William "Bill" Briggs

March 1, 1941 - June 6, 2013

William R. Briggs, 72, of Clay City, died June 6, 2013, at Union Hospital, following a brief illness.

Bill was born March 1, 1941 in Richland Center, Wisconsin the son of William M. and Charlotte (Keyes) Briggs. He graduated from Lafayette Jefferson High School with the class of 1959 and then Purdue University in 1967 with a degree in Educational Industrial Technology. Bill worked for Ross Gear a division of T.R.W. as a manager. He also worked for Stuart Moore Oil Corporation in Centerpoint, Indiana as a salesman. In his free time he enjoyed woodworking, bird watching and volunteering. Most of all he enjoyed fishing. Following his retirement he spent much of his time out doors and on his lake fishing at his home which he named “Camp David”.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge 562 as well as the Clay City First Church of Christ.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Barbara Ann Briggs.

He is survived by two sons: William “Chip” Briggs of St. Petersburg, FL and George “G.R.” of Indianapolis, Indiana; a grandson Austin James Briggs of Florida; a niece Terri Moore (John) of Centerpoint; four nephews Tom Hamilton (Eileen) of Madisonville, KY, Tim Hamilton (Jamie Kodey) of Brownsburg, Todd Hamilton (Cindy) Dade City, FL and Tracy Hamilton of Indianapolis as well as many extended family members from across the country.

Funeral services will be at French Funeral Home, 421 E. National Ave, Brazil, IN 47834 at 7pm, Friday, June 14, 2013. Visitation will be at the funeral home Friday, from 4pm until time of services. Burial will take place in Tippecanoe Memory Gardens, in West Lafayette, IN Saturday, June 15, 2013 at 1:00pm.

In lieu of flowers donations may be to VistaCare / Gentiva Hospice Foundation 3401 S. 4th St. Terre Haute, IN 47802.

Leo “Lee” Thompson

September 21, 1920 - June 10, 2013

Leo “Lee” Thompson, 92, of Poland, passed away at Owen Valley Health Center on June 10, 2013.

Lee was born September 21, 1920 in West Virginia the son of the late William and Minnie (Pettit) Thompson. Lee married the late Beatrice "Bea" (Lowe) Thompson in July 1941. Bea passed away in February of 1976. Lee married Hazel (LaMew) Spiceland on November 1, 1980. Lee worked at a water company as an Engineer in West Virginia early on in his career. He then worked at Arizona State University as a Locksmith, where he retired after twenty years of service in January 1984.

Lee was a member of the Church of Christ in Brazil. In his spare time he enjoyed being very handy and took pride in being able to fix anything.

Lee was preceded in death by his parents; first wife: Beatrice "Bea" Thompson; son: Phillip Thompson; brothers: Earl Thompson, Lonnie Thompson, Harry Thompson, Ernest Thompson, Woodrow Thompson.

He is survived by his wife of 32 years Hazel Thompson; children: Daniel Lee Thompson, David Houston Thompson and wife Edna Raye, Rebbecca Irene Hardman and husband Paul, David Spiceland and wife Jeanie, Dan Spiceland and wife Elizabeth “Liz”, Stephen Spiceland and wife Vickie; grandchildren: Maurice, Elizabeth, Marcie, Christina, Shellie, Amanda, Justin, Dan, Frank, Rachel, Joshua, Sara, Andrew; many great grandchildren; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

A graveside service will be Thursday, June 13, 2013 at 11am at Poland Zion cemetery in Poland, Indiana with Dan Spiceland officiating.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Shults-Lewis Child and Family Services, Inc., P.O. Box 471 Valparaiso, IN 46384.

Margaret "Peggy" Evitts

August 19, 1949 - June 10, 2013

Margaret “Peggy” Grace Evitts, 63, of Knightsville, IN and formerly of West Terre Haute, passed away at Cloverleaf Health Care June 10, 2013 following a lengthy illness.

Peggy was born in Terre Haute, August 19, 1949 the daughter of John and Ruth (Heyen) Cobble. She graduated from West Vigo High School with the class of 1966. Although she spent most of her life caring for her family she did work as a Certified Nurses Aid, for the Sisters of Providence for a short period of time.

She enjoyed spending time with her family, reading to her grandchildren and singing praise and worship music.

She married Albert Franklin Evitts in 1972. He preceded her in death February 2, 2007. She was also preceded in death by her parents John and Ruth Cobble.

