William R. "Bill" Baker

William R. "Bill" Baker, 77, of Monticello died December 15, 2003 at St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Lafayette.
He was born in Monon on November 6, 1926 to Leslie and Irene Clerget Baker.
He married Mary Jane Christensen on June 28, 1953 in Monon. She survives.
He had lived in White County all of his life and was a 1944 graduate of Monon High School.
He was an Army veteran, serving during World War II.
He had worked for many years for the Monon L&N, CSX and Amtrak Railroad and was a life member of the retired Railway Employees.
He loved to fish and play golf.
Surviving beside his wife are a daughter, Mary Beth (John) Watts of Monticello; sons Maurice Baker of Monticello and Howard Baker of Monticello; sisters Shirley (Hank) Balcom of Pennsylvania, Carole (Gerry) Stinson of Monon; brothers Don (Jean) Baker of Buffalo and Joe Baker of Fresno, Calif.; and three grandchildren.
Brothers Earl and Jerry Baker and one grandson preceded him in death.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Wednesday, December 17, 2003, at Miller-Roscka Funeral Home in Monticello.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday with Rev. James R. Copeland officiating.
Burial will be at the Bedford Cemetery, Monon.
Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
Truman W. Westphal
June 25, 1908 - July 12, 2002
Truman W. Westphal, 94, of Reynolds, died Friday, July 12, 2002, at his residence.
He was born June 25, 1908, in Reynolds, to Carl and Virginia Shoemaker Westphal.
He married Louella Sadie Locks, on June 20, 1933, in Flint, Michigan. She survives.
He lived n Reynolds all of his life, and was a graduate of Reynolds High School
He was the owner of the Standard service station, IGA grocery store and hardware store all in Reynolds.
He was self employed and loved working with people. He was also a buyer/seller of feeder pigs.
He was a member of the Reynolds United Methodist Church, where he served for many years as superintendent, trustee and a board member of the church.
Surviving with his wife are a daughter, Sonja (Carl) Westphal Shivley of Chalmers; son Richard C. (Donna) Westphal of Reynolds; eight grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren.
A sister, Lucille Westphal Cords and a brother Thornton Westphal are deceased.
Funeral services were this morning at Reynolds United Methodist Church with Rev. Bryan L. Ton, Rev. James R. Copeland and the Rev. Kaye Bass officiating. Miller-Roscka Funeral Home was in charge.
Burial was in Riverside I.O.O.F. Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Reynolds United Methodist Church.
Paul Malchow
December 13, 1932 - June 21, 2004
Lt. Col. Paul H. Malchow, 71, of Francesville, died Monday, June 21, 2004 at St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Lafayette.
He was born December 13, 1932 in Francesville, the son of Harry F. and Marie O. Westphal Malchow.
He married Judith G. Hawley on June 22, 1963, in South Bend. She survives
He was a 1952 graduate of Francesville High School.
He served for eight years in the U. S. Navy during the Korean Conflict, sailing off on the USS Hollis and the USS Bottineau.
He served 18 years in the Indiana Guard Reserve.
He was a farmer. He also worked as a security guard and bus driver at Indiana Beach for 26 years.
He was a West Central School bus driver for 22 years.
He was a Little League coach for 10 years.
He was a member of the Tippecanoe Christian Church and served as an Elder.
He was a member of the American Legion in Rensselaer, and the Navy Club, AMVETS, and the 40 & 8.
He enjoyed amateur figure and hockey skating.
Other survivors include a daughter, Lisa Malchow of Francesville; a son, Aaron Malchow of Francesville, and family members Jim & Michelle Reynolds of Monticello; Cheyenne and Bryanne of Monticello.
A sister, Gloria Malchow; a brother Glen Malchow; a nephew, Kevin Malchow; and nieces Glenda Malchow and Sabrina Bailey preceded him in death.
Funeral Services were Thursday at the Tippecanoe Christian Church with Ed Clark officiating.
Burial was in Tippecanoe Cemetery. Querry-Ulbricht Funeral Home, Francesville, was in charge of services.
Lowell F. Barner
December 1, 1925 - April 10, 2004
Lowell F. Barner, 78, of Monon, died Saturday, April 10, 2004, at Twin Lakes Village in Monticello.
He was born December 1, 1925 at Monon, the son of Bloice B. and Esther E. Ehnen Barner.
He was a retired farmer and was a lifetime member of the community.
He graduated from Monon High School in 1944.
He served in World War II as a corporal in the 64th Army Field Artillery Battalion.
He was very active in the local Democratic political party.
He was a former member of the North White School Board and had served as the Monon Township trustee for several years.
He was a member of the Monon United Methodist Church.
He was a 50 year member and very active in the Monon Masonic Lodge.
Survivors include a daughter Diane (Wayne) Martin of Charlotte, N.C. and a son Barry Barner of Lafayette; sisters Mary K. Dice of Lehigh Acres, Florida, Eloise (Emil) Koekenberg and Merna M. Rinker, both of Monon; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services were Tuesday at Kellogg Funeral Home with Rev. James Copeland officiating.
