RUTH ALYCE LOCKWOOD SMITH

Ruth Alyce Lockwood Smith, 93, died Thursday, July 24, 2003, in Pasedena, Calif.

She was born April 15, 1910, in Rockdale, Texas.

She married Harold A. Smith. He preceded her in death.

She then married Arthur T. McDonald. He also preceded her in death.

She married Thomas J. Smith Jr. He survives.

She graduated from the University of Texas-Austin in 1929 and was a member of the Chi Omega Sorority.

While living in Pasadena, she was active in the Little Garden Club of Pasadena for 50 years, Altadena Guild of the Huntington Hospital President in 1950, College Women's Club President in 1947 and 1948 and a member of the Valley Hunt Club.

Other survivors include one step-son, Thomas E. Smith, Montecito, Calif; one step-grandson Micheal J. Smith and wife, Mary Ann; two step-grandchildren, Sean Michael and Cinnia Alyce, all of Pasedena, Calif; one niece Jean Sherrill of Tallahassee, Fla.; one step-niece Nancy Smith Allen and husband, Ray, Liberal and one step-nephew, John T. Smith and wife, Sue, Liberal.

Graveside services will be at Liberal Cemetery at a later date.

Memorials are suggested in lieu of flowers to the Huntington Memorial Hospital, Pasadena, Calif.

ROBERT LEE HARTMAN

ULYSSES ญญ Robert Lee Hartman, 63, died Tuesday, July 29, 2003, at his home in Ulysses.

He was born Aug. 31, 1939, to Lewis William and Viola May (Trimble) Hartman in Gothenburb, Neb.

He married Norma Essex July 3, 1971, in Cozad, Neb. She survives.

He served in the United States Navy. He worked for the Grant County Road and Bridge as a Heavy Equipment Operator.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Ulysses.

Other survivors include one son, Jamin Ray Hartman and wife, Anissa, Poplarville, Miss.; two daughters, Dayna Lee Folger and husband, David, Johnson City and Bobbi Jo Hickok and husband, Bill, Ulysses; one brother, Donald Hartman and wife, Charlotte, Norton; three sisters, Vaneta McCreary and husband, Carroll, Richmond, Va., Bonnie Black and husband, Archie, Cozad, Neb. and Joan Schweitzer, Bossier City, La.; nine grandchildren and numerous of other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the First Baptist Church in Ulysses with the Pastors Barry Duke and Melvin Essex presiding.

Burial will be at Ulysses Cemetery in Ulysses.

Memorials are suggested to the First Baptist Church in Ulysses or Hope Lodge in Kansas City, Mo. in care of Grant County Funeral Home 218 S. Main Ulysses, KS 67880.

MARY WYATT

Mary Wyatt, 78, died Thursday July 31, 2003, at Southwest Medical Center in Liberal.

Funeral services are pending and will be announced by Kitch-Brenneman Funeral Home in Liberal.

BETTY L. WEATHERBY

Betty L. Weatherby, 74, Liberal, died Thursday, July 31, 2003, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.

She was born Sept. 15, 1928, to Ben and Ida McCurdy Jines in Perryton, Texas.

She married Wade Weatherby June 26, 1949, in Liberal. He died Nov. 27, 2002.

She moved to Liberal in 1960 and was a dispatcher at the Sands Motel; she later worked at the Liberal Inn. She and her husband sold Salad Master for many years. She received the Top Sales Person of the year award.

Survivors include one daughter, Bonita Starks and husband, Ron, Nickerson; her mother, Wichita; one brother, Sherman Jines, Wichita; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by her father and son, Leon Weatherby.

Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Restlawn Memorial Gardens in Liberal with the Rev. Rex Petty presiding.

Friends may call from 1 until 8 p.m. today at Miller Mortuary in Liberal.

MARGRET UNRUH

COPELAND -- Margret Unruh, 88, Copeland, died Friday, Aug. 1, 2003, at her home in Copeland.

She was born Sept. 2, 1914, to Roy and Margret (Martin) Potter in Herington.

She married Clyde Unruh May 7, 1936, in Colby. He died Sept. 6, 1991.

She moved from Garden City to Copeland in 1932. She began her teaching career in the one-room school, East Banner, north of Copeland. Most of her teaching career was in Copeland Grade School.

After her retirement she wrote three books of Family history and Life in Southwest Kansas.

Her hobbies included quilting, crocheting and gardening.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Friday Afternoon Club and Colusa EHU, all of Copeland, and a member of the Dodge City Retired Teachers Association.

