BLANCHE B. HOOD

MONTEZUMA ­ Blanche B. Hood, 95, died Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2004, at Bethel Home, Inc., in Montezuma.

She was born July 14, 1909, to George P. and Lydia (Gee) Preston in Bucklin.

She married Oliver "Lorin" Hood in June of 1944. He preceded her in death.

She worked as a store clerk for McCalmont's IGA in Montezuma for many years.

She was a member of the Morningside Community Church in Montezuma.

She enjoyed visiting with people.

Survivors include one daughter, Saundra Giesbricht and husband Ronald, Colorado Springs, Colo.; one grandson, Craig L. Giesbrecht and wife Leslie S.; two great-grandchildren, Dalton L. and Ava K. Giesbrecht; and many friends.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; her first husband; her second husband, Joe Humphrie; one infant son; one infant daughter; two brothers, George and Claude Preston; and six sisters, Lola Hutchinson, Lula Boyd, Floreta Boehs, Marcel Preston, Lucille Preston and Florence Mock.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m., Saturday at the Morningside Community Church in Montezuma with Minister Jeff Mitchell presiding.

Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in Montezuma.

Friends may call until 8 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. and from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m., Friday at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to the Morningside Community Church or Bethel Home, both of Montezuma, and may be mailed to Montezuma Funeral Home, Box 421, Montezuma, KS 67867.

STEPHAN W. OWEN

Stephan W. Owen, 50, died Tuesday, Sept. 21, 2004, at his residence in Wichita.

He was born Jan. 19, 1954, to Kenneth Owen and Ruth Irene (Hawks) Owen in Hiawatha.

He married Sandy Holifield in 1973 in Scott City.

He graduated from Scott City High School in 1972. He attended Garden City Community College.

He worked for Denny's IGA and Gibson's Dept. Store in Scott City. He then worked for Haliburton in Liberal and Winfield.

He worked as an assistant manager for Quik Trip in stores in both Winfield and Wichita.

Survivors include his father and his stepmother, Marge Owen, both of Bartlesville, Okla.; one son, William Gene Owen, Winfield; two daughters, Aimee Lee Owen, Winfield, and Erin Ruth Owen, currently with the U.S. Army in Iraq; three grandchildren; three brothers, Ronnie Owen, Arlington, Texas, Donnie Owen, Bartlesville, Okla., and Kenneth Owen, Edwardsville; three sisters, Meredith Morton, Dodge City, Cheryl Brock, Turpin, Okla., Naomi Warren, Dodge City; close friends, Jim and Stephanie Lynne; and caregiver, Sandy Harviston.

He was preceded in death by his mother.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., Friday at Swisher-Taylor and Morris Chapel.

Burial will be at 12 p.m., Saturday at the Scott City Cemetery.

Friends may visit until 8 p.m. today, and the family will greet friends from 6 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. today at Swisher-Taylor and Morris Funeral Home.

Memorials are suggested to the University of Kansas Emergency Fund, c/o Donna Sweet, M.D., 1010 N. Kansas, Wichita, KS 67214.

L. MINER GARETSON

COPELAND ­ L. Miner "Hank" Garetson, 88, died Thursday, Sept. 23, 2004, at Bethel Home, Inc., in Montezuma.

He was born May 1, 1916, to James Davis and Laura Magdalena (Reynolds) Garetson near Copeland.

He married Lillian M. Davis Sept. 10, 1939, in Cimarron. She survives.

He was a lifetime resident of Copeland.

He worked as a mechanic for Hoskinson Motor Company in Copeland from 1934 to 1946. He was also a farmer.

He attended the United Methodist Church in Copeland, I.O.O.F. Lodge in Copeland, Wheatbelt Godo Sam's Camping Club in Garden City and was a past school board member of Copeland Grade School.

He enjoyed camping, fishing and playing dominoes. He loved his family and enjoyed being with them.

Other survivors include one daughter, Deloris Bogart and husband, Harold, Copeland; two grandsons, Gary Bogart and wife, Stacy, and Bryan Bogart and wife, Glenda; seven great-grandchildren; one sister, Mary Bell, Dyer, Tenn.; and numerous nieces and nephews and other friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one infant daughter; four brothers, John, Paul, Robert and James Garetson; and two sisters, Marjorie Waldron and Wanda McManis.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m., Monday at United Methodist Church in Copeland with Ministers Sheryl White and Warren Cico presiding.

Burial will be in Copeland Cemetery.

Friends may call until 8 p.m. today Saturday and from 2 p.m. until 8 p.m., Sunday at Haskell County Funeral Home in Sublette.

Memorials are suggested to the Copeland Santa Fe Senior Center or Copeland Cemetery in care of Danham Drilling in Copeland or Haskell County Funeral Home, Box 607, Sublette, KS, 67877.

