Charles V. Nartker of Fort Wayne, owner/partner of Key III Candies, died Monday, Dec. 23, 2002, at Riverbend Healthcare Center. "Much-loved husband, father, grandfather and friend. His zest for life and his oversized optimism never wavered." The Kalida, Ohio, native was a member of St. Therese Catholic Church, American Legion Post 241, a World War II veteran and recipient of the Purple Heart. Surviving are his wife, Phyllis E.; a son, Stanley of Dublin, Ohio; daughters Judy Kinder and Cheryl Dillon, both of Fort Wayne, and Janice Ward of Chicago; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Ruth Ann, five sisters and four brothers. Services are 10 a.m. Friday at St. Therese Catholic Church, 2304 Lower Huntington Road. Calling is one hour before services. Calling is also from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Elzey-Patterson-Rodak Home for Funerals, 6810 Old Trail Road. Burial with military graveside services will be at Catholic cemetery. Memorials are to Parkinson's Foundation or the church Building Fund.

Leolaruth "Leola" M. Purk
Fort Wayne - 1925-2002

Leolaruth "Leola" M. Purk, 77, of Fort Wayne, a retired manager, died Saturday, Dec. 21, 2002, in Fort Wayne. The Oxford, Neb., native retired in 1986 from G.C. Murphy's after 30 years of service and had worked for Richard's Restaurant in New Haven as a cashier. She was a member of Emanuel Lutheran Church in New Haven. Surviving are sons Raymond and Larry, both of Fort Wayne; daughters Charlotte Sarrazine of New Haven and Lynda Spieth of Monroeville; brothers Martin Heller of Avilla and Robert Heller of Pleasant Lake; nine grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. Her husband, Kenneth R., preceded her in death. Services are 10 a.m. Friday at Emanuel Lutheran Church, 800 Green St., New Haven, with calling one hour before services. Calling is also from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at E. Harper & Son Funeral Home, 740 Indiana 930 E., New Haven. Burial will be at the church cemetery. Memorials are to Visiting Nurse Service & Hospice or the church.

Fort Wayne - 1916-2002

Ruth C. Remenschneider, 86, of Fort Wayne, a member of Christ Lutheran Women's Group, died Sunday, Dec. 22, 2002, at Golden Years Homestead.

The Fort Wayne native was a homemaker. Surviving are daughters Sharon Gerig of New Haven, Sandra Beerbower of Harlan and Sue Litzenberger of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.; sisters Irene Dinkel and Evelyn Shoaff, both of Fort Wayne; a brother, Raymond Geiger of Fort Wayne; eight grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. Her husband, Louis, preceded her in death. Services are 1:30 p.m. Friday at Christ Lutheran Church, 4402 Park St., Woodburn, with calling one hour before services. Calling is also from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at E. Harper & Son Funeral Home, 740 Indiana 930 E., New Haven. Burial will be at church cemetery. Daniel W. Schuricht
Fort Wayne

Daniel W. Schuricht, 57, of Fort Wayne, a police officer from 1970 to 1994, died Sunday, Dec. 22, 2002, at home. "Daniel enjoyed fishing and Civil War history."

The Fort Wayne native was a member of Disabled American Veterans, Vietnam Veterans Association and was a U.S. Air Force veteran. Surviving are sons Jason, Andrew and Dave, all of Fort Wayne; a daughter, Amy Schuricht of Raleigh, N.C.; and one grandchild. Services are 10 a.m. Saturday at D.O. McComb & Sons Foster Park Funeral Home, 6301 Fairfield Ave., with calling from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday. Graveside services will be at a later date. Memorials are to the family.

Michael E. Claymiller
New Haven - 1947-2003

Michael E. Claymiller, 55, of New Haven, an assembler at Parker Hannifin for three years, died Saturday, Feb. 22, 2003, at Parkview Hospital.

The Fort Wayne native had also been a truck driver for more than 20 years, a member of Howard Bandelier VFW Post 2457 and a Vietnam War U.S. Army veteran. Surviving are his wife, Harriett; daughters Jennifer Barlett of Fort Wayne and Dawn Claymiller of New Haven; his mother, Barbara L. Claymiller of Lehigh Acres, Fla.; a sister, Cheryl Powell; and his grandmother, Agnes Hughes of Fort Wayne. Services are 10 a.m. Thursday at E. Harper & Son Funeral Home, 740 Indiana 930 E., New Haven, with calling from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday. Burial with military graveside services will be at Lindenwood cemetery, Fort Wayne. Ruth E. McCurdy
Fort Wayne

Ruth E. McCurdy, 67, of Fort Wayne, a retired medical assessor, died Thursday, Feb. 20, 2003, at Applewood Health & Rehab Center.

The Philadelphia native retired in 1995 from Pennsbury Family Medicine after 15 years of service and was one of the original female Santa Claus helpers for 35 years. She was involved with Sunday night Ball & Chain League at Jubilee Lanes in Langhorne, Pa. Surviving are a son, William J. of Westfield, N.J.; a daughter, Deborah Margerum of Fort Wayne; and three grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, William C., and a sister. Services are noon Thursday at D.O. McComb & Sons Lakeside Park Funeral Home, 1140 Lake Ave., with calling one hour before services. Memorials are to family for grandson Troy Margerum.

William Wehrle, 89, of Fort Wayne, a retired foreman, died Monday, Feb. 24, 2003, at Renaissance Village.

