Lee A. Fritsch
November 20, 1923 - April 29, 2003
Lee A. Fritsch, 79, of Brazil died April 29, 2003 at St. Vincent Clay Hospital.
He was born November 20, 1923 in Batesville, IN., the son of Charles and Flora Gindling Fritsch.
He graduated from Batesville High School Class of 1942. He graduated from Purdue University in 1949 with a degree in forestry.
January 23, 1954 he married Rita Deal, she survives. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, serving during WW II as a pilot.
He worked for Paul Casket Company in sales for many years, beginning at the Springfield Metallica Casket Company.
He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the American Legion, and the VFW. He was a member of the Annunciation Church. He was a past member of the Brazil Elks Lodge, and enjoyed golfing on golf leagues. He was also a member of the Last Mans Club.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, John Fritsch; and a great-grandson, Devon Ellis.
Survivors include his wife Rita Fritsch of Brazil; two sons, Father Michael Fritsch of Bloomington and Donald Fritsch of Brazil; grandchildren, Laura Ellis and Don Fritsch; great-grandchildren, Caleb Ellis and Zachery Ellis; one brother James Fritsch and wife Deloris of Batesville; a sister-in-law, Sally Fritsch of Phoenix; sister-in-law, Sister Dorothy Deal of St.Mary of the Woods; several nieces and nephews.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, May 3rd at 11:00 AM at Annunciation Church, 19 N. Alabama, Brazil, with Celebrant Father Michael Fritsch officiating. Concelebrants will be Fathers Gordon Mann and Bill Stumpf. Burial will follow at Clearview cemetery. Visitation will be Friday, May 2nd from 4:00 to 8:00 PM at the funeral home, with military walk-in at 6:30 PM and Prayer Wake service at 7:00 PM. Visitation will also be Saturday from 7:30 AM until 10:50 AM at the funeral home.

Gerald Eugene Guess
April 28, 1930 - August 30, 2002
Gerald Eugene Guess, 72, of Brazil, died Friday, August 30, 2002 at the home of his daughter. He was born April 28, 1930 in Terre Haute the son of Otto and Sarah Iolean Guess. He served in the US Army as a Corporal from 1947 to 1953 receiving 3 bronze stars. He worked for Edgecomb Metals before retiring in 1993. On January 2, 1950 he married Joan Feuquay who preceded him hi death. He was also preceded in death by his parents and a special friend, Rosemary Grandey.
He was a member of the VFW #1147 and American Legion Post 2, Moose Lodge 180 and Eagles Lodge 274. He enjoyed fishing and NASCAR racing.
Survivors include one son Gary Guess and wife Tracie of Coatsville, IN; two daughters Sherry Shorer and husband Joe of Ladoga, IN, and Debbie Snyder and husband Mike of New Ross, IN; one brother Allen Guess; seven grandchildren, Amber Shorer, Joel Shorer, Jennifer Fretz, Matt Snyder, Bobby Snyder, Heathe rKnoll and Holly Still.
Graveside services will be 11:00 am Wednesday, September 4th in Floral Park cemetery in Indianapolis with Brother Doug Parkey officiating. Visitation will be Tuesday, September 3rd from 4-8 pm at French Funeral Home.

Vestal Junior Hadley
February 06, 1927 - May 19, 2003
Vestal Junior Hadley, 76, of Brazil died May 19, 2003 at 5:05 AM at the Clay Health Center.
He was born February 6, 1927 in Clay County the son of Vestal and Ruth Bayer Hadley. He attended Brazil High School. He joined the US Army, serving during WW II. He worked for several years in retail sales, last at Wolf Clothing Store in Terre Haute. He was self employed as a painting contractor. He also owned and operated the Hadley Tavern in Brazil.
He was a member of the American Legion Post #2 and the VFW #1127; he was a 32nd Degree Mason; a member of Shrine; a past member of the Eagles and Moose Lodges in Brazil; and a past member of the Elks Lodge in Florida. He enjoyed hunting, collecting guns, and watching St. Louis Cardinals baseball.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Bob Hadley; and a niece Terrie Cooper.
He is survived be his sister, Marian Murphy of Brazil; two brothers, Jim Hadley of North Ft. Myers, FL and Bill Hadley of Brazil; and a niece Kay Krider of Springfield, IL and other extended family.
At his request cremation will take place. Graveside services will be held Tuesday, May 27, 2003 at 1:00 pm at Cottage Hill cemetery. Services will be provided by American Legion Post #2 and VFW #1127.