JIMMIE F. MARTINEZ

Jimmie F. Martinez, 87, died Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2004, at the Veteran's Center in Norman, Okla.

He was born Sept. 22, 1917, to Jim Martinez and Rose Luna Martinez Torres in Caddo County, Okla.

He married Doris Kerlick Martinez Aug. 17, 1940, in Fort Smith, Ark.

He served in the U.S. Army during W.W. II. He was part of the Normandy Invasion landing on Utah Beach. He spent his last year in service fighting in Germany.

He managed the Kimball Grain Elevator for many years.

He worked for Liberal Public Schools until his retirement in 1981.

He served as an elder in the Western Avenue Church of Christ. He was a member of the Alameda Church of Christ and was active in the church's outreach program.

He was active in civic organizations such as the Kiwanis Club, Chamber of Commerce and the Oklahoma Farm Bureau. He was a founding board member of the Caddo Kiowa Vocational Technical Center in Ft. Cobb, Okla. He was a member of the Caddo County fair board and also served on the Carnegie Tri County fair board.

Survivors include one daughter, Sherri Logan, Norman, Okla.; one grandson, Jay Logan, Norman, Okla.; one brother, Leon Torres, Anadarko, Okla.; two sisters; Mae Torres Brandshaw and husband Dean, Cyril, Okla., and Grace Torres Guerrero and husband Joe, Lawton, Okla.; and many nieces, nephews and their families.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; one son, Jimmie Lynn; and brothers and sisters, Paul Martinez, Pete Martinez, Josie Martinez Lopez and Ernest Torres.

Funeral services were at 2 p.m. today at the Minco Church of Christ with Eddie Stoltz and John Grant presiding.

Burial followed at the Evergreen Cemetery in Minco, Okla.

FLOYD MATHIS

Floyd Mathis, 91, of Hooker, Oklahoma passed away Thursday, September 23, 2004 at Southwest Medical Center in Liberal, Kansas.

Floyd was born April 7, 1913 in Mills County, Texas, near Waco, the son of Ed and Anna Jane Woolsey Mathis.

He moved to the Panhandle of Texas after his Dad passed away in 1918. Floyd graduated from Lefors High School with the Class of 1933. He met his future wife Dell Carruth there, and they were married on January 28, 1940 at her sister's home in Pampa, Texas.

Floyd and Dell lived at Artesia, New Mexico for a time then moved to Lefors, Texas where their first son, Joe, was born. They moved to Amarillo, Texas where there second son, Bryan, was born. In 1950, they moved to the Tyrone-Hooker, Oklahoma area and made Hooker their home since.

Floyd was a member of the Hooker Church of Christ where he served as an elder for 20 years. He was a member of the Tyrone School Board; was on the board and was president of the Blackmer Memorial Golf Course of Hooker. He loved fishing, gardening and was an avid golfer.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, E.A. Mathis, and his wife Dell, October 8, 1999.

Survivors include his son Joe and his wife Dianna of Guymon, Oklahoma; and Bryan and Yvonne Mathis of Hooker, Oklahoma; one brother, Ted and Audrey Mathis of Canon City, Colorado; three grandchildren Drs. Wynde and Mike Ashman of Munsie, Ind., Heather and Rod Little of McKinney, Texas and Lindsey Mathis of Stillwater, Oklahoma; two great-grandchildren Madison and Joel Ashman.

Funeral services will be at 4:00 p.m., Sunday, September 26, 2004, at the Church of Christ in Hooker, Oklahoma with Neville Buchanan presiding. Arrangements directed by Roberts Brothers Funeral Home, Inc., in Hooker, Oklahoma.

Memorials may be given to the Cal Farley's Boys Ranch or the Hooker Church of Christ and may be left at the Roberts Brothers Funeral Home, Box 745, Hooker, Oklahoma 73945.

IRENE STOUT

Irene Stout, 88, died Monday, Sept. 27, 2004, at Hospice House in Hutchinson.

She was born June 11, 1916, to David L. and Bertha A. Anderson Baird in Preston.

She married Harold Forbes Feb. 14, 1934, in Liberal.

She then married F.V. Stout Jan. 4, 1953, in Clayton, N.M. He died June 8, 1979.

She was a retired LPN, working at Southwest Medical Center.

Survivors include one son, Bob Forbes, Bridge City, Texas; one daughter, Ann Kilgore, Hutchinson; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Pauline Martin, Kansas City, Mo., and Goldie Hutchins, Water Valley, Ky.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, five sisters and two grandsons.

Cremation is planned.

Graveside service will be at 1 p.m., Friday at Liberal Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to Hospice of Reno County in care of Penwell­Gabel Funeral Home and Crematory.
