Mary Helen (Kiger) Davies
August 2, 1912 - October 10, 2003
Mary Helen (Kiger) Davies, 91, of Brookston, died Friday, October 10, 2003 at Twin Lakes Village, Monticello.
She was born at Tangier on August 2, 1912. She married Glenwood E. Kiger in Tangier. He is deceased. She later married George E. Davies, at Lafayette on January 26, 1979. He survives.
She attended Tangier High School.
She moved to Brookston in 1940.
She was a cashier at Purdue University in the Memorial Union until retiring in 1978. She had previously worked as a cook at the Brookston School for several years.
She was a member of the Eastside Assembly of God Church.
She was a former member and Sunday school teacher at Brookston Federated Church and held Bible study in her home for two years.
She enjoyed wintering in Florida where she would ride her three-wheel bicycle. She was very outgoing and enjoyed people.
Other survivors include sons Jack (Ann) Kiger of Brookston and William "Bill" (Joan) Kiger of Bradenton, Fla.; stepsons Richard (Diane) Davies of Appleton, Wis., Max (Diane) Davies and Larry (Barb) Davies, both of Lafayette; brother Gene (Frances) Millikan of Kingman; sisters Marge Brooks of Naples, Fla., and Elise Overley of Lafayette; many grandchildren, great grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Three sisters and two brothers are deceased.
Funeral services were Tuesday, October 14, 2003 at Hartzler-Clapper Funeral Home with Rev. Dan Pongratz officiating.
Burial was in Tippecanoe Memory Gardens Cemetery, West Lafayette.
Memorials may be made to the Eastside Assembly of God Church or the American Cancer Society.
Willie James
March 8, 1910 - December 7, 1987
Willie James, 77, 1004 Linda Ave., Monticello, died Monday, Dec. 7, in Monticello Community Healthcare Center, where he had been a patient for three days. He had been seriously ill two months.
He was born in Commisky, March 8, 1910, to Rufus and Oacle Burris James. His marriage to Margaret I. Carpenter was on Oct. 10, 1938. She died May 13, 1972.
He lived in Monticello and White County most of his life and was a member of St James Lutheran Church at Reynolds.
He was an employee of the White Co. Memorial Hospital for 15 years and operated the James' Cottages on Lake Shafer for 22 years. He also was a world traveler, having visited several countries during his lifetime.
Survivors include his mother, Oacle, Reynolds; one daughter, Mrs. Carl (Carol) Taskey, Monticello; one son, Russell, Staten Island, N.Y.; two brothers, Harold, Wolcott; and John A., Reynolds; eight sisters, Effie Wiese, Mary Ruemler and Betty Criswell, all of Reynolds; Dortha Zarse, Chalmers, Charlotte Swartz and Rosie Young, both of Indianapolis; Annbelle Clark, Las Vegas, Nev.; and Marilyn Montgomery, Louisville, KY.
One sister and one brother are deceased.
The funeral was at 10:30 a.m. today in Miller-Voorhis Funeral Home at Monticello, with the Rev. Stephen E Koenig officiating.
Burial was in Lutheran Cemetery
at Reynolds.
Goldie C. Ball
June 13, 1902 - November 19, 2003
Goldie C. Ball, 101, of Brookston, died Wednesday, November 19, 2003, at St. Anthony's Healthcare, Lafayette.
She was born in Porter County on June 13, 1902, to Carl "Charlie" and Albertina "Tena" Jahnz Schultz. She married Argel Ball at Battle Ground on October 1, 1925. He died July 24, 1975.
She and her husband had a farm southwest of Chalmers for 46 years until they retired to Brookston.
She was a member of the Chalmers Community Church.
She was a member of the Brookston Rebekah Lodge 376, joining in 1921, and was a member of the Past Noble Grand Club.
Surviving are a sister, Mabel Schultz of Brookston and several nieces and nephews.
Brothers, Paul, Arthur and Clarence Schultz, are deceased.
Funeral services were held at the Hartzler-Clapper Funeral Home on Saturday with Rev. William Henderson officiating.
Burial was in Chalmers Community Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or American Heart Foundation.
Ray C. Fulmer
November 21, 1924 - September 19, 2003
Ray C. Fulmer, 78, of Francesville, died Friday, September 19, 2003, at Pulaski Memorial Hospital, Winamac.
He was born November 21, 1924, in Monon, and had lived in the Francesville area most of his life.
He married Audrey E. Woodward on August 13, 1961, in Medaryville.
He was a farmer. He served in the Army in World War II.
He enjoyed fishing.
Surviving is a daughter Lisa L. (Larry) Brady of Francesville; a son, Kevin R. (Janine) Fulmer of Medaryville, and six grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Cairine Sewell; two sisters, Marjorie Fulmer and Phyllis Haring; and two brothers, Wade Fulmer and Richard Fulmer.
Funeral Services were Tuesday at Querry-Ulbricht Funeral Home in Francesville with Rev. Ronald Schiml officiating. Burial was in Roseland Cemetery. Francesville.
