FREDDIE M. JONES

Freddie Martin Jones, 83, Liberal, died Sunday, May 18, 2003, at Southwest Medical Center in Liberal.

He was born Oct. 12, 1919, to Alexander Houston Garfield and Mary Jane (Tanner) Jones in Beaver County, Okla.

He graduated from Liberal High School in 1939.

He married Velma Chessmore Sept. 9, 1939, in Liberal. She survives.

He was a longtime Liberal resident.

He retired as a farm laborer, working for the Boles Farm west of Liberal for 45 years.

He was a member of the First Assembly of God Church in Liberal.

Survivors also include two sons, LeRoy Jones and wife, Linda, Post, Texas, and Gary Jones and wife, Debbie, Liberal; two daughters, Loretta Cunningham and husband, Verle, Topeka, and Neoma Blake and husband, Loyd, Big Lake, Texas; 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Freda Rae Jones; seven brothers, Luther, Virgil, Johnnie, Ira, Eugene, Gay and Olen Jones; and one sister, Iva Jones.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the First Assembly of God Church in Liberal, with Pastor Richard Martin presiding.

Burial will be at the Liberal Cemetery.

Friends may call until 9 p.m. today and from 9-11 a.m. Thursday, and may greet the family from 6-8 p.m. today, at Kitch-Brenneman Funeral Home in Liberal.

Memorials may be sent to the First Assembly of God Church in care of Kitch-Brenneman Funeral Home, 1212 W. Second Street, Liberal, KS 67901.

CLAUDE UNRUH

MONTEZUMA ญญ Claude Unruh, 93, former Durham resident, died Tuesday, May 20, 2003, at Bethel Home Inc., in Montezuma.

He was born Dec. 1, 1909, to Fred P. and Lena (Voth) Unruh in Marion County.

He married Della Esther Becker June 14, 1931. She died June 4, 1965.

He married Leah Nichols Jan. 28, 1966, in Copeland. She survives.

He was a member of the Morning Star congregation of the Church of God in Christ Mennonite in Tampa.

He was a farmer and a minister.

Survivors also include two sons, Gary Unruh and wife, Lila, Durham, and Willard Unruh and wife, Barbara, Hesston; four step-sons, Kenneth Nightengale and wife, Ladean, and Devern Nightengale and wife, Janette, all of Copeland, Bob Nightengale and wife, Jul, Center, Colo., and Willis Nightengale and wife, Peggy of Texas; three daughters, Alice Unruh, Moundridge, Lillian Wiebe and husband, Ransom, Durham, and Anita Schmidt aand husband, Kenneth, Montezuma; one step-daughter, Letha Loewen and husband, Gene, Corning, Calif.; one daughter-in-law, Geneva Nightengale, Brooksville, Miss.; 30 grandchildren, 65 great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.

He was also preceded in death by his parents; one son, Deloyd Nightengale; four brothers, Herbert, Harley, Paul and Walter; and three sisters, Rhoda, Esther and Marie.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Sunday at the Morning Star Congregation of the Church of God in Christ Mennonite in Tampa, with ministers Bruce Dirks, Merlin Wiebe and Donald Koehn presiding.

Burial will be at the Logan Cemetery in Tampa.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. Thursday at the Montezuma Funeral Home in Montezuma, or from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. Friday at the Morning Star Congregation at the Church of God in Christ Mennonite in Tampa.

Memorials have been established for either the Bethel Home Inc., or the Gospel Tract and Bible Society. Memorials may be mailed to Montezuma Funeral Home, P.O. Box 421, Montezuma, KS 67867.

GLADYS I. LEATHERMAN

HAYS ญญ Gladys I. Leatherman, 86, died Sunday, May 18, 2003, at the Hays Medical Center in Hays.

She was born May 10, 1917, to Fred and Anna Ratzlaff Nightengale in Protection.

She married Jacob F. Leatherman Nov. 24, 1940, in Fredonia. He survives.

She had been a resident of Scott County since 1947, moving there from Fredonia.

She was a homemaker.

Survivors also include three sons, Forrest Leatherman, Fort Lupton, Colo., Rodney Leatherman and wife, MaryAnn, Scott City, and Donald Leatherman, Liberal; one daughter, Fayetta Summervill and husband, Rodney, Hutchinson; six sisters, Viola Wiggers, Moundridge, Elsie Johnson, Scott City, Edna Frank, Copeland, Adalla Johnson, Halstead, Velma Decker, Lehigh, and Virgie Koehn, West Point, Miss.; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one granddaughter, Stephanie Leatherman; four sisters and three brothers.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the First Baptist Church in Scott City, with the Rev. Lynne Smith presiding.

Burial will follow at the Scott County Cemetery.

Friends may call until 8 p.m. today or from 9-10 a.m. Thursday at Price and Sons Funeral Home in Scott City.

Memorials may be sent to the Scott County Hospital Home Health Department in care of Price and Sons Funeral Home in Scott City

ERSEL TICE

Ersel Tice, 96, Elkhart, died Thursday, May 22, 2003, at Morton County Care Center in Elkhart.

Funeral services are pending and will be announced by Kitch-Brenneman Funeral Home in Liberal.

IMOGENE DRYER

Imogene Dryer, 89, Topeka, died Wednesday May 21, 2003, in Topeka.

Funeral arrangements are pending and will be announced by Miller Mortuary in Liberal.

