BERTHA M. EVANS

ULYSSES ­ Bertha Mae Evans, 81, died Tuesday, Aug. 17, 2004, at Western Prairie Care Home in Ulysses.

She was born April 9, 1923, to Charlie B. and Hattie L. (Ross) Bohling in Manhattan.

She married Homer O. Evans May 26, 1947, in Meade County. He died May 10, 2002.

She graduated from New Hampton (Iowa) High School in 1942.

She worked at Boeing during WWII until she moved back to Meade to ranch. In 1949, she moved to Ulysses where she was a farmer, rancher and a bookkeeper.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church.

She was a member of American Agriculture Movement, Order of the Eastern Star, Santa Fe Trail Association, Southwest Kansas Royalty Owners Association, American Legion Auxiliary and the Grant County Historical Society.

Survivors include three daughters, Ethel Mae Evans and Hazel Ann Evans, both of Ulysses, and Tanja Fae Harrison, Lawrence; three grandchildren, Ashlee Myria Harrison, Erin Michelle Harrison and Kelsey Mae Harrison; one brother, Delbert Bohling, Montrose, Colo., and one sister, Lucy Stucky, Topeka.

She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Lucille Harrison and Mildred McPheter.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Saturday at First United Methodist Church in Ulysses with the Rev. Dennis H. Livingston presiding.

Burial will follow at Golden Cemetery in Ulysses.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m., Friday at Garnand Funeral Home in Ulysses.

Memorials are suggested to Western Prairie Care Home or to Grant County EMS, both in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 405 W. Grant, Ulysses, KS 67880.

OPAL P. BUNYAN

HUGOTON ­ Opal P. Bunyan, 91, died Wednesday, Aug. 18, 2004, at Stevens County Hospital in Hugoton.

She was born March 13, 1913, to Walter Houston and Samantha Shedd in Palava, Texas.

She married Lester Frank Bunyan June 16, 1940, in Hereford, Texas. He died Sept. 19, 1968.

She worked in the Long Beach (Calif.) ship yards during World War II. In 1945, she and Lester moved to Hugoton to farm for Lester's dad in Stevens County.

She was a member of the First Christian Church.

Survivors include one son, Fred H. Bunyan and wife Jonna, Seminole, Okla.; one daughter, Helen L. Bunyan, Hugoton; one step son, Ronald and wife Lou, Phoenix; one grandson, Ryan McKinley Bunyan; and friend Morton Brewer.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, Maud Ola Bell, one brother, Floyd Leland Shedd, one nephew and two nieces.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Saturday at the First Christian Church in Hugoton with ministers Jeff Aenk and Robert Bailey presiding.

Burial will follow in the Hugoton Cemetery.

Friends may call until 8 p.m. today at Paul's Funeral Home in Hugoton.

Memorials are suggested to the First Christian Church or Stevens County Senior Citizens Center and may be mailed to Paul's Funeral Home, P.O. Box 236, Hugoton, KS 67951.

MERLE J. DREITZ

ENGLEWOOD ­ Merle J. Dreitz, 63, died Tuesday, Aug. 17, 2004, at his home in Englewood.

He was born Feb. 6, 1941, to Benedict J. and Eleanor (Legletter) Dreitz in Liberal.

He graduated from Liberal High School in 1959. He attended school at Pratt Community College on a basketball scholarship.

He worked in the oil field.

Survivors include one brother, Bennie Dreitz, Fort Worth, Texas; and one sister, Mary Brown, Liberal.

He was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Virginia Mae Mertens.

Private graveside services will be at 4 p.m., Wednesday.

Burial will be in Englewood Cemetery.

Memorials are suggest to Merle Dreitz Memorial Fund in care of Myatt Funeral Home, P.O. Box 578, Ashland, KS 67831.

EVA DIRKS

HESSTON ­ Eva Dirks, 89, died Thursday, Aug. 19, 2004, at Schowalter Villa in Hesston.

She was born Sept. 1, 1914, to Klass W. Dick and Anna Wiens in Beaver County, Okla.

She married Johnny H. Dirks Sept. 8, 1935, in Turpin, Okla. He survives.

She was a homemaker.

