Verna C. Butt
June 26, 1908 - September 17, 2004
Verna C. (Dierdorf) Butt, 96, of Brazil died at 1:35 PM Friday, September 17, 2004 in the Clay County Health Center where she had been a resident since February.
She was born June 26, 1908 in Clay County the daughter of William C. Dierdorf and Elizabeth Romas Dierdorf.
She graduated from Staunton High School in 1926. In 1928, she married the love of her life, A. Lloyd Butt, and together they reared their family on a grain/dairy farm in Posey Township.
Verna was a talented seamstress and craftsman. Besides making garments for herself, which won her local and state awards, she delighted in making unique upholstered footstools for each of her children and grandchildren. Also, she designed handcrafted placemats made out of recycled greeting cards for each family memeber with always the individual hobbies and vocations in mind.
She was known throughout her extended family as a marvelous cook, and her noodles and angel food cakes were always "winners."
She was a member of Pleasant Grove Church of Christ, and faithfully attended until failing health made it impossible.
Survivors include two sons and a daughter-in-law, Bill A. Butt of Shepardstown, W.Va. and Virgil and Mary Jo Butts of Brazil, two daughters and sons-in-law, Louise and Hubert Fagg of Brazil, and Mary and Steve Youtz of Commerce Township, MI; 13 grandchildren, Byron Fagg and wife Ruth E., Cathy Rodgers and husband Gary, Joan Mitchell and husband Jack, Amy Finchum and husband Kipp, Jamie Treash and husband Bob Jr., David Felling and wife Victoria, Cyndy Furlong and husband Rich, Jayne Goldsen, Jerry Butts and wife Elizabeth, Debi Sullivan, Susan Treash and husband Bob Sr., Scott Youtz and wife Candace, and Barbara Benedetto and husband Britton; 23 great-grandchildren; 4 step-great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-grandson; a sister-in-law, Irene Dierdorf and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 61 years; and a brother Virgil Dierdorf.
Services will be Tuesday at 2:00 PM at Miller Memorial Chapel with Brother Walter Hunter officiating. Burial will follow in Summit Lawn cemetery. Visitation will be Monday from 4:00 to 8:00 PM and Tuesday prior to services.

Betty Lou Hayes
January 01, 1931 - September 21, 2004
Betty Lou Hayes, 73, Brazil, died at 12:29 a.m., Tuesday, September 21, in Terre Haute Regional Hospital following an extended illness.
Born in Terre Haute on January 1, 1931, her parents were Donald Foltz and Dorothy Laymon Foltz who later moved to Staunton. She attended Staunton High School through the eleventh grade and later earned a G.E.D.
While residing in South Carolina she became a Certified Nurses Assistant and then became a beautician.
She was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 1127, Ladies Auxilliary of Brazil.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by four infant children, and one son, Robert A. Hendricks.
Surviving are her husband, Robert W. Hayes, who she married November 16, 1992; one daughter and her husband, Lisa and Glen Watler, Brazil; two step-daughters and their husbands, Sherry and Rick Lewis, Kenna and Tony Hill, all of Brazil; seven grandchildren, Don Watler, Charla Freeman, Kali Watler, Stephanie McCains, Shyanna Lewis, and Alex Hitt, all of Brazil, and Jessica Freeman, Georgetown, Texas; one brother, Donald Foltz, in California; three sisters, Pat Foltz Jacobson, of Florida, Carolyn Tilley McGinty and husband, Al, and Peggy Tilley Hunter, all of Brazil; several nieces, nephews and extended family.
Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday in Miller Memorial Chapel. Rev. Tony Alstott will officiate, and interment will be in Summit Lawn cemetery. Visitation is from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Thursday, with a V.F.W. Auxiliary walk through at 6:00 p.m.
The family requests memorial contributions be made to the National Kidney Foundation of Indiana. Envelopes will be available at the funeral chapel.

Gregory L. Hendrix
March 06, 1959 - September 16, 2004
Gregory L. Hendrix, 45 of Brazil, died September 16, 2004 at his residence. He was born March 6, 1959 in Terre Haute, the son of Carl Lee Hendrix and Mary Jane Williams Hendrix.
He married Teresa Warrum Hendrix December 17, 1982, she survives. He had worked for the Vigo County School Corporation for 21 years as a custodian at Terre Haute South High School. He enjoyed fishing, watching football and being with family at home.
He is survived by his wife; son John Hendrix; daughter Ashley Hendrix and fiancé Ryan Fry; granddaughter Kahla; two brothers, Michael Hendrix and wife Melinda of Nashville, TN; Jesse Hendrix of Chicago; one sister in law, Jennifer Hendrix of Terre Haute; nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother Curt Hendrix.
A memorial service will be held Monday at 7:00pm at French Funeral Home with Rev. Merrill Weir officiating. Friends may call from 5-7pm. At his request, cremation will take place with burial of the ashes at a later date.

