CHARLES V. OWINGS

GARDEN CITY -­ Charles Vance Owings died Sunday, May 16, 2004, at his residence in Garden City.

He was born July 8, 1924, to Vance Mattie and Edith Mattie (McClure) Owings in Exeter, Mo.

He married Juanita Young Aug. 12, 1944, in Satanta. She survives.

He served his country in the United States Army during World War II. He was a retired farmer.

He was ordained as a deacon at First Baptist Church, Satanta. After retiring, he moved to Garden City and served as a deacon and member of First Baptist Church, Holcomb.

His hobbies were hunting, fishing and traveling.

Survivors include two sons, Charles Vance Owings, Jr. and wife, Jimmie Anne, Garden City, and Dwayne Douglas Owings and wife, Kelly Jo, Garden City; two daughters, Deloris Hockett and husband, Doug, Wichita, and Kayra Owings, Garden City; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two brothers, John Carl Owings and wife, Jo, Klamath Falls, Ore., and George Sterling Owings, Grand Prairie, Texas; three sisters, Emella Roller, Seligman, Mo., Annabelle McDaniel, Wheatridge, Colo., and Clarabelle Elliott, Bartlesville, Okla.; and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant son, Claude Curtis Owings.

*Funeral services will be 1 p.m., Thursday at First Southern Baptist Church, Garden City with Rev. Jon Becker presiding.

Military graveside services will be 3 p.m., Thursday in the Dudley Township Cemetery, Satanta.

Haskell County Funeral Home, Sublette, is in charge of arrangements.

Friends may call until 8 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. until noon Wednesday at the funeral home. Friends may also call from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. Wednesday at the First Baptist Church, Holcomb.

Memorials are suggested to First Baptist Church, Holcomb, or the Southwest Kansas Area Agency on Aging, Garden City, in care of Haskell County Funeral Home, Box 607, Sublette, KS 67877.

LONNIE PECK

Johnson -- Lonnie Peck, 83, died Sunday, May 16, 2004 at Stanton County Long Term Care Unit in Johnson.

He was born Aug. 4, 1920, in Vian, Okla. to Bert Samuel and Rosalee (Parker) Peck.

He married Alice Curl, Aug. 3, 1949 in Fort Smith, Ark. She died in 1988

He graduated from high school in 1940 at Vian, Okla.

He was a resident of Johnson since 1970. He worked at the grocery store in Johnson until he retired in 1985.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church. He was a member of Masonic Lodge and Eastern Star.

He is survived by many friends.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church in Johnson with the Rev. Glenn Fogo presiding.

Burial with Masonic Rites will follow at the Stanton County Cemetery in Johnson.

Memorials are suggested to the First United Methodist Church in Johnson in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 605 W. North Ave. Johnson, KS 67855.

JAMES W. DAVIS

ELKHART -- James W. Davis, 82, died Saturday, May 15, 2004 at Western Plains Medical Complex in Dodge City.

He was born June 25, 1921, to James and Lula (Colvin) Davis at Beggs, Okla.

He married Maxine Thomas October 16, 1941, in Preston, Okla. She survives.

He was a resident of Elkhart since 1965.

He was a veteran of WWII. He was a pumper for Texaco Oil.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and training bird dogs.

Other survivors include three daughters, Nancy Munds and husband, Chet, Okmulgee, Okla., Connie Vancil and husband, Gary, Mt. Vernon, Ill., Claudette Boone and husband, Billy, Ulysses; seven grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild; two sisters, Juanita Henderson, Okmulgee, Okla. June Souder, Okmulgee, Okla.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Bill and Willard Davis; and three sisters, Iva Seal, Betty Sadler and Cecil Gibson.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Garnand Funeral Home with the Reverend Terrell Giddens presiding.

Graveside services will be Saturday at Beggs Cemetery in Beggs, Okla.

Friends may call the Garnand Funeral Home in Elkhart until 8 p.m. today.

Memorials are suggested to the Whistle Stop Park or the donor's choice in care of Garnand Funeral Home, P.O. Box 854, Elkhart, KS 67950.

WOODROW E. HOLT

Woodrow E. "Woody" Holt, 92, died Tuesday, May 18, 2004, at the Southwest Medical Center.

He was born May 15, 1912, to Charles W. and Katie E. Gleeson Holt in Seward County.

He married Edda M.White on Dec. 27, 1941 in Sublette. She died on Dec. 18, 1999.

He attended school at Golden Plains in Seward County.

He farmed until 1948. He then was a foreman in road maintenance for the Seward County Road and Bridge Department until he retired on May 6, 1977.

He was a member of the Central Christian Curch.

