RUDY V. BINDLEY

Rudy V. Bindley, 92, died Monday, April 5, 2004, at Bethel Home Inc., in Montezuma.

She was born August 28, 1911, to John William and Evangeline Lenore (Brown) Herndon in Amy.

She married Lyle Bindley Aug. 10, 1940, in St. Francis. He died March 18, 1990.

She attended grade school in Amy. She graduated from Dighton High School in Dighton Kansas. She also graduated from Emporia State University in Emporia.

She taught 42 years at the grade school and was librarian for five years in Montezuma.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church ant the United Methodist Women in Montezuma.

Her hobbies included Big League Baseball, watching television, reading, fishing, visiting with friends, music, dancing and pets. She also enjoyed doing crossword, word puzzles and reading the daily paper. She had a special talent for singing and writing.

She is survived by four sisters-in-law, Mildred Bindley, Montezuma, Edna English, Cimarron, Elise Beery, Hays, and Eleanor Bindley, Gypsun, Colo.; many nephews and nieces; and many friends.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Walter Herndon and an infant brother; five sisters, Dr. Geneva Herndon, Ruth Sinclair, May Beth Herndon, Lucille Breitenbach and an infant sister.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church in Montezuma with the Reverend Gene Eshleman presiding.

Memorials are suggested to the United Methodist Church in Montezuma in care of Montezuma Funeral Home, P.O. Box 421, Montezuma, KS 67867.

Friends may call the funeral home from noon until 8 p.m. on Wednesday.

ELDRED N. SANTALA

Eldred N. Santala, 78, died Monday, April 5, 2004, at Southeast Colorado Long Term Care in Springfield, Colo. where he had been a resident.

He was born to Herman Lander and Edith Barbara (Headrick) Santala March 30, 1926, in Seward County.

He married E. Marie Moody January 27, 1945, in Sublette. She survives.

He was a farmer and rancher. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Satanta. He was a 32nd degree mason and had just received a 50 year masonic award. He was a member of the masonic lodge A.F. and A.M. , Hugoton.

He enjoyed the many vacation trips he and his wife went on in many parts of the country. He enjoyed going to the D&D Cafe for coffee and seeing his many friends.

Other survivors include three sons, Steven Santala and wife, Lynne, Satanta, Michael Santala and wife, Sally, Flagler, Colo., Darrel Santala and wife, Connie, Marysville, Wash; one daughter, Charlotte Thomas and husband, Marvin, Salt Lake City, Utah; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one brother, Duane Santala, Ness City; two sisters, Helen Pickens, Denver, Colo., Alma Zizza, Satanta; and many relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Satanta with the Reverend Jeff Miller and Ray Tweed presiding.

Masonic graveside services will be at Dudley Township Cemetery in Satanta.

Friends may call Haskell County Funeral Home in Sublette from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. Wednesday through Friday.

ESTHER MAE BAUERSFIELD

Esther Mae Bauersfield, 86, died Monday, April 5, 2004, in Grandlake, Colo.

Bauersfield was a former resident of Liberal.

Memorial services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Chrysostom, located at13151 W.28th in Golden, Colo.

Inurnment will be at Liberal Memorial Cemetery.

THERESA HELEN KELLER

ULYSSES -- Theresa Helen Keller, 74, died Tuesday, April 6, 2004, at Good Samaritan Center in Lyons.

She was born Sept. 12, 1929, to Theodore and Theresa (Groome) French.

She married Floyd A. Keller Oct. 9, 1946 in Wichita. He died March 26, 1983.

She had been a resident of Ulysses since 1952. She moved to Alva, Okla. in 1997 and to Lyons in 2003.

She was a bookkeeper for Floyd's Garage, co-owned and operated a dress shop called The Hutch, and was an Insurance Clerk at the Ulysses Family Physicians in Ulysses.

She was a member of Shelton Memorial Christina Church, American Legion Women's Auxiliary, Rebekah Lodge No. 635, Business Professionals of America, Ulysses Arts Association and the America Needle Point Guild.

Survivors include one son Kenneth D. Keller and wife, Mary, Ulysses; one daughter Vickie Lynn Frank and husband, Thomas, Turon; five grandchildren, Kevin Keller, Heather Frank, Shari Keller, Debra Evans and Janelle Johnson; two great-grandchildren, Jaden and Trent Evans; ; three brothers, Marvin French, Eureka, Theodore French, Jonesboro, Ga., and Willard French, Beaumont; four sisters, Dorothy Uhl, Lacrosse, Harriet Shumard, Eureka, Margaret Love, Eureka, Eva Jean Boswell, Wichita.

She was preceded in death by one son, George Paul Keller; one grandson, Brian Thomas Frank; two brothers, Herbert French and Lyle French.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Garnand Funeral Home Chapel in Ulysses with the Reverend Bill Harrold and Rebekah Lodge No. 635 presiding.

Burial will follow at the Ulysses Cemetery in Ulysses.

Friends may call the Garnand Funeral Home in Ulysses until 8 p.m. today.

Memorials are suggested to the American Legion Women's Auxiliary in Ulysses or to Angels Wing at Good Samaritan Center in Lyons in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 405 W. Grant, Ulysses 67880.

