RACHEL M. VANAZIA

MEADE -- Rachel M. Vanazia, 72, died Thursday, Jan. 6, 2005, at Western Plains Medical Complex in Dodge City.

She was born July 11, 1932, to Benjamin McWithey and Rhonda Anna Schnellbacher in Meade.

She married Chester Leroy Vanazia Feb. 4, 1973, in Dodge City. He died Feb. 6, 2001.

She was a homemaker.

Survivors include four sons, Richard "Rick" Price, Forgan, Okla., Arron "Buzzie" Price, Meade, Lester Price Jr., Dodge City, and Jerry Price, Irrigon, Ore.; three daughters, Agnes Sharp, Apache Junction, Ariz., Wanda Price, Mesa, Ariz., and Carla L. Ellis, Columbus, Ohio; several grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

Graveside memorial services will be at 3:30 p.m. today at Graceland Cemetery in Meade with Father Ted Skalsky presiding.

Cremation has taken place.

Memorials are suggested to the Rebekah Lodge of Dodge City in care of Fidler-Orme-Bachman Mortuary of Meade.

INDUS E. DEY

Indus E. Dey, 95, died Thursday, Dec. 30, 2004.

She was born Aug. 30, 1909, to Minnie and Henry Forrer in Herrington.

She attended country school and graduated from Wellington High School.

She married Hart Dey Sept. 17, 1932, in Wellington. He preceded her in death.

The couple owned and operated the Ulysses News from 1946 to 1964. They also owned and operated the News Office Supply Store until 1979.

She also worked as a photographer's assistant and model and later as a seamstress, upholster, homemaker and refinisher of wood.

She attended the Presbyterian Church and the Methodist Church in Wellington and the First United Methodist Church in Ulysses.

She was a member of the Southwest Kansas Library Board and Loaves and Fishes in Ulysses as well as the Food Bank in Sutter Creek, Calif.

Survivors include two daughters, Sharon Wainwright and husband Kenneth, and Diane Burkholder and husband Lynn; five grandchildren, Beth Wainwright and husband Mark, Sarah Spencer Suryan and husband Joe, Shari Spencer Horton, Steven Spencer, Thomas Spencer and Gwen; four step grandchildren, Wayne, Dayton, Rod and Deborah Burkholder; 11 great-grandchildren, Kattie Burris, Amanda, Becca and Emily Suryan, Jocelyn, Hannah, Grace, Jeremiah and wife Sandy, Jacob, Jackson and Spencer; seven step great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter, Sophia Mae Spencer; three brothers, Gene and Harry Forrer and Georgia Ruth; one sister, Charlene Pietsch and husband Carl; and many nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Julian and Samuel Forrer, one sister-in-law, Mildred Forrer, and her friends, Helen Durham, Jean Kriter and Arlene Minks.

Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church in Ulysses and later in Sacramento, Calif.

A private burial will be in Ulysses.

Memorials are suggested to the memorial fund at First United Methodist Church in Ulysses in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 405 W. Grant, Ulysses, KS 67880.

GLADYS I. SCRANTON

Gladys I. Scranton, 106, died Saturday, Jan. 1, 2005, at Liberal Good Samaritan Center.

She was born Aug. 20, 1898, to Joseph W. and Florence I. Popejoy Bates in Langdon.

She married Ira Edmond Scranton Dec. 15, 1930, in Hugoton. He died Dec. 15, 1959.

She was a homemaker and involved in farming in Stevens County.

She was a member of the Hugoton Methodist Church for more than 50 years.

She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Hugoton for more than 50 years.

She enjoyed playing the piano and gardening vegetables.

Survivors include one son, Beryl Scranton and wife Judy, Liberal; two granddaughters, Sheri L. McDowell and husband Jack and Stacey Sandell and husband Scott, all of Liberal; two great-grandsons, Dylan and Hunter Sandell, Liberal; and two nieces, Maxine Walters, Phoenix, and Yvonne Doerfer, Mancos, Colo.

She was also preceded in death by her parents, one son and one daughter.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Miller Chapel with the Rev. Jerry Odle presiding.

Burial will be in Hugoton Cemetery.

Friends may call until 8 p.m. today at Miller Mortuary.

HERBERT R. PARSONS

Herbert R. Parsons, 98, died Friday, Dec. 24, 2004, at Prince William Hospital in Manassas, Va.

He was born Oct. 23, 1906, to Lee and Martha Orlena (Mattie Brownlee) Parsons in Hooker, Okla.

He married Emma J. Crawford June 7, 1930, in Hooker, Okla. She preceded him in death.

He graduated from Adams (Okla.) High School in 1935.

He attended New Mexico Highlands University in Las Vegas, N.M.

