Janice Ann Lisle

ULYSSES -- Janice Ann Lisle, 66, of Ulysses, died Saturday, July 15, 2000, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus, Wichita.

She was born March 9, 1934, at Preston, Minn., the daughter of Walter A. and Viva L. Christy.

Mrs. Lisle was retired after working as a dispatcher for the Grant County Sheriff's Office.

She is survived by a son, Jeffrey Alan Fowler, Ulysses; two daughters, Catherine Roxanne Anderson, Ulysses, and Melissa Renee Gantney, Covina, Calif.; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Memorial service will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Shelton Memorial Christian Church, Ulysses, with the Rev. Bill Harold officiating.

Cochran Mortuary, Wichita, is in charge of arrangements. Memorials are suggested to the Grant County Library, 215 E. Grant St., Ulysses, KS 67880.

Robert Joseph 'Rob' Hensen

Memorial service for Robert Joseph "Rob" Hensen, 44, of Castle Rock, Colo., will be 1 p.m. Friday at New Hope Presbyterian Church, Castle Rock, with the Rev. Russ Kane officiating.

Mr. Hensen died Tuesday, July 18, 2000, at Swedish Medical Center in Englewood, Colo.

He was born Nov. 21, 1955, at Topeka, the son of Donald and Dorothy (McEvoy) Hensen.

A resident of Castle Rock for six years, Mr. Hensen was a sales representative for Eason Horticultural Resources Inc. He was a member of New Hope Presbyterian Church, where he served as an elder and was a choir member, and was the Cub Scout leader for Troop Pack No. 261 South Elementary Chapter. He enjoyed being a volunteer scoring observer for the International Golf Tournament at Castle Pines Golf Club, enjoyed fly fishing and golf, and was an avid sports fan, especially of the Broncos.

On March 25, 1995, he married Teri Lynne Crook, a former Garden City resident, at Castle Rock. She survives. He is also survived by a son, Tanner James Hensen, and a daughter, Audrae Lynne Hensen, both of the home; his parents, Shenandoah, Iowa; his grandfather, Jesse McEvoy, North Platte, Neb.; four brothers, Jesse Hensen, Jefferson, Ohio, Mace Hensen, Burlington, Iowa, Lance Hensen and Cory Hensen, both of Shenandoah; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorials are suggested to the Rob Hensen Memorial Education Fund, in care of First Bank of Douglas County, P.O. Box 1300, Castle Rock, CO 80104 or to the American Cancer Society, Colorado Division, 2255 S. Oneida, Denver, CO 80224.

Andrews Caldwell Gibson Funeral Home, Castle Rock, is in charge of arrangements.

Rosie Pearl Burchett

Rosie Pearl Burchett, 61, of Lakin, died Wednesday, July 19, 2000, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.

Born Feb. 18, 1939, at Tribune, she was the daughter of Archie and Mary (Caverty) Folsom. She attended schools in Tribune.

She moved to Garden City in the late 1950s and lived in Colorado for several years before returning to Garden City in 1985 where she lived until moving recently to Lakin.

A homemaker, Mrs. Burchett also worked for many years as a credit manager for McKensie Furniture Co. She enjoyed playing bingo, reading, western movies and Elvis Presley.

In 1956, she married Paul Black at Tribune. In 1961, she married Frank Burchett at La Junta, Colo. He died in 1996.

She is survived by two sons, Frank Burchett, Wichita Falls, Texas, and Blue Burchett, Garden City; two daughters, Mary Lemm and Lisa Burchett, both of Lakin; three brothers, Clarence Folsom, Valdosta, Ga., Robert Folsom, Hayden, Idaho, and Sherman Folsom, Tribune; a sister, Floretta Ottstat, Tribune; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

There will be no visitation. A private family memorial service and burial will take place later.

Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City, is in charge of arrangements.

C.J. Merrigan

INGALLS -- C.J. Merrigan, 89, of Sherman Oaks, Calif., died Monday, July 17, 2000, at Glendale (Calif.) Adventist Medical Center.