She is survived by her daughter Michelle Estep and fiancé Jeff Hunt of West Terre Haute; three sons: John Evitts of Terre Haute, Brent Evitts of Terre Haute and Trent Evitts of West Terre Haute as well as 7 grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held at Restlawn cemetery, Friday, June 14, 2013 at 1:00pm. French Funeral Home in Brazil has been entrusted with her care.

Shyanne Renee Clark

November 08, 1994 - June 09, 2013

Shyanne Renee Clark, 18, of Brazil, passed away on June 9, 2013 at her residence.

Shyanne was born on November 8, 1994, in Brazil, the daughter of James Alan Clark and Amanda Sue Randall. Shyanne lived with her grandparents John A Randall and Connie Sue Randall. She attended Northview High School.

In her spare time she enjoyed music, video games, but had a passion for drawing and animals, especially her dogs and cats. What meant the most to her though, was being with her family and friends.

She is preceded in death by her grandfather: John A Randall; great grandmother: Goldie Head; and a cousin: Justin Mathew Randall.

Shyanne is survived by her grandmother Connie Randall; parents: James Alan Clark and Amanda Randall; brothers: John William Clark, Zackary Alan Clark; as well as several aunts, uncles, cousins, and extended family and friends.

The family has entrusted French Funeral Home with her care. Per her wishes cremation will take place. A memorial gathering will take place at a later date.

Lillian Elizabeth (Brown) Whitaker Morlan

June 5, 1915 - June 5, 2013

Lillian Elizabeth (Brown) Whitaker Morlan, of Brazil, formerly of Greencastle, went home to be with her Lord on her 98th birthday, June 5, 2013.

Liz, as she was called, was born on June 5, 1915 to Amos C. and Osa (Heady) Brown in Greencastle, Indiana.

Liz was a member of the First Christian Church, in Brazil. She was a member of the Daughters of Ruth Class and helped in the Children’s Beginners Department for 40 years. She was a past member of the Knightsville Order of Eastern Star.

Preceding her in death was her husband James R. Morlan; daughters: Roxie Joan Whitaker and Nancy Elaine White; granddaughter Beth Ann Jones and great-grandchildren: Erica Miller and Colton Jones; brothers: Roscoe, George, Ray and Howard Brown.

Liz is survived by her children: Betty Shoemaker and husband John of Greencastle, Sondra Burris and husband Crawford of Greencastle, Ted Whitaker and wife Jeanne of Harmony, Sue Jones and husband David of Brazil, and Robin Reckerd and husband Dan of Plainfield; 19 grandchildren: Janice Rissot (Jeff), Doug Shoemaker, Bruce Burris (Jeanne), Pam Miller (Greg), Brad Burris (Linda), Jo Ellen Rains (Allan), Amy Whitaker, Mitch Whitaker (Jamy), Craig Whitaker (Emilee), Jason Jones (Andrea), Sarah Jones, Shane White (Shane Renee), Ben White (Jacob Beck), Amanda Bonilla (Martin), Heather Reckerd, Jessica Reckerd, Adam Reckerd, Matt Whitaker, and Mike Whitaker; 32 great grandchildren and 8 great-great grandchildren along with many other extended family members.

Elizabeth loved her family and her Lord.

Funeral Services will be held at Lawson – Miller Chapel, Monday, June 10, 2013 at 1:00pm with Pastor Chris Gregg officiating. Burial will follow at Calcutta cemetery. Visitation will be at the funeral home Monday from 11am until time of services.

Janet E. Byers

September 11, 1943 - June 09, 2013

Janet E. Byers, 69 of Brazil, formerly of Gallipolis, OH, passed away June 9, 2013 at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis. She was born September 11, 1943 in Brisbane, Australia, the daughter of Gilbert Ellsworth Daniel and Estelle E. Cowderoy Daniel. At the age of 5, her family left Australia and moved to the United States. On September 1, 1967, Janet was united in marriage to John D. Byers. Together they lived in Gallipolis, OH, Denver, CO, and in 2008 they moved to Brazil, IN. While in Gallipolis, Janet worked in the Clerk of Courts Office. Later, while in Denver, she worked her way through the ranks of Wal-Mart and was a store manager there before her health deteriorated due to COPD.

Janet was a very creative individual. She was a member of the French Art Colony in Ohio. She expressed her talent in painting, pottery, stained glass and photography among other things. She also was known to plant a huge garden and also canned the bounty of the harvest. She enjoyed life, her friends and family.