ERSEL HENTON TICE

Ersel Henton Tice, 96, Elkart, died Thursday, May 22, 2003, at Morton County Care Center, Elkart.

She was born Nov. 10, 1906, to James Samuel Jackson and Minnie Belle (Williams) Henton in Lewisburg, Ky.

She was married to Galen Kuns.

She married Alva "Short" Tice July 24, 1928, in Wheeler, Texas. He died May 10, 1984.

She moved from Logan, Okla. to Liberal in 1972, and then in 1984 she moved to Booker, Texas. In 1992 she moved to Plains. She spent the last three years in Elkhart.

She was a homemaker.

She was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church in Rolla, and was a former member of the Helping Hands Extension Club in Beaver County, Okla.

Survivors include a son, Denzil "Dick" Kuns and wife, Susie, of Scottsdale, Ariz.; a daughter, Lila "Dolly" Durbin/Krey of Rolla; four grandchildren, Robert Kuns, Kay Kuns, Linda McCormick, and Kathy Regier; a step grandson, John Krey; nine great grandchilren; two step grandchildren; nine great-great grandchildren; and one step great-great grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; three brothers, Vain, Samuel and George; three sister, Pearl, Ruby and Nannie; and one grandchild, Annette Durbin.

Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Kitch-Brenneman Funeral Home Chapel in Liberal, with Dr. Danny Joiner presiding.

Burial will follow at Restlawn Cemetery in Liberal.

Friends may call from 5 to 9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. until service time on Saturday at Kitch-Brenneman Funeral Home in Liberal.

Memorial donations may be sent to the Shriners Children Hospital in care of Kitch-Brenneman Funeral Home, 1212 W. 2nd Street, Liberal, KS 67901.

IMOGENE DRYER

Imogene Dryer, 89, Topeka, died Wednesday, May 21, 2003, in Topeka.

She was born Sept. 20, 1914, to Gustav and Hannah Thorstenberg Ericson in Lindsborg.

She married Laurence Dryer on Dec. 29, 1924. He preceded her in death.

She attended the Emporia State Teachers College and taught in the Smolan area for several years. She moved to Liberal in 1946, where she worked for the SRS as a case worker, and retired as Area Director for Southwest Kansas in 1979. She is a former resident of Liberal.

She was a member of the Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, seving as organist for fifty-three years, a Board Member of SWADAF, and a founding member of the Liberal Food Bank. She attended the Highland Park Methodist Church in Topeka, and she was a member of its quilting group.

She volunteered at the Liberal Air Museum, the Baker Arts Center and the American Red Cross for many years. She was a avid quilter and a member of the Needles and Friends Quilting Guild.

Survivors include a sister, Alice Brax, Lindsborg; a son, Dan Dryer, Topeka; two daughters, Martha Guarnaschelli and husband, John, Louisville, Ky., Debby Edelen and husband, Glenn, Versailles, Ky.; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brothers, Virgil and Carl Ericson; sister, Hazel Ericson and daughter-in-law, Linda Dryer

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church in Liberal, with Rev. Andrew Wehling presiding.

Interment will be in the Liberal Cemetery.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday at the Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Memorials may be sent to the Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, Liberal, or to the Highland Park Methodist Church, Topeka, in care of Miller Mortuary Funeral Home, 908 N. Lincoln, Liberal, KS 67901.

HAROLD LEONARD (SIMP/GRINGO) SIMPSON

Harold Leonard (Simp/Gringo) Simpson, 66, Hooker, Okla., died Wednesday, May 21, 2003, at Memorial Hospital of Texas County in Guymon, Okla.

He was born May 9, 1937, to Carrol Herbert and Ruth Bryan Davis Simpson in Clayton, N.M.

He married Janet Holder May 23, 1958, in Kenton, Okla.

He attended school in Goodson, N.M. and graduated from Clayton High School in 1955. After graduation he attended Eastern New Mexico University at Portales, N.M. He worked in the oil field and then moved to Kenton, Okla where he worked road construction.

He and his wife made their home in Kenton, Okla. For the first six months of their marriage, they moved throughout Colorado and New Mexico. They settled in Clayton, N.M. until 1961 when they moved to the Hutchinson Ranch in Amstad, N.M. In 1970 they moved to Hooker, Okla. where he drove truck for Hofferber Truck Lines for 25 years. In 1995 he started driving for Mike Arnold Trucking, and remained their until his death.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Hooker, Okla.

He is survived by his wife; one brother, William Carrol and wife, Anona Simpson of Salisaw, Okla.; one sister, Mary Jo Donaldson and husband, Dennis, of Live Oak, Fla.; three sons, Joe Simpson and wife, Teresa, of Hooker, Okla., Douglas Simpson of Holbert, Okla., Clifford Simpson and wife, Julie, of St. Marys, Ga.; one daughter, Lynette Maytum and husband, Randy, of Hugoton; eight grandchildren, Jessica Nyberg, Mik Simpson, Tyler Simpson, Christopher Simpson, Haley Simpson, Joshua Thorsen, Samantha Thorsen, Brady Maytum; one great-granddaughter, Zoey Nyberg.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and brother, David Lee Simpson.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Central Time and 10 a.m. Mountain Time Tuesday at the Kenton Cemetery near Kenton, Okla.

Roberts Brothers Funeral Home in Hooker, Okla. is in charge of arrangements.
