Amie B. Hudson
(February 25, 1983 - February 12, 2012)

Amie B. Hudson, 28, Lafayette, formerly of Logansport, died at 1 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 12, 2012, at her residence.

Born Feb. 25, 1983, in Winamac, she was the daughter of Irvin Hudson and Leila Tomlinson.

She was a health care worker for Wabash Center in Lafayette.

Amie enjoyed singing, Karaoke, mushroom hunting and spending time with her family, especially her two boys. Amie qualified for an upcoming audition on March 3, 2012, for the Voice. Amie was a graduate of West Central High School.

Surviving are sons, Brayden Hamilton, Royal Center, and Koen Bibby, Logansport; her mother, Leila Hudson, Logansport; her father, Irvin Hudson and wife, Pam, Logansport; fiancé, James Bibby, Lafayette; sisters, Vanessa Bowen, Logansport, and Dawn Hagen and husband, John, Winamac; brothers, Irvin S. Hudson and

Paul Hudson, both of Logansport; and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 7 p.m. Friday at Gundrum Funeral Home with Pastor Aaron Gross officiating.

Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the family to help with expenses.

Donovan R. Engel
(July 30, 1927 - February 16, 2012)

Donovan R. Engel, 84, Kokomo, died at 5 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 16, 2012, at his residence.

Born July 30, 1927, in Miami County, he was the son of Harry Allen Engel and Minnie Ethel Benner. He was married Feb. 14, 1969, in Logansport to Evelyn Sue Browning.

Donovan retired in 1992 from Wilson Foods after 21 years of service.

He was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church. Donovan was a Air Force veteran of World War II. He was a family man and cherished the time he spent with his children and grandchildren.

Surviving are his wife, Evelyn Sue Engel, Kokomo; children, Donna Lee Marohl and husband, Richard, Monticello, Debra Ellen Eldridge, Peru, Rodney Richard Engel and wife, Heidi, Kokomo, and Cynthia Powell, Carmel; 10 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Everett, Ray and Herman Engel; and two sisters, Arvilla Foust and Bernadine DeLucca.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Gundrum Funeral Home with Pastors Tom DeFries, Keith Treadway and Zach Washler officiating.

Burial, with full military graveside rites, will be in Mount Hope cemetery.

Friends may call from 11 a.m. until time of services on Saturday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Guardian Angel Hospice or to the donor’s favorite charity.

Geraldine "Jerry" Zoubul
(Died February 16, 2012)

Geraldine “Jerry” Zoubul, 81, Indianapolis and formerly of Logansport, died at 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 16, 2012, at her residence.

Born April 23, 1930, in Smithville, Tenn., she was the daughter of Thomas Walter Harris and Odell Parsley.

She was the former owner and operator of Zoubul Oasis in Logansport. She retired as the dietary supervisor for Indiana School for the Deaf.

She was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Logansport. She enjoyed being outside, hunting mushrooms, gardening, collecting butterflies and painting.

She is survived by daughter, Brenda Blakley, Indianapolis; granddaughter, Tami (Zoubul) Clothier and husband, Matthew, Peru; grandsons, James Zoubul, Logansport, and Charles Zoubul and wife, Robin, Royal Center; nine great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Judy Frame and husband, John, Fort Worth, Texas, and Nancy Samuels and husband, Norman, Logansport; and brothers, Bruce Harris, Logansport, Harold Harris and wife, Elsie, Logansport, Ralph Harris, Cartersville, Ill., Grant Harris and wife, Cinda, Fort Wayne, Steve Harris and wife, Sue, Logansport, and Ted Shriver, Logansport.

She was preceded in death by one son, Thomas Zoubul; one brother, Rex Harris; and two sisters, Frankie Seehase and Fredia Couch.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Gundrum Funeral Home, Logansport, with Deacon Juan Rodriguez officiating. Burial will be in St. John’s cemetery, Logansport.

Visitation will be from noon to 1 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the donor’s favorite charity.

