JIMMY D. SMITH

Jimmy D. Smith, 54, died Monday, Feb. 28, 2005, at his home in Liberal.

He was born Jan. 14, 1951, to Dillard C. and Mary Lee Owens Smith in Liberal.

He graduated from Liberal High School in 1969.

He worked at various businesses in Liberal.

Survivors include by one son, Shannon Smith, Liberal, three grandchildren and his father.

He was preceded in death by his mother and one brother, Larry Pierce.

Cremation has taken place and there are no memorial services planned at this time.

ROSALINE STEGMAN

Rosaline Stegman, 84, died Saturday, March 12, 2005, at Liberal Good Samaritan Center.

She was born Sept. 19, 1920, to Edward and Kathryn (Wilkins) Polsom at Rozel.

She married Robert Leo Stegman Dec. 8, 1951 in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. He died Oct. 25, 1988.

She attended school in Sugar Notch, Pa.

She was a beautician and a switch board operator at Hotel Sterling in Wilkes-Barre, Penn.

She was an avid basketball fan, and she enjoyed writing for the Offerle News.

She was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church in Liberal and the St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Offerle.

Survivors include one son, Brian Stegman and wife Betty, Offerle; one daughter, Dona Obholz and husband John, Liberal; five grandchildren, Ashley Chamberlain, Andy Stegman, Adam Stegman, Allen Stegman and Johnny Obholz; two step-grandchildren, Jason Obholz and Brian Obholz; and four step-great-grandchildren, Dylan Fisher, Devon Obholz, Zach Obholz and Leslie Obholz.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one infant brother; and two sisters, Eleanor Whitebread and Pauline Wallace.

Vigil services will be 6:30 p.m. Monday at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Liberal with Father Mike McAndrews presiding. Vigil services will be 7 p.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Offerle with Father Nicanor Freangco presiding.

Funeral mass will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Offerle with Father Nicanor Freangco presiding.

Burial will be at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Offerle.

Friends may call 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today at Kitch-Brenneman Funeral Home and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday at McKillip Memorial Funeral Home in Kinsley.

Memorials are suggested to Liberal Good Samaritan Center or St. Nicholas School Endowment Fund in care of the funeral homes.

PAT CAFFEY

FORT HOOD, Texas -- Pat Caffey, 66, died Friday March 11, 2005, in Fort Hood, Texas.

She was born Feb. 17, 1939, to Harry T. and Peggy Dinkle Bethel in Satanta.

She married Jimmie D. Caffey May 18, 1955, at Hereford, Texas. He survives.

She attended school in Satanta, Liberal and Amarillo, Texas.

She operated a child day care in her home for many years until she retired in 1999.

She was a member of Dulcimer Club in Liberal and Kansas State Home Care Association.

She was a member of Bethel Church of God in Forgan, Okla.

Other survivors include two sons, Mark Caffey and wife Amy, Fort Hood, Texas, and Jimmie Caffey and wife Mary Ann, Liberal; two daughters, Deana Runte and husband Kevin, Omaha, Neb., and Rhonda Farris and husband Jonathan, Liberal; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one brother, Garland Bethel, Amarillo, Texas; and one sister, Phyllis Thornton and husband Jack, Columbus, Ohio.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Fred and Dean Bethel; and one son, Troy L. Caffey.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at First Church of God in Liberal, with the Rev. Stanley Lehnert presiding.

Burial will be in the Liberal Cemetery.

Friends may call 4 to 8 p.m. Monday and 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Miller Mortuary.

Memorials are suggested to Bethel Church of God or American Heart Association in care of the mortuary.

IDA BESSIE CHAFFIN

Ida Bessie Chaffin, 104, died Monday March 14, 2005, at Southwest Medical Center.

She was born Nov. 13, 1900, to Benjamin and Ida Jane (Richardson) Packer in Newton.

She married George Washington Chaffin in 1919 in Guymon, Okla. He died April 18, 1975.

She attended Pleasant Valley School near Woods.

She was a homemaker.

She was a member of First Bapist Church of Liberal and was formerly a member of Philathea and IXL Sunday School Classes and later the MacArthur Class.

Her hobbies included sewing, especially sun bonnets and quilts, and scrap booking.

Survivors include two sons, Frank Chaffin and wife Maxine, Stillwater, Okla., and Emery Chaffin and wife Miriam, Liberal; two daughters, Ida Bess LeFevre, Bentonville, Ark., and Paula Ann Tournade, Liberal; 11 grandchildren, Jim LeFevre and wife Andrea, Jennie Cooper and husband J.D., Stanley Chaffin, Franklin Chaffin and wife Pamela, Billy Chaffin and wife Patricia, Janine Stewart and husband Ronald, John Chaffin and wife Laura, Robert Chaffin and wife Robin, Elizabeth Gant and husband Robert, David Tournade and Susan Parker; 20 great-grandchildren and 14 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Paul, Eli and Robert Packer.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church with the Rev. David Bagwell presiding.

Burial will follow at Liberal Cemetery.

Visitation will be 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday and 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at Kitch-Brenneman Funeral Home.

Memorials are suggested to First Baptist Church or Alzheimer Association in care of Kitch-Brenneman Funeral Home 1212 West Second Street Liberal, KS 67901.

GLORIA W. REED

SANGER, Texas -- Gloria Wanda Reed, 73, died Saturday, March 12, 2005, in Denton, Texas.

She was born Dec. 6, 1931, to James Wylie "Buster" and Buena Berta (Browning) Thomas.

She married James F. Reed Sr. June 9, 1950, in Orange, Calif. He survives.

She was a homemaker.

She was a member of Grace Bible Church.

Other survivors include one son, James F. Reed Jr., Liberal; two daughters, Candice L. Atchison, Granbury, Texas, and Connie Wylie, Dallas; nine grandchildren; two brothers, Harvey Wendell Thomas, Sanger, Texas, and James Thomas, Lawton, Okla.; four sisters, Jessie Ashby-Bonds, Rae "Bunny" McWhorter, Rachel Lilly and Sandra Bowles, all of Sanger, Texas.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one son, Rock A. Reed.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Gribble Springs Baptist Church with John Hardison presiding.

WILLARD V. KIRKLAND

HUGOTON -- Willard Vaughn Kirkland, 89, died March 24, 2005, at Pioneer Manor in Hugoton.

He was Born April 13, 1915, to Frank and Ida (Parker) Kirkland in Flippin, Ark.

He was a welder for Panhandle Eastern Corp.

He married Lela Puckett Jan. 12, 1935, in Holdenville, Okla. She survives.

He attended Hugoton Baptist Church.

He was a member of the Hugoton Masonic Lodge.

His hobbies included square dancing, playing cards, and watching his grandchildren's sporting events.

Other survivors include one son, Ronald Kirkland, Tuscola, Ill.; one daughter, Peggy Knier, Hugoton; eight grandchildren, Donnie Knier Jr., David Knier, Steve Kirkland, Tammy Woff, Tracy Graham, Lora Day and Jeremy Stucky; and 16 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son, Wendell Ray Kirkland; one granddaughter, Denise Leonard; two brothers, Wallace Kirkland and Lois Kirkland; and two sisters, Thelma Kirkland and Unita Kirkland.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Hugoton Baptist Church with the Rev. Steve Bailey presiding.

Burial will be in the Hugoton Cemetery.

Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Saturday and 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Garnand Funeral Home.

Memorials are suggested to Hugoton Baptist Church in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 423 South Main Street, Hugoton, KS 67951.
