RICHARD L. AKERS

ELKHART -- Richard L. Akers, 91, died Sunday, April 3, 2005, at St. Johns Rest Home in Victoria.

He was born Dec. 25, 1913, to the Rev. M.M. and Ethel (White) Akers in Elkhart.

He married Bernice Blanche Peters on June 2, 1935, south of Liberal. She died March 7, 2000.

He managed the Burr Retail Store in Liberal, the J.M. Maracle Department Store in Elkhart, and opened Pioneer Men's Store.

His hobbies included flying.

Survivors include two sons, Richard "Dick" Leon Akers and wife Sally, Elkhart, and Jerold "Jerry" Eugene Akers, Hays; five grandchildren, Tim Akers, Wamego, Steven Akers, Elkhart, Michael Akers and wife Tamara, Murfreesboro, Tenn., Scott Akers and wife Heather, Dallas, and Amy Kathleen Akers, Garden City; three great-grandchildren, Drew, Eirland and Eden; one sister, Arlene Mauch, Anderson, Ind.; one sister-in-law, Pearl Akers, Lake Charles, La.; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

He was also preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Al and Don; and two sisters, Fannie and Nellie.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at First Church of God in Elkhart with the Rev. Ron Crosley and Pastor Jimmy Cole presiding.

Burial will follow in Elkhart Cemetery.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Garnand Funeral Home in Elkhart.

Memorials are suggested to Morton County Historical Society in care of Garnand Funeral Home, P.O. Box 854, Elkhart, KS, 67950.

ETHEL YOUNG

MOSCOW -- Ethel "Irene" Young, 87, died Monday, March 28, 2005, at her son's residence in California.

She was born July 3, 1917, to Samuel and Ethel Margurite (McGraw) Bailey at Warren, Ariz.

She married Charles Alan Young Sr. on Jan. 23, 1938, in Las Vegas.

She was a homemaker.

Survivors include three sons, Charles Alan Jr. and wife Betty, Orange, Calif., Wayne Datson Young and wife Wendy, Redding, Calif., and Larry Franklin Young and wife Nancy, Anderson, Calif.; two sisters, Betty Jones, Salem, Ore., and Iadada Bulling, Bull Head City, Ariz.; 16 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; 15 great-great-grandchildren; and many relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at First Baptist Church in Satanta with Pastor Randy Dirrim presiding.

Burial will be in Young Cemetery near Satanta.

Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Haskell County Funeral Home in Sublette.

MARY A. McCAULEY

ULYSSES -- Mary Alice McCauley, 72, died March 2, 2005, at Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock, Texas.

She was born April 10, 1932, to Simon and Julia (Cortez) Maldonado at Alice, Texas.

She married Clarence Willet McCauley. He preceded her in death.

She was a homemaker.

She was a member of Ulysses Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses.

Survivors include two sons, James Nolan McCauley, Denver, and Bruce Willard McCauley, New Mexico; three grandchildren; one brother, Sammy Maldonado, Stafford; five sisters, Minnie Hagerman, Ulysses, Sarah McCauley, Casa Grande, Ariz., Yolanda Ochoa, Grandbury, Texas, Christina Kellogg, Washington, and Elizabeth Smith, Fort Worth, Texas; and many relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 16, at Jehovah Witnesses Kingdom Hall in Ulysses.

There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place.

E. MARIE SANTALA

SATANTA -- E. Marie Santala, 77, died Tuesday, April 19, 2005, at Satanta District Hospital.

She was born Nov. 10, 1927, to Charles and Edna Bertha (Spence) Moody in Satanta.

She was raised from the age of eight by Myrtle and Charles Leslie of Satanta.

She married Eldred Santala on Jan. 27, 1945, in Sublette. He died April 5, 2004.

She was a homemaker and partner with her husband on the farm.

She was a member of United Methodist Church in Satanta.

Her hobbies include quilting and hooking rugs, ceramics, gardening and raising roses.

