CHARLES E. KEATING
Charles Edmond Keating, 87, died Friday, Aug. 27, 2004.
He was born May 28, 1917, in Liberal.
He married Opal Hargrove June 10, 1939. She died in January of 2002.
He was an aircraft engineer working in aircraft design and manufacturing and had patents for some of his interior design work.
He was active in church.
He enjoyed square dancing and camping.
He was active in Toastmasters, as an adult leader in Jobs Daughters and Demolays as well as coaching girl's softball.
He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Hi Twelve, Shriners, the First Presbyterian Church and loved traveling especially in the motor home.
Survivors include Patricia Hanson, Bonita Springs, Fla.; Charles Eugene Keating, Burbank, Calif.; Mary Zimmerman, Idyllwild, Calif.; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m., Friday at San Jacinto Valley Cemetery.

LEONA NELSON
Leona Nelson, 74, died Tuesday, Aug. 31, 2004, at Southwest Medical Center.
She was born April 8, 1930, to Edgar and Mattie (Johnson) Hall in Salem, Ark.
She married A.J. "Blackie" Nelson Oct. 17, 1951, in Clayton, N.M. He survives.
She was a 1949 graduate of Salem High School.
She managed the Petroleum Club for many years and had been a waitress and manager of the Country Club.
Other survivors include four sons, Jim Billinger and wife Collene, Viola, Ark., Rocky Nelson and wife Emily, Fort Collins, Colo., Jack Nelson, Phoenix, and Buck Nelson, Phoenix; three daughters, Rhonda Bartling and husband Randy, Grand Island, Neb., Rene Nelson, Liberal and Ramona Schwindt and husband Nick, Liberal; 24 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Iona Davis, Moscow.
She was preceded in death by four brothers, Vertis, Johnson, Calvin and Eli Hall, five sisters, Bitha Barker, Cecil Clayton, Roxie Mae Church, Veda Ann Otto and Marie Davis and one granddaughter, Jennifer Dubbs.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., Friday at the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Rockey Ratts presiding.
Burial will be in the Arkalon Cemetery.
Friends may call from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m., Thursday at Kitch-Brenneman Funeral Home.

BONNIE F. WAGENSELLER
ELLINWOOD Bonnie Faye Wagenseller, 70, died Monday, Aug. 30, 2004, at Rice County Hospital in Lyons.
She was born Sept. 7, 1933, to Moses Whitehorse and Emma St. Germain in Wolfpoint, Mont.
She was a homemaker.
She was a member of the Catholic faith.
Survivors include two sons, Mike Wagenseller, Wolfpoint, Mont., and Jimmie Wagenseller, Baker, Okla.; two daughters, Bonita Ward, Ellinwood, and Susie Roberts, Ellinwood; 13 grandhchildren; one brother, Moses Whitehorse, Wolfpoint, Mont.; one sister, Lillian Beaudry, Libby, Mont.; and companion Ned Keeler, Ellinwood.
She was preceded in death by one son, Gary Wagenseller.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Thursday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Ellinwood with Father John Maes presiding.
Burial will be in the Lakin-Comanche District Cemetery
in Ellinwood.
Friends may call from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. today at Kimple Funeral Home in Ellinwood.
MERLE BETZ
Merle Betz, 81, died Sunday, Aug. 29, 2004, at Liberal Good Samaritan Center.
He was born Sept. 22, 1922, to Jake and Anna Betz in Bison.
He married Mary Amanda Hawkins July 14, 1941, in Ashland. She survives.
He was co-owner of B & K Transmission before retiring.
He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 58.
He served in the U.S. Army during WWII from 1945 until 1946.
Other survivors include three sons, Mike Betz, Wichita, Scott Betz, Fairplay, Colo., and Duart Betz and wife Patti, Liberal; two daughters, Ann Bell and husband Patrick, Tyrone, Okla., and Tonda Betz, Turpin, Okla.; nine grandchildren, April Coker, Aaron Betz, Becky Betz, Jason Betz, Julie Hanner, Patrick Betz, Patrice Betz, Justin Bell and Cody Bell; 11 great-grandchildren; one brother, Donny Betz, Jetmore; and three sisters, Marcheta Hogsett, Ness City, Marjorie Thomas, Denver, and Marchtella Stegman, Loveland, Colo.
He was preceded in death by one son, Gary Betz, four brothers, Eddie, Howard, Cliff, Harold and Jake Betz, Jr., and two grandchildren, Claresa and Melody Betz.
Graveside services were at 2 p.m. today at Ness City Cemetery
with Pastor Russell King presiding.
Military honors will be given by Fort Riley Honor Guard.

CHESTER HOCKENSMITH
Chester A. Hockensmith, 98, died Tuesday, Aug. 31, 2004 at Satanta District Hospital Long Term Care.
He was born Sept. 15, 1905, to Eddie S. and Hattie H. Ives Hockensmith in St. John.
He married Viola M. Pinkston May 23, 1926. She died April 3, 2003.
He graduated high school at Radium.
He farmed for many years in Stevens and Seward counties moving to Liberal in 1942. He was a flight instructor for four years at Liberal Air Base and also gave local residents flying lessons. He operated a restaurant at the air base and later at the bowling alley. He moved to Leoti in 1966 and was an auto salesman for many years before he returned to Liberal in 1996.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Leoti.
Survivors include one son, Gary Rodger Hockensmith and wife Karen, Abilene; two daughters, Jerri Waters, North Richland Hills, Texas, and June Brooks, Kismet; twelve grandchildren and 35 great-grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by his parents, two sons, one brother, two sisters and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at United Methodist Church in Satanta with the Rev. Jeff Miller presiding.
Graveside services will be at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Point View Cemetery
in Radium.
Friends may call at Miller Mortuary between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. Thursday and between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. Friday.

FLORENCE MAY HADLEY
HUGOTON Florence May Hadley, 87, died Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2004, at Satanta District Hospital.
She was born May. 6, 1917, to Enos Thomas and Nellie May (Leonard) Hadley in Coldwater.
She moved to Indiana with her parents in 1934 and completed her schooling there. She moved back to Coldwater in 1953, then to Belleville and to Hugoton in 1967. She had been a resident of the Satanta Long Term Care Unit since May 2, 2003.
She was a clerk for 25 years at Duckwalls Variety Store and Grocery Store in Hugoton.
She was a member of Bethel Friends Church in Hugoton.
She wrote many poems and a book of gleanings.
Survivors include many nephews, nieces and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; five brothers, Forrest, Seth C., Gloyd, Leonard and Thomas Hadley; three nephews and one niece.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Bethel Friends Church in Hugoton with Min. Eric Mason and Min. Robert Storms presiding.
Burial will be at 4 p.m. Saturday at Crown Hill Cemetery
in Coldwater.
Friends may call from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. Friday at Paul's Funeral Home in Hugoton.
