Grace Ivy Weese

Graveside service for Grace Ivy Weese, 80, was to be 3 p.m. today in Scott County Cemetery, Scott City, with the Rev. Arlen Ankle officiating.

Mrs. Weese died Friday, March 3, 2000, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.

She was born June 29, 1919, at Gove, the daughter of John and Cora (Snyder) Smith. A homemaker, she had been a resident of Garden City since 1975, moving from Scott City.

She is survived by three sons, Dale Weese, Garden City, Kenneth Ray Weese, Aumsville, Ore., and Bradley J. Hellman, Wichita; a daughter, Avis Marie McConnell, Dallas; four brothers, Elmer Smith, Weskan, Roy Smith, Hutchinson, Frank Smith, Pleasanton, and Charles "Chuck" Smith, Scott City; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by six brothers and one sister.

Memorials are suggested to Terrace Garden Care Center, in care of Price & Sons Funeral Home, 620 N. Main St.

M. Lamar Van Pelt

SCOTT CITY -- M. Lamar Van Pelt, 84, died Saturday, March 4, 2000, at Scott County Hospital in Scott City.

He was born July 12, 1915, at Shields, the son of Clair James and Eunice Rachel (James) Van Pelt.

A Scott City resident since 1950, moving from Dighton, he worked at Van Antwerp's Clothing Store in Scott City for about 40 years, retiring in 1981 as co-owner with Everett Norman. He was a member of the VIP Center and the Scott Community Golf Course, both at Scott City.

On June 10, 1945, he married Mildred E. Lemen at Dighton. She survives. He is also survived by two sons, Vance Van Pelt, Scott City, and David Van Pelt, Columbia, Md.; and two sisters, Mildred Nash, Wichita, and Marie Crist, Garden City. He was preceded in death by a sister, Ruth Harris; and a brother, Estel Van Pelt.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City, with the Rev. Duane Kessler officiating. Burial will be in Scott County Cemetery, Scott City.

Visitation hours are from 3 to 9 tonight and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the VIP Center, in care of the funeral home.

Leo M. Specht

Funeral for Leo M. Specht, 82, a longtime resident of Lamar, Colo., will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Lamar Missionary Baptist Church, with the Rev. John Morrison officiating. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery, Lamar.

Mr. Specht, who farmed for many years in the Garden City area, died Saturday, March 4, 2000, at Memorial Hospital in Colorado Springs, Colo.

He was born March 18, 1917, at Meade, the son of Gustavas A. "Gus" and Lota May (Haskins) Specht.

He is survived by his wife, Helen; his children, Madge Purvis, Weskan, Connie Adame, Barbara Notestine, Ken Specht and Dale Specht, all of Lamar, Leo Max Specht, Sheridan Lake, Colo., David Specht, Wichita, Lyle Specht, Brandon, Colo., and Janice McElroy, Gill, Colo.; 30 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; five brothers, Vincent Specht and Gale Specht, both of Seal Beach, Calif., Howard Specht, Yucaipa, Calif., Max Specht, Lompoc, Calif., and Gordon Specht, Lamar; and a sister, Roberta Isetts, Divide, Colo. He was preceded in death by infant twin grandsons.

Visitation hours are until 7 tonight at Peacock-Wood Funeral Home & Monument Co., Lamar. Memorials are suggested to the Ronald McDonald House in Colorado Springs or to the American Cancer Society, both in care of the funeral home, 209 S. Fourth St., Lamar, CO 81052.

L.L. 'Buss' Solze

Funeral for L.L. "Buss" Solze, 91, will be 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at First Christian Church, Garden City, with the Rev. Donald Carter officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City, with Masonic graveside rites conducted.

Mr. Solze died Saturday, March 4, 2000, at his home in Garden City.

He was born Oct. 21, 1908, at St. John, the son of Edward Arthur and Lena Susan (Williams) Solze, and had lived in Garden City since he was 6 months old.

A farmer, he worked as a mechanic for the International Harvester dealer for several years during the winter months. He was a member of First Christian Church, Tyrian Masonic Lodge No. 246 and Friends of the Lee Richardson Zoo, and was a lifetime member of the Elks Lodge, all at Garden City, and also belonged to the Midian Shrine Temple of Wichita.

