HOMER McELHANEY

ULYSSES -- Homer "Virgil" McElhaney, died Monday, Jan. 24, 2005, at his residence in Ulysses.

He was born July 8, 1920, to Benjamin Harrison (Harry) and Emma Jane Cook McElhaney in Hudson.

He married Elberta Jane Lee in 1944. She survives.

He graduated from Hudson High School in 1939.

He worked for Amoco for more than 30 years and owned a landscaping business.

He was a member of the Ulysses Church of Christ.

He was a member of the Lions Club.

He enjoyed working with cattle and also farmed for a number of years.

He was a World War II Navy veteran, serving in the Phillipines and Japan.

Other survivors include two daughters, Janie Amann, Tulsa, Okla., and Nancy Jeter and husband Bill, Hays; seven grandsons, Paul Lindquist, Mark Lindquist, Carl Lindquist, Eric Madden, Blake Madden, Chris Jeter and Tait Jeter; two great-grandchildren, Brooks Madden and Elyssa Herrington; one brother, Alva McElhaney and wife Doris, Wichita; and one sister, Opal Foster, Wichita.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Olen McElhaney, Little Rock, Ark., and one sister, Maxine Brantley, Wichita.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Ulysses Church of Christ with the Rev. Warren Baldwin presiding.

Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. Friday in the Stafford Cemetery in Stafford.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday at Grant County Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to the Ulysses Church of Christ or the Grant County Senior Center in care of Grant County Funeral Home, 218 S. Main, Ulysses, KS 67880.

SAMMA L. WISE

ULYSSES -- Samma Lynn Wise, 54, died Monday, Jan. 24, 2005, at Southwest Medical Center.

She was born March 2, 1950, to Robert and Eileen (Silvey) Comer in Lamar, Colo.

She married Bud Wise May 1, 1969, in Ulysses. He survives.

She was a homemaker. She worked for Ulysses Co-op and C-Plus. She was a CMA at the Western Prairie Care Home of Ulysses for several years.

She attended the First Assembly of God Church in Ulysses.

Other survivors include her step mother, Eunice Comer; two daughters, Cherie Pennington and husband Nathan, Tahlequah, Okla., and Shiella Vardeman and husband Justin, Ulysses; four grandchildren; one brother, Tom Comer and wife Sandra, Henderson, Texas; one sister, Lanna Childers and husband Dale, Iola; and many relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two sons, James David and Robert Wayne Wise, one granddaughter, Madison Vardeman, and two brothers, Ricky Comer and Danny Lynn Comer.

Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday at the First Assembly of God Church in Ulysses with Minister Warren Baldwin presiding.

Burial will be in Ulysses Cemetery.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to the Youth Group at the First Assembly of God Church and may be mailed to Grant County Funeral Home, 218 S. Main, Ulysses, KS 67880.

MARY J. TORRES

LEOTI -- Mary J. Torres, died Monday, Jan. 24, 2005, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.

She was born July 1, 1910, to Juan and Justa (Castillo) Janas in West Point, Texas.

She married Lionicio Torres in February of 1933 in Whorton, Texas. He died Feb. 17, 2002.

She was a homemaker. She was a midwife. She did farm work.

She was a member of The Church of God of the Firstborn of Garden City.

Survivors include four sons, Tom Torres, Dimmitt, Texas, Ernest Torres, Leoti, Louis Torres, Garden City, and Roy Torres, Leoti; five daughters, Rosa Llanas, Bloomington, Texas, Sarah Castillo, Snyder, Texas, Pauline Rivera, Garden City, Elida Hernandez, Leoti, and Lupe Rodriguez, Leoti; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; four sisters, Antonia Maldonado, Garden City, Julia Jimaniz, Whorton, Texas, Mary Jimaniz, Beaumont, Texas, and Margaret Landure, Beaumont, Texas; and many relatives and friends.

She was also preceded in death by her parents, four sons, Jose Gomez, Johnny Torres, Frank Torres and Jerry Torres, two daughters, Ophelia Hernandez and Lucia Ornelas, and one grandson, Moses Torres.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at The Church of God of the Firstborn in Garden City with Pastor Juan Janas presiding.

Graveside services will be at 4 p.m. Thursday at the Leoti Cemetery.

Friends may call until 9 p.m. today and from 2 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at The Church of the Firstborn in Garden City.

Memorials are suggested to The Church of the Firstborn of Garden City and may be mailed to Haskell County Funeral Home, Box 607, Sublette, KS 67877.

