MARIE PLATT YARNELL

HOT SPRINGS VILLAGE, Ark.ญญ Marie Platt Yarnell, 75, died Tuesday, July 8, 2003, in Hot Springs, Ark.

She was born June 14, 1928, to Warren and Pearl Platt in Wichita.

She married Robert Walker Yarnell. He preceded her in death.

She graduated in 1946 from Wichita East High School. She was a 1950 graduate of Wichita University and a college member of Kappa Delta Phi.

She was a member of AAUW and a 50 year member of Beta Sigma Phi community service sorority. She was a founding member of the Hot Springs Village Roadrunners. She was active in the Village Quilters Guild and the Village Knitters Guild, and was in the Cedar Mountain Singers. She was a longtime active member of the choir of the Presbyterian Kirk in the Pines.

Survivors include two sons, Greg Yarnell and wife, Maribeth, Wichita, and Christopher Yarnell and wife, Gay, Columbus, Ohio; one daughter, Kimberly Miller, Liberal; one sister, Barbara Gentzler, Wichita; and seven grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Wesley Platt; and one sister, June Platt.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Presbyterian Kirk In The Pines with Rev. Samuel H. Pope and Dr. C. Michael Seitz presiding.

Memorials are suggested in lieu of flowers to Presbyterian Kirk In The Pines Choir Music Fund.

Arrangements are by Cedarvale Funeral Home Hot Springs Village, AR 71909, (501) 922-6100.

BESSIE M. KERR

ULYSSES ญญ Bessie m. Kerr, 97, died Wednesday, July 9, 2003, at Western Prairie Care Home in Ulysses.

She was born May 9, 1906, to Charles E. and Effie L. (Brock) Lewis in a sod house in Northeast Grant County.

She married George W. Hill, Bill Meline and Avery B. Kerr. They all preceded her in death.

She graduated from Grant County High School. She was a teacher in Grant County and a librarian at the Grant County Library from 1931-1938. She then moved to Colorado where she operated a cafe. After two years she returned to Kansas and worked as a store clerk for Gray and Rosel in Ulysses and JCPenney Company in Garden City. She was also a nurse at Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital in Ulysses. Before her retirement in 1961, she was a clerk in Wichita at Montgomery Ward for five years.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Mesa Ariz. and the Rebecca Lodge, Eastern Star, PTA and Business Professional Club all of Ulysses.

Survivors include two nephews, Ed Lewis and wife, Joan, Ulysses and Victor Lewis, Rolla; two nieces, Dorothy Miller, Moscow, Sybil Helm, Syracuse; and numerous other nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; one son, Marshall D. Hill; four brothers, C. Otis, Richard, John and Victor Lewis; and two sisters, Lula Lewis and Ethel Miller.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the Ulysses Cemetery in Ulysses with Rev. Dennis H. Livingston presiding.

Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Garnand Funeral Home in Ulysses.

Memorials are suggested for Western Prairie Care Home in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 405 W. Grant Ulysses, KS 67880.

ROBERT A. FAUROT

SUBLETTE ญญ Robert A. Faurot, 77, died Thursday, July 10, 2003, at Satanta Long Term Care Unit in Satanta.

He was born August 29, 1925, to Harvey L. and Clara Belle (Ellis) Faurot in Erick, Okla.

He married Ida Jo Watkins Aug. 24, 1947, in Sublette. She survives.

He served in the United States Army during World War II.

He was a retired school teacher, coach and farmer. He taught at Fort Hays State University, Satanta High School, Halstead High School and Ulysses Junior High School.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Sublette, a life member and past commander of Sublette American Legion Post No. 205, V.F.W. in Dodge City, Masonic Lodge in Garden City, Wichita Consistory 32nd degree mason, Tyrian Lodge No. 246 in Garden City, Finney Chapter of O.E.S. in Garden City, Santa Fe Lodge in Sublette, Scottish Rite in Wichita, York Rite in Garden City, Median Shrine in Wichita, Fort Hays State Alumni Association, Southwest Royalty Association in Hugoton, National Education Association, Charter Member of Recreation Commission in Sublette and a 20-year member of the Sublette City Council.

Survivors also include his one son, Robert Alan Faurot and wife, Pam, Cimarron; one daughter, Barbara Phoenix, Sublette; two sisters, Nina Faurot, Satanta, and Phyllis A. Merz and husband, Richard, Satanta; and four grandchildren, Jason Roberts Phoenix, James Matthew Phoenix, Wendy Jo Faurot and Angie Jane Faurot.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother and one sister as infants; and one son-in-law, James Lester Phoenix.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Sublette with the Rev. Keith Fink presiding.

Graveside services will be conducted by Sublette American Legion Post No. 205, and a Masonic service with burial in Haskell County Cemetery in Sublette.