The Fort Wayne native retired in 1977 from General Electric Co. after 47 years of service and was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Surviving are a daughter, Janice Gossett of Brooklyn, Mich.; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret M., a son, Michael, two brothers and three sisters. Graveside services are 9:30 a.m. Thursday at Lindenwood cemetery, Bohn Chapel, 2324 W. Main St. Calling is from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at D.O. McComb & Sons Lakeside Park Funeral Home, 1140 Lake Ave.

New Haven - 1920-2003

Gerald A. Grunden Sr., 82, of New Haven, a World War II U.S. Army Air Corps veteran, died Sunday, Feb. 23, 2003, at Parkview Hospital.

The Broughton, Ohio, native retired in 1982 from International Harvester Co. as a guard after 29 years of service. He was a member of American Legion Post 330. Surviving are his wife, Vivian; sons Gerry of Fort Wayne and Bob of Fresno, Calif.; a sister, Elsie Hamm of New Haven; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Services are 3 p.m. Thursday at E. Harper & Son Funeral Home, 740 Indiana 930 E., New Haven, with calling from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday. Burial with military graveside services will be at IOOF cemetery, New Haven. Memorials are to the National Neurofibromatosis Foundation.

Earl D. Stauffer, 87, of Fort Wayne, a retired engineer, died Saturday, Feb. 22, 2003, at Golden Years Homestead.

The Berne native retired in 1974 from General Electric Co. after 40 years of service. He was a member of Peace United Church of Christ, past president of GE Quarter Century Club and former member of the Lions Club. Surviving are a daughter, Nancy Divelbiss of Leo-Cedarville; three stepdaughters; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by wives Edith C. and Mary and two brothers. Services are 11 a.m. Wednesday at Peace United Church of Christ, 9123 Aboite Center Road, with calling one hour before services. Calling is also from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at D.O. McComb & Sons Pine Valley Park Funeral Home, 1320 E. Dupont Road. Burial will be at Leo cemetery. Memorials are to the church.

Louise Whitehurst, 84, of Fort Wayne, a retired food service worker, died Sunday, Feb. 23, 2003, at Parkview Hospital. "She was a beloved mother and grandmother." The Dunkirk native retired in 1981 from Fort Wayne Community Schools after 15 years of service. She was a member of Memorial Baptist Church, Shriners Widows Club, American Legion Post 296 and Eagles Aerie 248. Surviving are a son, David of Fort Wayne; a daughter, Pam Waltemath of Spencerville; brothers Doyle Hatch of Fishers and Eldon Hatch of Sterling, Va.; sisters Maxine Burke of Portland, Jama Gibson of Marysville, Wash., Leotta Meadnoyer of Glendale, Calif., and Janice Horine of Fort Wayne; and three grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, James, two brothers and two sisters. Services are 1 p.m. Friday at D.O. McComb & Sons Lakeside Park Funeral Home, 1140 Lake Ave., with calling from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday. Burial will be at Covington Memorial Gardens. Memorials are to the church.

Helen Sheefel, 95, of Fort Wayne, a member of the Church of God, died Sunday, Feb. 23, 2003, at home.

"Beloved Mother and Grandmother who loved life, music and her church." The Pierceton native was a homemaker. Surviving are her husband, Gerald O.; a daughter, Donna J. Klammer of Kansas City, Mo.; stepdaughters Patricia Stetler, Carolyn Shoemaker and Marjorie Dresseler, all of Fort Wayne; stepsons Robert of Granite Bay, Calif., and Gerald C. and David, both of Fort Wayne; two grandchildren; 24 stepgrandchildren; 30 stepgreat-grandchildren; and 10 stepgreat-great-grandchildren. Services are 2 p.m. Wednesday at C.M. Sloan & Sons Funeral Home, 1327 N. Wells St., with calling from noon until services. Burial will be at Mount Zion cemetery, Pleasant Lake. Carl A. Okey, 68, of Bluffton, a truck driver, died Sunday, Sept. 22, 2002, at Bluffton Regional Medical Center. The Paxton, Ill., native retired from Simpson Industries after 20 years of service. He was a Korean War Navy veteran and member of American Legion Post 111. Surviving are his wife, Marilyn; sons Kent and Kevin, both of Bluffton; and two grandchildren. She had worked at Astatula Baptist Church as secretary and was active in Christian Childs Work for more than 44 years. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Winter Garden. Surviving are her husband, Allen; daughters Sheila Howell of Ocoee, Pam Fulton of Greenville, S.C., and Penny Primm of Indiana Trails, N.C.; sons West of Winter Garden, Mike of Simpsonville, S.C., and Bill of Hot Springs, Ark.; and 16 grandchildren. The Warsaw native worked at Warsaw Coil. She was a past member of Fellowship Baptist Church, a member of TY Beanie Baby Club and loved to travel. Surviving are her husband, Billy; a son, Tim of Warsaw; a daughter, Michelle Harman of Silver Lake; her mother, Katharine Smaltz of Leesburg; a brother, Danny R. Smaltz of Leesburg; and sisters Carol Hiss of Leesburg, Patty Hoffert of Pierceton, and Lana Moschel of Kiss-immee, Fla.; and four grandchildren. Services are 10 a.m. Wednesday at Titus Funeral Home, Warsaw, with calling from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday. Burial will be at Leesburg cemetery, Leesburg, Va.
