Linda L. Knopic (nee Surman)
age 58, of Wheeler, passed away Saturday, February 28, 2009. She was born December 18, 1950 in Gary, IN. She was a longtime Wheeler resident. Linda was a wildlife enthusiast and a member of the Indiana Master Naturalist – Dunes State Park, International Wildlife Rehabilitation Council, the National Wildlife Rehabilitator’s Association, Coffee Creek Watershed Conservancy, the Zona Sanctuary, and the Owl Acres Raptor Rehab. She was appointed to the Porter County Wildlife Management Board. Linda was also a 4H Dog Obedience Teacher and Superintendent.
She is survived by her loving husband of over 29 years, Dennis J. Knopic of Wheeler, IN; 2 loving daughters, Stephanie Knopic of Wheeler, IN; Margaret C. “Greta” (fiancé, Joseph Gallegos) Knopic of Hampton, VA; her parents, Robert and Helen Surman of Hebron, IN; 2 brothers, Robert Surman of Lake Eliza, IN; Ricky (Sallie) Surman of Valparaiso, IN; 1 sister, Virginia Alvarez of Lake Eliza, IN; Father and Mother-in-law, Steve and Willie Knopic of Inverness, FL; 1 brother-in-law, Mike Knopic of Lake Station, nephew Robert “Chucky” (Dawn) Alvarez, great-nephew, Dustin Alvarez, 1 great-niece, Jessica Alvarez and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and other family and friends.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Owl Acres Raptor Rehab.
Funeral services are Wednesday, March 4, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at Rees Funeral Home, 600 W. Old Ridge Road, Hobart with Rabbi Stanley Halpern officiating. Burial will follow at Mc Cool cemetery Portage. Visitation is Wednesday from 12:00 pm to 2:00 p.m. (the time of service) at Rees Funeral Home, Hobart Chapel.

Rebecca Yanez
age 80 of Lake Station passed away Sunday, March 1, 2009. Rebecca was born July 8, 1928 to the late Louisia & Maurilio Rodriquez and has been a life long Lake Station area resident. She was employed at the Hobart Township Headstart in Lake Station and a retired employee of the Lake Station Library and a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church.
Rebecca is survived by her loving family of 3 children, Rene (Loretta) Yanez of Portage; Robert (Paula) Yanez of New Chicago; Rina (Carl) Kurek of Lake Station; 15 Grandchildren; 5 Great-Grandchildren; many Nieces, Nephew, Aunts and Uncles.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Rene; parents; 1 grandson, Jake Yanez; 1 brother, Joseph Rodriquez; 1 sister, Helen Serratto.
Memorials are preferred to the American Heart Association.
Funeral Services will be held Thursday, March 5, 2009, 10am at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church with Rev. Eduardo Malagon Officiating.
Visitation will be from 9:00 – 10:00am prior to Service at St. Francis, Cremation will follow. Arrangements completed by Rees Funeral in Hobart, (219) 942-2109

CAROLE FUNKE
age 76, a lifetime resident of Portage, passed away on Sunday, March 1, 2009. She was born on July 23, 1932 in the Garyton area of Portage, the daughter of Carl and Dorothy Jaeger. She was married to Kenneth R. Funke on November 7, 1953 in Lake Station and enjoyed over 54 years of marriage. Carole was a homemaker who loved to feed the raccoons and deer, and take an outing to the casinos. She and Ken’s most favorite time was relaxing at Swan Lake in Allegan, Michigan.
Carole is survived by her sister Dolores McGrew, Tucson, AZ, her aunt Lillian Smith, Crown Point, cousins Joann (John) Krall, Calumet City, IL, Linda (George) Faulkner, Diamond Spring, CA, Nancy, VA, niece Nancy (Wayne Mahn) Bailey, Valparaiso, great niece Jennifer (Mario) Gonzalez, Portage, niece Audrey (Ralph) Slusser, Crown Point, nephew Roy McGrew, AZ, niece Gary (Anita) Jaeger, CA, niece Brenda Call, CA, and other loving family and dear friends, and especially Boots the cat. She was preceded in death by her parents, her loving husband Kenneth Funke, and 3 brothers.
Private family services were held and cremation followed. Memorials in Carole’s memory may be made to the Independent Cat Society. Rees Funeral Home – Olson Chapel were in charge of the arrangements whom you may call for information at (219) 762-3013