Survivors include her sons and daughters in law, John and Cindy Byers of Brazil, and Thomas and Linda Byers of Gainesville, VA; grandchildren Wystan Byers and Lilibeth Byers; sister Carol Sue Doefinger of Conyers, GA; brother John G. Daniels and wife Rae of Lancaster, OH; nephews Colin Doefinger and Sean Doefinger.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband John D. Byers.

A memorial service will be held at Lawson-Miller Chapel, Thursday at 7:00pm with Pastor Steve Loft officiating. Visitation will be from 5-7pm at Lawson-Miller Chapel as well. Cremation was requested with burial of the ashes at a later date at Beech cemetery.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations may be made to VNA Hospice of the Wabash Valley, 400 8th Avenue, Terre Haute, IN 47804.

Virginia K Phillips

October 01, 1919 - June 08, 2013

Virginia Kathryn (Martin) Phillips, 93, of Brazil, passed away at 4:45pm on June 8 2013 at Exceptional Living Center, where she had been a resident since August 2011.

Virginia was born October 1, 1919 to the late John and Elizabeth (Morlan) Martin.

Virginia was a longtime member of Lena United Methodist Church. She was a member of Lena Good Neighbors Club, Van Buren Homemakers Club, and Methodist Ladies Club.

She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings, brother John Martin Jr and sister Patty Ann Bucklin. Virginia was also preceded by her husband Walter Phillips. She was a mother to step children Andy, Greg, Kevin, Nancy, Patty and their families.

She had been married to Nathan Phelps Jr and Ora Harris, who also preceded her in death.

Virginia is survived by her son Nathan M Phelps III and his wife Marcia; granddaughters Christy Phelps Gwyn and husband Bubba, Susan Phelps Griffith and husband Rodney; great grandchildren Ella and Jacob Griffith; devoted sister Myrna Schrader and family, also very special friend and companion Earl Schaffer.

Service will be Wednesday, June 12, 2012 at 11am at French Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Calcutta cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday, June 11, 2013 from 5pm until 7pm at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Lena United Methodist Church, 10932 Lena Rd, Brazil, IN 47834.

Helen Ann Mikolaitis

October 18, 1915 - June 08, 2013

Helen Ann Mikolaitis, 97, of Indianapolis, passed away on Saturday, June 8, 2013 at her residence.

She was born in Terre Haute, on October 18, 1915 to Julian John Mikolaitis and Agnes (Bostas) Mikolaitis.

Helen attended the Deming School. At age 11 her parents moved the family to the Center Point area, then attended Longnecker School and later graduated from Ashboro High School. After graduation she moved to Chicago where she worked at Sears and Roebuck. At this time the country was in the midst of World War II. Helen always had an ambition to become a nurse, so she joined the Cadet Corp for Student Nurses.

After the war she went for more advance nurse training in Springfield, Illinois. Helen later moved to St. Louis and was employed as a Nurse Instructor at Holy Cross Antral School of Nursing at St. Louis University. Helen then moved to Indianapolis to be closer to her family. She retired from the position of Night Nurse Coordinator at Veterans Administration Medical Center.

Helen loved picnics with family. She also loved to travel and belonged to a travel club.

Helen is survived by two sisters: Pauline Rubeck, of Brazil and Mary (Oran) Rubeck, of Poland; nieces and nephews: Ronald (Evelyn) Rubeck, Sharon (Joe) Swank, Jerry Rubeck, Richard Rubeck, Randy (Lorna) Rubeck, Michael (Donna) Rubeck, Nancy (Tom) Telgemeyer, Kenneth (Mary) Rubeck, Brenda (Tony) Cavell; several great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents, a baby brother John Mikolaitis, a niece Carol Rubeck and a brother-in-law Howard Rubeck.

Helen was a member of St. Gabriel the Archangel Parish in Indianapolis.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Gabriel the Archangel Parish 6000 West 34th Street, Indianapolis, Indiana Thursday, June 13, 2013 at 1:00pm with Father Larry Crawford. Burial will take place at Restlawn cemetery, in Brazil, Thursday at 3:30. Visitation will be at St. Gabriel the Archangel Parish Thursday from 11am until 1pm.

In lieu of flowers donations may be directed to Great Lakes Caring Hospice at 3115 S. Webster St. Kokomo, IN 46902.
