MORRIS D. ATKINSON

Morris D. Atkinson, 89, of Liberal, died Monday, March 10, 2003, at Southwest Medical Center in Liberal.

He was born Aug. 9, 1913, to Harvey and Bennie (Waller) Atkinson in Turpin, Okla.

He married Louise Whittet Dec. 4, 1933, in Liberal. She survives.

He was a farmer and owner/operator of Atkinson Construction Company for 40 years.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church and the 20th Century Sunday School class.

He was a lifetime resident of Liberal.

Other survivors include, one daughter, Patsy Harrison and husband, Arnold, Chula Vista, Calif.; one daughter-in-law, Kathy Atkinson, Shawnee; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son, Donald Atkinson; two brothers, Waller and Marvin Atkinson; three sisters, Hazel Klipp, Gladys Dollarhide, and Doris Smith.

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church with the Pastor Dr. Warren R. "Butch" Smith presiding.

A register book will be available to sign from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Wednesday at Kitch-Brenneman Funeral Home.

Memorials are suggested to First United Methodist Church in care of Kitch-Brenneman Funeral Home, 1212 W. 2nd, Liberal, KS 67901.

HAROLD J. HOFFMAN

MINNEOLA ญญ Harold J. "Bud" Hoffman, 77, died Saturday, March 8, 2003, at Pondre Valley Hospital in Fort Collins, Colo.

He was born Dec. 21, 1925, to Leo and Kate Hoffman in Minneola.

He attended Minneola schools.

He was a U.S. Army veteran, receiving an honorable discharge in 1952. He was a farmer while living in Minneola, and later retired from the U.S. Postal Service after 33 years in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Survivors include, three sons, Bob Hoffman, Bend, Ore., Tim Hoffman, Colorado Springs, and Don Hoffman, Ft. Collins, Colo.; two daughters, Jerrilyn Brecce, Wetmore, Colo.; and Tina Mertens, Loveland, Colo.; and three grandchildren, Hannah, Bailey, and Jordan.

Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. John's Evangelist Catholic Church in Loveland.

CHALMER L. GIFT

BALKO, Okla. ญญ Chalmer Leon Gift, 75, died Wednesday, March 12, 2003, in Wichita.

He was born May 9, 1927, to Ben and Maude Mae (Crum) Gift in Beavery County.

He married Grace Eva Buschman on March 9, 1958, in Balko. She survives.

He attended school Beaver County.

He was a farmer and rancher.

Other survivors include, five sons, Rocky Gift, Woodward, Okla., Rusty Gift, Balko, Freddie Leon Gift, Roy, N.M., Nicholas Gift, also of Balko, and Mark Gift, Tulsa, Okla.; two daughters, Lola Gift, Tulsa, and Carol Dahlberg, Liberal; one brother, Ivan Gift, Whitesands, Calif.; two sisters, LaFaun Karber, Balko, and Donna Belle Penner, Phoenix, Ariz.; nine grandchildren; numerous other relatives.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Balko Baptist Church in Balko with Harold Bollinger presiding.

Burial will be at Bethany Cemetery in Balko, under the direction of Clark Funeral Service in Beaver, Okla.

CHARLES DAY

Charles Day, 67, of Liberal, died Thursday, March 13, 2003, at Southwest Medical Center in Liberal.

He was born Nov. 20, 1935, to Charles L.J. and Flora M. (Parish) Day in Thomas, Okla.

He married Shirley M. Adams March 8, 1958 in Liberal. She survives.

He attended the Kansas School for the Deaf in Olathe, and he was a long-time resident of Liberal.

He worked for Ideal bakery for 12 years, and was a welder for Tradewinds Industries for 28 years, having retired in 1989.

Other survivors include one son, Darren Day and wife, Lyn, Liberal; one daughter, Sherry Atwell and husband, Doug, Perry, Iowa; two brothers, George McNitt and wife, Virginia, Liberal, and Johnny Day, Odessa, Texas; two sisters, Ida Mae Rowe and husband, Gary, Oklahoma City, Okla., and Linda Rinehart and husband, Dana, Fargo, Okla.; and nine grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers; and one sister.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Assembly of God Church in Liberal with Jim Garcia presiding.

Burial will be at Liberal Cemetery in Liberal.

Friends may call from 1 to 8 p.m. today at Miller Mortuary in Liberal.

The family suggests memorials to the AMerican Diabetes Association or American Cancer Research in care of Miller Mortuary, 908 N. Lincoln Ave., Liberal, KS 67901.

MARY K. HALE

PLAINS ญญ Mary Katherine Hale, 99, died Thursday, March 13, 2003, at Overland Park Manor in Overland Park.

She was born Nov. 26, 1903, to William Crosson and Susie Catherine (Lavey) Foote in Stevens County.

She married Leonard Wesley Hale Oct. 26, 1921, in Meade. He died Jan. 2, 1963.

She was a long-time resident of Plains.

She was a homemaker and had worked in food service at the school district.

She was a member of Plains Christian Church in Plains.

Survivors include one daughter, Alice Brown and husband, Jim, Merriam; five grandchildren, Mary Alice Ebbs, Susan Beougher, Donna Brown, Jim Brown Jr., and Leonard Brown; and seven great-grandchildren, Chris Ebbs, Stacy Beougher, Danielle Beougher, Mathieu Beougher, Rene Beougher, Andrew Brown, and Aaron Brown.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Plains Christian Church in Plains with Mickey Birney presiding.

Burial will be at Plains Cemetery in Plains.

Friends may call from 1 to 7 p.m. today at Fidler-Orme Mortuary in Meade.

Memorials are suggested to Plains Christian Church in care of Fidler-Orme Mortuary, 212 S. Fowler St., Meade, KS 67864.

MARVEL E. SHOVER

Marvel Edwin Shover, 82, died Friday, March 14, 2003, at Southwest Medical Center in Liberal.

He was born June 18, 1920, to John O. and Blanche J. (Edwards) Shover in Ness County.

He married Constance "Connie" R. Rinker Feb. 5, 1944. She survives.

He graduated from Beeler High School and attended junior college in Hutchinson. He worked for Boeing Aircraft Company before entering the U.S. Navy, where he served until 1946.

He moved to Liberal in 1951.

He worked for Northern Natural Gas Company retiring in 1984 after 38 years.

He had been a member of Liberal Order of Odd Fellows serving as Past Noble Grand, served as Past Exalted Ruler of the Liberal Benevolent Protective Order of Elks, and a member of the Do-Si-Do Square and Round Dance Club.

He was a member of First Baptist Church.

His hobbies included camping, horseshoes and gardening.

Other survivors include three daughters, Linda Payne and husband, Paul, Liberal, Patti Ericks and husband, Craig, Rapid City, S.D., and Debbie Rosel and husband Steve, Topeka; one sister, Elsie Wall, Iola; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters; one brother; and one niece.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church in Greensburg with the Pastor Marvin George presiding.

Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Greensburg.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Fleener's Funeral Home in Greensburg.

Memorials are suggested to American Cancer Society or the donor's choice in care of Fleener's Funeral Home in Greensburg.