Pia Monika Lovett
December 18, 1925 - October 05, 2004
Pia Monika Lovett, October 5, 2004 at 5:45 am at Cloverleaf Healthcare Facility. She had been in failing health for a short time.
She was born in Hindenberg, Germany, on December 18, 1925. She was the daughter of Paul and Hatefish Mazurek. She was a homemaker, and enjoyed cooking traditional German foods for her family and friends. She was a member of the Annunciation Church.
She is survived by two daughters and sons in law, Veronica and Larry Lucas, and Barbara and Randall Peters; two sons and one daughter in law, Henry and Cindy Lovett and Mike Lovett all of Brazil; 10 grandchildren, Stephanie Browning and husband John, Lauren Latta and husband Matt, Chandra Kumpf and husband Paul, Nick Lovett, Nathan Lovett, Nyle Lovett, Kristy Pomeroy and husband Erik, Kelly Peters, Allie Peters, and Ian Lovett; 6 great-grandchild Joshua Girton, Jordan Girton, Sydney Browning, Caleb Abney, Cameron Kumpf, and Abby Browning.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Raymond Lovett, and grandson Ryan Lucas; also many siblings and other family in Germany.
Services will be held Friday at 3:00pm at French Funeral Home. Stephen McCullough, Matt Latta and Allie Peters will provide music selections. Burial will follow at Clearview cemetery. Visitation will be from 1-3 PM.

Joan Margaret Hockman
February 17, 1937 - October 05, 2004
Joan Margaret Hockman, 67, of Clay City, died October 5, 2004 at 7:53 am at Union Hospital in Terre Haute.
She was born February 17, 1937 in Clay County the daughter of Ralph Glenn Love and Mable Louise Burris Love.
She was a homemaker and LPN at Vigo County Nursing Home for three years and McCann Manor, Center Point for 16 years. She was a life musician and pianist at New Hope Baptist Church, playing for all occasions; Clay City OES #355; former member of DAR and Mayflower Society; and a 1955 graduate of Clay City High School.
She is survived by her husband, Donald G. Hockman, who she married on October 16, 1993; three sons, Steve and Michelle Walden, Terry and Diana Walden, Russell and Shannon Walden; one daughter, Susan and Kevin Hutson; two step-daughters, Ginger and Robert Eib and Peggy and Eugene Lamneck; one step-son, Eddie and Carol Walden II; grandchildren, Max and Kylie Hutson, Taylor Walden, Justin Walden, Kristen and Donnie Porter, Brianna and Nathaniel Walden, Shawn Walden and fiance April Kennedy; step-grandchildren, Robert Eib, Buck and Sonya Lamneck, Brett Lamneck and Jennifer and Scott Wagle; one great-grandchild, Austin Walden; three step-great-grandchildren, Jad, Samantha, and Evan Wagle; two sisters-in-law, Ronetta Love and Ruth A. And Gene Sinders and children Mark and Jennifer; nephews, Robert Love, Rondall Love; among many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins from the Burris side of the family.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Ralph Love; and a step-grandchild, K.C. Morrell.
Funeral services will be Friday, October 8, 2004 at 11:00 at Schoppenhorst Funeral Home in Clay City with Pastor Nathan Couch officiating. Burial will follow in Maple Grove cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 4-8 pm also at the funeral home.