She was a member of West Zion Mennonite Church in Moundridge and Turpin (Okla.) Mennonite Church.

Other survivors include two daughters, Joy Ann Imel, Oklahoma City, and LaVerle Schrag, Hutchinson; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Lizzie Dyck and Annie Hiebert, both of Moundridge, and Sara Ediger, Liberal.

She was preceded in death by one brother, N.W. Dick, and three sisters Marie Becker, Martha Janzen and Agnes Hinz.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m., Monday at Schowalter Villa Chapel in Hesston with Pastor Marsha Yoder-Schrock presiding.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m., Tuesday at Turpin Mennonite Church Cemetery with the Rev. Jeff Wintermote presiding.

Friends may call from 9:30 a.m. until service time Monday at Schowalter Villa Chapel.

Memorials are suggested in lieu of flowers to Mennonite Central Committee in care of Moundridge Funeral Home.

MERLE J. DREITZ

ENGLEWOOD ­ Merle J. Dreitz, 63, died Tuesday, Aug. 17, 2004, at his home in Englewood.

FLORENCE L. WEDEL

WINNIE, Texas ­ Florence Lorene Wedel, 75, died Wednesday, June 23, 2004, in Winnie, Texas.

She was born Jan. 14, 1929, to Charles and Louisa (Reddy) Dougherty in Plainville.

She married Henry Leonard Wedel April 16, 1947, in Liberal. He died March 6, 1988.

She worked for Safeway and National Beef.

Survivors include two sons, Wayne Wedel, Turpin, Okla., and Stewart Wedel and wife Kathy, Liberal; one daughter, Janice Regier and husband Harold, Fannett, Texas; nine grandchildren, Christopher Wedel, Joshua Wedel, Matthew Wedel, Jennifer Wedel, Phillip Wedel, Troy Regier, Wayne Regier, Mark Regier and Mike Regier; eight great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Esther Wise, Plainveille, and Mary Bos, Osborne.

She was also preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Phillip Dougherty and Richard Dougherty, and one sister, Ruth Edwards.

Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 28, at Turpin (Okla.) Mennonite Church with Pastor Jeff Wintermote presiding.

Cremation has taken place.

BERNARD L. HINMAN

PLAINS ­ Bernard Lee "Bee" Hinman, 85, died Saturday, Aug. 21, 2004, at Meade District Hospital.

He was born March 8, 1919, to Raleigh and Mary (Berghaus) Hinman in rural Seward County.

He married Norma Rita Calvert Oct. 8, 1945, in Miami. She survives.

He graduated from Kismet High School in 1937.

He joined the Civilian Conservation Corp serving for six months before enlisting in the United States Marine Corps. While serving in the Marine Corps, he was chosen to train in the Navy Cadet Aviation Program. He continued to serve in the Marines for 11 years.

In 1949, he joined the United States Army as a Specialist ES and served as an E6 in Japan during the Korean War before being discharged in 1951. In 1953, he started Bee's Airline operating it until his retirement in 1987.

He was a member of the St. Patrick Catholic Church.

He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the Experimental Aircraft Association, Kansas Aerial Applicators Association and the Aircraft Pilots and Owners Association.

Other survivors include five sons, John Russell Hinman, Tucson, Ariz., Gary Lee Hinman and wife Crystal, Eudora, Richmond Kelly Hinman and wife Kelly, Derby, Raleigh William Hinman and wife Rhandalee, Wichita, and Fredrick Ray Hinman and wife Pamela, Wellington; one daughter, Leigh Ann Hinman, Eudora; 16 grandchildren, Skyler, Megan, Sarah, Alissa, Courtney, Ashley, Haley, Julia, Alexis, Dustin, Wesley, Dylan, Max, Ian, Aidan and James; four great-grandchildren, Christian and Ethan Jackson and Keelie and Emily McLemore; one brother, Raymond Hinman, Flagler, Colo.; and one sister, Louise Kneisel, Wetmore.

He was preceded in death by one son, James Scott Hinman and one sister, Eunice McElroy.

Vigil services were at 7 p.m., Sunday at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Plains.

Holy mass was at 2 p.m., Monday at the church with Father Angel Dy presiding.

Burial will be in the Plains Cemetery.