IRIS M. SOUTHERN

Iris M. Southern, 90, died April 7, 2004, at the Good Samaritan Center in Liberal.

Iris was born Feb. 20, 1914, in Texas County, Okla. near Baker, the daughter of Abner G. and Rose M. Kramer Mendenhall.

She was united in marriage to Chester Southern. Mr. Southern passed away in July, 1989.

Iris was a homemaker while raising her family near Baker, Okla. She moved to Liberal in 1953. She worked at Black's Drug Store, Johnson's Drug Store, Audrey's Dress Shop and Alco.

Survivors include her son, Leon Southern and his wife, Cherle, Liberal; three daughters, Juanita Grant and husband, Chet, Hooker, Okla. , Vera Browne and husband, Jerry, Liberal, Sonia Davis and husband , Bob, Richfield; seven grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three step-great grandchildren; one great -great grandchild.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 10, 2004, at Hooker Cemetery in Hooker, Okla. with the Pastor Jim Mather of the First Church of Nazarene in Liberal and the Rev. Merilee Berry of the First Christian Church in Hooker, Okla. presiding. Arrangements directed by Roberts Brothers funeral Home in Hooker, Okla.

Memorials are suggested by the Liberal Good Samaritan Center of the First Christian Church in Hooker, Okla. or the First Church of the Nazarene in Liberal in care of Roberts Brothers Funeral Home, P.O. Box 745, Hooker, Okla. 73945.

ALICE M. GREEN

Alice M. Green, 97, Liberal, died Thursday, April 8, at Southwest Medical Center in Liberal.

She was born March 22, 1907, to E.S. and Dora M. Crowe James in Garden City.

She married Joe Meeler in 1926. She then married L.C. "Clay" Byerley April 17, 1945, in Liberal. He died July 8, 1987. She later married Maurice Green June 22, 1988, in Liberal. He survives.

She graduated from high school in Dalhart, Texas in 1925. She moved to Liberal in 1935. She was a sales clerk for C.R. Anthonys, J C Penneys, Anna Trahern Dress Shop and later was the manager for Nu-Style Shoe Store. She and her husband Clay owned and operated Ray's Grill for many years. She was also an agent for Travelers Insurance Co.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Twentieth Century Sunday School Class, Beaucent No. 106, Order of Eastern Star Chapter No. 104 and served as Past Matron, Grand Page, Grand Representative, District Aide, Grand Adah. She received her 50 year pin in 1996. She was a volunteer at the Southwest Medical Ladies Auxiliary for many years.

She is also survived by two sons, Jospeh Meler and wife, Ann, Orcutt, Calif; James Meler and wife, Virginia, Irving, Texas; one step-son, Veryl Byerley, Liberal; one daughter, Alice Yamada and husband Kerry, San Luis Obispo, Calif.; two step-daughters, Mae Riney Eugene, Ore., Doris Mezlow and husband, Ernie, Eugene, Ore.; 20 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren and many great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one step-son; one step-daughter; and numerous great-great grandchildren.

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Miller Chapel with the Reverend Ken Hathaway presiding.

Private burial with the Order of Eastern Star Services will be at the Restlawn Memorial Gardens.

Friends may call the Miller Mortuary from 1 p.m. until 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Memorials are suggested to the Order of Eastern Star No. 104, located at 308 N. Clay or in care of Miller Mortuary , 908 N. Lincoln, Liberal, KS 67905.

RALPH "TRENTON" DAY

SATANTA -- Ralph "Trenton" Day, 77, died Wednesday April 7, 2004, at St. Mary's Hospital in Grand Junction, Colo.

He was born Oct. 27, 1926, to Leonard Charles and Etta L. (Cobbs) Day in Satanta.

He married Helen Irene (Smuck) Buss Dec. 31, 1957.

He graduated from Satanta High School in 1945.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, in the 29th infantry regiment in Okinawa, Japan.

He worked for natural gas production and owned a contracting business before retiring in Rangley, Colo.

Survivors include two sons, Ron Dya, Fort Collins, Colo., David "Nelson" Day, Rangley, Colo.; three daughters, Lenor Wisniewski and husband, Steve, Dolores, Colo., Holly Talbott, Fort Collins, Colo., Phoebe Smith and husband, Wes, Okinawa, Japan; three grandchildren, Matt Day, Heather Talbott and Kyle Talbott; and two sisters, Dorothy "Dot" DeBock, Quinlin, Okla., Marjorie "Peg" Patrick, Pratt.

He was preceded in death by one grandson, , Nathaniel Day; his parents, two brothers, Eugene F. Day, and Jack. E. Day; two sisters, Leota M. Devins and Loretta Lange.

Memorial services will be 11 a, n, Saturday at the Bible Baptist Church in Rangley, Colo. with the Reverend Jack Elder presiding.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the First Baptist Church in Satanta with the Minister Ray Tweed presiding.

Military graveside services will be conducted at Dudley Township Cemetery in Satanta.

Friends may call the Haskell County Funeral Home from 2 p.m. until 8 p.m.

Memorials are suggested to the First Baptist Church or the Dudley Township Cemetery in Satanta in care of Haskell County Funeral Home, P.O. Box 607, Sublette, KS 67877.
