Edna Swartley
Garden City resident Edna Swartley, 96, died Thursday, May 4, 2000, at Stanton County Long Term Care Unit, Johnson City.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 9, 2000, at the First United Methodist Church of Garden City, the Rev. Janet Hernandez presiding. Burial will be at Valley View Cemetery.
Mrs. Swartley was born Nov. 2, 1903, at Leedey, Okla., the daughter of Forrest L. and Eliza (Ingram) Weast. In earlier years, she worked as a cashier at Penney's Department Store until after her marriage, then she was a homemaker. She belonged to the First United Methodist Church and the First United Methodist Church Women's Circle.
On July 20, 1935, she married Harold Swartley at Garden City. He preceded her in death in 1976.
She is survived by one son, John Swartley, Rogersville, Mo.; a daughter, Carol Anderson, Johnson City; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by five brothers and three sisters.
Friends may call today from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Garnand Funeral Home. Family requests memorials to Stanton County Long Term Care Unit in care of the funeral home.
Andrew E. Larson Sr.
Funeral for Andrew E. Larson Sr., 91, will be 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church, Garden City, with the Rev. Robert Cousins officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.
Mr. Larson died Sunday, May 7, 2000, at his home in Finney County.
He was born June 10, 1908, at Enid, Okla., the son of Andrew E. and Albertha N. (Cook) Larson. He received a bachelor's degree in business administration from Oklahoma University, where he was a member of Alpha Kappa Psi Business School fraternity.
Mr. Larson farmed in Gray, Ford and Finney counties and in 1941 moved to Garden City from Blackwell, Okla.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, a member and past president of the Hearthstone Sunday School class, was a member of the Oklahoma University Alumni Association, Southwest Kansas Royalty Owners Association, Southwest Kansas Irrigators Association and the Kansas Association of Wheat Growers, was a camp commander for the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) of Blackwell and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
On Oct. 1, 1933, he married Jean M. Thompson at Oklahoma City. She survives. He is also survived by a son, Andrew Larson Jr., Garden City; a daughter, Karin M. Henkle, Garden City; three grandsons; three granddaughters; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, four sisters, a son and a grandson.
Visitation hours are until 9 tonight and from 9 a.m. to noon Wednesday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Garden City. The family suggests memorials be given to the church organ fund, in care of the funeral home, 620 N. Main St.
Josephine M. Simon
Vigil service for Josephine M. Simon, 93, will be 7:30 tonight at St. Mary Catholic Church, Garden City, followed by rosary. Funeral Mass will be 1 p.m. Thursday at St. Rose Catholic Church, Mount Vernon. The Rev. James E. Baker will officiate. Burial will be in St. Rose Cemetery, Mount Vernon.
Mrs. Simon died Monday, May 8, 2000, at her home in Garden City.
She was born Aug. 4, 1906, at Andale, the daughter of Anton and Margaret (Engelbrecht) Heimerman. The family moved to Mount Vernon in 1911 and she attended schools there.
On Nov. 25, 1931, she married Roman Simon at Mount Vernon. They moved to Garden City in 1932. A homemaker, Mrs. Simon had also worked as postmistress in Eminence for several years. She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Senior Center, Altar Society and Daughters of Isabella, and was a former member of Christian Mothers. She enjoyed crocheting, sewing, fancy work, cooking and gardening.
Her husband died May 13, 1959. She was also preceded in death by an infant son, six brothers, three sisters and three grandchildren.
She is survived by five sons, Marvin M. Simon, of Lawrence, Thomas R. Simon and Clyde C. Simon, both of Garden City, Gerald R. Simon, Las Vegas, and Harlan R. Simon, Los Angeles; 11 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Visitation hours are until 6 tonight at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to St. Mary Catholic Church or St. Rose Catholic Church, both in care of the funeral home.
Mabel Rome
Vigil service for Mabel Rome, 90, will be 8 p.m. Friday at St. Mary Catholic Church, Garden City. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the church, with the Rev. James E. Baker as celebrant. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Garden City.
Mrs. Rome died Tuesday, May 9, 2000, at Garden Valley Retirement Village in Garden City.
She was born July 5, 1909, at Norton, the daughter of Ferdinand and Henrietta (Laskowski) Eppinger. She attended one-room schools in Norton County and graduated from Norton High School.
She worked as a telephone operator in Norton before marrying Adolph Rome on Aug. 23, 1941, at Norton, advancing to chief operator. Shortly after her marriage, she and her husband moved to Denver where she worked as an operator while her husband served in the military. In 1957, they moved to Finney County where she assisted her husband on the operation of the family farm. They retired and moved into Garden City in 1975.
