Velma E. Arnold

February 08, 1925 - April 16, 2010

Velma E. Arnold, 85, of Timbercrest Drive, went to be with the Lord at 4:30 p.m. Friday, April 16, 2010, at Hospice of South Central Indiana Inpatient Facility.

Mrs. Arnold was born in Decatur County Feb. 8, 1925, the daughter of Walter F. and Ica Mae (Wolfe) Cook. On June 5, 1943, she married William E. Arnold, who preceded her in death Feb. 9, 1968.

She was a member of the Community Church of Columbus and of the Eastern Star. She enjoyed reading and racing. One of Velma’s greatest joys was caring for her children.

Mrs. Arnold is survived by her sons, Stephen (Donna) Arnold of Seymour and Kevin (Angie) Arnold of Franklin; a daughter, Sharon Blair of Columbus; grandchildren, Stacey Gross, Kelly Bledsoe, Bill Blair, Shawn Arnold, Jason Arnold, Amanda Rogers, Lauren Arnold and Logan Arnold; and 12 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; brothers, Lloyd and Frank Cook; and sister, Evelyn Platt.

FUNERAL: 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 20, 2010 at the Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral home with Pastor Chuck Coleman officiating.

VISITATION: 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday and from noon until service time on Tuesday at the funeral home.

BURIAL: Garland Brook cemetery.

Lavera D. "Donnie" Ackenback

April 23, 1938 - June 24, 2009

LaVera Dawn “Donnie” Ackenback, 71, of Central Avenue died at 7 a.m. Wednesday, June 24, 2009, at her home.

Mrs. Ackenback was a 1956 graduate of Shields High School in Seymour and retired from The Republic after 25 years of service. She attended Calvary Church of the Nazarene and loved reading, gardening and visiting the ocean.

Born in Seymour April 23, 1938, Mrs. Ackenback was the daughter of Ray L. and Martha Hillenburg Murphy. She married Charles E. Ackenback Sr., Nov. 28, 1958.

Survivors include her husband; her mother, of Seymour; sons, Charles E. (Patty) Ackenback of Seymour and Jay Ackenback of Columbus; daughters, Kimberly (Bill) Garrison of Uniontown and Tammy Bell of Seymour; a sister, Kathy (Ralph) Coryea of Seymour; grandchildren, Jeff Ackenback, Amber (Ben) Amick, Jennifer (Crandall) Thomson, Michael Cheek, Shawn Ackenback, Shelby Judge, Amanda Bell, Rachael Bell, Jayson Ackenback, Brandin Ackenback and Derek Ackenback; great-grandchildren, Jaylynn Ackenback, Desiree Ackenback and another great-grandchild due in December; in-laws, Bonnie Overfelt of Columbus, Carol (Mike) Lewis of Poplar Bluff, Mo., and Dorene Breland of Mobile, Ala.; and several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father on May 10, 1998.

VISITATION: Calling will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday June 28, 2009 and from noon until service time Monday.

FUNERAL: The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday, June 29, 2009 at Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home, with the Rev. Shane Rocker officiating.

BURIAL: Burial will be at Garland Brook cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to the Lavera D. Ackenback memorial fund.

Lucille Nichols

October 26, 1935 - August 09, 2009

Lucille Nichols, 73, of Midway Street died at 11:30 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 9, 2009, at Columbus Health Rehabilitation Center.

Born in Munfordville, Ky., Oct. 26, 1935, Mrs. Nichols was the daughter of Mary Elizabeth Vance. She married Vernon Edd Nichols Jan. 17, 1955. He preceded her in death Dec. 17, 2003.

She is survived by sons, George Ricky Nichols of Butlerville, Randall Keith Nichols and Joseph Lee Nichols, both of Columbus; a daughter, Delores Joann Sams of Seymour; 18 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

She was also survived by a special friend, April from Columbus Health Rehabilitation Center.

She was preceded in death by her mother; her husband; sons, Hurley Ray Nichols, Darrell Junior Nichols, Orville Eugene Nichols, Tony Michael Nichols, Russell Eric Nichols, Edgar DeWayne Nichols and Mark Anthony Nichols; and a brother, Roger Vance.

