FAYE JONES
MOSCOW -- Faye Jones, 83, died Monday, February 2, 2004, at the Stevens County Hospital in Hugoton.
She was born Oct. 24, 1920, to Charlie and Martha Askins Athey in Foard City, Texas.
She married Art Jones Dec. 11, 1937, in Crowell, Texas. He survives.
She attended school in Foard City, Texas. She moved to Stanton County in 1947, living also in Morton County where she owned the Richfield Grocery for many years. She was a cafeteria director in Goodwell, Okla. for nine years and moved to Canadian, Texas. She was a resident of Moscow for the past year.
She attended the Baptist Church.
Other survivors include three sons, Freeman Jones and wife, Jane, Liberal, Jimmy Jones and wife, Theresa, Inola, Okla., and Ross Jones and wife, Debbie, McClain, Texas; four daughters, Janice Carter and husband, Neel, Miami, Texas, Sharon Carpenter and husband, David, Pitkin, Colo., Linda Johnson and husband, Don, Canadian, Texas; Patricia Bell and husband, Travis, Sun City, Ariz. and Geneva Gidney, Crowell, Texas; 25 grandchildren, 46 great-grandchildren and seven great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers; four sisters; two grandsons, Davey Carpenter and Adam Carter; and great-grandson, Josh Barker.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Moscow Baptist Church in Moscow with the Reverend Larry Bradford presiding.
Burial will be at the Rolla Cemetery
in Rolla.
Friends may call Miller Mortuary until 8 p.m. Tuesday and from 8 -9:30 a.m. Wednesday.
Memorials are suggested to the American Diabetes Association in care of the mortuary.
HELEN L. SMITH
GARDEN CITY -- Helen L. Smith, 80, died Monday Feb. 2, 2004, at Saint Catherine Hospital in Garden City.
She was born Oct. 13, 1923, in Haviland, to Glen and Erna Mae Plunkett Hecox.
She married Alvin R. Smith April 18, 1942 in Meade. He died Oct. 4, 1963.
She was a resident of Garden City since 1994 moving from Liberal. She had been the owner and operator of both the Spudnut Shop and the Liberal Taxi Company for several years.
She was a member of the First Church of God where she served as youth director and was a past Brownie and Scout leader in Liberal.
She is survived by one son, Alvin Ross "Butch" Smith, Durango, Colo.; two daughters, Glenda May Gramling, Paragould, Ark., and Linda Lorraine Crain, Garden City; 19 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and one brother, Vern Hecox, Tyrone, Okla.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Raymond Hecox, and one sister, Vera Cargill.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday with the Reverend Randy Caddell presiding at the Price and Sons Funeral Home in Garden City .
Burial will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Liberal Cemetery.
Friends may call the Price and Sons Funeral home until 8 p.m. today.
Memorials are suggested to the Alzheimer's Association in care of Price and Sons Funeral Home in Garden City.
JOHN WESLEY STANSBERRY
John Wesley Stansberry, 92, died Monday, February 2, 2004, at the Southwest Medical Center in Liberal.
He was born November 11, 1911, to Archie and Annie Stansberry in Saddle Mountain, Okla.
He married Marceille Lowry Dec. 22, 1934, in Wichita. She survives.
He graduated from the Greenough High School in 1932.
He grew up in Oklahoma and Nevada, and lived on ranch at a young age.
He was a veteran of World War II, where he served in the United States Navy. He was also involved in the evacuation of Iwo Jima.
He worked in pipeline construction for six years in Kansas and Oklahoma. After coming to Liberal, he worked for Panhandle Eastern Pipeline Company for 30 years, working at the River Station, Stores and retired as a clerk in 1967.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church and served as president of the McArthur Sunday School Class.
He was involved as a 4-H leader of the Busy Bee Club and assisted with their horse shows for many years. He served as president of the Panhandle Pipeline Retirees. He was a charted member of the Liberal Trail Riders.
He enjoyed working with horses and fishing.
Other survivors include one son, Bruce Stansberry, and wife, Dixie, Freedom, Okla.; three daughters, Nada Stoops, Liberal, Nedra Arnett and husband, Kevin, Liberal, Shona Blakely and husband Kim, Turpin, Okla; 10 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; one sister, Rose Fraizer, Chandler, Ariz.; and one brother-in-law, Elsworth Brown, Kansas City.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the First Baptist Church with the Reverend David Bagwell presiding.
