Joe R. Barton

Joe Raymond Barton, Sr. 75, Fountaintown, formerly of Indianapolis passed away September 28, 2012. He was born October 16, 1936 at Alva, KY to the late Clarence E. and Maggie E. Sexton Barton. Joe married Joyce E. Hammond November 21, 1955, who preceded him in death March 26, 2000. He then married Helen M. Chappell Barton and she survives. Other survivors include daughter Lori (David) Anderson, Mooresville; sons Bruce (Darla) Barton, Fountaintown and Brian (Paulette) Barton, Martinsville; daughter Debra (Mark) Gahimer, Franklin; step daughter Cherie Chappell, New Whiteland; step son David (Terri) Chappell, Roanoke, VA; nineteen grandchildren and six great grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by his son Joe, Jr.; five grandchildren; sister Pauline Wise; brothers Gilbert, Elbert and Harry Barton. Joe was employed 42 years at National Starch and Chemical Co., Inc., retiring in 1996 as a Safety Engineer. He was an Army Veteran and retired as a First Sergeant from the Air Force Reserves. He served as Safety Captain for 7 years on the Moral Township Volunteer Fire Department. He also served as chairman of the Indianapolis Grand Chapter Order of the Eastern Star sessions, arrangements and accommodations committee for 14 years. Joe’s memberships include Pleasant View Baptist Church, 49 year member and Past Master of Pleasant Lodge No. 134 F. & A.M., Past Master of Indianapolis Lodge No. 669 F. & A.M., 41 year member of the Scottish Rite, 30 year member and seven times Past Patron of Acton Chapter No. 173 Order of Eastern Star; two time Past Patron of Indianapolis Chapter No. 393 and National Fire Protection Association. He also was a retired Colonel of the Marion County Sheriff’s Department Reserve Division after 18 years of service. Services will be 10:00 a.m., Monday, October 1, at Singleton Community Mortuary and Memorial Center with visitation 2:00 – 6:00 p.m., Sunday, September 30 at the mortuary. Star services will be held at 5:00 p.m. and Masonic services immediately following. Interment at Acton cemetery. Memorial gifts have been suggested to Indiana Masonic Home Foundation. Favorite quote: “I’m not conceited; although, Lord knows I have every right to be.”

L. Loretta Hughey

Born: Tue Jul 12, 1921
Died: Sun Sep 23, 2012

L. Loretta Hughey 91, Greenwood, passed away September 23, 2012. She was born July 12, 1921 at Bargersville to the late Walter Thomas and Sarah Catherine Dupree Cornelius. She married William A. Hughey on August 18, 1940 and he preceded her in death on February 9, 1999. She is survived by her son Randy (Chris) Hughey; daughters Lynda Kay (Sid) Prather and Terri (Dan) Armstrong, all of Greenwood; and 35 grandchildren, great, and great great grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her grandson Matthew Hughey and by five brothers and four sisters. Services will be 1:00 PM, Thursday, September 27 in Singleton Community Mortuary and Memorial Center with visitation 4:00 – 8:00 PM, Wednesday, September 26 at the mortuary. Burial will be in Greenwood cemetery.

William Carver

Died: Sat Sep 22, 2012

William A. Carver Sr. Indianapolis, passed away September 22, 2012. He was born November 28, 1930 in St. Louis, MO to the late Clyde and Elsie Ennor Carver. He married Elizabeth Droney in 1948 and she preceded him in death on February 20, 1988. He is survived by his sons William (Shirley) Carver, Jr., John (Denise) Carver, and Robert Carver all of Indianapolis; daughters Julie (James) Carver and Bridget (Jeff Pina) Carver both of Indianapolis; 11 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; brothers Daniel (Joan) Carver Sr. of St. Louis, MO, James (Elizabeth) Carver Sr. of Reno, NV, John (Shirley) Carver Sr. of Sacramento, CA; sisters Glenda (Bill) Cloclasure of St. Louis, MO, Helen (Bill) Rippen of McLeansboro, IL, and Jeannie (Mike) Sumpter of McLeansboro, IL; and his companion of 15 years Darlene Merritt. He was also preceded in death by his brothers Clyde Jr. and Thomas Carver; and sisters Elsie Tullock and Carol Cloclasure. He was employed 20 years by JC Construction, retiring as Senior Supervisor. Bill was a Kentucky Colonel for 15 years. He devoted his life to his family and friends and never met a stranger. Services will be 6:00 PM, Tuesday, September 25 in Singleton Community Mortuary and Memorial Center with visitation from 3:00 PM until the service at the mortuary.