Survivors include four sons, Robert Ross Unruh and wife, Rita, Garden City, Denton Unruh and wife, Joyce, Garden City, Roger Unruh and wife, Donna, St. Joseph, Mo., and Danny Unruh, Calhan, Colo.; six daughters, Loretta Hull and husband, Jim, Augusta, Carol Berry, Olathe, Glenda Vogel and husband, Ken, Hutchinson, Adele Koehn and husband, Denny, Galva, Martha Bell and husband, Dennis, Dodge City and Susan Williams and husband, Orville, Montezuma; 33 grandchildren; and 38 great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; two sons, Jon Bruce Unruh and Phil Unruh; three brothers, Joe, Arnold and Mearl Potter; and one sister, Pauline Smerker.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church in Copeland with the Rev. Warren Cico presiding.

Burial will be at Copeland Cemetery in Copeland.

Friends may call from 2 until 8 p.m. today at Montezuma Funeral Home in Montezuma.

Memorials are suggested to the United Methodist Church, Copeland ,or the United Methodist Mexican American Ministries, Garden City in care of Montezuma Funeral Home, Box 421, Montezuma, KS 67867.

ALICE JESSIE SCHEFERKORT

ULYSSES -- Alice Jessie Scheferkort, 66, Ulysses, died Wednesday, July 30, 2003, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus in Wichita.

She was born March 1, 1937, to David Henry and Annie Lavera (Bair) Mohr in Larned.

She married Bill Scheferkort Jan. 15, 1960, in Larned. He died in 1988.

She was a cook at Grant County Feeders in Ulysses before she retired. She attended College Street Baptist Church in Ulysses.

Her hobbies included quilting, embroidering and collecting cook books.

Survivors include one son, Matthew Scheferkort, Ulysses; one daughter, Sandy Olson, Scott City; three brothers, Wesley Mohr and David Mohr, both of Hutchinson and Kenneth Mohr, Bluffton, S.C.; two sisters, Erma Jean Conley and Arletta Detherage, both of Great Bend; two grandchildren and numerous nephews and nieces.

She was also preceded in death by her parents and three daughters, Linda, Patty and Donna.

Graveside services and burial will be at 1 p.m. Monday at the Stanton County Cemetery in Johnson with the Rev. Sam Bynum presiding.

Friends may call from 2 until 8 p.m. today at Garnand Funeral Home in Ulysses.

Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association or the American Diabetes Association in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 405 W. Grant, Ulysses, KS 67880.

PAUL V. FANKHAUSER

HUGOTON -- Paul V. Fankhauser, 86, Hugoton, died Sunday, Aug. 3, 2003, at the Pioneer Manor Nursing Home in Hugoton.

He was born April 12, 1917, to Peter and Katie (Sauder) Fankhauser in Madison.

He married Cynthia Perkins March 31, 1945, in Denver, Colo. She survives.

He served in the United States Army during World War II. He owned and operated the Toggery in Hugoton for 37 years. He worked for Southwest Savings & Loan Bank in Hugoton for several years.

His hobbies included travel and golf.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church, Rotary Club, Masonic Lodge, past president of the Chamber of Commerce and Rotary Club, all of Hugoton.

Other survivors include one daughter, Rev. Cynda Witten and husband, Rev. Larry, Colorado Springs, Colo.; two brothers, Dale Fankhauser and wife, Nell, Anthony, and Willis Fankhauser and wife, Helen, Greenvalley, Ariz.; two sisters, Katherine Brooks and husband, Wayne, San Antonio, Texas, and Geraldine Beyer and husband, Clarence, Phoenix, Ariz.; and numerous other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Clarence, Arnold, Roy, Orville and Bob Fankhauser; and one sister, Edna Frieden.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church in Hugoton with the Rev. Greg Lindenberger presiding.

Military and masonic graveside services will be at Hugoton Cemetery in Hugoton.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. today at Paul's Funeral Home in Hugoton.

W.W. "BILL" WEYBRIGHT

W.W. "Bill" Weybright, 96, died Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2003, at Exempla Colorado Lutheran Home, Arvada, Colo.

He was born Oct. 9, 1906, to Amos R. and Emma E. Weybright in Douglas County.

He married Grace Evans in 1935, in Stratton, Colo. She died June 12, 1992.

He moved to Liberal in 1946 from Kansas City, Mo. He owned and operated the Southwest Block and Aggregate Company in Liberal for many years. He later bought the Gulf Oil bulk service in Liberal. He also bought sevice stations in Liberal, Hugoton, Syracuse, Tyrone, Okla. and Guymon Okla. He retired in 1980.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Liberal.

He is survived by one son, Douglas Weybright and wife, Mona, Arvada, Colo.; one sister, Mildred Allison, Tulsa, Okla.; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by his parents and four sisters.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church in Liberal with the Rev. Stephen Saville presiding.

Burial will be at Liberal Cemetery.

Friends may call from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. Friday at Miller Mortuary. The family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday.

Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society in care of Miller Mortuary.