Donald Ray Garrison Jr
August 25, 1953 - August 15, 2003
Donald Ray Garrison, Jr., 49 of Brazil died August 15, 2003 at his parent’s residence in Staunton following an extensive battle with cancer.
He was born August 25, 1953 in England in an Air Force Hospital, the son of Donald Garrison, SR. and Carolyn Lett Garrison. He worked as an account manager for Meco, Corp. in Paris, IL. He had also worked in the past for Britt Tool and Great Dane.
He graduated from Staunton High School Class of 1971. He attended Miami University, DePauw University, Indiana University on an Air Force ROTC Scholarship. He later graduated from Indiana State University.
He was a sports enthusiast. He participated as a sponsor, coach and player in softball, bowling and golf.
Survivors include his parents; loving extended family including, an aunt Phyllis and her husband Gary Shulder of Pueblo, CO., Uncle, Billy Gene Garrison of Georgetown, TX., aunt Betty Robison and husband Jim, uncles Charles DeHart and Ronald DeHart all of Maryland.
Services will be held Tuesday at 7:00pm at French Funeral Home with Pastor Tony Alstott officiating. Visitation will be from 5-7 pm Tuesday prior to services. At his request cremation will take place.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made in his memory to Hospice of the Wabash Valley, 600 S. 1st St. Terre Haute, IN. 47807.

Jamie Lynn Maire Gillie
October 25, 1999 - October 24, 2003
Jamie Lynn Marie Gillie, 3 of Terre Haute, died October 24, 2003 in the emergency room of Union Hospital.
She was born October 25, 1999 in Terre Haute, the daughter of Billy Gillie and Amy Jo Henderson Gillie. She was looking forward to going to preschool after her birthday.
She is survived by her parents, her sister Tiffany Gillie, and her brother Bobby Gillie; grandparents, Cynthia Mason and husband William Mason Sr. of Terre Haute; Ronald Steve Henderson; Norma Gillie and James Gillie of Terre Haute; several aunts, uncles and cousins.
Services will be held Thursday at 2:00pm at French Funeral Home. Visitation will be one hour prior to services. Burial will follow at Highland Lawn cemetery.

Lillian Marie Gardner
August 31, 1919 - September 01, 2003
Lillian Marie McAllister Gardner, 84 of Mount Dora, Florida, formerly of Reelsville, died September 1, 2003 at the home of her daughter in law, in Middlesburg, FL.
She was born August 31, 1919 in Oka, Montana, the daughter of Charles August McAllister and Eva McFarland McAllister. She was a 1937 graduate of Reelsville High School. She married John Russell Gardner in 1937, he preceded her in death. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and homemaker.
She is survived by her son, Richard Wayne Gardner, her daughter in law, Betty Plato; four grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren, all of Florida; one brother Robert McAllister of Florida; two sisters, Katherine French of Brazil, and Lois MacDonald of Rockville; several nieces and nephews, survives her.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one son Ronald Dale Gardner and one grandson in infancy; two brothers, Charles McAllister and James McAllister.
A memorial service will be held Sunday September 7, at 2:00pm in Mt. Dora, at the Allen J. Harden Funeral Home, (352) 383-8178, with Rev. Brackman officiating. At her request, cremation was scheduled with burial of the ashes in the Gardner family plot in Mt. Dora cemetery.

Celia Maxine Hurst Bell
February 20, 1917 - March 12, 2004
Celia Maxine Hurst Bell, 87 of Brazil died March 12, 2004 at St. Vincent Clay Hospital. She had been a resident of the Cloverleaf Healthcare Facility. She was born February 20, 1917 in Terre Haute, the daughter of Clyde E. and Celia Latta Hurst. She was a graduate of Wiley High School, the Class of 1935 and was in the National Honor Society.
On May 5, 1948 she married Kenneth W. Bell. He passed away on February 2, 1980. She was employed for many years in the office of S. H. Pawley Lumber Company in Terre Haute. She was a former resident of the Reelsville area living in Ivanwald near Cataract Lake. She was a former member of the Cataract Yacht Club.
Following her wishes, private graveside services were held Monday at 2:00pm at Oak Hill cemetery.

Helen F. German
May 01, 1921 - April 08, 2004
Helen F. German, 82 of Friendswood, TX, formerly of Brazil, died April 8, 2004.
She had moved to Friendswood in September to be closer to her son and family. She was born May 1, 1921 in Brazil, the daughter of Charles H. Evans and Edna Clara Ealey Evans. She graduated from Brazil High School. She graduated from beauty school in Terre Haute, and opened her own beauty shop in her home on Chestnut Street in Brazil.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church. She was also a member of the Eastern Star.
She is survived by her son and daughter in law, Paul and Piper German of Friendswood, TX; two grandsons, Trey and Jonathan German; stepmother, Mae Evans and her daughter Jill Evans; and other extended family.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister Evelyn Evans, and her husband Paul German.
Services will be held Tuesday at 11:00am at French Funeral Home with Pastor Tony Alstott officiating. Burial will follow at Clearview cemetery. Visitation will be Monday from 6-8pm with Eastern Star service at 7:00pm.