Bernice A. Wegner
August 12, 1911 - August 10, 2004
Bernice A. Wegner, 92 of Brazil, died August 10, 2004 at 8:30 am at Cloverleaf Healthcare Facility.
She was born August 12, 1911 in southern Clay County the daughter of Anthony Fretz and Ora Lasell Fretz. She graduated from Ashboro High School in 1930.
April 29, 1934 she married Richard A. Wegner. They had a family farm in Clay County for many years. They raised cattle and were grain farmers. She enjoyed quilting and did so for many years with the Bethel United Methodist Women's quilting group. She was a member of the Union United Methodist Church. She was devoted to her husband and family. She tended the garden and canned everything she could. She was working on latch-hook rugs even while in the nursing home. She was a loving grandmother and great-grandmother.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Richard A. Wegner in 1975; two sons, Richard Warren Wegner in 1991 and Ralph Edwin Wegner in 2003; one sister Vera Sharp and two brothers Ralph Fretz and Paul Fretz.
She is survived by her daughter and son in law, Delores and Roy Gayle Haddon of Reelsville; two daughters in law, Jean Wegner of Cincinnati, and Mary Ann Wegner of Cory; 5 grandchildren, Linda Pell and husband Bryan, Larry Haddon and wife Karen, Troy Wegner and wife Carrie, Tara Clements and husband Jay, and Tony Wegner and wife Bryanna; 15 great-grandchildren, Carrie, Deedra and Erin Pell, Mandy, Jerrod and Justin Haddon, Dustin Stouder, Allen Warren, Jordan Wegner, Corrine, Hannah, Ian, Eric, and Miles Clements, and Alex Hughes; great-great-grandchildren, Destiny and James William Stouder; one brother H. Cecil Fretz and wife Margaret of Center Point; 4 sisters, Elsie Dunn of Evans, GA, V. Ruth Stant of Dublin, IN, Doris E. Romas and husband Gayle of Brazil, and Norma Jean Rector of Center Point; one sister in law, Rosa Andrew and husband John of Indianapolis; many nieces, nephews and extended family.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2:00 pm at Schoppenhorst Funeral Home with Revs. Dennis Alstott and Chester Hapenny officiating. Burial will follow in Maple Grove cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 4-8 pm at the funeral home and Saturday prior to services.
The family requests that memorial contributions be made to Union United Methodist Church, Window Restoration Fund or the American Diabetes Association. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Mrs. Ruth Elsner
Mrs. Ruth Elsner, 85, of Seymour, IN, passed away 0ctober 11th, 2008 at the Lutheran Community Home in Seymour
Mrs. Elsner was born in Seymour, on September 9, 1923, the daughter of Jacob A. and Berta June (Meyer) Brackemyre.
On October 30, 1950, in St. Joseph Catholic Church, in Jennings County, she married Ambrose Elsner. He passed away May 10, 1992.
Ruth was a member of Saint Ambrose Catholic Church. She graduated from Bethesda Hospital School of Nursing in Cincinnati, OH, and worked as a registered nurse at Schneck Medical Center in Seymour, until her retirement in 1985. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, quilting, and Bible study.
She is survived by her daughter; Lisa (Dennis) Runge; sons; Timothy (Sandy) Elsner, Thomas Elsner, Pete (Kelley) Elsner; six grandchildren; Mike and Christina Runge, Samantha, Andy, Daniel and Samuel Elsner, and dozens of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded by her parents; husband; daughter; Susan Marie Warinner; brothers; Keith Brackemyre, H. Paul Brackemyre, J. Allen Brackemyre, George Brackemyre, Wilford Brackemyre; sisters; Grace Imlay, Wilma Davis, Harriet Miller, and Elizabeth Traylor.
Funeral service will be at Voss Chapel on Wednesday at 10:00 am with Father Todd Goodson officiating. Friend may call at Voss Chapel on Tuesday from 4-8pm and on Wednesday after 9 am till service time.
Burial will follow at Riverview cemetery, Seymour.
Memorials may be written to Saint Ambrose Catholic School, Schneck Medical Center Foundation, or Lutheran Community Home.

