NELLIE M. HAMMACK

Nellie Mae (Burdge) Hammack was born to William and Nellie Ellen burdge on June 24, 1918, at the Burdge home place in Hooker. She departed this life at the age of 86 to meet her Lord and Savior on Saturday, August 28, 2004, at Memorial Hospital of Texas County following a short illness.

At the age of nine, she gave her heart to Christ and joined the First Baptist Church. She graduated from Hooker High School in 1936 and Panhandle A & M College in 1940 with B.S. Degree double major in English and home economics. She taught in the Hooker Public School System for three years. It was during her third year of teacher that she met her perfect mate, Calvin James (Ham) Hammack of Purcell, Oklahoma. After a tour of duty in the South Pacific, "Ham, " as he was more commonly known was assigned as a TSgt./radio operator at the Army Air Corps Field in Liberal, Kansas. They were united in marriage on December 29, 1943, in the home of William Burdge. This union was blessed by three children: a son, Jim; a still-born infant, Mary Nell; and a daughter, Marilyn.

Nellie concentrated her energies on homemaking, working in her church, and supporting her husband in the family businesses, Hammack Electric established in 1955 and Hooker TV Cable established in 1957. She was devoted wife, loving mother, and wonderful neighbor. Her home (whether below the ground or above) served as hub of entertainment for family and friends. She overcame difficulties with a great sense of humor and was known for her culinary skills, which no one could quite emulate even with her exact recipes and special ingredients. All those who crossed her path were blessed by her gracious given and elegant style. It was the quality of her heart, however, that allowed Nellie to radiate from the inside-out. Indeed, her beauty was evident to all.

Nellie taught a junior girls' Sunday school for many years and later graduated with many of the same girls to teach their adult women's Bible study. She served on the parsonage building committee and helped design the baptistery stained glass window. She was a member of Hagolu and the P.E.O. sisterhood and served on the first HHS All-School Reunion Committee in 1989.

Her greatest sense of pride came from being "Nonie" to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She delighted in their successes and wept over their hurts, leaving behind a Christian legacy of memories full of loving, caring and sharing. Nellie was preceded in death by her parents; one infant daughter; one sister, Maud Depuy; and four brothers, George, Abie, Jiggs, and B.G. Burdge. Survivors include one son, Jim and Ilene Hammack of Pagosa Springs, Colorado; a daughter, Eddy and Marilyn Scoggins of Dallas, Texas; a grandson, Rod J. and and Robin Hammack of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma; two granddaughters, Mark and Holly Moore and Kelsey Scoggins of Edmond, Oklahoma; three great-grandchildren, Rylen and Layton Moore of Edmond and Kylie Hammack of Broken Arrow; and a wealth of friends.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, September 1, 2004, at 10:30 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Hooker with Eddy Scoggins officiating. Burial will be in the Hooker Cemetery with Roberts Brothers Funeral Home, Inc. in charge of the arrangements.