Mary Gerber Elmore
April 21, 1925 - February 12, 2004
Mary Gerber (Jones) Elmore, 78 of Brazil died February 12, 2004 at 8:40am at the Clay Health Center.
She was born on April 21, 1925 in Clay County the daughter of Roy and Ruth Lucas Gerber.
She attended many small schools in Clay and Putman County and graduated from Brazil High School in 1943. Upon graduation, she moved to Indianapolis and made her home there. She retired from Western Electric in 1975 after 27 years of service. She was then employed by Tony Rays Dry Cleaners from 1979-1987 also in Indianapolis.
In 1950 she married Robert Jones who has preceded her in death June 8, 1987. On May 12, 1990 she married Thomas H. Elmore, he also preceded her in death August 23, 2003.
She was a member of the Harmony United Methodist Church; the Clay County Christian Quilters and the Pioneers Club of Western Electric.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, three brothers John Gerber, Harold Gerber, and Ted Gerber; one step son Phillip Jones.
She is survived by her brother and sister in law, Jim Gerber and wife Mabel of Harmony; two sisters Virginia Church and Mayme Johnson and her husband Don of Brazil; 4 step-children, David Jones and wife Aileen, Barbara Nixon and husband Jerry, Jane Bertocchi and husband Dick, and Linda Maresca and husand Bob; 21 step-grandchildren, many step-great-grandchildren; step daughter in law, Sandy Jones; 19 nieces and nephews; brother and sister in law, John and Linda Elmore; 4 aunts, Pauline Johnson, Lena Biggerstaff, Eva Beadling, and Betty Green.
Services will be held Sunday at 2:00pm at Lawson-Slack Funeral Home with Rev. Bob Kumpf officiating. Burial will follow at Union cemetery. Visitation will be Saturday from 4-8pm at again Sunday one hour prior to services.

David Godsey
October 01, 1935 - May 08, 2004
David Godsey, 68 of Rosedale, died suddenly May 8, 2004 in the emergency room of St. Vincent Clay Hospital.
He was born October 1, 1935 in Freedom, IN., the son of Edward and Elizabeth Crabb Godsey. Following high school, he entered the US Army. February 18, 1958 he married Dorothy Clegg Godsey, she survives. HE worked as a butcher, first at Home Packing in Terre Haute, and later he retired from Spendal Meats in Clinton. He was a member of the American Legion Post #48 in Rockville.
He is survived by his wife Dorothy Godsey of Rosedale; two sons and daughters in law, Herschel and Tina Godsey and Allen and Cindy Godsey all of Brazil; two daughters and sons in law, Brenda and Jim Brickey of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Lisa and David Crafton of Center Point; 7 grandchildren, Annie Brickey, Amanda Gouckenour, Candace Godsey, David Godsey, Jessica Crafton, Zachery Godsey, and Chad Godsey; 6 great-grandchildren, Maklia Whitten, Taylor Cooksey, Jayden Godsey, Jesse Gouckenour, Nicky Gouckenour, and Braden Godsey; one sister Dorothy Nevins of Brazil; several nieces, nephews and extended family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, Howard Godsey, Nelson Godsey, James Godsey, and Gene Godsey; one sister Loretta Brown.
At his request, cremation will take place and there will be no services. French Funeral Home assisted with arrangements.

Clair William Gassoway
June 01, 1923 - February 20, 2004
Clair William Gassoway, Sr., of Brazil formerly of Hagar Shores, MI., died February 20, 2004 at Union Hospital from complications following a heart attack.
He was born June 1, 1923 in Michigan City, IN. the son of Elmer and Olive Brown Gassoway. He graduated from Elston High School. He served in the U.S. Army during WW II. Returning home he served as an apprentice at the Trusket Boat Yard, and later was an independent contractor, in Benton Harbor, MI. In 1956 he became the storeowner of “Highway Market” in Hagar Shores, MI. He sold the business to his son in 1987 and retired to enjoy golf and fishing.
He was an avid golfer, and enjoyed John Wayne western movies, Pacer basketball and football.
He was preceded in death by his parents, the mother of his children, and first wife, Anne Damon Gassoway in 1994; one son Donald Alan Gassoway in 2003.
He is survived by his wife Hazel Hofmann Gassoway, whom he married June 8, 1996. He is also survived by his son Clair William Gassoway, Jr., and his wife Mary Jean; two grandchildren, Paul Gassoway and wife Liz, Sara McMillian and husband John; 4 great-grandchildren, Teresa, Charlotte, Nicolas, Gregory Gassoway; one brother Virgil Gassoway and wife Ida of Summerfield, FL.; one sister Roberta Morthland and husband Bill of Brazil; Step-children, Linda and Jim Minnick of Knightsville, and John T. Green and wife Sharon of Marshall, IL. nieces, nephews and other extended family.
A memorial service will be held Monday at 2:00pm at French Funeral Home with Pastor Tony Alstott officiating. Friends may gather one hour prior to the service. At his request, cremation will take place.
In lieu of flowers, the family request that memorial contributions be made to the Forest Park Golf Course Fund. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
