CHARLES E. SHORT

DODGE CITY - Charles E. Short, 84, died Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2004 at Manor of the Plains in Dodge City.

He was born June 21, 1920 to Norval Earl and Fannie Felgner Short in Kinsley.

He married Vera Ann Simmons July 14, 1940 in Kinsley. She survives.

He was a 1939 graduate of Kinsley High School after which he worked at a service station for a short while.

He was a self-employed floor covering mechanic for 30 years and later was a parts supervisor at National Beef in Liberal, retiring in 1986.

He served in the United States Army during WWII.

He was a member of the Liberal Friends Church and a life member of Howard Gotschall VFW Post No. 1714 in Dodge City.

Other survivors include three daughters, Delilah Winkler and husband Edward, Hoisington, Carole Racy and husband Jules, Ensign and Judy Kaye Stevens and husband Donald D., Wichita; 10 grandchildren; and 25 great grandchildren; and a brother-in-law, Louis Rosproy, WaKeeney.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Lauren and Lowell Short and a sister, Delilah Rosproy.

Funeral services will be at noon, Friday at Burkhart-Ziegler Funeral Chapel in Dodge City with the Rev. Dick Robbins presiding.

Burial will be in the Kansas Veterans Cemetery in Fort Dodge with military rites by Fort Riley.

Friends may call until 8 p.m. today with the family present from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Burkhart-Ziegler Funeral Chapel.

Memorials are suggested to Hospice of the Prairie or Manor of the Plains both in care of Burkhart-Ziegler Funeral Chapel, 1901 N. 14th Ave., Dodge City, KS 67801.

JOHN STALEY

GARDEN CITY -- - John Staley, 83, died Friday, Sept. 3, 2004, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.

He was born Sept. 20, 1920, to Frank L. and Anna L. Holland Staley in Finney County.

He married Loretta Long Sept. 5, 1940, in Cimarron. She survives.

He attended rural school in Finney County and graduated from Garden City High School in 1939.

He was a lifelong resident of Finney County, where he farmed.

He enjoyed his family, his farming, traveling and spending time with his grandchildren.

Other survivors include two sons, Pete Staley and wife Molly, Garden City, and Jim Staley and wife Sidni, Garden City; five daughters, Patricia Blech and husband Darrell, Springfield, Mo., Lavon Jenkins and husband Mike, Des Moines, Iowa, Anna Mae Brown and husband Dan, Liberal, Nancy Kincaid and husband Rob, Rose Hill, and Ila Finch and husband Jerry, Garden City; two sisters, Corrine Schmidt, Garden City, Esther Poarch, Colonial Heights, Va.; 12 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two infant children, Judith Staley and Wesley Staley and a sister, Charlotte Haas.

Funeral Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Garnand Funeral Home in Garden City with Chaplain Remigius Ekweariri presiding.

Burial will be at Valley View Cemetery in Garden City.

Friends may call between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. until service time at Garnand Funeral Home in Garden City.

ELAINE HERL

Elaine Herl, 65, died Sunday, Sept. 5, 2004, at Aurora Medical Center in Aurora, Colo.

She was born Oct. 9, 1938, to Ralph and Geraldine (DeFord) Stewart in Ogallala, Neb.

She married Clifford Herl March 10, 1973, in Liberal. He survives.

She attended the School of Cosmetology in Ogallala, Neb.

She was a homemaker and had driven a school bus for St. Anthony Catholic School.

She was a member of the St. Anthony Catholic Church and Altar Society.

She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary and a past Girl Scout and Cub Scout leader.

Other survivors include three sons, DeLaine Herl and wife Mary, St. Charles, Mo., Charles Herl and wife Janet, Liberal, and Leon Herl, Liberal; four daughters, Linda Ponce, Glenn Falls, N.Y., Catherine Herl and husband Ron Vasquez, Liberal, Paula Shoemate and husband Carl, Springfield, Mo., and Carla Zodrow, Hoxie; 16 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one brother, Bud Stuart, Santa Rosa, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Vigil will be at 7 p.m., Thursday at Kitch-Brenneman Funeral Home Chapel.

Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m., Friday at St. Anthony Catholic Church with Father Patrick Keyes presiding.

Burial will be in Liberal Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to St. Anthony Catholic Church in care of Kitch-Brenneman Funeral Home.

NORA M. MCNEIL

CROWLEY, La. ­ Nora Mae McNeil, 93, died Saturday, Sept. 4, 2004, in Crowley, La.

She was born Oct. 3, 1910, to Hillis and Manie (Souter) Herren in Crawford, Okla.

She married Harold Nathan McNeil May 2, 1931, in Lawrence. He died in March of 1991.

She was a homemaker.

She had been a member of the Church of the Nazarene serving as board member, missionary president, Sunday school teacher and treasurer.

Survivors include two daughters, Judith Patrick and husband, Don, Crowley, La., and Phyllis Hind and husband Samuel, Swaziland, Africa; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Saturday at the Warren-McElwain Mortuary.

Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery in Lawrence.

The family will greet friends from 7 p.m. until 8:30 p.m., Friday at the mortuary.

EMMA B. COBB

PLAINS ­ Emma B. Cobb, 92, died Thursday, Sept. 2, 2004, at Southwest Medical Center.

Funeral arrangements are pending and will be announced by Miller Mortuary.

LARRY D. LEAMING

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. ­ Larry D. Leaming, 64, died Thursday, Sept. 2, 2004, at St. Mary's Health Center in Jefferson City, Mo.

He was born Aug. 15, 1940, in Colorado Springs, Colo.

He was employed as a technician with the Southwest Home Care Service in Guymon, Okla., and Liberal.

He enjoyed sports and loved watching his children participate in sports.

Survivors include his mother, Helen Mahoney, Hooker, Okla.; three sons, Vincent Leaming, Kansas City, Mo., Aaron Leaming, Jefferson City, Mo., and Sandy Leaming of Colorado; three daughters, Suzette Leaming, Jefferson City, Mo., Sarah Leaming, Hooker, Okla., and Amber Peak, Gower, Mo.; three grandchildren, Cody Leaming, Derek Peak and Ryan Sexton-Leaming; a half brother, Randy Leaming, Colorado Springs, Colo.; and one uncle, Orval Young, Hooker, Okla.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Tuesday at the United Methodist Church in Hooker, Okla., with the Rev. Rick Trobaugh presiding.

Burial will be in the Hooker Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to the Hooker Cemetery Fund in care of Roberts Brothers Funeral Home, Box 745, Hooker, OK 73945.

J.C. MAXWELL

ULYSSES ­ Dr. J.C. Maxwell, Jr., 55, died Monday, Sept. 6, 2004, at his home in Ulysses.

Funeral services are pending and will be announced by Garnand Funeral Home.

ETHEL MARIE KOBS

MEADE ­ Ethel Marie Kobs, 89, died Tuesday, Sept. 7, 2004, at Lone Tree Compassionate Care Center in Meade.

She was born Jan. 7, 1915, to Fred Sheldon Bruington, Sr. and Florence Bruington (Reynolds) Miller in rural Meade.

She married Edwin E. Kobs June 4, 1932, in Meade. He died Aug. 14, 2002.

After marriage the couple lived in Meade where she maintained their home and worked for the United Postal Service for many years.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Priscilla Club and Order of the Eastern Star, all of Meade.

She enjoyed gardening, reading and cooking for her family.

Survivors include one son, William Kobs, Meade; two daughters, Wilma Pennington, Meade and Charlene Keene, Trousdale; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Joe Bruington, Montezuma.

She was also preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, Reynolds Bruington, Fred Bruington, Jr. and Rolla Miller, and one sister, Helen Murry.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m., Friday at the United Methodist Church in Meade with the Rev. Susan Greene presiding.

Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery in Meade.

Friends may call from 1 p.m. until 7 p.m., Thursday at Fidler-Orme-Bachman Mortuary in Meade.

Memorials are suggested to the United Methodist Church or Lone Tree Compassionate Care Center in care of Fidler-Orme-Bachman Mortuary at 212 S. Fowler, Meade, KS, 67864.