Richard J. Houk PH.D.
(August 19, 1921 - February 17, 2012)

Richard J. Houk PH.D., 90, passed away Friday, February 17, 2012 at Holy Cross Village in Notre Dame, Indiana. Born on August 19, 1921 in Logansport, Indiana to the late Edward P. and Florence (Minneman) Houk. Dr. Houk was a 1933 graduate of St. Vincent DePaul grade school in Logansport, Indiana, and 1937 graduate of Logansport High School. In 1941 he received his BA Degree in Geography from Indiana University and then later in 1950 received his Ph.D. in Geography from Northwestern University where his thesis was on “The Portuguese Maritime Fishing Industry”. Richard retired as a Professor of Geography for DePaul University where he founded the Geography Department and taught for over 50 years beginning in 1946. He was known for his innovative teaching methods. In 1943 he joined the Army Air Corps. In 1944 because of his ability to speak Spanish and Portuguese he was selected for duty with the Weather Service at a secret air base in the Azores. From his Ph.D. thesis he composed a chapter in the Encyclopedia Britannica regarding the Portuguese fishing industry. Additionally he was published in Collier’s Encyclopedia and many scholarly geographic publications. During his long career Dr. Houk received many awards and recognitions. In 1964 he was awarded the decoration of Caballero del Orden de Merito Civil by the Spanish Government in recognition of years of unique efforts to increase and improve good relations between the U.S. and Spain. Dr. Houk was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship and in 1967 and 1968 he lived in Portugal and studied Portugal’s agricultural industry. Dr. Houk founded the DePaul Geographical Society, which recently celebrated its 50th anniversary. Over his lifetime he visited in excess of 100 countries on 6 continents and led tour groups to many of these. His favorites included Portugal and Spain. He was very devoted to his family by whom he is survived including a brother, James (Agnes) Houk of South Bend, many nieces and nephews including Peggy and John Gibney of South Bend, Phillip and Lynda Houk of Fort Wayne, Thomas Houk of San Diego, Larry and Mary Gingrich of Valparaiso, IN, Paul and Kim Gingrich of Plattsburgh, NY, and Dan and Peggy Gingrich of Logansport, IN. One niece, Janet Mullineaux. one nephew, Patrick J. Houk, one sister, Betty Gingrich, and one brother, J. David Houk, preceded him in death. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 am CST Thursday, February 23, 2012, at St. Athanasius Catholic Church in Evanston, IL, a parish he attended for many years. Mozart’s Requiem will be performed live in the service. Visitation will be held at the church from 9:00am CST until the time of services. Graveside services will be held at 1:00pm EST on Friday, February 24, 2012, with a visiting time 30 minutes prior to the service at the Mount Hope cemetery Chapel, Logansport, IN with full military graveside rites. The family asks that in lieu of flowers masses and prayers be offered for the repose of his soul, or contributions be made to Misericordia Heart of Mercy in Chicago, IL and the St. Vincent DePaul Society. Arrangements have been entrusted with Gundrum Funeral Home in Logansport, IN.

Gene A. Zimmerman
(January 23, 1931 - February 23, 2012)

U.S. Veteran
Gene Arnold Zimmerman, 81, Logansport, died at 4:10 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 23, 2012, in St. Vincent Hospital, Indianapolis.

Born Jan. 23, 1931, in Logansport, he was the son of Andrew Zimmerman and Edna Johnson. He was married July 7, 1950, in Delphi, to Mary Ann Bechdol.

Gene retired as a supervisor for General Tire after 38 years of service.

