Harriett F. Vaught

Memorial service for Harriett F. Vaught, 83, of St. Joseph, Mo., will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Caring First Assembly of God Church, St. Joseph. Burial will take place later in Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, Fairfax, Mo.

Mrs. Vaught died Friday, April 14, 2000, at Heartland Regional Medical Center in St. Joseph.

She was born March 15, 1917, at Fairfax, the daughter of Irvin and Cora (Doughty) Senft. She graduated from Fairfax High School and attended Tarkio College.

A resident of St. Joseph since 1956, moving from Fairfax, she was a homemaker and had worked for St. Joseph Convalescent Center. She was active in Keenagers and was assistant teacher for Rainbows at Caring First Assembly of God Church.

Mrs. Vaught was a former member of the Salvation Army Church, where she taught Sunday School, was Home League secretary, and was active with the standing kettles at Christmas and in the League of Mercies. Throughout her life, she helped with various volunteer projects.

She is survived by her husband, Robert I. Vaught, whom she married in 1948; two sons, R. Clayton Vaught, St. Joseph, and L. Mike Vaught, Garden City; a daughter, Ann Ragsdale, St. Joseph; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Visitation hours are from 1 to 2 p.m. Tuesday at the church.

Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel, St. Joseph, is in charge of arrangements.

Sharlene Lynette Miller

SUBLETTE -- Sharlene Lynette Miller, 55, of Sublette, died Friday, April 14, 2000, at Satanta District Hospital, after a sudden illness.

She was born March 26, 1945, at Montezuma, the daughter of Archie and Edna Viola (Friesen) Smith.

On April 16, 1991, she married Jerry L. Miller at Garden City. They moved from Garden City to Sublette in April 1998. A lifetime resident of the area, she was a home health care worker.

She is survived by her husband; a son, Bryce Dirks, Montezuma; a daughter, Kandis Crawford, Lindsborg; three stepsons, Gary Miller, Enterprise, Ala., Kevin Miller, Jacksonville, Fla., and Jerry L. Miller Jr., Garden City; a stepdaughter, Teresa Miller, Colorado Springs, Colo.; her parents, Sublette; a brother, L. Gene Smith, Garden City; five grandchildren; and six stepgrandchildren.

Funeral will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Church of the Nazarene, Meade, with the Rev. Ervey Unruh officiating. Burial will be in Morningside Cemetery, Montezuma.

Visitation hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today, 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at Montezuma Funeral Home. Memorials for the family may be sent in care of the funeral home, Box 421, Montezuma, KS 67867.

Hazel Thompson

HUGOTON -- Funeral for Hazel Thompson, 97, of Hugoton, will be 10 this morning at First Christian Church, Hugoton, with the Rev. Kevin Yoakum officiating. Burial will be in Hugoton Cemetery.

She died Thursday, April 13, 2000, at Ulysses.

Garnand Funeral Home, Hugoton, is in charge of arrangements.

Edward Dwight Bayless

KALVESTA -- Edward Dwight Bayless, 81, of Shawnee, died Thursday, April 13, 2000, at Shawnee Gardens Nursing Center in Shawnee.

Born Aug. 18, 1918, in northeast Gray County near Kalvesta, he was the son of W. Fred and Florence Bayless. He attended Garden City High School and served as a sergeant during World War II in the U.S. Army's 20th Armored Division in Europe.

Mr. Bayless had been a Shawnee resident for a short time, moving from Dodge City. After working for several years as a mechanic for Fairmont Foods, he began working as a mechanic at the newly opened Winter Feed Yard in 1956. He worked there until his retirement at the age of 65 and then continued on a part-time basis until 1997.

On Aug. 14, 1949, he married Wilma Jean Westphal at Kinsley. She died Oct. 9, 1988.

He is survived by a son, Duane Bayless, Shawnee; two daughters, Marsha L. Bayless, Nacogdoches, Texas, and Deanne Kilian, Olathe; a brother, Lacy Bayless, Dodge City; three sisters, Grace Winter, Marie Sullivan and Aielene Dansel, all of Dodge City; and six grandchildren.

Funeral will be 10 a.m. Monday at Burkhart Funeral Chapel, Dodge City, with the Rev. James Hossler officiating. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Dodge City, with full military graveside rites conducted by Howard Gotschall VFW Post No. 1714.

Visitation hours are noon to 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral chapel, with the family receiving friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Memorials are suggested to Dodge City Community College, in care of the funeral chapel, 1901 N. 14th Ave., Dodge City, KS 67801.

Harold 'Jim' West

Memorial service for Harold "Jim" West, 69, of Wichita, will be 3 p.m. Friday, at Cochran Mortuary Chapel of the Roses, Wichita.

Mr. West died Sunday, April 9, 2000.

A former resident of southwest Kansas, he was a sales representative with Thunderbird Technical Sales & Service. He was a member of the Midian Shrine, Wichita Consistory, Sunflower Masonic Lodge No. 86 AF & AM, the Soaring Society of America and the Kansas Soaring Association.

He is survived by his wife, Joyce West, of the home; a daughter, Shurley Alexander, Overland Park; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. His son, James D. West, died Monday, April 10.

Memorials are suggested to the Kansas Soaring Association, in care of the mortuary, 1411 N. Broadway, Wichita, KS 67214-1191.

Andrew Newton Fuqua

HUGOTON -- Funeral for Andrew Newton Fuqua, 62, of Hugoton, will be 2 p.m. Friday at Church of Christ, Hugoton, with the Rev. Lee Skelton officiating. Burial will be in Hugoton Cemetery.

Mr. Fuqua died Monday, April 10, 2000, at Baptist St. Anthony Hospital in Amarillo, Texas.

He was born Oct. 20, 1937, at Spur, Texas, the son of Alfred Newton and Fannie Mae (Howell) Fuqua.

A Hugoton resident for 25 years, moving from Spearman, Texas, he was a cattle rancher. He belonged to Church of Christ, Hugoton.

On Dec. 1, 1957, he married Madalyn Lane Schumann. She survives. He is also survived by two sons, Neal Ross, Hugoton, and Dale Roy, Bakersfield, Calif.; a sister, Alpha Mae Grice, Jayton, Texas; and three grandchildren.

Paul's Funeral Home, Hugoton, is in charge of arrangements.

Nora M. Cole

Funeral for Nora M. Cole, 80, of Garden City, will be 3 p.m. Saturday at McKillip Memorial Chapel, Kinsley, with the Rev. Richmond Graham officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery, Kinsley.

Mrs. Cole died Wednesday, April 12, 2000, at Garden Valley Retirement Village in Garden City.

She was born Dec. 12, 1919, at Rardin, Ill., the daughter of Warren and Bertha (Houdeshell) Jarvis. A homemaker, she was a former resident of Kinsley.

Her first husband, Herbert A. Neufeld, died in May 1958.

On Sept. 7, 1960, she married Paul Cole Jr. at Kinsley. He survives and resides at Strasburg, Colo.

She is also survived by four sons, Herbert Neufeld, Port Charlotte, Fla., Dewey Neufeld, Athens, Texas, Gerald Neufeld, Fort Worth, Texas, and Richard Neufeld, Molakoff, Texas; five daughters, Sharon Martin, Garden City, Linda Manning, Huntley, Ill., Patricia Unruh, Port Charlotte, Pamela Nichols, Dugway, Utah, and Donna McClung, Graford, Texas; a brother, Warrenie Jarvis, Kinsley; 15 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.

Visitation hours are from 9 a.m. until service time Saturday at the funeral chapel. Memorials are suggested to St. Catherine Hospice, in care of the funeral home.
