Lucille Lear

May 4, 1916 - October 8, 2003
Lucille Lear, 87, of Brookston, died Wednesday, October 8, 2003, at St. Elizabeth Medical Center, in Lafayette. She had been in Heritage Healthcare Center since June.

She was born in Colfax on May 4, 1916. She married Harvey E. Lear at Lafayette on August 26, 1958. He is deceased.

She started as a nurses aide at St. Elizabeth Medical Center in 1955 and retired as Ward Secretary in 1980.

She was a member of the St. Elizabeth retirees club.

She enjoyed driving around Brookston and interaction with others.

Survivors include a daughter, Lisa Lear of Brookston; brothers, Jerry (Ann) Lanum of Crawfordsville, Barton (June) Lanum of Lafayette and Jack (Beverly) Lanum of Frankfort; sisters, Lois Carlson of North Port, Fla., and Maxine Leathers of Durham, N.C.

Two sisters and one brother are deceased.

Funeral services were Monday, October 13, 2003, at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Lafayette with Father Timothy Alkire officiating. Burial was in Brookston IOOF Cemetery.

Hartzler-Clapper Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

George E. Logan

November 16, 1923 - November 30, 1997
George E. Logan, 74, Francesville, died Sunday, Nov. 30, at 10:45 am. at his residence.

He was born in Jasper County, Nov. 16, 1923 to Thomas and Maude Culp Logan. He was married June 26, 1956, to Theresa Ann Tuberty in St. Joseph Catholic Church in Kentland. She survives.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1943-1946.

He was a garment cutter for H.D. Lee Company in South Bend. He later owned and operated a farm in Jasper County. He was former owner of Logans Tavern in Francesville and worked for Case Implements at Francesville. He was also a salesman for Maintenance Products Inc. of Lowell.

He was a member of St. Frances Catholic Church of Francesville.

He was a member of American Legion Post No. 228 of Francesville, VFW Post No. 1728 of Winamac, Jasper County Voiture 1251 and 40 & 8 National Past Chef De Gare.

He is survived by . his wife; a daughter, Mrs. Carl (Rita) Hammack of Algonquin, Ill.; two sisters, Mabel Vogt, Francesville and Dorothea Stotler, Winamac; three brothers, Foster of Portage, Orville of Brookston and Lloyd of Francesville; and two grandchildren.

A sister, three brothers and three daughters are deceased.

Funeral services were held today at 11 a.m. in St. Frances Solano Catholic Church, Francesville, with the Rev. Paul R. White officiating.

The Querry-Ulbricht Funeral Home, Francesville was in charge of the arrangements.

Burial was in the Roseland Cemetery, Francesville.

Memorials may be given to the Jasper Co. Hospital Home Medical and Hospice.

Charles Ray Spear

March 6, 1908 - August 20, 2000
Charles Ray Spear, 92, of Monticello, died Sunday, August 20, 2000 at White County Memorial Hospital.

He was born on March 6, 1908 in Tompkinsville, KY to James Madison and Lucy Hanna Rush Spear. He married Laurenia Allen in Lafayette on June 19, 1940. She died on January 30, 1980.

He came to White County in 1920 and lived in Monticello and Monon.

He worked at RCA in Monticello for 27 years and retired in 1973. He was a chef and cook at several restaurants. He managed Spear TNT Root Beer stand at Indiana Beach. He also had worked at Aufenburg Funeral Home in Monticello.

He was a member of First Baptist Church in Monticello.

He was a wonderful father and grandfather and loved family vacations.

Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Herb (Carolyn) Clear of Flora and Mrs. Roger (Judy) Owens of Monticello; six grandchildren and 15 grandchildren. Four brothers and two sisters are deceased.

Funeral services were at Voorhis-Draper Funeral Home with Rev. Mark A. Pittman officiating.

Burial was in Chalmers Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Retinitis Pigmentosa Foundation or First Baptist Church.

Edna Lucille Miller Spear

August 19, 1903 - February 20, 1992
Edna Lucille Miller Spear, 88, formerly of Chalmers, died Thursday, Feb. 20, in Monticello Healthcare Center, where she had been a resident since June18, 1982.

She was born Aug. 19, 1903, to William Charles and Elizabeth Allen Miller, in Corydon. She was married Aug. 20, 1921, to Dollis E. pear, in Hoopston, Ill. and he expired Oct. 28, 1968.

After her family moved to White County, when she was 11 years old, she attended Chalmers High School.

She was a member of Chalmers Community Church and past District No. 20 Deputy of the Rebekah Lodge. She also was a former member of the Chalmers American Legion Auxiliary and Chalmers Home Extension Club.

Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Robert (Dorothy) Bower, Kentland; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Two brothers, a sister and a son are deceased.

The funeral was Saturday in the Chalmers Community Church, with the Rev. Loren Shuman officiating. Hartzler Funeral Home in Brookston was in charge of the service.

Burial was in Chalmers Community Cemetery.

