OTTO J. MEHL
Otto J. Mehl, 89, died March 21, 2004, at his residence of 1121 W. Sixth, Grand Island, Neb. He was a resident of Grand Island, Neb. for the past nine years, moving from Liberal.
Otto Mehl was born Oct. 8, 1914, near Balko in Beaver County, Okla. , a son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred S. Mehl. He attended the Balko Mennonite Church and accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as his personal Savior at the age of 17, and was later baptized at the First Christian Church in Wichita.
He attended Bethany School through his sophomore year and graduated from the Balko High School in 1933. He attended Panhandle A&M College, Goodwell, Okla. and later the Dodge City Business College, Dodge City, majoring in accounting. He worked as an accountant for Davis Electric in Dodge City and then at Beechcraft in Wichita.
On Aug. 24, 1941, he married Elda Elizabeth Egbert in Cimarron. To this union were born two sons, Earl D. and Gary R. Mehl.
In 1946, after moving to Liberal he formed a partnership with Arthur St. Clair, known as St. Clair and Mehl Concrete Contractors. Later he acquired Mr. St. Clair's interest and changed the name to Mehl Concrete Company, Inc. He sold this business in 1973 and became engaged with his son, Gary, in farming and livestock.
While in Liberal he was active in the First Baptist Church and taught Sunday School for a number of years. He attended the Evangelical Free Church during his time in Grand Island, Neb. He was a member of Gideon's International for over 45 years and served as Camp President and also served on the State Cabinet.
He was a past president of the Liberal Rotary Club, past president of the Liberal Board of Directors Youth for Christ, served on the Seward County Planning Commission, the Board of Directors of the Liberal Chamber of Commerce, and for several years on the Advisory Board of Liberal Good Samaritan Center. He served for 12 years as a member of the Seward County Commissioners. During his tenure in office, the new Southwest Medical Center, the Seward County Activity Center, the Southwest Guidance Center and the Ambulance Center were built.
Mr. Mehl was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Elda, Jan. 5, 2000. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, one sister, and one granddaughter.
He is survived by two sons and their wives: Earl and Rosemary Mehl, Brunswick, Ga. and Gary and Connie Mehl, Grand Island, Neb. Also surviving are four beloved grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, and three sisters; Louise Mann, Lydia Grey and Carrie Speakman, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the First Baptist Church in Liberal with Pastor Curt Holzworth of the Evangelical Free Church of Grand Island and Reverend David Bagwell of the First Baptist Church of Liberal presiding.
A private burial service will precede the service at the Balko Mennonite Brethren Church Cemetery
in Balko, Okla.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. at Kitch-Brenneman Funeral Home in Liberal. The family will receive friends from 6:30 until 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

NANCY LOUISE LUMLEY
Nancy Louise Lumley, 55, Tyrone, Okla. died March 20, 2004.
Born to Marvin and Clara Kreutzer Dechant in Great Bend, Dec. 18, 1948. Nancy graduated from Garden City High School in 1967. She married David Dumler in 1969, he died in 1983. She married Frank Lumley in 1989.
She is survived by her husband Frank Lumley, Tyrone, Okla. Additional survivors include her children, Steve Dumler, Mesa Ariz; Mike Dumler, Tyrone, Okla.; Gus Dumler, McKinleyville, Calif.; Randy Lumley, Olathe; Steven Lumley, Pampa, Texas; John Lumley, Garden City; Bo Lumley, Goodwell, Okla.; Peggi Franklin, Liberal; Charlie Lumley, Ada, Okla; her parents, Marvin and Clara Dechant, Ness City; brothers and sisters, Pat Reimer, Salina; Sue Bayer, Willis, Texas; Terry Dechant, Olathe; Bill Dechant, Ransom; Don Dechant, Cheney; Steve Dechant, Holcomb; Sandy Borger, Meade and Michelle Lumley, Garden City; 28 grandchildren and one great-grandchild and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a grandson, David Michael Dumler and nephew John Earl Henry.
She enjoyed gardening, birds and being surrounded by family, especially her grandchildren. She was loved by many and will be truly missed by all that knew her.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be sent to the Nancy Lumley Scholarship Fund (Tyrone School) in care of the Community Bank, Liberal or to the Miller Mortuary.
There will be a celebration of her life at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the North Blue Bonnet Park, in case of inclimate weather, the service will be conducted in the Recreation Youth Center with Father Patrick Keyes presiding.
AGNES L. HILL
PLAINS -- Agnes L. Hill, 89, died Thursday, March 11, 2004, in McPherson.
Funeral are pending and will be announced by Fidler-Orme Mortuary in Meade.
DESSIE MARIE WILSON
HUGOTON -- Dessie Marie Wilson, 96, died Monday March 15, 2004, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center -Saint Francis Campus , Wichita.
She was born March 7, 1908, to Loyal Luster and Mable Nettie (Miller) Hogan in Stevens County.
She married Fred Vincent Wilson Oct. 2, 1927, in Hugoton. He died.
She lived in Hugoton, Dodge City, and Alva, Okla. moving back to Hugoton in 1951.
She attended Emporia State and graduated from Northwest College in Alva, Okla.
She was a teacher. She taught in a rural school around Hugoton.
She was a member of Trinity Baptist Church in Hugoton.
Survivors include three daughters, Vesta M. Wilson, Hugoton, Muriel Phyllis Wilson, Hugoton, Garnet L. Mackay, Derby; two grandsons, Mark Alan MacKay and Brent Kevin MacKay; one sister, Hazel Timken and husband, Linly, Hugoton; many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one brother, Marvin Miller; two sisters, Virga Elizabeth Barton and Doris Juanita Ham.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Trinity Baptist Church in Hugoton with the Minister sMark Alan MacKay and Larry Bradford presiding.
Burial will be at Hugoton Cemetery
in Hugoton.
Friends may call from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. today until Thursday.

