Frances D. Peacock
Frances D. Duffy Peacock, 82, of 167 W. 240 S., died at 1:07 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 3, 2002, in Home Hospital.

She was born Oct. 20, 1919, in Paterson, N.J., and had resided in New Jersey until coming to Lafayette in 1990. She married William Ernest Peacock in Townsend, Md., and he died in 1988.

Mrs. Peacock graduated from Central High School in Paterson in 1936. She received a bachelor's degree from New Jersey Teachers College in 1940 and a master's degree from Newark State College in 1967.

From 1954 to 1959, she worked for the Army Aviation section at Fort Monmouth, N.J. She taught special education at several New Jersey schools from 1959 to 1965. She was a disabilities determiner for the state of New Jersey from 1965 until she retired in 1984.

She was active in the PTA, various teacher organizations and the Monmouth Drama Club. She was an active volunteer at the Lambert Castle where the Passic County Historical Society is housed.

She volunteered in the Indiana Room of the Tippecanoe County Public Library, Lafayette Urban Ministry and tutored at the Lafayette Adult Resource Academy. She was active in community affairs related to disabled people, especially those who are wheelchair-bound and those with polio. She was a member of Senior Citizens and enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, traveling by train and reading.

Surviving is a son, Frederick Peacock (wife: Brenda) of Battle Ground.

Eva N. Johnson
OTTERBEIN -- Eva Naomi Johnson, 104, of Otterbein, died at 7:35 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2002 in St. Claire Healthcare.

She was born Nov. 7, 1897 at No. 10 in Tippecanoe County. She has been an Otterbein resident since 1904.

She married James Quigg in 1930. He preceded her in death in 1938. In 1956, she married Roy Johnson, and he died in 1976.

Mrs. Johnson had worked for a telephone company, Alcoa and Purdue University.

She was a self-taught oil painter and began painting when she was in her 60s. She won numerous awards at county fairs for her paintings and had been represented by the Ann Nathan Gallery in Chicago. She had two solo exhibitions at St. Elizabeth Medical Center and two solo exhibits at Lafayette Savings Bank. She was the featured artist at the Greater Lafayette Museum of Art in 1997. Her numerous, still life, primitive and landscape images were painted on canvas, Masonite and saw blades depicting all four seasons of the year.

Survivors include a niece whom she raised, Mary Alice Best Brenner of Decatur, Ill.; a stepdaughter, Ruth Pollard of Lafayette; and a stepson, L.G. Johnson of Terre Haute.

William D. Gustafson
William David Gustafson, 18, of Lafayette, died Wednesday, Feb. 6 2002 as a result of injuries sustained in an auto accident.

He was born March 2, 1983 in Lafayette and worked as a carpetlayer.

He was a member of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church of Lafayette.

Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Lorena and William Schnepp of Lafayette, his father, William David Wynn of Lafayette, and a brother, Christopher Schnepp of Lafayette.

Services are Saturday near Paris, Ill.

Una M. Lashbrook
Una M. Lashbrook, 82, of 1205 N. 14th St., died at 7:10 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 7, 2002, at St. Anthony Healthcare in Lafayette.

She was born July 18, 1919, in Boswell. She resided in Rensselaer since 1946, moving to Lafayette in 1999. She was raised in Reynolds and attended the Reynolds St. James Lutheran School.

On Feb. 26, 1942, in Reynolds, she married Elmer Lashbrook, and he survives.

Mrs. Lashbrook was a homemaker. She was a member of the St. Luke Lutheran Church of Rensselaer.

Surviving are two sons, E. David "Lucky" Lashbrook Jr. (wife: Lynn) of Indianapolis and Ronald Lashbrook (wife: Marlene) of West Lafayette, and a sister, Inez Sims of Monticello.

E. Bernice Murphy
Ethel Bernice McMurtrie Murphy, 91, formerly of the Lafayette and Veedersburg areas, died at 3:34 a.m. Friday, Feb. 8, 2002, at Country Care Nursing Center, Williamsport.

She was born in Fountain County on Nov. 13, 1910. She graduated from Newtown High School and the Indiana Business College in Lafayette. She had lived for several years in Lafayette and later resided in Veedersburg for 10 years before moving to the nursing center in May of 2001.

She married Archie Murphy in February of 1962 in Lafayette, and he preceded her in death in January of 1976.

Mrs. Murphy had worked as a secretary at Purdue University in the Creamery Department for 33 years before retiring. After retirement, she and her husband ran Murphy's Antique Store on E. Main St. in Lafayette.

She enjoyed bowling, Bingo and outdoor life. She had spent most of her retired life caring for stray animals.

Survivors include a brother, Dallas McMurtrie of Veedersburg, and two sisters, Ruth Hamlin and Clea Mae Butts (husband: Burlin), both of Kokomo.

