JOAN M. REED

COPELAND -- Joan M. Reed, 76, died Monday, Oct. 13, 2003 at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.

She was born to Llyod and Grace (Long) Ewing, August 14, 1927, in Hobart, Okla.

She married John Robert Reed, December 26, 1951, in Manhattan. He died August 4, 1997.

She graduated from high school in in Manhattan.

She was a homemaker and enjoyed caring for her family.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Copeland.

She was a member of K-State Alumni, KSU President's club and a past member of the ATOMERA Club in Copeland.

She enjoyed sports. She was a K-State football and Cubs fan.

Survivors include one son, Robert L. Reed, Copeland; one daughter; Marianne Tyler and husband, Eric, Copeland; two brothers, David Ewing, Topeka, Al Ewing and wife, Nobuko, San Diego, Calif; one sister, Marceline Ruediger, Topeka, and relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, one brother, John Ewing; and one sister; Margery Ewing.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, at the United Methodist Church in Copeland with the Pastor Warren Cico presiding.

Burial will be at the Copeland Cemetery in Copeland.

Friends may call Haskell County Funeral Home in Sublette until 8 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. on Wednesday.

Memorials are suggested to the Copeland Cemetery Arbor Fund in Copeland and they may be left at Dunham Drilling in Copeland or mailed to Haskell County Funeral Home, P.O. Box 607, Sublette, KS 67877.

SHAWN THOMAS CRAWFORD

FLORISSANT, Colo. -- Shawn Thomas Crawford, 30, died October 11, 2003 at his home in Florissant, Colo.

He was born Feb. 13, 1973 to Donald R. Crawford and Karen (Bollinger) Scott in Liberal.

He married Valerie Woodward on April 9, 1993 in Liberal. She survives.

He was in the U.S. Army for three years.

He was a welder.

Other survivors include, two sons; Clayson Thomas and Seth Thomas Crawford; two daughters, Courtney Cherie and Shaley Nichole Crawford all of Florissant, Colo; his parents, one step-father, Jerry Scott, Elkhart, his mother-in-law, Vriginia Woodward, Liberal; his grandparents, Tom and Naomi Bollinger, Florissant, Colo., Ezra and Lillian Scott, Turpin, Okla. Tommy and Alice Crawford, Panhandle, Texas, Ted and Gerry Parish, Dolan Springs, Ariz.; onebrother, Jared Trevor Scott, Wichita; one sister, Summer Crawford, Phoenix, Ariz. and many other family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father-in-law, R.C. Woodward.

In lieu of flowers, Memorials are suggested to Master's Plan 501 (c) 3 Foundation, 16015 North 66th Street, Scottsdale, AZ 85254.

DR. JAMES R. GROTE

Dr. James R. Grote, 58, died Tuesday, October 14, 2003, at his residence in Liberal.

He was born March 13, 1945, to Henry and Hilda (Roeder) Grote in Hays.

He married Linda Stephens June 9, 1972, in Angelus. She survives.

He graduated in 1963 from Phillipsburg High School in Phillipsburg and attended Kansas University and graduated in 1967. He earned his Masters degree from Kansas State University in 1974, his PhD from Kansas State University in 1979 and his post Doctorate work from Harvard University in 1992.

He was a member of the St. Anthony Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Rotary International and Chamber of Commerce, all of Liberal.

Other survivors include one son, Curtis Grote, Emporia; and one daughter, Stephanie Grote, Liberal.

Rosary and Vigil service will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Liberal.

Funeral mass will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Seward County Community College Gymnasium with the Father Patrick Keyes presiding.

Cremation will follow the service and there will be a private burial of the cremains.

Friends may call from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Thursday at Kitch-Brenneman Funeral Home in Liberal.

Memorials are suggested in lieu of flowers and plants to Seward County Community College Development Foundation or St. Anthony Catholic Church Building Fund in care of Kitch-Brenneman Funeral Home, 1212 West Second Street, Liberal, KS 67901.

CLARENCE RAYMOND BOOR

Clarence Raymond Boor, 82, died Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2003, at Wheatridge Park Care Center in Liberal.

He was born July 15, 1921, to John J. and Catherine (Trommeter) Boor in Loeville.

He married Martha Angela Thummel Sept. 8, 1943, in Oberlin. She survives.

He worked as a meat sales represenative for 28 years for Cudahy. He was owner and operator of motels in Hays and Halstead from 1972 until 1977. He returned to Liberal in 1977 and worked as a security guard at Beech Aircraft until 1983.

He was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church and the Elks Lodge #1947, both of Liberal.