He taught school in Rio Arriba, N.M.

He later worked for the National Farmers Union Cooperative.

He served a two-year tour in Liberia and West Africa with the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

He enjoyed playing the violin with bands around the Hooker area in his youth.

Survivors include one son, Steven Parsons, Alexandria, Va.; one daughter, Phyllis Lea Pickinpaugh and husband Lynn, Centreville, Va.; three grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Ernest C. Parsons and wife Ruby, Citrus Heights, Calif., and Travers Parsons and wife Lois, Wanette, Okla.

He was also preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Harlin, Preston and Jeff Parsons; and four sisters, Ola Mathes, Bessie Rawson, Gladys Mills and Cordelia (Cordia) Lee Humble.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Roberts Brothers Funeral Home in Hooker, Okla., with the Rev. Jimmy Don Gibson presiding.

Burial will be in Hooker Cemetery.

LOUISE WINFREY

PLAINS -- Louise Winfrey, 100, died Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2005, at Western Plains Regional Medical Center in Dodge City.

She was born July 22, 1904, to Frank and Etta (Smith) Sherman on a farm in rural Dudley, Ill.

She attended a rural school near the farm. She graduated from Plains High School in 1925. She later attended Emporia State Teachers College.

She married William E. Winfrey May 5, 1928. He died Dec. 16, 1981.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women.

She was a past member of the WCTU, Order of the Eastern Star, Young at Heart and the North Plains Social and Study Club, all of Plains.

She enjoyed working with crafts, quilting, sewing and making dolls.

Survivors include four sons, Darrell Winfrey and wife Vera Mae, Plains, Larry Winfrey and wife Mickey, Plains, Gordon Winfrey and wife Eldena, Plains, and James Winfrey and wife Karen, Plains; two daughters, Carol Palmer, Dodge City, and Joy Brackey, Dodge City; 26 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; one brother, John Shuman, Mesa, Ariz.; and two sisters, Helen Roberts, Longmont, Colo., and Elsie Mae Trimpa, Dodge City.

She was also preceded in death by her parents, four brothers and two sisters.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Plains with the Rev. Terry Mayhew presiding.

Burial will be in Plains Cemetery.

Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday at Fidler-Orme-Bachman Mortuary in Meade.

Memorials are suggested to the United Methodist Church in care of the funeral home.

SARA M. LEPPERT

Sara Marilyn Leppert, 90, died Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2005, at the Lincoln Community Nursing in Lincoln, Mo.

She was born on June 15, 1914, to Ray and Ethel Chaffin Stalcup on a homesteaded farm in Stevens County.

In 1931, she graduated from Liberal High School. In 1935, she graduated from Research Hospital as a registered nurse.

She married Charles Richard Leppert April 24, 1937, in Kansas City, Mo. He survives.

She was a private duty nurse across the Midwestern and Western part of the United States and in Canada. She was also an industrial nurse at Westinghouse Company later known as Bendix and Research Clinic, both in Kansas City. In 1960, she was the first school nurse for the Benton County RII School District in Lincoln, Mo. In 1969, he was a charge nurse at Baptist Memorial Hospital and later on at Lakeside Orthopedic Hospital, both of Kansas City.

In 1973, he was a charge nurse at Golden Valley Memorial Hospital, in Clinton, Mo., and then became the first Administrator of the Benton County Health Department, established in 1975. In 1982, she officially retired from nursing after a long and distinguished career.

She was a member of the American Nurses Association, an honorary member of the Missouri State Nurses Association, served on the Board of Directors of the Benton County Health Department Hospice and a member of the Lincoln Community Nursing Home Guild.

She was one of the founding members of the Overland Park Church of Christ in Overland Park and a member of the Church of Christ of Lincoln, Mo. She also taught Sunday school.

Other survivors include one daughter, Marina Scheiner and husband Steve, Sedalia, Mo.; one grandson, Christopher and step-granddaughter Rachel, both of Sedalia; one step-grandson, Joshua Munger, Excelsior Springs, Mo.; one granddaughter, Sarah Marie Leppert, Independence; one brother, Irl Nelson Stalcup and wife Jean, Oceanside, Calif.; one sister, Mary Martz, Liberal; one sister-in-law, Helen Stalcup, Lewisville, Texas; and many friends and family.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, John Stalcup, one sister Georgie Rose and one son, Curtis Leppert.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Davis-Miller Funeral Home, in Lincoln, Mo., with Evangelist Charles Rose presiding. --

Burial will be in the Lincoln Cemetery in Lincoln, Mo.

Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday at Davis-Miller Funeral Home in Lincoln. --

Memorial are suggested to the Benton County Health Department or the Lincoln Community Nursing Home.