IRENE E. FRAZIER (Nee Call)
age 88 of Hobart, Indiana passed away Sunday, August 16, 2009. She was born January 17, 1921 to the late John and Lillian Call. Irene was a longtime member of the Merrillville United Methodist Church.
She is survived by one daughter, Lynne K. Burton of Sharpsburg, GA; one sister, Jean Fasel of Hobart, IN; one brother-in-law, Bill (Marie) Frazier, two grandchildren, Dawn (Nathan) Taylor of Sharpsburg, GA; Erin (Chad) Rawls of Bartlett, TN; three great-grandchildren, Rylan and Austin Taylor, and Mallory Rawls, and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Lillian Call, one brother, Cecil Call, one brother-in-law, John Frazier, one son-in-law, Alan Burton, and one grandson, Jordan Burton.
Visitation is Friday, August 28, 2009 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Rees Funeral Home, 600 West Old Ridge Road, Hobart. Funeral services are Friday, August 28, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at Rees Funeral Home, Hobart Chapel with Rev. Michelle Cobb officiating. Burial will follow at Hobart cemetery. In lieu of flowers, Irene’s family would rather a donation be made in Irene’s memory to Alzheimer’s Association of Indiana or the Merrillville United Methodist Church. Call (219) 942-2109

Mary Elizabeth Hartigan Campbell Walker
Mary Elizabeth Hartigan Campbell Walker passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family on Wednesday, August 19, 2009. Mary was the only child born to Stephen Paul and Mary Cecilia Hartigan on December 2, 1921 in McKeesport, Pennsylvania.
In 1943, Mary traveled to Montgomery, Alabama to marry her high school sweetheart and an aviation cadet, Charles E. Campbell Jr., prior to his deployment to Europe. Eventually, Mary and Chuck moved their growing family to Hobart in 1950. She soon joined the Hobart Jr. Women’s Club, and formed many lasting friendships.
Mary was widowed in 1960. Her abiding faith in God, courageous and brave spirit, the love and support of many dear friends, and her deep love for her children bolstered her throughout the eleven years ahead as a single parent of six. During these years, Mary was happily employed by Investors Diversified Services. She was recognized as the Central Division’s first Secretary of the Year in 1966.
In 1970 Mary married Robert L.R. Walker. Together, the couple enjoyed travel, friends and family, and participation in many local organizations. Mary enjoyed the society and challenge of playing bridge and an occasional golf game.
Mary was an active member of St. Bridget’s Parish for 59 years. Mary helped establish the local chapter of Meals on Wheels, The Caring Place, and HIEDC.
Preceding Mary in death are her parents, her husbands, Charles E. Campbell Jr., and Robert L.R. Walker, and grandson, Ben Walker.
Mary is survived by her six children: Tina (The late William) Thomas; Marc (Shirley) Campbell; Mary (Charles) Boston; Beth (Garvey) Dickson, all of Hobart; Nan (Charles) Aton of Phoenix, AZ; Megan (Will) Klein of Chesterton; two step-sons, Mark and David Walker, both of Oregon. She was a loving grandmother to Ann (Brian) Davis; Andrew Thomas; Aaron Campbell; Stephen (Karen) Campbell; Kate (Tim) Lundy; Becky (John) Boyle; Kelly Boston; Megan (Eric) Denny; Jessica (Robbie) Rud; Adam Stewart; Gayle (Mike) James; Donna (Jason) Cooke; Jim Dickson; Clair; Brian; Matthew Aton; Eliot and Emma Klein; Adam Walker; Bethany Walker. Mary is also survived by 20 Great-Grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, please make a charitable donation in Mary’s name to the Hobart Food Pantry and St. Bridget Catholic Church.
Morning Prayers will be offered Saturday, August 22, 2009 at 9:30am at Rees Funeral Home, 600 W. Old Ridge Rd., Hobart, IN followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Bridget Church at 10am with Rev. Dominic V. Bertino Officiating. Burial will follow at Chapel Lawn cemetery. Rosary on Friday, August 21, 200 at 4 pm. Visitation on Friday 3-8pm at Rees Funeral Home, Hobart Chapel, (219) 942-2109

PAUL D. ANDERSON
age 50, of Lake Station, passed away Sunday, August 16, 2009 at home. Paul was a Lake Station resident since 1983 and employed at Altaquip, Inc. as a service technician. He was formerly employed at Sears Service and enjoyed fishing & camping.
He is survived by his loving wife, Bernadine Reed-Anderson, son, Paul Lee of Florida, daughter, Jaime (Jerry) Shaner of Lakeland, FL, granddaughter, Fantasia House, brother, Randy (Amelia) Gibson and 2 sisters, Mary Evelyn Pitts of Georgia and Bobbie LaRue. He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul Albert and Paula (nee Hollwell) Anderson and brother, Robert Allen Tidwell.
There will be a memorial service Saturday, August 22, 2009 11:00 am at Rees Funeral Home, 600 W. Old Ridge Rd., Hobart, with Rev. Richard Brown officiating. Cremation preceded the memorial service. Friends may meet with the family Saturday from 10-11 am at Rees Funeral Home, Hobart Chapel, 219-942-2109