CLOREAN R. BREEN

Clorean (Rean) Breen, age 91 of Raton, NM and a former Liberal, Kansas area resident, died January 20, 2005 at Miners Colfax medical Center in Raton.

Rean was born September 21, 1913 at her childhood home in Floris, OK to Sidney and Mamie Fincher, Sharp.

She married Charles (Chuck) Breen on December 23, 1935 and enjoyed 57 years of devotion, love and laughter together. Rean graduated from Phillips University in Enid, OK with a language degree in English, French and Spanish and she could still correct other's grammar to the end!

She taught school at the Greenough School northwest of Fogan, OK, where Chuck also taught, coached and served as the superintendent. Throughout their career in education, they took the graduating classes on trips all across the country. Then they bought Rean's uncle's farm in the Blue Bell area east of Liberal, KS. They farmed for 42 years there, as well as in Beaver County, OK. During those years, she and Chuck raised and showed registered Cocker Spaniels, raised Black Angus cattle and cultivated wheat and Milo crops. They also raised two children and were mentors to many others.

Over the years, people of many nationalities and faiths were treated to Rean's fine cooking as guest at the farm.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Jim Cooper of Raton; brother, William R. Sharp and wife, Joanie of the Houston, Texas area; granddaughter, Alisa Cooper of New York City and grandson Timothy Cooper of Dallas, Texas; nephews, Roger Sharp of Boulder, CO, Jim Bush of Woodward, Oklahoma and Bill Niemeir of Norman, Oklahoma; nieces, Susan Nobles of Corpus Christi, Texas, Eddie Jean Long of Clayton, New Mexico, Barbara Sue Ray of Albuquerque, New Mexico and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a son Dennis Michael and her husband Chuck in 1993.

There will be a family graveside service at the Floris Cemetery in Beaver County, Oklahoma, at a later date. Because of Rean's life long commitment to education, in lieu of flowers, the family has suggested that memorials be given to the Dennis Breen Memorial Fund, Seward County Community College, Development Foundation, P.O. Box 1137, Liberal, KS 67905, or a charity of your choice. --

The arrangements for are under the direction of the Yaksich - Long Funeral Home. --

CLARA M. ALFORD

MEADE -- Clara M. Alford, 72, died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2005, in rural Meade County.

She was born Feb. 24, 1932, to Albert Leonard and Mary Marcy (Kizer) Alford in Mishawaka, Ind.

She was a small business owner and newspaper carrier for the Hutchinson News, Wichita Eagle and Dodge City Daily Globe.

She attended the United Methodist Church of Meade.

She enjoyed working crossword puzzles.

Survivors include two brothers, Leonard Alford, Osceola, Ind., and Ray Alford, Tucson, Ariz.; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a special companion, Roy Wasson.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Fidler-Orme-Bachman Chapel in Meade with the Rev. Susan Greene presiding. The casket will remain closed.

Burial will be in the Graceland Cemetery in Meade.

Memorials are suggested to Meade Christmas in the Park or the American Heart Association in care of the funeral home.

LILLIAN AKAGI

ULYSSES -- Lillian Akagi, 73, died Monday, Jan. 24, 2005, at her residence in Ulysses.

She was born Feb. 11, 1931, to Sampei and Toku (Kadoguchi) Kido in Salida, Colo.

She married Genzo Akagi Oct. 3, 1954, in Crowley, Colo. He survives.

She graduated from Crowley (Colo.) High School.

She worked as a homemaker.

She was a past member of a local Home Economics Club as well as the American Legion Auxiliary.

Other survivors include four sons, Mark Akagi, Grantville, Donald Akagi, Fort Worth, Texas, Brett Akagi, Maple Grove, Minn., and Greg Akagi, Lawrence; five grandchildren; four brothers Joe Wyeno and Harry Wyeno, both of Olney Springs, Colo., Mike Kido, Greeley, Colo., and Hank Wyeno, Littleton, Colo.; four sisters, Tee Kora, Notus, Idaho, May Hiraga, Sacramento, Calif., Dottie Adams, Westminster, Colo., and May Clermont, St. Louis; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Frank Kido, and her step father, George Gosaku Wyeno.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Country View Baptist Church in Ulysses with the Rev. Sam Bynum presiding. --

Burial will be in Ulysses Cemetery.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Garnand Funeral Home of Ulysses.

Memorials are suggested to the American Legion Auxiliary or donors' choice in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 405 W. Grant, Ulysses, KS 67880.
