brookston with Rev. Jan Dimick officiating.
Burial was in Chalmers Community Cemetery.

Glen A. Boehning
May 30, 1930 - January 4, 2003
Glen A. Boehning, 72, of Francesville, died Saturday, January 4, 2003 at Jasper County Hospital, Rensselaer.
He was born in Francesville on May 30, 1930 the son of George H. and Emma P. Schmid Boehning. He married Eileen Kesler on June 5, 1954 in Monon. She survives.
He lived in Francesville all his life and was a farmer and truck driver. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed tractor pulls.
He was a 1949 graduate of Francesville High School.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1952 to 1954.
He was a member of the Apostolic Christian Church in Francesville and American Legion Post 228, Francesville.
Surviving besides his wife is a son Bill (Deb) Boehning of Francesville; a daughter Connie (Scott) Williams of Lafayette; a brother Stanley (Maxine) Boehning of Francesville and three grandchildren.
Funeral services were Tuesday at Apostolic Christian Church with the church ministers officiating. Burial was in Roseland Cemetery
at Francesville. Querry-Ulbricht Funeral Home was in charge.

John Edward "Ed" Cain
October 11, 1913 - October 22, 2003
John Edward "Ed" Cain, 90, of Brookston died Wednesday, October 22, 2003 at St. Mary Healthcare Center in Lafayette.
He was born in Round Grove on October 11, 1913. He married Charlotte B. Halsema at St. Bridgets Catholic Church, Barrydale on December 31, 1942.
He graduated from Gilboa Township High School in 1931.
He was a grain and livestock farmer, retiring in 1975.
He was a member of St. Charles Catholic Church of Otterbein.
He is a former member and charter member of the Serra Club of Lafayette.
He received the White County Farm Homestead Award and Herald Journal Farm Family Award in the 1980 Profile in Agriculture.
He is a past member of the Board of Directors for the Oxford Catholic Cemetery.
He enjoyed farming, sports, telling old stories and spending time with his grandchildren.
Other survivors include sons Dennis (Diana) Cain of Wolcott, Joseph (Gail) Cain of Brookston, Harold "Lou" (Juli) Cain of Broken Arrow, OkIa., Anthony "Tony" (Michelle) Cain of Brookston, Martin "Marty" (Cathy) Cain of Noblesville, Walter (Nancy) Cain of Oceanside, Calif., and Matthew "Matt" (Laura) Cain of Broken Arrow, Okla.; daughter-in-law Ann Cain of Wolcott; brothers Jim Cain of Lafayette, Stephen (Jean) Cain of Brookston; sisters Rose Rardon of Lafayette and Mary (Robert) Datzman of Fowler; 24 grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
Sons Donnie Cain, Neil Cain, Sam Cain, infant daughter, two infant sons, four brothers and three sisters are deceased.
Funeral services were at St. Charles Catholic Church, Otterbein. Burial was at Oxford Catholic Cemetery. Hartzler-Clapper Funeral Home, Brookston was in charge of arrangements.
Memorials may be made for masses or to the charity of the donor's choice.
Edith W. Clary
[1907?] - September 29, 2003
Edith W. Clary, 96, of Richmond, VA, died September 29, 2003 in Richmond.
She was formerly of Indiana.
She was the daughter of Charles and Mamie Orr Wright and the widow of Ralph R. Clary.
A son, Ralph M. Clary of Holland, MI; her daughter Molly L. Petrie, of Midlothian, VA; eight grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren and one great great grandchild survive her.
A memorial service was held at K.L. Jordan Casket & Urn Gallery in Richmond, VA on Friday, October 3, 2003.