On Aug. 7, 1929, he married Lola P. Summers at Syracuse. He married Bessie Drussel on March 23, 1960, at Garden City. She died Sept. 10, 1987. On March 26, 1988, he and Lola were remarried in Garden City. She died Oct. 26, 1999. He was also preceded in death by a son, Harold L. Solze; two brothers; and three sisters.

He is survived by a daughter, Sue Britton, Garden City; a daughter-in-law, Barbara K. Solze, a former Garden City resident now living in Colorado Springs, Colo.; a brother, Arthur Solze, Limon, Colo.; two sisters, Ethel Salter and Estella Hate, both of Garden City; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.

Visitation hours are until 9 tonight and from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to church youth groups or the American Heart Association, both in care of the funeral home, 620 N. Main St.

Joseph J. Matza

Vigil service for Joseph J. Matza, 89, was 7:30 p.m. Sunday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City, followed by rosary. Funeral Mass was to be 2 p.m. today at St. Mary Catholic Church, Garden City, with the Rev. Oreste Huerta officiating. Burial was to follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Garden City.

Mr. Matza died Friday, March 3, 2000, at Garden Valley Retirement Village in Garden City.

He was born Nov. 4, 1910, in Russia, the son of Adam and Elizabeth (Savolt) Matza. The family moved to the United States in 1912. He lived with his family in Garden City until moving to Chicago in 1922. He returned to Garden City in 1943.

Mr. Matza worked for McAlister's Lumber Co., retiring in 1963. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and was a former member of the Knights of Columbus and the Fiddlers and Pickers. He enjoyed playing music, playing cards, visiting with people, fishing and playing pool.

On May 9, 1933, he married Barbara Mary Brungardt at Garden City. She survives. Other survivors are four sons, Joseph Matza, Stone Mountain, Ga., James Matza, Las Vegas, Jerome Matza, Wichita, and John Matza, Woodbridge, Va.; four daughters, Louise Peloza and LaVerna Coleman, both of Wichita, Lorraine Rickert, Ellinwood, and Loretta Gilbert, Garden City; 17 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers, two sisters and two grandchildren.

Memorials are suggested to St. Mary Catholic Church or Garden Valley Retirement Village, both in care of the funeral home.

Donald Edward 'Ed' Hoyt

Funeral for Donald Edward "Ed" Hoyt, 71, will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the First United Methodist Church, Garden City, with the Rev. Robert Cousins officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.

Mr. Hoyt died Saturday, March 4, 2000, at Terrace Garden Care Center in Garden City.

He was born July 10, 1928, at Cimarron, the son of Herbert Marcello and Bessie Flora (Bridwell) Hoyt.

A Garden City resident since 1944, moving from Cimarron, he was a retired compressor station operator having worked for 38 years at K N Energy, the former Kansas Nebraska Natural Gas Co.

Mr. Hoyt was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 3124 and Elks Lodge No. 1404, all at Garden City, and Woodmen of the World.

On March 7, 1948, he married Helen Louise Johnson at Garden City. She survives. He is also survived by a son, Jim Edward Hoyt, San Ramon, Calif.; a daughter, Sherry Lynn Hoyt Stalter, Garden City; a grandson; two granddaughters; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by six brothers; three sisters; a nephew; and a granddaughter.

Visitation hours are until 9 tonight at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to the church or the donor's choice, both in care of the funeral home, 620 N. Main St.

Rose C. Ashman

LEOTI -- Funeral for Rose C. Ashman, 91, will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church, Leoti, with the Rev. Rick Woolard officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.

Mrs. Ashman died Friday, March 3, 2000, at Wichita County Long Term Care Unit in Leoti.

She was born July 30, 1908, in Kiowa County, Colo., the daughter of George and Annie (Sanborn) Torgler.

A homemaker, she had been a Leoti resident since 1941. She belonged to First Baptist Church, VFW Auxiliary and Atkinson Senior Citizens Center, all at Leoti.

On June 2, 1923, she married Samuel Ivan Ashman at Ordway, Colo. He died March 18, 1964.

She is survived by a granddaughter; two sisters, Dora Keeland and Myrtle Frankenberger, both of Jackson, Calif.; and a brother, Byron Torgler, Monte Vista, Colo.

Visitation hours are until 9 tonight at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Leoti. Memorials are suggested to Atkinson Senior Citizens Center, in care of the funeral home.