Mr. Zimmerman was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving during the Korean War. He was a member of American Legion Post 60 and VFW Post 3790. Gene loved fishing, traveling and all of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was an avid Chicago Cubs and Bears fan. Gene was a movie critic, as well as a longtime “Mash” and Three Stooges fan.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Ann Zimmerman, Logansport; sons, Randy Zimmerman and wife, Kathy, David Zimmerman and wife, Debbie, Brian Zimmerman and wife, Gayla, and John Zimmerman and companion, Carmen, all of Logansport, and Jay Zimmerman and fiancé, Lori, Monticello; grandchildren, Heather Moor and husband, Ryan, Fishers, Heidi Burkett and husband, Rob, Otterbein, Sara Emshwiller and husband, Aaron, Rensselaer, Jesse Zimmerman and wife, Angie, Logansport, Stephanie Frye and husband, Jeremy, Riverbank, Calif., Zachariah Zimmerman and wife, Holly, Galveston, Jesika Alexander, Logansport, and Ashley Zimmerman, Beaufort, S.C.; great-grandchildren, Vanderlei Burkett and Zuriel Burkett, both of Otterbein, Uria Gerlach and Evan Gerlach, both of Rensselaer, Charles Zimmerman and Megan Slone, both of Logansport, Brantley Zimmerman and Brylee Corn, both of Galveston, Grady Alexander and Evan Spohn, both of Logansport, and Mekhi Zimmerman, Beaufort, S.C.; brother, Thomas Zimmerman and wife, Hilda, Kokomo; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Gundrum Funeral Home with Pastor Jay McKinley officiating. Burial, with full military graveside rites, will be in Mount Hope cemetery.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.

Shirley A. DeWitt
(October 7, 1936 - February 29, 2012)

Shirley A. DeWitt, 75, Logansport, died at 1:33 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 29, 2012, at Logansport Memorial Hospital.

Born Oct. 7, 1936, in Logansport, she was the daughter of Donald R. Hamilton and Goldie Porter. She was married June 3, 1956, in Logansport, to Darrell K. DeWitt, who preceded her in death Sept. 24, 2011.

Shirley retired from the Caston Junior-Senior High School cafeteria after many years of service.

A graduate of Logansport High School, she was a member of First United Methodist Church. Shirley enjoyed traveling and spending time with her family and friends.

Surviving are son, Randy DeWitt and wife, Vickie, Logansport; daughters, Tammy Allison and husband, Herb, and Shelly Heath and husband, Rick, all of Logansport, and Lisa Cooler and husband, Smittie, South Carolina; grandchildren, April Zartman and husband, Sean, and Heather Harrison and husband, James, all of Logansport, Jeremy Lewis and wife, Carla, Noblesville, Crystal Craig and husband, James, Galveston, Kayla Allison, Fayetteville, Ark., Alisha Allison, Indianapolis, Dustin Heath and wife, Julie, Amboy, Ashley Weathers, Lafayette, Wesley and Alex Cooler, South Carolina; 12 great-granddaughters; and brothers, Don Hamilton and wife, Nancy, Lake Cicott, Jerry Ehler and wife, Sandy, Twelve Mile,

and John Ehler and wife, Pat, Logansport.

Services will be at 7 p.m. today

Gundrum Funeral Home with Pastor Dean Fager officiating.

Friends may call from 2 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Mount Hope cemetery in Logansport.

Memorials may be made to American Cancer Society.

Richard Allen Martin
(October 12, 1932 - March 1, 2012)

Richard Allen “Dick” Martin, 79, Logansport, died at 4:05 p.m. Thursday, March 1, 2012, at Seaton Specialty Hospital Lafayette.

Born Oct. 12, 1932, in Logansport, he was the son of Clarence Ray Martin and Flossie Faye Parker. He was married Jan. 3, 1954, in Thorntown, to Letha E. Williams, who preceded him in death Sept. 2, 2006.

Dick worked for the Pharos-Tribune for 25 years in the advertising department. He was also owner and operator of Bridge City Hobbies.

A 1950 graduate of Logansport High School, Richard was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force serving during the Korean War. Mr. Martin was a past president of the Indiana State Numismatics Association. He served on the board of several different regional coin clubs, including Logansport, Kokomo and Lafayette.

Surviving are daughter, Annette E. McGuire and husband, John, Phoenix; son-in-law, Casey S. Koons, Atlanta; granddaughter, Samantha Gaskill and husband, Rein, Maricopa, Ariz.; and grandson, Sean McGuire, Phoenix.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Dawn L. Koons.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Gundrum Funeral Home with Pastor Aaron Gross officiating. Burial, with full military graveside rites, will be in Mount Hope cemetery.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Donations may be made to the Indiana State Numismatics Association, Young Numismatist Award.