HESTER R. THOMAS
MONTEZUMA -- Hester Ruth Thomas, 104, died Sunday, March 21, 2004, at Bethel Home Inc. in Montezuma, where she had been a resident since Jan. 1986.
She was born Jan. 5, 1900, to W.H. and Alma Edna (Simpson) Niemeir in Fort Scott.
She married Vincent D. Thomas July 26, 1924, in Las Vegas. He died.
She was married in a double wedding with her sister, Willa Niemeir.
She taught at Fairview country school, Ingalls grade school and Montezuma grade school.
She was a homemaker, teacher and superintendent of schools at Montezuma grade school.
She was a member of United Methodist Women, American Legion Auxiliary, Montezuma Study Club, Montezuma Bridge Club, all in Montezuma, and Past Matron of Eastern Star in Ensign.
She was a member of United Methodist Church in Montezuma since Feb. 24, 1924. She taught Sunday School.
Survivors include one son, Victor V. Thomas and wife, Louise, Montezuma; one son-in-law, Carl Lover, Montezuma; 10 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and numerous other relatives.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; two daughters, Marilyn Love and Anita Burngarner; two siters, Daisy Bahling and Willa Butcher; three brothers, Ernest, Clyde and Guy Niemeir.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at United Methodist Church in Montezuma with the Rev. Gene Eshleman presiding.
Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery
in Montezuma.
Friends may call until 8 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. Wednesday at Montezuma Funeral Home in Montezuma.

IRENE M. ARMBRUSTER
MEADE -- Irene Marie Armbruster, 90, died Monday, March 22, 2004, at Meade District Hospital in Meade.
She was born April 18, 1913, to Fred and Katie (Zehr) Schurter in Alfalfa County, Okla.
She married Walter W, Armbruster Nov. 1, 1933, in Alva, Okla. He died July 18, 1996.
She was a graduate of Driftwood High School in Driftwood, Okla.
She and her husband farmed in the Burlington, Okla., area for more than 60 years.
She was a homemaker, and did volunteer work at Alfalfa County Hospital in Cherokee, Okla.
She moved to Meade in 1994.
Her hobbies included photography and cake decorating.
She was a member of Driftwood Christian Church.
Survivors include three daughters, Charlene R. Ackerman and husband, Danny, Meade, Carolee A. Whitacre and husband, Bob, La Habra, Calif., and Cecelia I. Castle and husband, Richard, Jet, Okla.; one daughter-in-law, Patricia A. Armbruster, Cherokee; one sister, Wilma Frohock and husband, Ben, Blackwell, Okla.; three sisters-in-law, Martha Schurter, Katy, Texas, Doris Armbruster, Burlington, Okla., and Lucille Schurter, Fort Scott; 11 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; one son, Charles Armbruster in 2003; three brothers; and two grandsons.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Driftwood Christian Church in Driftwood with the Rev. Rodney Rieger presiding.
Burial will be at Apostolic Christian Cemetery
in Burlington.
Friends may call from 1 p.m. until 7 p.m. Thursday at Fidler-Orme Mortuary in Meade, and from 9:30 a.m. until services Friday at Driftwood Christian Church in Driftwood.

GARRY L. STEBENS
Garry L. Stebens, 54, died Sunday, March 28, 2004, at the Medical Center in Red Oak, Texas.
He was born March 28, 1950, to Hersel Niles and Eva Opal Waybright Stebens in Guymon, Okla.
He graduated from Liberal High School in 1969. He received his EMT Certificate from the Southwest Kansas Technical School.
He married Marcia Shaw June 22, 1989, in Liberal. She survives.
He was a volunteer firefighter and worked for Ideal Warehouse in Liberal. In 1986, he began driving trucks for Yellow Freight Systems, based in Liberal, Aurora, Colo. and Irving Texas moving to Red Oak, Texas in 1997.
He was a member of the Teamsters Union and Bass Masters.
He is also survived by two sons, Roger Stebens, and wife, Betty, Jeffery Stebens, Red Oak, Texas; one daughter, Christina Stebens and husband, Fernando Trejo, Liberal; two grandchildren, Ashley Stebens and McKenzie Stebens; one brother, Ron Stebens, and wife, Sherry, Liberal; two sisters, Cindy Martz and husband, Charles, Liberal; Connie Keever and husband Bud, Bartlesville, Okla.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the Western Avenue Church of Christ with the Minister Wade Tannehill presiding.
Burial will be at the Liberal Cemetery.