Other survivors include one son, Raymond Boor, Auburn, Wash.; two daughters, Linda Kerns, Liberal, and Claretta Lewis, Borger, Texas; two brothers, Dennis Boor and Ralph Boor, both of Salina; six sisters, Mary Weber, Salina, Irene Heulsman, Oakley, Ethel Teach, Salina, Deloris Davis, Rose Barber, Salina, Leona Weir, Salina; five grandchildren, Sheila Freeman, Rick Lewis, Aaron Boor, Tandy Bailey and Mike Fowler; six great-grandchildren, Nathaniel Bailey, Kyla Bailey, Christopher Lewis, Junior Lewis, Alisha Lewis and Rhandall Freeman.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Arnold.

Rosary will be at 7 p.m. Friday and Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Saturday both at St. Anthony Catholic Church with the Father Brian Gilles presiding.

Burial will follow at Restlawn Cemetery in Liberal.

Friends may visit from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. at Kitch-Brenneman Funeral Home.

HOWARD "HOWIE" HOLMES

Howard "Howie" Holmes, 68, died Oct. 13, 2003, at Southwest Medical Center in Liberal.

He was born May 19, 1935, to Claude William and Ida (Barrows) Holmes in Liberal.

He married Ernestine Good July 14, 1955, in Plains. She survives.

He was a lifelong resident of the Plains area. After graduating from high school he attended Kansas State University and then Taylor University in Upland, Ind. He was a farmer and owner of Pick Your Own orchard located south of Plains.

He was a member of Plains United Methodist Church and the Plains Lions Club.

His hobbies included reading and learning new methods and developments.

Other survivors include four sons, Roger Holmes and wife, Wendy, Plains, Merlin Holmes and wife, Zoe Ann, Monument, Colo., Stuart Holmes and wife, Carolyn, Hillsboro, and Will Holmes and wife, Carole, Upland, Ind.; one daughter, Janelle Moore and husband, Mark, Wichita; five sisters, Ruth Kittle, Augusta, Lila Parks, Holyrood, Joyce Holmes, Wichita, Lois Packard, Plains, and Alice Sinclair, Cimarron; 17 grandchildren, Dalton and Scott Howard Holmes, Plains, Savannah, Garrett, Weston, Karsten, and Bennet Holmes, Monument, Colo.; Nate, Thad, Lane, Gabe and Wade Holmes, Hillsboro, Shadd and Rheanna Elizabeth Holmes, Upland, Ind., Corbin, Connor and Mariah Dee Moore, Wichita.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Claude W. Holmes, Jr.

Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Plains United Methodist Church with the Reverend Terry Mayhew presiding.

Burial will follow at Plains Cemetery in Plains.

Friends may visit from 1 p.m. until 9 p.m. with the family present to receive friends from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. Sunday at Kitch-Brenneman Funeral Home in Liberal.

Memorials are suggested in lieu of flowers to Plains United Methodist Church or Taylor University in care of Kitch-Brenneman Funeral Home 1212 West Second Street, Liberal, KS 67901.

LEVI GARRETT WINDLE

Levi Garrett Windle was born Oct. 6, 1979, in Sheridan, Wyoming to Steve and Gayle (Hampton) Windle. He passed away Oct. 19, 2003, as the result of injuries sustained in an accidental fall.

He moved with his parents and brother, Brody, to Leander, Texas in 1986. He attended Texas A & M University in College Station, Texas where he soon became a true devoted "Aggie." He was pro-tradition, fiercely loyal, and greatly loved by his fellow "Aggies." Levi loved BTHOB and what it represented. He was instrumental in continuing the tradition of bonfire.

He loved to work and play on his grandparents farm near Dodge City where he visited every chance he got. He entertained and teased his cousins and family with comical stories and pranks. The farm experience led him to choose Agricultural Education as his major. He was a dynamic leader and mentor. He loved life and lived every minute to the fullest. His unique magnetism made him a role model for his fellow "Aggies," his family, and anyone who crossed his path. Levi never met a person who did not become his friend. He had a smile as wide as Texas that rarely left his face. He deeply loved his parents, brother, and extended family and often expressed it through his words, actions, and deeds.

Levi was preceded in death by his brother, Shiloh.

In addition to his parents and brother he is survived by his faithful beloved canine "Captain Gingersnap" (Cappy), grandparents Clarence and Phyliss Windle of Payson, Ariz. formerly of Dodge City and Liberal, Marvin and Floris Jean Hampton of Dodge City, many aunts, uncles, cousins, and innumerable friends. Walton Loads! Gig 'em, Whoop!

Arrangements are under the direction of Callaway-Jones Funeral Home in Bryan, Texas.

A memorial service will be held Monday, Oct. 20 at the All Faith Chapel on the A&M Campus at 2 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations to help defray medical expenses may be made to the Levi Windle Fund at any Bank of America location.