He enjoyed fishing, bird hunting and baseball.

He is survived by one daughter, Carolyn Comstock and husband Robert, Rogers, Ark.; one grandson, Jeffrey Comstock and wife Alisa, Craig, Colo.; one granddaughter, Casey Comstock, Fall River, Mass.; two sisters-in-law, Della Doran, Liberal and Peggy Holt, Wichita.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Pat and Bill Holt, two sisters, Helen Edwards and Almeda Lowery.

Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Central Christian Church with the reverend Spencer Powers presiding.

Burial will be at Liberal Cemetery.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. Thursday, and from 8-11 a.m. Friday at the Miller Mortuary.

Memorials are suggested to Central Christian Church in care of the mortuary.

ROSE MAE BENNETT

Rose Mae Bennett, 91, died Monday, May 17, 2004, at the Southwest Medical Center Skilled Nursing Unit.

She was born July 7, 1912 to Harley and Pearl (Durham) Barrow in Forgan, Okla.

She married Charles Arthur Bennett on Nov. 27, 1929, in Liberal. He died on Sept. 28, 1982.

She was a homemaker and a liftime resident of Beaver County.

She is survived by one son, Lloyd Bennett, Turpin, Okla.; two daughters, Joyce Shuey, Beaver, Okla. and Cheryl Wolf, Goodwell, Okla.; seven grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren.

Funeral sevices will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Bethel Church of God with Stan Lehnert presiding.

Burial will be at Midway Cemetery in Floris, Okla.

BOBBIE WALSH

ELKHART -­ Bobbie Walsh, 68, died Wedesday, May 19, 2004 near Keyes, Okla.

He was born April 27, 1936 in Elkhart. He married Emily E. Jolliff Nov. 28, 1958 inClayton N.M. She died Oct. 6, 2003.

He was a lifetime resident of Elkhart and an Elkhart High School graduate. After his schooling he served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany. After his discharge he worked in the oilfields as a driller. He worked for Wakefield Drilling. He enjoyed coin collecting, antiques, Geneology, and yard work. Surviviors include 4 sons, Robert Kultgen, Flower Mound, Tx., Ronnie Anderson, San Walsh, and Tom Walsh, all of Elkhart. 2 daughters, Delores Anderson, Guymon, Okla. and Pam Haigler of Elkhart. 1 brother, Max Walsh and 1 sisiter Lola L. Mohs, both of Elkhart. 16 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.

*Funeral Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First Church of God, Elkhart with Pastor John Morden presiding. Burial will be at Elkhart Cemetery. Friends may call 9 a.m. until 8 p.m. Friday at Garnand Funeral Home in Elkhart.

MARVIN S. BRADFIELD

HUGOTON -- Marvin S. Bradfield, 75, died Sunday, May 23, 2004, at the Southwest Medical Center.

Funeral arrangements are pending and will be announced by Paul's Funeral Home, Hugoton.

JEROME EAKES

PLAINS -­ Jerome Eakes, 74, died Friday, May 21, 2004, at the Western Plains Regional Medical Complex, Dodge City.

He was born Sept. 7, 1929, to George J. and Barbara (Roth) Eakes in Plains.

He married Evelyn M. Mertens on Oct. 7, 1952, in Meade. She survives.

He was a farmer and a lifetime resident of Plains.

He was a member of the Saint Patrick Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus, Plains.

He is also survived by six sons, Kevin Eakes, St. Marys, Ronald "Ron" Eakes, Plains, Daniel "Dan" Eakes, Plains, Lawrence "Larry" Eakes, Plains, Roger Eakes, Plains and George Eakes, Plains; five daughters, Bernadette "Bernie" Smith, Hays, Patricia "Patty" Klein, Altus, Okla., Janice Mapel, Dodge City, Bridget Kinkelaar, Dodge City and Peggy Chase, Plains; 29 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one brother, Sylvester Eakes, Wakefield; and six sisters, Sister Geraldine Eakes, Great Bend, Mary Friesen, Plains, Regina Walters, Wichita, Cecilia China, Bakersfield, Calif., Josephine Blacksten, Yukon, Okla. and Frances McCreedy, Bakersfield, Calif.

Holy mass will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Saint Patrick Catholic Church, Plains, with the Reverend Angel Dye presiding.

Rosary will be at 7 p.m. on Tuesday at the Saint Patrick Catholic Church.

Burial will be at the Plains Cemetery.

Friends may call from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Tuesday at the Fidler-Orme Mortuary, Meade.

Memorials are suggested to the Saint Patrick Catholic Church or the Dominican Sisters, Great Bend, in care of the funeral home.