Friends may call funtil 8 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Haskell County Funeral Home.

A memorial has been established for the family. Memorials may be mailed to Haskell County Funeral Home Box 607, Sublette, KS, 67877.

THOMAS REED BARBER

Johnson ญญ Thomas Reed Barber, 17, died Wednesday, in Johnson.

He was born June 13, 1986, to Kelly and Deniese (Tuxhorn) Barber in Johnson.

He was a student at Stanton County High School in Johnson.

He was a member of the Kansas State High School Rodeo Association, Little Britches Rodeo Association and the Stanton County 4-H Club.

His hobbies included calf roping, steer wrestling, team roping and drawing. He was the 2003 Kansas State High School Rodeo Association Champion Steer Wrestler

Survivors include his parents; two brothers, Tye Barber and wife, Vera, Cimarron, and Dusty Barber, all of Johnson; grandparents, Kenneth and Betty Barber, Johnson, and Dale and Dora Tuxhorn, Montezuma; three uncles, Ron Tuxhorn and wife, Gayle, Montezuma, Gary Tuxhorn and wife, Kathy, Montezuma, and Wayne Barber and wife, Sheryl, Follett, Texas; a great-grandmother, Hazel Morris, Johnson; and numerous cousins.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the First United Methodist Church in Johnson with the Rev. Glen Fogo presiding.

Burial will follow at Stanton County Cemetery in Johnson.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday at Garnand Funeral Home in Johnson.

Family suggests memorials to the Reed Barber Memorial Scholarship Fund through the Kansas State High School Rodeo Association in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 605 North Avenue, Johnson, Kansas, 67855.

RICHARD POWELL

Dr. Richard "Dick" Powell, 52, died Tuesday, July 8, 2003, in Denver, Colo., at his home.

He was born June 4, 1951, to Robert and Verna Powell-Larsen in McCook, Neb.

He married Heather Powell.

He graduated in 1969 from Liberal High School. He received a Masters Degree from West Texas University in Canyon, Tex. He completed his Doctorate Degree from Indiana University.

He was a professor at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Tex., and the University of Denver.

Survivors include his wife; a sister, Susan Powell-Robinson; and two daughters, Stacie Powell and Corey Coldiron.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

A private family service will be held at Rose Hill Cemetery in Stratton, Neb.

A teacher education scholarship fund has been established at Texas Tech University in his memory.

DIANA M. DAVIS

(ULYSSES) - Diana M. Davis, 56, died Wednesday at Western Prairie Care Home in Ulysses.

She was born November 9, 1946, to Joseph and Mary (Nash) Shea in Jackson County, Mo.

She was a dietary aide at Western Prairie Care Home for eighteen years.

Survivors include a son, Troy Davis; a brother, Pete Legan, Ulysses; two sisters, Debbie Rubin, West Bolton, Vt., Pam Merril, Lawrence; and friend, Marvin Rains, Ulysses.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and step-father, George David Legan.

Graveside services will be Saturday at Ulysses Cemetery in Ulysses with Delbert Whaley presiding.

Friends may call on Friday from 2 until 8 p.m. at Garnand Funeral Home in Ulysses.

Memorials are suggested to Diana M. Davis Memorial Fund in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 405 W. Grant, Ulysses, KS 67880.

ABLE CUELLAR

(Dodge City) - Able Cuellar died at birth Wednesday in Dodge City.

He was the son of Antonio Cuellar and Josie Beltran.

He is survived by his parents and grandmother Lupe Beltran, Ulysses.

Graveside service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Ulysses Cemetery in Ulysses with Rev. Jim Dieker presiding.

Friends may call from 2 until 8 p.m. Friday at Garnand Funeral Home in Ulysses.

Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 405 W. Grant, Ulysses, KS 67880.

VICTOR G. HUDDLESTON

Victor "Vic" G. Huddleston, 55, died Sunday, July 20, 2003, at his home in Liberal.

He was born Jan. 11, 1948, to Paul V. and Stella M. Wagers Huddleston in Ponca City, Okla.

He married Carolyn L. Fraps March 10, 1984, in Liberal. She survives.

He graduated from Ponca City High School in 1966. He received his bachelors degree in Psychology, with speciality in Chemical Dependency Treatment from the Marymount College in Salina in 1980.

His hobbies included gardening, traveling, fishing, camping and woodworking.

He moved to Liberal in 1981 and worked for SKADAF from 1981-1984. In 1984 he opened the agency Family Alcohol & Drug Services, where he practiced until the present.

Survivors also include his parents; one son, Kevin Huddleston and wife, Susanne, Ponca City, Okla.

He was preceded in death by one daughter.

There will be no service. Miller Mortuary in Liberal is in charge of arrangements.