FUNERAL: 11 a.m. Wednesday at Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home.

VISITATION: 8 a.m. until service time Wednesday.

BURIAL: Rest Haven cemetery in Edinburgh.

MEMORIALS: National Eye Institute.

Kenneth A. Haggard

November 07, 1952 - June 26, 2007

Kenneth A. Haggard, 54, of Clifford died Tuesday, June 26, 2007, at his home.

Mr. Haggard was a self-employed painting contractor. He was a Harley Davidson Motorcycle enthusiast and also enjoyed fishing, NASCAR and watching wrestling.

Born in Brown County Nov. 7, 1952, Mr. Haggard was the son of Alvin Haggard and Mary Margaret Shipley. He married Esther Burkitt.

Survivors include his wife; sons, Jonathan (Gretchen) Sloan of Indianapolis and Lester Allen (Stefanie) Sloan of Paragon; a daughter, Tina (John) Simons of Bloomington; and grandchildren, James and Casey Sloan and Mackenzie Simons.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Alvin Haggard and Margaret Percifield; and a brother, Lester Leroy Haggard.

VISITATION: Friday June 29, 2007 from 6:00 until 7:00 p.m. at the Jewell - Rittman Family Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Kenneth A. Haggard Memorial established through the funeral home.

Martha M. Cody

June 10, 1920 - July 09, 2008

Martha M. Cody, 88, of Beech Drive, died at 2:54 p.m. Wednesday, July 9, 2008 at Willow Crossing Health Rehabilitation.

Mrs. Cody had been employed by C.P. Electronics and G. C. Murphy 5 10. She was a life long resident of Bartholomew County and enjoyed spending time with her family. She was of the Methodist faith.

Born June 10, 1920 in Columbus, Mrs. Cody was the daughter of Thomas and Susie Palmer Morrison. She married William F. Cody Sr. April 4, 1959.

Survivors include a son, William F. “Rick” Cody Jr. of Columbus; a daughter, Marilyn J. “Sis” Woods of Columbus; grandchildren, Tammy Jo Swallows of Taylorsville, Gretchan Hashimoto and Shane Smith, both of Columbus and William F. Cody III of Indianapolis; great-grandchildren, Kammy Woods, Amanda and Megan Hashimoto and Serenity and Kalista Cody and a great-great-grandchild, Brendin Woods.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband on March 19, 2005; a son, Jerry A. Cody on May 23, 2007 and a brother, James Morrison.

VISITATION: Calling will be from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday and from 9 a.m. until service time Monday, July 14, 2008 at the Jewell - Rittman Family Funeral Home.

FUNERAL: The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home with the Rev. Jerry Day Sr. officiating.

BURIAL: Burial will be at Daugherty cemetery.

Harold O. Welsh Jr.

March 28, 1931 - April 01, 2009

Harold O. Welsh Jr., 78, of Columbus, Indiana, died Wednesday, April 1, 2009, at 1:50 p.m. at Hospice of South Central Indiana Inpatient Facility.

Harold was born in Ottumwa, Iowa on March 28, 1931, the son of Harold Oscar Welsh Sr. and Ruth Marie Atkinson Welsh. He married Marcella Marie Ellis August 28, 1955. He earned a Bachelor’s Degree from Anderson College, a graduate degree from Ball State University, and studied aerospace at Lock Haven College. Harold was in the U.S. Army and served in Japan during the Korean War. Harold did his early teaching at Winamac, Anderson, and Pendleton High Schools where he taught Industrial Arts and acted as cross-country, track, and basketball coach.

Harold was an active member and past Chairman of District 7 of the Indiana Industrial Education Association. He taught adult education classes in lapidary and helped to organize and is a past president of the White River Gem Society.