Walter E. Ryker

Born: Sat Nov 27, 1926
Died: Thu Sep 20, 2012

Walter Elgin Ryker, 85, Greenwood, went to be with his Lord, Jesus Christ on September 20, 2012. He was born on November 27, 1926 in Southport, IN to the late Clarence E. and Grace Arnold Ryker.

At the age of 18 years old, Walter was drafted into the Army. Upon graduation from Southport High School in 1944, he assumed his duties in the Army. He traveled to the Philippines where he bravely served in the Army for two years. Upon returning home, he began work at Benner’s Appliance in Southport. After completing all required engineering courses at Purdue University, Walter joined Indianapolis Power and Light designing transmission lines
Walter’s love of family and fun were evident in all he did. As an avid photographer, he captured many important family memories. As a skilled engineer, he helped with many science fair projects. As a talented mathematician, he instilled a love of math in his girls. As a devoted father, he was there to help his girls as they grew and started their own families.
Throughout his 85 year membership at the Southport Baptist Church, he served the church in a multitude of ways. He is remembered for committing his time to Junior Church.
Survivors include his wife of 24 years, Debra Ryker, children Sharon (Jerry) Kramer of Ellicott City, MD, Elizabeth Louise Ryker, Ph.D., of Columbus Ohio, Anne (Dale) Jones of Ponder, Texas, Barbara (David) Sturm, M.D. of Greenwood; stepson Sam Houston of Eminence, Indiana; and 6 grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 37 years, Elinor Elizabeth Moeller Ryker and brothers Glen and Charles Ryker.

Services will be 10:30 a.m., Monday, Sept. 24 in Singleton Community Mortuary and Memorial Center, with visitation 3-6 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 23 at the mortuary. Memorial contributions may be made to the Southport Baptist Church Memorial & Endowment Fund.

Trieste Julia Maio

Born: Thu Aug 5, 1915
Died: Mon Sep 17, 2012

Trieste Julia Maio 97, Greenwood, passed away September 17, 2012. She was born in the state of Maine on August 5, 1915 to the late Ermenio and Emma Marsh. She married Anthony M. Maio on June 13, 1936 and he preceded her in death on May 16, 2006. She was also preceded in death by her grandson Cody H. West. Survivors include her sons Michael and Joseph Maio; daughter Gina Marie (Ron) West; 12 grandchildren; and 24 great grandchildren; and several great great grandchildren. She loved children and was a nanny for four years. She was employed by Real Silks in Indianapolis for 17 years and she had also worked for Curtis Right during the war. She became an inspector after studying at Arsenal Tech. She became a homemaker who loved crocheting baby clothes and she also sold Avon. She was a member of Our Lady of the Greenwood Catholic Church were Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM, Friday, September 21 with visitation there one hour prior to the service. Entombment will be in Calvary cemetery. Memorial gifts have been suggested to Riley Children’s Foundation, 30 S. Meridian Street, Suite 200, Indianapolis, Indiana 46204.

Mary Alice Leak

Born: Fri Oct 28, 1921
Died: Wed Jun 2, 2010

Mary Alice Leak, 88, Indianapolis, passed away May 30, 2010. She was born October 28, 1921 at Indianapolis to the late Joseph W. and Shirley D. (Baker) Waltz. Mary Alice married Aaron Eugene 'Gene' Leak October 7, 1939 at Indianapolis and he preceded her in death August 6, 1982. Survivors include daughters Sherry Duncan, Indianapolis and Cindy (Howard) Ely, Greenwood; six grandchildren; fourteen great grandchildren; sister Shirley Jo (Jack) Praed, Indianapolis; brother-in-law Robert Barr, Linton and eleven nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by her daughter Julie J. Hanlin and sister Doris Barr. Services 2:00 p.m., Friday, June 4 at Lynhurst Baptist Church with visitation 4:00 - 8:00 p.m., Thursday, June 3 at Singleton Community Mortuary and Memorial Center and one hour prior to service Friday at the church. Interment Floral Park cemetery. Memorial gifts have been suggested for 'Research Only' to American Heart Association of Indiana, American Cancer Society of Indiana, American Diabetes Association of Indiana or Children's TherAplay Foundation, Inc. Mary Alice was a George Washington High School graduate (1938) and attended Indiana University performing in the 'first girls' drum and bugle corps. Her lifetime employment included Best Lock Company, Eli Lilly & Co., Westinghouse Laundromat, Avon Products, Country Door Gift Shops and Stevens Mortuary. She was an extremely active member of Lynhurst Baptist Church since 1944 having served in numerous positions and capacities and was recognized for 28 years of Christian service with high school youth. She served on the Board of American Baptists of Greater Indianapolis ten years and was moderator of the Indianapolis American Baptist Association (1980-1981). Mary Alice devoted many years to various PTA programs included past president Homecroft Elementary PTA, Marion County PTA Board, Perry Township PTA Council and life member Indiana Congress of Parents and Teachers, Inc. For 24 years the Leak residence was a part of the Burkhart Home and Garden Tour. Additional highlights of her life was being featured as 'Cook of the Week' in the Indianapolis Star, pianist for Gold Star Mother's Tea at former Gov. Harold Handley's Mansion, girl scout leader, volunteer tudor of elementary school children and on her 78th birthday being featured in the former Spotlight Newspaper by students for tireless volunteering efforts.

