LENA B. JOHNSON

FOWLER -- Lena B. Johnson, 99, died Jan. 1, 2004, at the Minneola Nursing Home in Minneola.

She was born Aug. 12, 1904, to Michael and Catherine Bugner Heimerman in Colwich.

She married Egbert P. Johnson Nov. 20, 1924, in Lincoln County Kentucky. He died April 27, 1970.

She moved to Fowler in 1922 where she began her career as a cook and restaurant owner and operator until her retirement in 1970. She started the Fowler High School lunch program in 1944 and was with the program for more than 17 years. She moved from Fowler to Hutchinson in 1988 to live with her son.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Hutchinson and the Rebekah Lodge of Fowler.

Survivors include several nieces and nephews; and her caregiver, Phyllis Bradley, Dodge City.

She was also preceded in death by one son, Bill J. Johnson; four brothers, Seb, Leo, Henry and Alfred Heimerman; and two sisters, Bertha Orth and Matilda Goebel.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Fowler United Methodist Church with the Reverend Dick Robbins presiding.

Friends may call until 5 p.m. Friday at Fidler-Orme Mortuary in Meade.

Burial will be in the Fowler Cemetery in Folwer.

Memorials are suggested to Minneola Nursing Home or Hospice of the Prairie both in care of the mortuary.

VILA RUTH RAY

Johnson -- Vila Ruth Ray, 89, died Dec. 31, 2002 at the Stanton County Long Term Care Unit in Johnson.

She was born July 26, 1914, to James Wesley and Ermine (Bradley) Dimmitt in Rice County.

She married Verle E. Ruth in Johnson. He died March 1972. She then married Daniel S. Ray Aug. 10, 1987 He died March 1994.

She attended a country school south east of the Plymell community in Finney County. She graduated from Stanton County High School in 1933. She graduated from Venus Academy of Beauty with a degree in Cosmetology.

She worked as a cosmetologist in Greensburg.

She was a member of the Johnson United Methodist Church. She was a Sunday School teacher. She was an active member of the United Methodist Women, "Come Join Us, " Sunday School Class, Merry Maid's Social Club, Cosmos Club, Helluo Librorum Club, and Stanton County 4-H Club leader.

Survivors include, three sons David Ruth and wife, Pat, Sparks, Nev., Darrel Ruth and wife, Marylin, Johnson, Donald Ruth and Katy, Pagosa Springs, Colo.; one brother, James Dimmitt, Johnson; one sister, Nina Seyb, Pretty Prairie; 10 grandhchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Victor Dimmit.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the First United Methodist Church in Johnson with the Reverend Glenn Fogo presiding.

Burial will be at the Stanton County Cemetery in Johnson.

Friends may call Garnand Funeral Home in Johnson on Monday from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m.

Memorials are suggested to First United Methodist Church or the Stanton County Long Term Care Unit in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 605 W. North Ave., Johnson, KS 67855.

PHYLLIS KAY GREWELL

HUGOTON -- Phyllis Kay Grewell, 64, died Friday, January 2, 2004 at her residence.

She was born Jan. 26, 1939 to Ross E. and Bertha Jane (Wilson) Taylor in Hugoton.

She married Paul Greewell June 7, 1958 in Hugoton. He survives.

She was a homemaker. She was a member of Women of Love and Faith Bible Study.

Other survivors include Paul Grewell and wife, Toni, Hugoton; two daughters, Diana Greewell George and husband, David, Derby, Paula Grewell Shuck and husband, Clifford, Hugoton; one brother, Lynn Taylor and wife, Betty, Mission, Texas; two sisters, Leila Pate, Hugoton, Evelyn Garlarneau and husband, Harry, Roseville, Calif.; seven grandchildren, Grant George, Slade Shuck, Ross Grewell, Gina George, Sheena Shuck, Angelica Shuck and Jacquelynn Grewell; and her Mother-in-law, Vera Grewell, Hugoton.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one daughter, Renee Grewell, one brother, Everett Taylor an sister, Dorothy Sykes.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Assembly of God Church in Hugoton with the Reverend Robert Bailey and Pastors Keith and Pam Peachey presiding.

Burial will be at the Hugoton Cemetery in Hugoton.

Friends may call Paul's Funeral Home in Hugoton until 8 p.m. today.

Carter NELSON PRINE

HUGOTON -- Carter Nelson Prine, 82, died Monday, Dec. 1, 2003, at Norman Vet Center in Norman, Okla.

He was born March 11, 1921, to Louis and Eunice (Willis) Prine in Halstead.