Tove C. Kirchner
October 16, 1961 - November 18, 2004
Tove C. Kirchner, 43 of Brazil passed away November 18, 2004 at 4:33am in the emergency room of St. Vincent Clay Hospital. She had been battling cancer for the past two years.
She was born October 16, 1961 in Lebanon, IN. the daughter of Marshall Moore and Patricia Clevenger Moore. She graduated from Staunton High School Class of 1979.
On September 12, 1981 she married David Kirchner, he survives.
In the past she had worked at the Riddell Bank, J.C. Penney in Brazil, and had also been a bookkeeper for Sylvan Learning Center in Terre Haute. She last worked at Forest Park Golf Course as a bookkeeper. She enjoyed doing crafts and making quilts. She was a devoted Christian, wife and mother. Her world has been centered on her church and her children’s activities.
She is survived by her mother, Patricia English; her husband David; three daughters, Mallory Kirchner, Maggie Kirchner, and Madison Kirchner; four sisters, Christy Stevenson and husband Mike of Jasonville, Stephanie Staton and husband Brandon of Murphysboro, TN., Tina Weiss and husband Wade of Plainfield, and Debbie Newlin of Paris, IL. one brother Rock J. Moore of Jasonville; mother in law, Loretta Kirchner; several nieces and nephews and other extended family.
She was preceded in death by her father; and father in law, Jack Kirchner.
Services will be held Monday at 11:00am at Miller Memorial Chapel with Brother Rick Thomas and Brandon Staton officiating. Burial will follow at Summit Lawn cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday from 5-9pm and again Monday prior to services.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to WBGL. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Nina Belle Pierce
June 03, 1923 - November 24, 2004
Nina Belle Pierce, 81 of Brazil died November 24, 2004 at Holly Hills Healthcare Facility. She had been a resident there for three years. She was born June 3, 1923 in Clay County the daughter of Albert and Rachel Buckle Hughes. She attended Staunton High School. June 15, 1941 she married John Raymond Pierce. She was a member of the 1st Baptist Church in Brazil. She was involved in the Shrine, and was active in the Daughters of the Nile. She worked at CBS for over 18 years as a press operator.
She is survived by her daughters, Linda Downey and husband Don of Knightsville, Donna Felty and Marsha Kirchner and husband Terry all of Brazil; 12 grandchildren, Matthew Downey and wife Jennifer, Rachel Jones and husband John, Sarah Downey, Loren Laughmiller, Dodie Julbert, Gerald Julbert, Jr., Gregory Julbert, Glen Julbert and wife Kelly; Rusty Cooper and wife Terri, Lena Felty, Terra Kirchner Baker and husband Glen, and Dr. Ethan Kirchner; 18 great-grandchildren, Nick Warner, Jami Warner, Lindsey Jones, Mica Jones, Tonya Bird, Crystal Bird, Gabrielle Julbert, Tristin Julbert, Brianna Julbert, Alexandra Julbert, Austin Cooper, Garrett Kirchner, Cole Baker, Sebastian Felty, Jennifer Baker, Glen Baker, Jr., Beth Jones, and Whitney Stidd; two brothers, Gayle Hughes and wife Lois and Guy Hughes; many nieces and nephews and extended family.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband passed away July 28, 1984; one sister Betty Hughes and one sister in law, Marian Hughes.
Graveside services will be held Sunday at 2:00 pm at Clearview cemetery with Pastor Howard Hughes officiating.

George Schmaltz
July 12, 1923 - November 29, 2004
George Schmaltz, 81, of Center Point, died at 2:40pm November, 29, 2004, at his residence. He was the son of Herman and Edna Givens Schmaltz. He was married to the late Wilma Reynolds Schmaltz on June 30, 1945. He was employed by Public Service as an electrician, where he assembled and repaired substations across the state of Indiana. He retired in 1978 following an accident which caused him to be paralyzed. Since his retirement he has courageously battled illness including paralysis and cancer. George was a member of Center Point Masonic lodge #597. He was also a charter member of the Center Point Fire Department; he served on the town board, and served as sexton of Center Point cemetery. Along with other talents he enjoyed woodworking, having made several pieces for his family. His hobbies included watching golf.
He is survived by one son David and wife Cindy of Brazil, two daughters Jeri Lynn and husband Ron Archer of Brazil, and Sally and husband Jay McGill of Martinsville. One Brother-in-law Bill and wife Clara Reynolds of Brazil, and a Sister-in-law Catherine Reynolds of Kirkland Az. Six grandchildren; Michael and wife Jami McGill of Princeton, Bradley and wife Tambra McGill of Linton, Noah Schmaltz of Brazil, Cisilee and husband Andy Phegley of Brazil, Ryan Archer of Sullivan and Riley Archer of Brazil. Six great-grandchildren; Ira, Benjamin, Zachary, and Grant McGill; and Matthew and Allison Phegley.
He was proceeded in death by his wife and parents.
Graveside services will be Friday at 11:00 am at Centerpoint cemetery with Brother Greg Comp officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of the Wabash Valley or Centerpoint cemetery.

Robert Marshel Tellechea
November 30, 2004 - December 01, 2004
Robert Marshel Tellechea, infant was born November 30, 2004 and died December 1, 2004, in Portsmouth Naval Hospital in Portsmouth Virginia.
He was the son of Luis M. Tellechea and Sarah Torbert Tellechea.
He is survived by his parents; two brothers Ian Tellechea and Luis Tellechea; grandparents, Paul and Sue Torbert of Brazil; great grandparents, Hilda Torbert and Mary and Marshel Shonkwiler of South Bend, IN.; aunt Rebekah Holmes and her husband Isaac currently stationed in Iraq; and uncle Matt and Tiffany Torbert of Brazil and many other great aunts and uncles and extended family.
He was preceded in death by paternal grandparents, Mercedes Tellechea and Luis Cordero Malfelano; great great grandmother Sarah Squires; and cousin Matthew Dylan Torbert.
Services will be held Saturday at 11am at French Funeral Home with Rev. William Price officiating. Burial will follow at Poff cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to services.