Mrs. Rome was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and the Bible Study Group. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, her vegetable garden and reading.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by a son, Thomas Rome, Arvada, Colo.; a daughter, Mary Bourne, Edmond, Okla.; and three grandchildren. She was preceded in death by six brothers, Clarence Eppinger, Elmer Eppinger, Jess Eppinger, Ted Eppinger, Harry Eppinger and George Eppinger; and a sister, Minnie Lidkte.
Visitation hours are from 5 to 8 tonight and 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral home.
Donna Renee Murdoff
Donna Renee Murdoff, 38, of Wichita, died Wednesday, May 10, 2000, from injuries suffered in an automobile accident Tuesday evening near Coldwater.
Mrs. Murdoff had worked as a licensed practical nurse for a home health agency.
She is survived by her husband, Tom Murdoff, Wichita; her mother and stepfather, Judy and Charles Coble, Scammon; two sons, Ryan Smith and Adam Dixon, Wichita; two daughters, Amanda Smith and Samantha Murdoff, Wichita; two brothers, Orvial Lundblade, Garden City, and David Coble, Scammon; a sister, Dana Ward, Hillsdale; her grandmothers, Bertha Bennett, Garden City, and Thelma Coble, Pittsburgh; and three grandchildren.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Hillside Funeral Home East, Wichita. Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice.
Jimmy Franklin McCloskey
SATANTA -- Jimmy Franklin McCloskey, 48, died Wednesday, May 10, 2000, at his home in Satanta.
He was born June 7, 1951, at Ulysses, the son of Raymond and Evelyn Virginia (Davis) McCloskey. Mr. McCloskey served during the Vietnam War. He had resided in Satanta since moving there 26 years ago from Morrison, Colo.
He is survived by two daughters, Mellissa Harding, Denver, and Angela McCloskey, Liberal; a brother, Marion "Bud" Whiteis, Golden, Colo.; a sister, Judy Zolinski, Wamego; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Amanda McCloskey.
There will be no visitation or funeral services; cremation has been requested.

Robert M. Johnson
Robert M. Johnson, 82, died Tuesday, May 9, 2000, at Colorado Springs, Colo.
He was born June 16, 1917, at Sioux City, Iowa, to Ed and Alice (Olson) Johnson. He graduated from East High School in Sioux City and from Park College in Chicago.
On Aug. 10, 1941, he married Ann Thornton and lived in Sioux City until he joined the U.S. Air Force during World War II and was stationed in England flying missions over Germany until the end of the war.
He moved to California for a year before moving to Garden City in 1947. He became a member of the Presbyterian Church in 1953.
Mr. Johnson worked for Northwestern Steel and Wichita Building before becoming an agent for New York Life Insurance in 1955. He was a C.L.U. and Life Member of the Million Dollar Round Table. He worked for New York Life for more than 42 years and attained many achievements with the company. In 1997, he and his wife retired to Colorado Springs.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Rex, Colorado Springs, and Mark Randall, Amarillo, Texas; three grandsons; a sister, Florence Montrose, Simpsonville, S.C.; and a brother, William D., Manchester, Iowa. He was preceded in death by a son, James Kent, in 1969; his brother, Frank; and his stepmother, Elsa.
A private family graveside service will be conducted at Valley View Cemetery
in Garden City.
Memorials are suggested to the Presbyterian Church of Garden City or the Boy Scouts of America, Santa Fe Trail Council of Garden City.

Sylvia Lenora Gentele
Funeral for Sylvia Lenora Gentele, 83, was 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Pauls Lutheran Church, Naper, Neb., with the Rev. Brian Goens officiating. Burial was in St. Pauls Lutheran Cemetery.
Mrs. Gentele died Thursday, May 4, 2000, at Terrace Garden Care Center in Garden City.
She was born June 3, 1916, at Wagner, S.D., the daughter of James L. and Christina (Broderson) Misner. A Garden City resident since 1990, moving from Naper, she had worked as a waitress, was a homemaker, and belonged to St. Pauls Lutheran Church of Naper.
On Nov. 3, 1938, she married Julius Gentele at Naper. He died Nov. 3, 1980. She was also preceded in death by two brothers and a sister.
She is survived by a daughter, Karen Williams, Garden City; a sister, Jean Holmes, address unknown; a half brother, LaVerne Misner, McMinnville, Ore.; a sister-in-law, Esther Stahlecker, Omaha, Neb.; a grandson; a granddaughter; and five great-grandchildren.