Survivors include three sons, Steven A. Santala and wife Lynne, Satanta, Michael R. Santala and wife Sally, Flagler, Colo., Darrel E. Santala and wife Connie, Marysville, Wash.; one daughter, Charlotte J. Thomas and husband Marvin, Bluffdale, Utah; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Robert Moody and wife Barbara, Sublette, and Charles Moody, Ashville, Ohio; one sister, Janny Gail Potter, Enid, Okla.; and many other relatives and friends.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Verl and Richard Moody; and two sisters, Dorothy Simpson and Fern Lemar.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at United Methodist Church of Satanta with the Rev. Jeff Miller presiding.

Burial will be in Dudley Township Cemetery in Satanta.

Friends may call until 8 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Haskell County Funeral Home.

Memorials are suggested to Southeast Colorado Long Term Care Center in Springfield, Colo., in memory of Marie and Eldred Santala, in care of Shopping Stop True Value in Satanta or Haskell County Funeral Home, Box 607, Sublette, KS 67877.

MABEL KOEHN

MONTEZUMA -- Mabel Koehn, 97, died Tuesday, April 19, 2005, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.

She was born Jan. 16, 1908, to Ben D. and Susie (Unruh) Schmidt at Galva.

She married Ben H. Koehn on May 11, 1930, at Montezuma. He died on Dec. 5, 1989.

She was a homemaker.

She was a member of Salem Mennonite Church of Copeland.

Survivors include five sons, Ervie Koehn and wife Helen, Hartley, Texas, Dee Wayne Koehn and wife Deloris, Brookston, Texas, Verlin Koehn and wife Jeanie, Dalhart, Texas, Marvin Koehn and wife June, Ingalls, and Lee Koehn and wife Susie, Mesa, Wash.; five daughters, Inez Koehn, Montezuma, Maurene Unruh and husband Norman, Macon, Miss., Lorena Koehn, Montezuma, Anna Le Koehn and husband Arthur, Gentry, Ark., and Vera Mae Wiebe and husband Melvin, Almena, Wis.; 34 grandchildren; 52 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; five brothers, Elmer Schmidt, Edwin Schmidt, Harry Schmidt, John Schmidt and Ben Schmidt, all of Montezuma; four sisters, Hannah Koehn, Montezuma, Luella Harms, Montezuma, Elizabeth Koehn, Montezuma, Irene Koehn and husband Norman, Victoria, Texas; one sister-in-law, Frances Schmidt, Montezuma; and many other relatives and friends.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; one granddaughter, Sharis Dawn Koehn; one great-granddaughter, Jerri Rae Koehn; one brother, Jesse Schmidt; and two sisters, Leona Yost and Dessie Koehn.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Salem Mennonite Church of Copeland with Ministers Steve Unruh, Verle Koehn and Donald Koehn presiding.

Burial will be in Salem Mennonite Church Cemetery in Copeland.

Friends may call until 8 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday at Montezuma Funeral Home.

JOSEPHINE PACKARD

HUGOTON -- Josephine "Jo" Packard, 86, died Tuesday, April 19, 2005, at Pioneer Manor Nursing Home in Hugoton.

She was born Jan. 6, 1919, to Clifford and Avis (Allender) Delano at Dombie, Okla.

She married Roy A. Packard in Sept. of 1962, at Raton, N.M. He died Nov. 29, 2004.

She was a homemaker. She worked for Porter Drug Store, was a bus driver, worked for the Dart In and was a dispatcher for the sheriff's office.

Survivors include one son, Ronnie Dean Bolinger and wife Leslie, Longmont, Colo.; one step daughter, Janice Johnson and husband Tom, Payette, Ind.; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Avis January and husband Dutch, Liberal, and Elda Nichols, Liberal; and many relatives and friends.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; one son, Dennis Bolinger; one brother, Clifford Delano, and three sisters, Lela Stewart, Fern Nickels and Sybil Hall.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday Paul's Funeral Home in Hugoton with Minister Keith Peachey presiding.

Burial will be in Hugoton Cemetery.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday at Paul's Funeral Home.

Memorials are suggested to American Heart Fund in care of Paul's Funeral Home, Box 236, Hugoton, KS 67951.