Burial was at Bedford Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Monon United Methodist Church or the American Heart Association.
Walter A. "Bud" Bartlett
October 11, 1923 - March 15, 2004
Walter A. "Bud" Bartlett, 80, of Monon died Monday, March 15, 2004 at St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Lafayette.
He was in failing health since July 2003.
He was born October 11, 1923 in Benton County, the son of Frank Lee and Mary Catherine Bartlett.
He married Mona M. Tascone in Reynolds Indiana on May 28, 1994. She survives.
He lived in White County most of his life and was a World War II Navy veteran, serving at Pearl Harbor.
While in the service, one of his best friends was Ernest Borgnine the actor.
After the war, Bud had the opportunity to go on location to see Ernest Borgnine filming one of his movies.
He owned a DX Bulk Plant in Monticello and was a farmer.
He also had worked at the former Chemtron (Alloy Rods) where he was a welding inspector.
He had also worked at Douglas Fertilizer Plant (now Monticello Farm Service), both of Monticello.
He was a member of the White County Saddle Club and had served as president.
Bud enjoyed square dancing, traveling, rodeos and Branson, Missouri.
Other survivors include; a daughter, Linda M. (James) Spangle, Monticello, Ind.; a son, John D. (Lisa) Bartlett of Belfast, Ireland; a step-daughter, Cheryl Ann (Harold) Beckefeld, Star City, Ind.; four stepsons, Daniel K. Beckefeld, Plainfield, Ind., Ray P. Beckefeld, Lafayette, Ind., Darrin (Dana) Beckefeld, Chicago, Ill., Gary (Dana) Beckefeld, New Lenox, Ill.; seven grandchildren and step-grandchildren, five great grandchildren and one step-great-grandson.
One sister, Louise Gilmore and three brothers, Willard, Mike and George Bartlett are deceased.
Friends may call at the Miller-Roscka Funeral Home, Monticello on Friday, March 19, 2004 from 4-8 p.m.
Funeral services will be at the Miller-Roscka Funeral Home at 10:30 a.m. with Pastor Les Bucher officiating.
Burial will be at Riverview IOOF Cemetery, Monticello.
Bryce Joseph and Bradie Lea Benner
July 1, 2004 - July 1, 2004 (Bryce); July 2, 2004 (Bradie)
Infant Bryce Joseph Benner died Thursday, July 1, 2004 at Home Hospital in Lafayette. His twin sister, Bradie Lea Benner died on Friday, July 2, 2004 at Home Hospital in Lafayette.
The twins were born at Home Hospital on July 1, 2004, to Jeremy J. and Denise L. Allen Benner of Reynolds.
Other survivors include paternal grandparents, Kenneth and Susan Benner of Fowler; maternal grandparents, Ron and Sharon Allen of Reynolds; maternal great-grandparents, Phyllis Allen of Reynolds and Dick and Betty Brown of Cape Coral, Florida; special great-grandparents, Ed and Elizabeth Brehmer of Reynolds.
Funeral services were Monday at Kellogg Funeral Home with Rev. Bryan Ton officiating.
Burial was in Bedford Cemetery.
Melvin R. Blake
July 25, 1930 - March 19, 2004
Melvin R. Blake, 73, of Brookston, died Friday, March 19, 2004, at Lafayette Home Hospital.
He was born at Kokomo on July 25, 1930.
He married Louise Jackman at Montezuma, Ind., on May 3, 1951. She survives.
He was raised in Hillsdale, Ind., where he graduated from Hillsdale High School in 1948.
His family moved to Brookston in 1959 and has lived there ever since.
He served in the US Army from 1948 to 1952 and during the
Korean War as a Ski Trooper.
He was stationed in Big Delta, Alaska, serving two years in Active Survival with the Tenth Mountain service.
He worked in the strip mines in Newport from 1952-1959.
He began working at Ross Gear (now TRW) in 1959 as a machinist, where he retired after 30 years of service in 1988.
He also farmed part time for 35 years.
He was a member of the Chalmers American Legion for 14 years.
His hobbies were fishing, hunting and playing cards.
Other survivors include daughters, Cathy (Don) Rauch of Lafayette, Carol (Jerry) Thompson of Chalmers, Carmen Weiderhaft (companion Jack Platt) of Brookston; sons Jim (Julie) Blake and Ed Blake (companion Jill Dunn) all of Brookston; sisters, Mardell (Rex) Earles and Madonna (Dennis) Hoggatt all of Clinton, Marjorie (Don) Judson of Sesser, Ill., Myra (Mike) Todd of Montezuma and Becky (Dan) Vladetich of Royal Center; brothers Merle (Sharon) Blake of Montezuma and Marion Blake of Indianapolis and six grandchildren.
A sister, Millie Trittipo is deceased.
Funeral Services were Tuesday at Hartzler-Clapper Funeral Home with Rev. Dr. Lelan D. McReynolds officiating.
Burial was at the Brookston IOOF Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Brookston Federated Church or the Frontier Athletic Department.