Helen J. "Hap" Good
February 28, 1927 - September 30, 2003
Helen J. "Hap" Good, 76, of the Buffalo community, died Tuesday, September 30, 2003, at her residence.
She was born February 28, 1927 to Marrell and Agnes Hughes Sluyter. She married J. Alvin Good at Reynolds on January 2, 1947. He is deceased.
She had lived in the Buffalo community most of her life and was a graduate of Buffalo High School.
She had worked at Bryan Manufacturing, Monticello RCA plant and P.F.T. in Monon.
She enjoyed fishing, hunting mushrooms, putting puzzles together and playing cards.
Survivors include daughter, Linda (Steve) Carter of Monticello, brothers Donald "Sonny" Sluyter of Reynolds, Richard (Clara) Sluyter of Fort Wayne; sister Norma (Robert) Carr of Sebring, Florida; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A daughter, Peggy Durham and a grandson, Mike Durham are deceased.
Funeral services were on Friday, October 3, 2003, at Miller-Roscka Funeral Home with Rev. Keith Raderstorf officiating. Burial was in Buffalo Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to White County Chapter of the American Cancer Society.
Leslie 'Abe' Hicks
July 31, 1916 - January 22, 1990
Leslie 'Abe' Hicks, 73, Chalmers, died Monday, Jan. 22, in his home, at 8:45 a.m. He had been in failing health for several years.
He was born July 31, 1916, to Jesse Homer and Julia Edith Osborn Hicks, in Montgomery County. He was married Dec. 23, 1945, to Lorene 'Rene' Edwards, in Lafayette. She survives.
He moved from Monticello to Chalmers, in 1965. He was a 20 year employee of Hicks Gas, retiring in 1972.
He served in the Army in World War II and was in central Europe. He was a member of Chalmers American Legion Post 268.
Surviving with his wife are two sons, Leslie Jr., Lafayette and James, Chalmers; two daughters, Mrs. Bruce (Edith) Glass, Oklahoma City, Okla., and Mrs. Richard (Nancy) Parker, Monticello; two brothers, Harold, Lafayette and Jesse, Monticello; three sisters, Mrs. James (Grace) Taylor, Battle Ground, Mrs. Edith Virden, Lafayette and Mrs. Don (Donna) Brumfield, Oklahoma City; and 12 grandchildren. Three brothers and four sisters are deceased.
Services were conducted today at 11 a.m. at Hartzler Funeral Home, Brookston. Burial was in IOOF Cemetery, Brookston with military graveside rites by Chalmers American Legion.
Donald L. "Don["] Hurley
August 12, 1937 - October 20, 2003
Donald L. "Don" Hurley, 66, of Brookston died Monday, October 20, 2003, at St. Elizabeth Medical Center Emergency Room, Lafayette.
He was born at Champaign, Ill., on August 12, 1937, to Vernon K. and Leana Jzanathea Royer Hurley. He married Elvira "Vera" Wust at Mannheim, Germany on May 8, 1959. She survives.
He and his wife had lived in the Brookston community for three years.
He retired in 1975 from the U.S. Army serving 20 years. He had served in Germany for 16 years and had also served in Vietnam from 1969-1970.
He had also retired from the U.S. Postal Service in 1993, after working for nine years. He had worked at the Monticello, Reynolds and Lafayette post offices. He was a member of the Monticello American Legion, VFW and AMVETS posts and Redmens Lodge.
He collected cars, all kinds of military memorabilia and pigs. He loved camping, traveling and whistling. He was also a mechanic who enjoyed working on cars and trucks.
Other survivors include sons Tom Hurley of Brookston and Roger Hurley (fiancee Phyllis Reeves) of Reynolds; stepdaughters Theresa (Dennis) Graves of Lafayette; a sister Carol Neece of Greenwood, five grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
An infant son, Donald L. Hurley, Jr., two sisters and six brothers are deceased.
Funeral services were at Chalmers Cemetery
on Friday with Rev. Dr. Lelan McReynolds officiating.
Miller-Roscka Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Aaron Paul LaGue
February 21, 1975 - August 27, 2003
Aaron Paul LaGue, 28, of Delphi died Wednesday, August 27, 2003, at his residence.
He was born in Lafayette on February 21, 1975, to Robert and Patti LaGue. He married Ann Marie Dilling in Pine Grove Church, Delphi on October 9, 1993. She survives.
He was a lifelong resident of Brookston and graduated from Frontier High School May 29, 1999.
He worked for Marsh Supermarket in Lafayette as the French pastry chef.
He had a great sense of humor. He loved the outdoors, especially fishing, and ] enjoyed NASCAR racing and video games.
Other survivors include his children at home, Cassandra Ann and Catrina Nicole LaGue; his parents Robert and Patti LaGue of Brookston; sisters, Amber (Dan) Stingley of Lafayette and Amelia LaGue of Brookston; his grandparents, Marwin and Amy LaGue of Brookston; and many aunts, uncles and cousins and nephews.
Services were Saturday, August 30, 2003 at Hartzler-Clapper Funeral Home with Rev. Ed Selvidge officiating.
Interment was in IOOF Cemetery
in Brookston.