Thomas A. George

Born: Fri Oct 1, 1926
Died: Mon May 24, 2010

Thomas A. George, 83, Taylorsville, passed away May 24, 2010. He was born October 1, 1926 in Adair County, Kentucky to the late William and Olive Kearns George. He married Dimple Brockman on July 27, 1946 in Adair County, Kentucky, and she survives. He owned and operated Tom Sinclair Service Station in Columbus and later was a truck driver for Robert's Truck Service. In retirement, Tom repaired lawn mowers and small engines. Other survivors include his daughters Regena (Mark) Chapple of Columbus, Joyce Howard of Columbus, Doris (Don) Washburn of Lobelville, TN, Deborah (James) Gassaway of Taylorsville, and Sherry (Dallas) Anderson of Westport; son Thomas (Karen) George of Taylorsville; 10 grandchilren; 15 great grandchildren; and sister Christine Jeffers of Columbus. He was also preceded in death by his sisters Hazel Troutman, Shirley Brockman, and Barbara Wubben. Services with military honors will be 7:00 PM, Thursday, May 27 in Taylorsville United Methodist Church with visitation there from 5:30 PM, until the service. Private burial will be in Flat Rock Baptist cemetery. Memorial gifts have been suggested to Taylorsville United Methodist Church, 1361 Tannehill Road, Taylorsville, IN 47280 or the charity of donor's choice.

Ned J. Rivers

Born: Wed Apr 23, 1930
Died: Thu May 20, 2010

Ned J. Rivers, 80, Indianapolis, passed away May 19, 2010. He was born April 23, 1930 in Beech Grove to the late Platte and Mildred Frantz Rivers. Ned married Norma J. Rivers on March 1, 1956 in Indianapolis and she preceded him in death on May 11, 2010. He was an Army Veteran and a member of First Baptist Church of Greenwood and Beech Grove Lodge No. 694 F. & A.M. He was employed 42 years at Eli Lilly and Company retiring in 1989. His survivors are daughters Debra (Jeffrey) Ulrey of Mooresville, Sue Rivers of Richardson, TX and Kathleen Rivers of Zionsville; grandchildren Jennifer, Joseph and Allison Ulrey; sister Sara (Glen) Clayton of Indianapolis and brother John Rivers of Franklin. He was also preceded in death by step brother Robert Gulledge. Services will be at 5:00 p.m., Sunday, May 23 at Singleton Community Mortuary and Memorial Center with visitation 2:00 p.m. until the time of service. Inurnment will be in Greenwood cemetery. Memorial gifts have been suggested to American Lung Association.

Norma Rivers

Born: Thu Nov 15, 1934
Died: Wed May 12, 2010

Norma Rivers, 75, Indianapolis, passed away May 11, 2010. She was born November 15, 1934 in Indianapolis to the late Arnold W. and Evelyn Agnew Anderson. Norma married Ned J. Rivers on March 1, 1956 in Indianapolis and he survives. Other survivors are daughters Debra (Jeffrey) Ulrey of Mooresville, Sue Rivers of Richardson, TX and Kathleen Rivers of Zionsville; grandchildren Jennifer, Joseph and Allison Ulrey; sister Phyllis J. Sturm of Indianapolis and brother William (Renee') Anderson of San Antonio, TX. Norma had been employed 38 years at Bose McKinney & Evans LLP retiring in 1990 as administrative manager. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Greenwood where her service will be at 11:30 a.m., Saturday, May 15, with visitation 9:30 a.m. until the time of service. Inurnment Greenwood cemetery. Memorial gifts have been suggested to American Lung Association or Gleaners Food Bank. Arrangements by Singleton Community Mortuary and Memorial Center.
