W. Paul Torrington

EVANSVILLE -- W. Paul Torrington, 94, Evansville, executive vice president and vice chairman of the board of directors at Mead Johnson & Co. when he retired in 1972, died April 3, 2002, at St. Mary's Medical Center.

At one time or another, Torrington managed virtually every part of Mead Johnson & Co.'s operations over his 30-year association. He joined the company in 1942 as assistant to president D. Mead Johnson, and shortly thereafter established the company's engineering department. He then began a long-term modernization program for buildings, utilities and manufacturing.

In 1949 he was elected vice president in charge of manufacturing and engineering, a position he held until 1959. He was elected to the company's board of directors in 1957. In 1959 he was elected its executive vice president and had responsibility for research and later manufacturing. He assumed the management of all domestic and Canadian operations in 1965 when Harold O. McCutchan became Mead Johnson board chairman. He was elected vice chairman of the Mead Johnson board of directors in 1968.

Active in civic affairs he served as a director and vice president of the Evansville-Vanderburgh County Building Authority, which managed the Civic Center from 1961-1970. He was a board member of the Indiana Manufacturers Associations from 1958-1964 and from 1961-1966 served as a member of St. Mary's Hospital Advisory Board.

He was born Feb. 29, 1908, in New York City, was educated in St. Louis, Chicago and Pennsylvania before returning to New York. He joined the Intercontinent Gas Corp., which specialized in the design, construction and erection of experimental pilot plants to prove commercial feasibility. He was involved in projects in London in 1935-1936. He then joined Emulsions Process Corp. in 1937 as its chief engineer, and in the course of the engineering operation, filed and received a number of patents, which included a process for the extraction of the cytoplasm from byproduct brewers yeast, thereby recovering in an unaltered form the Vitamin B complex and proteolytic enzymes. He then designed pilot plants for Anheuser-Busch in St. Louis and Mead Johnson & Company in Evansville.

He was a member of the Evansville Country Club and the Kennel Club of Evansville. He was an avid golfer, enjoyed travel throughout his life, and more recently spent considerable time on the boat he kept on Kentucky Lake.

A generous donor who focused on helping provide state-of-the-art equipment for the Torrington Development Biology Research Laboratory and the Torrington Chemistry Research Laboratory, he continued to underwrite substantial purchases for both laboratories, which he initiated during USI's capital campaign in 1998. He then established the W. Paul and Mildred Torrington Endowment through a charitable remainder trust to perpetually underwrite ongoing equipment purchases for the Biology and Chemistry Departments at the University of Southern Indiana.

In addition, he established the W. Paul and Mildred B. Torrington Endowed Presidential Scholarship in 1998 to benefit students who major in medical and scientific fields. The Torrington Trust also establishes the Rosemarie T. and John J. Albers Scholarships for students in the Pott School of Science and Engineering Technology.

A grateful University bestowed on Torrington an honorary doctor of science degree in 1998. It was announced at the groundbreaking last fall that the science wing of the Science and Education Center, currently under construction, will be named the W. Paul Torrington Science Wing to recognize him as a science pioneer whose vision and resources will continue to inspire the School's students and faculty.