He married Bernice Evelyn Kennedy on March 30, 1945, in Colorado. She died Jan. 6, 1994.

He was a minister for many years. He was a member of First Church of God.

He was a member of the Ministerial Alliance, VETS GROUP, Hugoton and Disabled American Veterans.

Survivors include one son, Michael Prine, Oklahoma City, Okla.; two daughters, Donna Ayler and husband, Bruce, Moore, Okla. Patty Adicks, Houston, Texas, ; six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and many relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; one daughter, Judy Lynn Prine, four brothers; Donovan Prine, Dyral Prine, Lee Prine and Weldon Prine.

Memorial services will be at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at Paul's Funeral Home in Hugoton.

ANNIE HERRERA

HUGOTON -- Annie Herrera, 79, died Saturday, January 3, 2004, at Stevens County Hospital in Hugoton.

She was born July 26, 1924, to Marcelino and Frances (Barella) Romero in Dawson, N.M.

She married Carlos Herrera, Jr. June 2, 1984, in Hugoton. He died Dec. 9, 2002.

She was a cook for cafes in Hugoton.

She was a member of Saint Helen Catholic Church in Hugoton.

Survivors include three daughters, Elsie Rivera, Guymon, Okla., Mary Ann Roybal, Hooker, Okla. Vickey Cordova, Stinnett, Texas; 14 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; 16 great-great grandchildren and many relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; four brothers, Johnny Romero, Mike Romero, Ben Romero, and Marcelino Romero, Jr.

Funeral Mass was today at 10:30 a.m. at Saint Helen Catholic Church with the Father Francis Khoi Nguyen presiding.

Burial was at Hugoton Cemetery in Hugoton.

Vigil services were Sunday, Jan. 4 at 8 p.m. at Saint Helen Catholic Church.

ARCHIE E. PATRICK

SUBLETTE -- Archie E. Patrick, 62, died Sunday, January 4, 2004, at Satanta District Hospital in Satanta.

He was born May 21, 1941, to Loyd and Opal (Fuller) Patrick in Campo, Colo.

He married June Priddy June 8, 1963, in Lamar, Colo. She survives.

He was an Equipment Operator Specialist for the Kansas Department of Transportation for 23 and a half years.

He was a member of the Church of the Nazarene in Sublette.

Other survivors include two sons, Don Patrick and wife, Catherine, Tonganoxie, Lonnie Patrick and wife, Bobbie, Yukon, Okla.; two daughters, Connie McCleary and husband, Sam, Big Bow, Bonnie Harjo, Garden City; his mother, Opal Patrick, Springfield, Colo.; two brothers, Harris Patrick, Boise City, Okla., and L.E. Patrick, Sprinfield, Colo.; eight grandchildren and many relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father and one brother, Allen Patrick.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Christian Church in Sublette with the Ministers David Erwin and Joe Dunlap presiding.

Burial will be at Haskell County Cemetery in haskell.

Friends may call Haskell County Funeral Home in Sublette Tuesday from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m.

Memorials are suggested to Sublette E.M.T.'s or the Sherriff's Office in care of Haskell County Funeral Home, P.O. Box, 607, Sublette, KS 67877.

FLORA BELLE ALLEN

Flora Belle Allen, 92, died Thursday, Dec. 11, 2003, at Southwest Medical Center in Liberal.

She was born Aug. 10, 1911, in Burlingame to William E. and Mary Davis Bush.

She married William R. Allen Sept. 12, 1930. He died May 27, 1976.

She moved to Liberal in 1917.

She graduated from Liberal High School in 1928. She attended the University of Kansas.

She was the first Executive Secretary of the American Red Cross During World War II. She later became a Red Cross volunteer Home Service Chairman. She worked for the Seward County Welfare Department and the Kansas State Department of Welfare for 17 years.

She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church.

She was a charter sponsor of the "Mary Martin Chapter of the Westminster Guild" with the First Presbyterian Church. She was a 50-year member of the PEO Chapter AP. She was a lifetime member of the KU Alumni association. She was active in Girl Scouts, 4-H and she organized Brownie Troop No. 19.

Survivors include one son, John Allen and wife Carol, Spencer, Iowa; one daughter, Dr. Pam Spry and husband, Sid, Aurora, Colo.; one grandson, Chad Allen; one granddaughter, Lesley Allen Warbuten and one great -granddaughter, Kyra Allen.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, and one sister.

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church in Liberal with the Reverend Ken Hathaway presiding.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the First United Methodist Church in care of Miller Mortuary, 908 N. Lincoln, Liberal, KS 67901.