EDWARD SALAPSKI
age 80, a longtime resident of Merrillville passed away on Wednesday, August 19, 2009. He was born on April 21, 1929 in Gary, Indiana the son of John and Bernice (nee Buczek) Salapski. Ed proudly served his county in the United States Airforce. He was married to Betty Rearick. He was a retired Industrial Engineer for U.S. Steel – Gary Works for over 35 years. Ed attended St. Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church, was a member of the U.S. Steel Supervisors Club, a member of the American Legion, and the Polish National Alliance. He was a great supporter and fan of the Chicago White Sox and Chicago Bears.
Ed is survived by his loving family; wife Betty Salapski (nee Rearick), Merrillville, daughter Sheryl (Skip) Schafer, Hobart, sons Mark (Amy) Salapski, Aurora, OH, and John Salapski, Tucson, AZ, grandchildren Shannon (Brandon) Pierson, Meghan Schafer, Sean Schafer, and Steven Salapski, great-grandson Adam Pierson, sister Joan (Allen) Richmond, Schererville, and other loving family and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and his daughter-in-law Sharry Salapski (nee Macchia).
A visitation of Edward Salapski will be held from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Friday, August 21, 2009 at Rees Funeral Home – Hobart Chapel, 600 West Old Ridge Road, Hobart. A prayer service will be offered Friday evening at 6:00 pm. A short visitation and prayers will be offered from 12:00 noon until 12:30 pm on Saturday, August 22, 2009 at Rees Funeral Home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church, 801 West 73rd Avenue, Merrillville, with Father Brian Chadwick, officiating. ALADEAN MARIE JOHNSON
“Deanie”, age 87, of Hobart, Indiana passed away August 19, 2009. Aladean lived most of her life in Hobart as a homemaker and a seamstress. She loved to draw and sew and to read and had a flair for design and creativity. She came to Gary as a child from Boone, Iowa. After graduating from Emerson High School in 1941, she attended design school in Chicago until WWII called her into service at USSteel. After the war, she spent many years working at Goldblatt’s in downtown Gary. Married to Harold “Swede” Johnson for nearly 25 years at his passing, Aladean had settled into life in Hobart raising children, David Michael, and daughter, Karen Ruth. Aladean now enjoys her coffee klatches in Heaven with all her friends. Aladean was preceded in death by husband, Harold in 1977; grandson, Michael, in 1983 and her brother, Charles Allison.
She will be missed by her son, David, and daughter-in-law, Judy Price Johnson, of Moses Lake, Washington; her daughter, Karen Johnson Lange , son-in-law, Heinz Lange , of Seattle, Washington. Also surviving are granddaughter, Tina Marie Lopez, grandson-in-law, George Lopez of Schererville; grandson, Bill Johnson, granddaughter-in-law, Breanna, of Little Rock, Arkansas; grandson, Dale Johnson, of Ellensburg, Washington; great-grandchildren, Jessica and Sarah Lopez of Schererville and, the newest member of the family, Madison Johnson, of Little Rock. Also surviving is nephew, Doug Allison, and a host of good neighbors and friends and caregivers from the old neighborhood.
There will be no memorial service held as Aladean wished. The family requests, in lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Leukemia Society of America, 921 East 86th Street, Suite 205, Indianapolis, Indiana 46204, to honor Aladean and in memory of her grandson, Michael. Susan (nee Grinder) Rettig
Susan (nee Grinder) Rettig, age 35 of Cedar Lake, Indiana passed away Sunday, August 16, 2009. She was a lifetime resident of Northwest Indiana.
Susan is survived by her loving family: daughter Wendy (Jesse Harrell) Windsor of Crown Point, IN. son Matthew Shepherd of Florida, Sister Sherry (Steve) Windsor of Portage, IN., Brother Ronald Grinder Jr. of Lake Station, IN., grandfather John “papa” Grinder and numerous nieces and other loving family members and friends.
Susan is preceded in death by her son Michael Shepherd, father Ronald Grinder Sr. and mother Melinda Conder.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the family of Susan Rettig.
A memorial luncheon will be held August 22, 2009 at the American Legion Post 100 1899 Central Ave. Lake Station IN. at 3:00 p.m.
