LEE J. MCKOWN

Lee J. McKown, 82, died Dec. 8, 2003, at the Kansas Heart Hospital in Wichita.

He was born April 6, 1921, to John Lee and Winifred Marian (Hurley) McKown in Pratt.

He married Isabel Hines June 26, 1943, in Jacksonville, Ill. She survives.

He was a longtime resident of Pratt moving to Liberal in 2000. He was a conductor for the Rock Island Railroad retiring in 1981. He also managed the McKown Nursery in Pratt.

He was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church in Liberal and a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Community Concerts Board both of Pratt.

He is survived by one son, Joseph Lee McKown and wife, Linda, Byron, Calif.; one daughter, Marjorie Helen Shaw and husband, James, Liberal; one brother, Bob Ross McKown, Pasadena, Calif.; one sister, Kathleen Farmer, Pratt; four grandchildren, Deborah Ann Gill, Augusta, Ga., John Lee McKown, Colorado Springs, Colo., Jennifer Lee Girvin, Liberal, and Phillip Owen Shaw, Liberal; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Anne Winifred McKown.

Vigil and Rosary will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Kitch-Brenneman Funeral Home in Liberal.

Funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Liberal with the Father Brian Gilles presiding.

Graveside service will be at 3:45 p.m. Wednesday at Greenlawn Cemetery in Pratt with the Father Warren Stecklein presiding.

Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Kitch-Brenneman Funeral Home.

Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association in care of Kitch-Brenneman Funeral Home, 1212 W. Second, Liberal, KS 67901.

EDITH PURCELL

HUGOTON -- Edith Purcell, 84, died Dec. 8, 2003, at Morton County Hospital in Elkhart.

She was born Feb. 24, 1919, to Jay M. and Lillie Margaret (Russell) Purcell in Hooker, Okla.

She married Alfred James in 1938 in Amarillo, Texas. He died June 6, 1963.

She grew up in the Hooker area then moved to California where she lived for 26 years. She worked for an airplane factory in San Diego, Calif. during World War II. She moved back to Hugoton and lived there until she moved into the Morton County Care Center in Elkhart about two years ago. She was a homemaker and a seamstress.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church. She belonged to the American Poetry Association.

Survivors include three brothers, Jean Purcell, Borger, Texas, Hugh Purcell, Bayfield, Colo., Paul Purcell, Cross Plains, Ind.; two sisters, Dixie Brown, Moab, Utah, Gertrude Elliot, Hugoton; several nephews, nieces and numerous other relatives and friends.

She was also preceded in death by three brothers, Russell, Forrest and Elmer Purcell, one sister, Pearl Elliot; and her parents.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Paul's Funeral Home in Hugoton with the Reverend Jeff Aenk presiding.

Burial will be at the Hugoton Cemetery in Hugoton.

Friends may call Tuesday from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Paul's Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

JERRY D. SMITHERMAN

Pastor Jerry D. Smitherman, 70, died Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2003 at Seiling Hospital in Seiling, Okla.

Funeral arrangements are pending and will be announced by Miller Mortuary.

EDWARD KEITH "EDDIE" TYLER

Edward Keith "Eddie" Tyler, 79, Copeland died Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2003, at his residence.

He was born Nov. 16, 1924, to George Thadeus and Edythe Adele (Nichols) Tyler in Lockport.

He married Joann B. Hinds March 24, 1944, in Sublette. She survives.

He was a lifetime resident of Copeland.

He was a farmer and rancher.

He was a member of the Christian Church, where he served as a deacon and secretary.

Other survivors include one son, James Thadeus Tyler, Blanchard, Okla.; one daughter, Darla Kay Marrs, Montezuma; one brother, Dale Tyler and wife, Janie, Copeland; one sister, Joan Ward and husband, Leonard, Copeland; six grandchildren, Slade Tyler, Justin Tyler, Quinton Tyler, Gala Torres, Bron Marrs, Amber Campbell; two step-grandchildren, Shannon Shipley and Daphne Thomas; 12 great-grandchildren, and many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one son-in-law, Gary Marrs.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m, Friday at the Christian Church in Copeland with the Pastors Bruce Titus and Walter Birney presiding.

Burial will be at Copeland Cemetery in Copeland.

Friends may call Montezuma Funeral home in Montezuma until 8 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. Thursday.

Memorials are suggested to the Copeland Christian Church or Hospice Of The Prairie in care of Dunham Drilling in Copeland or Montezuma Funeral Home, P.O. Box 421, Montezuma, KS 67867.

R. DALE POMEROY

R. Dale Pomeroy, 88, died Dec. 11, 2003, at Wheatridge Park Care Center.

Funeral services are pending and will be announced by Kitch-Brenneman Funeral Home in Liberal.

