James Dee Jennings

HUGOTON -- James Dee Jennings, 48, of Hugoton, died Monday, June 5, 2000, at Stevens County Hospital in Hugoton.

He was born Aug. 12, 1951, at Pueblo, Colo., the son of John Dee and Neva (Coffee) Jennings.

A Hugoton resident for several years, moving from Colorado, Mr. Jennings was a pen rider for Sunbelt Feeders.

He is survived by a son, Jake Jennings, Pueblo; two daughters, Dori Nichols, Pueblo, and Jeana Rodrigues, Pueblo West, Colo.; a sister, Sandy Proctor, Pueblo West; and two grandchildren.

Cremation is planned, with inurnment to follow in Pueblo.

Paul's Funeral Home, Hugoton, is in charge of arrangements.

Dorothy L. Otis

SCOTT CITY -- Graveside service for Dorothy L. Otis, 76, will be 10 a.m. Thursday in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City, with the Rev. Jeff Arnold officiating.

Mrs. Otis died Monday, June 5, 2000, at her home in Scott City.

She was born Feb. 5, 1924, at Herington, the daughter of Daniel and Lydia (Miller) Friesen.

A Garden City resident until moving to Wichita in 1971, she had resided in Scott City since 1989. Retired from retail sales, she was a homemaker and a member of First Christian Church of Dodge City.

On July 31, 1943, she married Bobby M. Otis at Louisville, Ky. He died June 8, 1971, at Garden City. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Wilbur Friesen and Merlin Friesen; and two sisters, Oretta Friesen and Helen Bosh.

She is survived by a son, Kelly M. Otis, Wichita; two daughters, Jo Lynne Smith, Galt, Calif., and Linda S. Kuhn, Scott City; three brothers, Daniel Friesen, Marlton, N.J., Glen Friesen, Newkirk, Okla., and Gary Friesen, Omaha, Neb.; two sisters, Mereda Taylor, Topeka, and Charlene Schubert, Lake Sherwood, Mo.; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Memorials are suggested to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, 2016 N. Amidon St., Wichita, KS 67203.

Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City, is in charge of arrangements.

Herman C. Snodgrass

ULYSSES -- Herman C. Snodgrass, 94, a former area resident, died Monday, June 5, 2000, at Arlington, Texas.

He was born Feb. 23, 1906, at Horace, the son of James C. and Jenni Lenora (Holmes) Snodgrass. He attended schools in Horace and Tribune.

Employed by the State Highway Department for many years, Mr. Snodgrass lived in Garden City as well as other western Kansas towns. He also worked for the Missouri Pacific Railroad as a fireman for a few years before returning to Greeley County where he opened Snodgrass Butane Propane Co. His later years were spent in Ulysses, where he was employed by Popejoy Construction Co. and Ulysses Co-op.

On Dec. 31, 1927, he married Ruth Alta Black. She died Aug. 5, 1990. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Duward Snodgrass; and a sister, Alice Bethel.

He is survived by a daughter, Marcia Rober, Arlington; two grandsons; a granddaughter; and a great-granddaughter.

Funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Garnand Funeral Home Chapel, Ulysses, with the Rev. Bill Harrold officiating. Graveside service will be 4 p.m. CST Saturday in Greeley County Cemetery, Tribune.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Shelton Memorial Christian Church or the Grant County Senior Center, both in care of the funeral home, 405 W. Grant St., Ulysses, KS 67880.

Mary Lou Wainwright

Funeral for Mary Lou Wainwright, 75, of Alta Vista, was to be 2 p.m. today at Kendall Funeral Home, Council Grove, with burial to follow in Alta Vista Cemetery.

Mrs. Wainwright died Sunday, June 4, 2000, at Morris County Hospital in Council Grove.

She was born June 4, 1925, at Alta Vista, the daughter of Jack and Alice (Strom) Ziegler.

Mrs. Wainwright attended Simpson United Methodist Church at Alta Vista, enjoyed working in her flower garden, and enjoyed attending school events at Council Grove and Alta Vista.

On April 29, 1944, she married Edgar Wainwright at Alta Vista. He survives. She is also survived by six sons, David Wainwright, Lake Jackson, Texas, Dennis Wainwright, Shawnee, Don Wainwright, Manhattan, Dale Wainwright, Garden City, Dean Wainwright, Wichita, and Darren Wainwright, Overland Park; a sister, Helen McDiffett, Alta Vista; a brother, Virgil Ziegler, Alta Vista; and seven grandchildren.

Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association, in care of the funeral chapel, 102 N. Mission St., Council Grove, KS 66846.

Sue Wilmot

LAKIN -- Sue Wilmot, 88, died Monday, May 22, 2000, at High Plains Retirement Village in Lakin.

She was born Sept. 15, 1911, at Cuba, Ill., the daughter of Edd and Ann Sophia (Mohr) Strode. When she was young, the family moved to Lakin where she attended school.

She and Lyman Alva Wilmot were married Jan. 15, 1930, at Lakin. They moved to the Kansas City area after World War II ended in the 1940s. While in Kansas City, Mrs. Wilmot worked as a seamstress for a clothing manufacturer. Later, after retirement in the 1970s, they returned to Lakin where she continued to do her sewing.

In addition to her sewing interests, Mrs. Wilmot enjoyed puzzle books and watching people. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Lakin.

Her husband died Jan. 16, 1995. She was also preceded in death by five sisters and three brothers.

She is survived by a brother, Theodore "Ted" Gerritzen, Lakin; two sisters, Fern Combs, Emporia, and Sarah Elizabeth Doyle, Litchfield Park, Ariz.; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral will be 3 p.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church, Lakin, with the Rev. Juanita Wiseman officiating. Mrs. Wilmot's body was donated to the University of Kansas Medical Center per her wishes. A private family burial will take place at a later date.

There will be no visitation. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of Garnand Funeral Home, Lakin.

Josephine V. Martinez

Vigil service for Josephine V. Martinez, 68, will be 8 tonight at St. Mary Catholic Church, Garden City. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the church, with the Rev. James E. Baker officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.

Mrs. Martinez died Saturday, June 3, 2000, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.

She was born Feb. 29, 1932, at Copeland, the daughter of I.G. and Josephine (Mesa) Valenzuela. She grew up in Copeland and attended schools there before moving with her family to Garden City during her high school years. She graduated from Garden City High School.

A homemaker, Mrs. Martinez also worked for more than 29 years in the food service department for USD 457. She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and the Twins Mothers Club, and enjoyed cooking, yard work, gardening and spending time with her grandchildren.

On Oct. 3, 1953, she married I.R. Martinez at Garden City. He survives. Other survivors are a son, Orlando Martinez, Wichita; three daughters, Belinda Perez, and twins Amelia C. Romo and Alesia Martinez, all of Garden City; her father, Garden City; a brother, Carlos Valenzuela, Denver; six sisters, Mary Esther Martinez and Dora Ramos, both of San Antonio, Hope Garcia, Houston, Elvira Crocker, Chevy Chase, Md., Ana Marie Valenzuela, Menlo Park, Calif., and Connie Dean, Wichita; and five grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her mother and five brothers.

There will be no visitation. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City.

Robert L. 'Bob' Long

Robert L. "Bob" Long, 69, died Thursday, June 1, 2000, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.

He was born July 25, 1930, at Garden City, the son of Thomas Leo and Iva Mae (Gann) Long.

A lifetime Garden City resident, he attended Garden City schools. After serving in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, he returned to Garden City.

Mr. Long worked for more than 15 years at Century Refinery. He then worked as a parts manager for the Finney County Road Department, retiring in 1995.

He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and a charter member of the Eagles Lodge. He enjoyed yard work, flowers, hunting, fishing, and feeding birds and squirrels.

On May 18, 1977, he married Virginia Wade at Garden City. She survives. Other survivors are three stepsons, Michael Wade and David Wade, both of Garden City, and Jeff Wade, Wichita; two brothers, Charles W. Long and Raymond D. Long, both of Garden City; five sisters, Loretta C. Staley, Betty E. Towles, Louise M. Long, Nora A. Brown and Joan V. Livingston, all of Garden City; one granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Edgar Leo Long.

Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Mary Catholic Church, Garden City, with the Revs. James E. Baker and Jose Mangulabnan Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City, with military graveside rites conducted by the Garden City Area Veterans Honor Guard.

Visitation hours are from noon to 8 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to Friends of Lee Richardson Zoo or the Garden City Sunrisers Kiwanis Flag Program, all in care of the funeral home.