Burial will be at the Restlawn Memorial Gardens with military honors by the Fort Riley Guard.
Friends may call the Miller Mortuary until 8 p.m. Wednesday and 8 a.m. until 11 a.m. Thursday.
Memorials are suggested to the First Baptist Church in care of the Mortuary.
NORMAN EUGENE HASKINS
MEADE -- Norman Eugene Haskins, 83, died Tuesday, February 3, 2004, at Meade District Hospital in Meade.
He was born June 20, 1920, to Gerald E. and Pattie (Brown) Haskins.
He married Arlene Little June 1, 1946 in Meade. She survives.
He attended school in Meade. He later attended Dodge City Community College.
He worked for Beech Aircraft in Wichita. He then joined the United States Army serving in the Pacific Theater.
After World War II, he became a farmer and was a stockman in Meade County.
He was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Meade since childhood. He served on numerous boards and committees, and taught Sunday school and sang in the church choir.
He had been an active member of the local Veterans of Foreign Wars, serving on various committees and offices, and was a member of the Kiwanis Club of Meade.
In the last few years, he enjoyed singing with the Golden Notes, sharing meals and activities at the Beam Senior Center in Meade.
Other survivors include, two sons, David Haskins, Dodge City, DeanHaskins and wife, Dawn, Elkins, Ark.; two daughters, Dinah Mellard and husband, Ron, Meade, Judy Wood and husband Phil, Birmingham, Ala., eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Kenneth Haskins.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the First Baptist Church in Meade with the Reverend Harry Fink presiding.
Friends may call the First Baptist Church in Meade from 7 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. on Friday.
Burial will be at Graceland Cemetery
in Meade.

GLENDA JEAN ZIRGER
MEADE -- Glenda Jean Zirger, 65, died Tuesday, February 3, 2004, at her home in Meade.
She was born April 4, 1938, to Cecil and Elizabeth Katherine (Cockrall) Jennings in Benton County.
She married Dale Clinesmith April 3, 1956, in Clayton, N.M.
She then married Lowell Zirger Dec. 17, 1976, in Plains. He died April 6, 1999.
She lived in Arkansas and California before moving to Liberal and attended Liberal High School. She moved to Meade in 1959, where she worked as a waitress and as a cook.
Her hobbies included collecting dolls, attending auctions, and enjoyed being a resident of Meade and the company of her dogs.
Survivors include three sons, Kenton Clinesmith and wife, Cara Beth, Turpin, Okla., John Clinesmith and wife, Julie, Cheney, and Bill Clinesmith and wife, Stephanie, Cimarron; one duaghter, Rolisa Parnell and husband, Scott, Liberal; one sister, Carol Dickerson, Edmond, Okla.; seven grandchildren, Jonathon and Kelsey Clinesmith, Edmond, Okla., Amy, Adam and Austin Parnell, Liberal, and Morgan and Courtney Clinesmith, Cimarron.
She was also preceded in death by one sister, Sandra Jennings.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Fidler-Orme Mortuary Chapel in Meade with the Pastor Stuart Pederson presiding.
Friends may call from 9 a.m. until 7 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. until service time Saturday at the funeral home.
Burial will be at Graceland Cemetery
in Meade.
Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society or the National Pug Rescue in care of the funeral home.
VIRGIE VIOLET THOMAS
FOWLER -- Virgie Violet Thomas, 90, died Monday, February 2, 2004, at Meade District Hospital in Meade.
She was born Sept. 24, 1913, to Rosie Elgin and Martha Ann (Richardson) Bonham in Paris, Ark.
She married Cecil Everett Thomas March 16, 1936, in Gotebo, Okla. He died Oct. 10, 1988.
She was a resident of Fowler since 1943, and was a homemaker.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Fowler, having been a member of the Baptist Church during her childhood, and the Rebekah Lodge in Fowler.
Survivors include three sons, Cecil E. Thomas, Long Lane, Mo., Dale L. Thomas, Blackwell, Okla., and Harold G. Thomas, Westcliffe, Colo.; one daughter, DeLois K. Johnson, Elkhart; 13 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by one sister, Daisy Brewer; one grandson, Thomas Gene Johnson; and one great-grandduaghter, Rebecca Barnes.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church in Fowler with the Reverends Juanita Catlin and Dick Robbins presiding.
Burial will be at Fowler Cemetery
in Fowler.