MARGARET KATHERINE RICKARD

Johnson -- Margaret Katherine Rickard, 88, died Dec. 7, 2003, in Johnson.

She was born Sept. 28, 1915, to Ezra and Florence (Carhart) Bauman in Concepcion, Chile, South America.

She married C. Harold Rickard Aug. 28, 1941, in Fort Morgan, Colo. He survives.

She was a missionary in Japan for 31 years through the General Board of Global Ministries of the United Methodist Church.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Golden, Colo., United Methodist Women, Fellowship of Reconciliation, and the Peace with Justice Committee of the Rocky Mountain Conference of the United Methodist Church.

Other survivors include one son, Dr. Robert Carlton Rickard and wife, Sharon, Moore, Okla.; four daughters, Katherine Lorrain Walker and husband, John, Bonner Springs, Jean Sue Tomson and husband, Moran, Johnson, Maurine Lee Weaver and husband, Ross, Farmington, N.H., and Louise Ann Rickard and husband, Matthew, Lincoln, Vermont; one brother, David Bauman, Lorain, Ohio; 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Melvin, Victor and John Bauman.

Memorial services will be at a later date in Golden, Colo.

Memorials are suggested to the Heifer International, Church World Service, or to the Fellowship of Reconciliation in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 605 W. North Ave. Johnson, KS 67855.

FLORA BELLE ALLEN

Flora Belle Allen, 92, died Dec. 11, 2003, at Southwest Medical Center in Liberal.

Memorial services are pending and will be announced for a later date.

R. DALE POMEROY

R. Dale Pomeroy, 88, died Dec. 11, 2003, at Wheatridge Park Care Center in Liberal.

He was born Feb. 11, 1915, to Roy L. and Grace L. (Bohl) Pomeroy in Elk City.

He married Ruth Rinehart Dec. 26, 1936, in Wichita. She survives.

He graduated from Hugoton High School and attended Southwestern College in Winfield and received his Masters degree from Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill. He had been a longtime Liberal resident moving to Liberal in 1954. He served as principle at Hugoton Grade School for three years and had also served as a principal for Copeland High School and Kismet Rural High School for several years. In 1948, he was hired as General Manager for Tradewind Industries. In 1951, he started Pomeroy Equipment Sales selling municipal, governmental, industrial and agricultural equipment. In 1954, he branched into the irrigation field where he was responsible for many of the first irrigation wells of Southwest Kansas and the Oklahoma and Texas Panhandle. He served as the first president of the Western Kansas Manufactures and directed the first traveling caravan display which is now known as the 3 I Show. He was director and vice president of the Kansas Manufactures Association and was director and vice president of the Kansas Chamber of Commerce.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Liberal. He served for many years on the Mexican American Ministry Board and member of the Masonic Lodge of Plains.

His hobbies included listening to music and singing.

Other survivors include two sons, Douglas Pomeroy and wife, Polly, Nashville, Tenn. and Brian Pomeroy, Garden City; two daughters, Raneta Schreiner and husband, Rolfe, Santa Cruz, Calif. and Renee Pomeroy, Phoenix, Ariz.; two daughter-in-laws, Irene Senior-Pomeroy and Daw Pomeroy; one sister, Doris L. Morris, Hugoton; 10 grandchildren, Brandon Pomeroy, Roxanne Kasper, Alison Janssen, Marcus Pomeroy, Courtney Pomeroy, Emilia Boer, Sage Schreiner, Sierra Schreiner, Brandy Hancock and Kenneth Senior.

He was preceded in death by two sons, Dennis and Barry Pomeroy and one step-brother, Oliver Bell.

Memorial services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church with the Reverend Ken Hathaway presiding.

Memorials are suggested in lieu of flowers to the United Methodist Youthville or donors choice in care of Kitch-Brenneman Funeral Home, 1212 W. Second, Liberal, KS 67901.

LEONARD EUGENE MYERS

SUBLETTE -- Leonard Eugene Myers, 55, died Dec. 11, 2003, at his rural home in Sublette.

He was born Aug. 13, 1948, to Henry D. and Violet M. (Phillips) Myers in Wray, Colo.

He served his country in the United States Navy. He was a feed truck driver for the former Old Santa Fe Feeders in rural Sublette, since the early 1970's.

He was a member of A.A.R.P.

Survivors include his mother; Wray, Colo.; one brother, Doug Myers, Wray, Colo.; three sisters, Peg Jensen, Wray, Colo., Tammy Jo DeLara, Wray, Colo., and Jan Rasmussen, Hays.

He was preceded in death by his father and one son, Jason Eugene Myers.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. at the Christian Church in Sublette with the Minister David Erwin presiding.

Burial will be at 4 p.m. at the Beulah Cemetery in Colby.

Haskell County Funeral Home in Sublette is in charge of arrangements.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday and from 2 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