Harold was among the inaugural teachers at the opening of Columbus East High School and was an Industrial Arts educator there for 19 years. In addition to his regular involvement with the athletic program at CEHS, he also served as golf coach for several years. He served as chairman for District 14 of the Indiana Technology Educators Association for several years and was on the advisory committee for plastics mold making at Vincennes University. He is a past president of the Society of Plastics Engineers. He was an active member of the NEA, ISTA, CEA, AIAA, the Experimental Aircraft Association, Phi Delta Kappa, and Epsilon Pi Tau.

Harold’s list of achievements was long, but not as long as his list of interests and hobbies. Harold loved golf, basketball, and NASCAR racing. Harold loved lapidary and jewelry making, photography and flying. He may be best remembered for his ability to turn industrial “junk” into beautiful art through his metal sculpture. He was a past president of Art Columbus and was an active member of the arts community. Harold faithfully attended the First Baptist Church of Columbus.

Harold is preceded in death by his talented and beautiful wife Marcella Marie Welsh. He is survived by 3 sisters and 3 brothers and his two sons: Eric (Lisa) Welsh of Anderson, IN. and Kevin (Chanda) Welsh of Columbus. He is also survived by the joy of his life, his beautiful granddaughter Sabrina Marie Welsh.

VISITATION: Visitation will be Sunday, April 5, 2009 from 1:00pm-4:00pm at the Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home in Columbus.

FUNERAL: The funeral service will be held at the First Baptist Church of Columbus at 11:00am on Monday, April 6, 2009 with Rev. Daniel Cash officiating.

BURIAL: Burial will be at Garland Brook cemetery.

Kloe Dawn Robinson

January 18, 2008 - February 24, 2008

Kloe Dawn Robinson, infant daughter of Rachel Dawn Robinson of Seymour, died at 4:20 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 24, 2008, at St. Vincent Jennings Hospital.

Kloe was born in Columbus Jan. 18, 2008.

Survivors include her mother; a brother, Nicholas Allen Hawkins of Seymour; grandparents, Verdie Robinson of Seymour and Jennifer Robinson of Indianapolis; aunts, Roxanne Roth of Hartsville, Cindy May of Jonesville, Elizabeth Robinson of Columbus and Cora and Arlena Robinson, both of Indianapolis; and an uncle, Fulton Robinson of Seymour.

She was preceded in death by great-grandparents, Hewey and Flora Robinson.

FUNERAL: 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home with Bishop Robert Vance officiating.

VISITATION: 11:30 a.m. until service time Thursday.

BURIAL: Garland Brook cemetery.

Donna Sue Burbrink

March 29, 1938 - June 07, 2010

Donna Sue Burbrink, 72, of Sandy Hook Drive, died at 8:10 p.m. Monday, June 7, 2010, at Columbus Regional Hospital.

Mrs. Burbrink was involved in many functions at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church where she was a member, including Christian Service Guild, the Small Group Bible Study, and Tabitha Guild. She was a member of the Red Hat Society and a life member of Beta Sigma Phi (Yellow Rose).

She enjoyed bowling and competed in national tournaments, had been a leader for the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, and was a very active grandmother, attending many activities involving her grandchildren.

Born in Columbus, March 29, 1938, Mrs. Burbrink was the daughter of Donald J. and Annabelle Cooper Hollenbeck. She married Lester E. Burbrink October 5, 1958.

Survivors include her husband; a son, Jeff E. (Jessica) Burbrink of Goshen; a daughter, Kim S. (Mike) Pomerenke of Columbus; grandchildren, Philip M. Burbrink of Hobart, Jeremy B. Burbrink of Goshen, Jocelyn C. (JC) Burbrink of Goshen, Janelle A. Burbrink of Goshen, Kyle J. Pomerenke of Carmel, and Alan M. Pomerenke of Carmel; and a sister, Bonnie K. (Michael) Biddle of Clinton, CT.

FUNERAL: 1:30 p.m. Friday at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church with Pastor Mark Teike officiating.

CALLING: 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home and at the church from 12:30 p.m. until service time Friday.

A Beta Sigma Phi service will be conducted at 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

BURIAL: Garland Brook cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Peter’s Lutheran Church or the American Heart