Anna Belle Oilar
Anna Belle Kessinger Oilar, 79, of Lafayette, died at 6:45 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, 2002, in her daughter's residence.

She was born March 27, 1922, in Portland Mills, and spent her life in Lafayette. She graduated from Wea High School in 1941.

She married Kenneth R. Oilar on Feb. 9, 1927, and he preceded her in death Sept. 25, 1993.

Mrs. Oilar was a legal secretary for Hanly Hammel Attorney at Law and worked previously for Kirby Risk and Yorkshire Club. She was a member of Evergreen Wesleyan Church of Lafayette.

She enjoyed traveling, the Senior Center and entering all types of contests.

Surviving are a son, John R. Oilar (wife: Diane Haffner Oilar) of Crawfordsville; a daughter, Fay McKillip (husband: Paul) of West Lafayette; and a brother, John C. Kessinger of Crawfordsville.

John R. Eberle
John R. Eberle, 74, formerly of 1322 Parkway Court, died at 1:40 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, 2002, at St. Anthony Health Care, where he had resided since June 18, 2001. He had been ill for five years.

He was born May 15, 1927, in Lafayette. He attended St. Boniface grade school and graduated from Jefferson High School. He graduated from Purdue University in 1953.

He was a teacher and a coach. He began coaching basketball and baseball at age 14 at St. Boniface grade school. He was appointed the head coach at St. Boniface at age 16 when the coach at the time left for military service.

He coached in summer baseball programs for more than 25 years. He coached and managed the Lafayette Columbians semi-professional baseball team for more than 14 years. He was a summer grounds keeper at Loeb Stadium for more than 20 years for the Colt League, Columbians, American Legion and Lafayette Professional Baseball.

Mr. Eberle was appointed the first varsity coach of baseball and basketball at Central Catholic High School. He coached both sports for 13 years. He taught civics and social studies while at Central Catholic. He taught at Tecumseh Junior High School and at Jefferson High School before his retirement.

On Jan. 23, 2002, the new gym at Central Catholic High School was dedicated "The John R. Eberle Gym" in his honor.

He was a lifelong member of St. Boniface Catholic Church and was a member of the Indiana State Teachers Association. He was an Army veteran, serving in Europe from July of 1945 until January of 1947.

There are no immediate survivors.

William E. Deckard
IDAVILLE -- William E. "Big Bill" Deckard, 66, of 201 E U.S. Highway 24, died at 3:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 15, 2002, at his residence.

He was born Aug. 19, 1935, in Norman. He married Sue Ann Stover on March 17, 1981, in Monticello, and she died Feb. 20, 1993.

Mr. Deckard worked in construction as a labor foreman. He later worked for Wilson's in Logansport for 22 years. He was a member of Burnettsville Christian Church.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, mushroom hunting and gardening. He was a former member of the Eagles and Veterans of Foreign Wars lodges. He served in the Army in Germany from 1956 to 1958.

Surviving are two daughters, Debra K. Butler of Tucson and Patricia A. Wheeler of Livermore, Calif.; three sons, Ronald W. Deckard, William E. Deckard and James G. Deckard, all of Bedford; three stepdaughters, Sandra Walters and Lauri D. Weaver, both of Idaville, and Leslie Berkshire of Lafayette; and two sons, Marty J. Stover of Burnettsville and Neal E. Stover of Idaville.

Eleanor R. Myers
OXFORD -- Eleanor R. Myers, 87, of Oxford, died at 6:10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, 2002 in the Oxford Community Living Center, 610 S. Crown St.

Born March 29, 1914 in Martinsville, Ill., she came to Oxford in 1982 and had been a resident of the nursing home for 16 years.

Her marriage was to Aubert Myers, who preceded her in death in November 1976.

Mrs. Myers was a homemaker. She enjoyed cooking.

Surviving are two sons, Larry Myers of Littleton, Colo., and Gary Myers of Versailles, Ill.

Deloris E. Eberle
MONTICELLO -- Deloris E. "Dotty" Eberle, 76, of 1120 N. Main St., died at 4:05 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2002, in the Monticello Healthcare Center.

Born Aug. 30, 1925, in Delphi, she graduated from Delphi High School.

Mrs. Eberle was a clerk in the liberal arts department at Purdue University. After leaving Purdue, she started Tradewinds Realty in Englewood, Fla., where she lived for 25 years. She returned to Monticello last spring.

She enjoyed golfing, fishing, mushroom hunting and porcelain painting.

Her marriage was to Charles J. Eberle on Oct. 23, 1948, in Lafayette. He died Aug. 31, 1974.

Survivors include a daughter, Tara Pelfree of Monticello; one brother, Robert Larimore of Lafayette; and four sisters, JoAnn VanNatta of Battle Ground, and Barbara Nelson, Edith Isaacs and Evelyn Pritchard, all of Delphi.