George "Butch" W. Steele, Jr.

May 8, 1943 - October 6, 2003
George "Butch" W. Steele, Jr., 60, of Lee, Ind., died Monday, October 6, 2003 at Home Hospital in Lafayette following a two week illness.

He was born in Monon on May 8, 1943, the son of George W. Sr. and. Marjorie Frances Page Steele.

He married Joyce E. Lucas on September 4, 1965, in Monticello. She survives.

He worked for the Monon Railroad for 13 years and served as an E4 in the U.S. Navy from 1960 — 64, serving during the Cuban Missile Crisis.

He was a lifelong resident of the Monon community.

He was a charter member of the VFW Lodge, Reynolds, and a former member of the Monon Eagles Lodge.

Other survivors include a daughter, Anna (John) M. Irvine, of Lee, Ind., and three sons, Rich (Sheila) Steele, N.S.W.C., Crane, Ind., Wayne (Tina) Steele, Reynolds, Ind., and Mark (Arla) R. Shindelar, Virginia Beach, VA; one brother, Larry (Frankie) Steele of Monon and one sister, Marjorie (Larry) Ann Selby, of Monon. He had 5 grandchildren. One granddaughter is deceased.

Visitation will be Wednesday from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Kellogg Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, October 9, 2003 at the funeral home with Rev. Don Newman officiating.

Burial will be in Bedford Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Narcolepsy Foundation.

Jessie M. Stockment

August 3, 1895 - June 24, 1990
Jessie M. Stockment, 94, Regency Place Nursing Home, formerly of Monticello, died Sunday, June 24, in Home Hospital at Lafayette.

She was born Aug. 3, 1895, to Mr. and Mrs. William Spencer, in White County. She was married to Wilbert Stockment in Remington. He died in 1958.

She was a graduate of Chalmers High School and Valparaiso University. She taught school in the Demotte community. She lived in Monticello for approximately 20 years before moving to the nursing home 10 years ago.

She and her husband farmed in the Wolcott area for many years. She was a member of the Meadow Lake Presbyterian Church near Wolcott and a member of the Wolcott Legion Auxiliary.

Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Mildred Headdy, Sarasota, Florida; and Mrs. Eileen Marasco, Tenafly, N.J.; seven grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; and two sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Lauer, Oroville, Calif., and Mrs. Mary Smith, Sacramento, Calif. One son and one daughter are deceased.

The funeral was Wednesday at Stitz Funeral Home in Remington with the Rev. Glen Campbell officiating. Burial was at Remington Cemetery.

Selma Strantz

March 9, 1926 - May 7, 2001
Selma Wagner Strantz, 75, 906 Quentin St., Monticello died Monday, May 7, 2001 at her residence. She had been in failing health for three years.

She was born March 9, 1926, in Brookston, to Fred J. and Rosina Ruemler Wagner. She married Gene Strantz on September 19, 1948, at St. James Lutheran Church in Reynolds. He survives.

She was a member of the Lutheran Church of our Savior, Monticello. She was a Lutheran braille worker who made Bibles for the blind.

She was a member of Chalmers Kappa Kappa Sigma sorority (Beta Chapter) and Chalmers American Legion Auxiliary #268.

Following Business College, she worked at Chalmers Co-op and in 1991 retired from Dye Lumber Co., Monticello, as bookkeeper after 25 years.

Surviving with her husband are two sons, Joseph (Lynn) Strantz, Darien, Ill. and Jerry Strantz of Francesville; three daughters, Julie (Larry) Brown of Eaton, Ind., Jan (Steve) Lord of Burnettsville and Jill Dunn of Indianapolis; two brothers, William R. (Esther) Wagner and James F. (Doris) Wagner, both of Brookston; a sister, Maxine (Devon) Yoder of Brookston; 14 grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. today (Wednesday) at Hartzler Funeral Home, Brookston, and one hour prior to service at the Lutheran Church of Our Savior, Monticello. Funeral services are scheduled Thursday at 10 a.m. at the church, with Rev. William A. Parsons officiating.

Burial will be at Chalmers Community Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Lutheran Church of Our Savior.

Russell 'Jake' Summers

June 2, 1938 - September 4, 1998
Russell "Jake" Summers, 60, of Brookston, died Sept. 4, at his home.

He was born June 2, 1938, to Amos Russell and Gladys Marie Escue Summers, in Lafayette. He was married Aug. 14, 1954, to Nancy Chapman, in Brookston, and she survives.

He graduated in 1956 from Brookston High School.

He worked for A.E. Staley, Lafayette, for 25 years. He retired August 1, 1998.

He was a member of the Badger Grove Community Baptist Church.

Surviving with his wife are three sons, Russell E. Jr. of Lafayette and Byron and Todd, both of Brookston; and seven grandchildren.

A sister is deceased.

Funeral services were at Hartzler Funeral Home, Brookston.

Burial was in IOOF Cemetery, Brookston.

Memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society.
