Walter H. Short

Feb. 22, 1936 -- Aug. 15, 2003

ALEXANDRIA -- Walter H. Short, 67, died Aug. 15, 2003, as the result of an auto accident near Tucumcari, N.M.

He was born Feb. 22, 1936, in Celina, Tenn., the son of Charlie and Myrtle Lynn Short. He had lived in Alexandria since 1999 when he moved from Anderson.

Walt served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

Walt was a motorcycle man. He and his wife, Norma, traveled the country on his Gold Wing, a pastime which he thoroughly enjoyed. He was also an avid fan of NASCAR racing, Chicago Cubs baseball, Indiana Pacers basketball and Indianapolis Colts football. Walt was a "tinkerer" and delighted in toying with anything mechanical. He truly was a "jack of all trades and a master of none." He was "Papaw" to the neighborhood kids. If there was a flat bicycle tire or broken chain, Papaw would fix it. He was an "angel" in the night when you had a flat tire, ran out of gas or had a dead battery. He was the heart and backbone of his family and will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed.

(Gresham) Short of Alexandria, whom he married Nov. 7, 1956; a son, David (wife, Renea) Short of Anderson; two daughters, Vicki Short and Donna Burnett, both of Anderson; eight grandchildren, Jeremy (wife, Shannon) Johnson, Stephanie Davis, Chad Lee, Adrienne Lee, Natalie Burnett, Megan Short, Chase Short and Sarah Short; five great-grandchildren, Shianne Lee, Blake Johnson, Jade Johnson, Rayenne Davis and Rodney King III; two sisters, Jewel Lambert and Eva Pitcock, both of Westfield; and several nieces and nephews.

Interment will follow at Anderson Memorial Park Cemetery, Anderson, where military honors will be provided by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 266.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made, through the funeral home, to the Second Harvest Food Bank of East Central Indiana in Anderson.