He was born Jan. 22, 1911, at Clyde, Mo., the son of Clarence Joseph and Anna Helen (Graham) Merrigan Sr.

He graduated from Northwest Missouri State Teacher's College in Maryville, Mo., and from law school at The University of Missouri at Kansas. He taught American history and literature in St. Louis.

A California resident since 1976, moving from Kansas City, Mr. Merrigan was a retired railroad worker, a history teacher and was an attorney practicing insurance law at Kansas City for several years.

Mr. Merrigan served in the U.S. Army during World War II with the 90th Infantry Division landing at Utah Beach, fighting at the Battle of the Bulge, entering Czechoslovakia and being awarded five Bronze Stars.

On Feb. 24, 1942, he married Mary Catherine Kramer at Kansas City, Mo. She died June 30, 1994. He was also preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters.

He is survived by a daughter, Niki Merrigan, Glendale; and a granddaughter.

Vigil service will be 7 p.m. Monday at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, Ingalls. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the church, with the Rev. Joseph Bahr officiating. Burial will be in Greencrest Memorial Gardens, Dodge City.

Visitation hours are from 1 to 5 p.m. Monday at Burkhart's Gray County Funeral Chapel, Cimarron, and from 6 to 7 p.m. Monday at the church. Memorials are suggested to the Dodge City Public Library, in care of the funeral chapel.

Sophie Mae Koehn

SUBLETTE -- Sophie Mae Koehn, 90, of rural Sublette, died Sunday, July 23, 2000, at Bethel Home Inc., Montezuma, where she had been a resident since Feb. 21, 2000.

She was born Dec. 27, 1909, at Canton, the daughter of John and Carrie (Unruh) Giesel.

On April 20, 1930, she married Jonas E. Koehn at Galva. In 1943, they moved from McPherson County to rural Sublette where they farmed. He died Sept. 6, 1999. She was also preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Freeman Giesel and Nathan Giesel; three sisters, Mornie Unruh, Mabel Ratzlaff and Elma Koehn; and a grandson.

A homemaker, Mrs. Koehn was a member of Salem Mennonite Church at Copeland.

She is survived by five sons, Granville Koehn, Marienthal, John Koehn, Andy Koehn and Emery Koehn, all of Sublette, and Dennis Koehn, Texline, Texas; three daughters, Jul Nightengale, Center, Colo., Juanita Ensz, Texline, and Jane Nikkel, Pincher Creek, Alberta, Canada; a brother-in-law, Alfred Koehn, Scott City; 25 grandchildren; and 34 great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Salem Mennonite Church, Copeland. Sam Unruh Jr., Steve Unruh and Stan Smith, ministers, will officiate. Burial will be in Salem Mennonite Cemetery, Copeland.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday at Haskell County Funeral Home, Sublette. Memorials are suggested to Bethel Home Inc., in care of the funeral home, Box 607, Sublette, KS 67877.

Howard Hardy

Funeral for Howard Hardy, 83, of Beach, N.D., and formerly of Garden City, was 10 a.m. MDT Saturday at St. John's Catholic Church, Beach. A prayer service took place at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the church.

Mr. Hardy died Tuesday, July 18, 2000, in a Fargo (N.D.) hospital.

He was born May 26, 1917, in Garner Township, Golden Valley County, N.D., to James F. and Mary W. Hardy.

On Oct. 26, 1938, he married Kathryn Gilman at Bismarck, N.D. He worked for Gerard Mugglie in the Gamble Store from 1936 to 1939, then at Gilman Oil Co. and Beacon Oil from 1939 to 1942. He and his wife started farming in 1942.

Mr. Hardy helped organize and was one of the first supervisors of the Golden Valley Soil Conservation District, serving from 1948 to 1954. A member of the Beach School Board, he served as president of the board from 1955 to 1960, and from 1966 to 1972.

He also helped organize and was the first president of Golden Valley County Farm Bureau, serving from 1955 to 1959, and was a member of Beach Co-op Grain Company Board from 1958 to 1962. In 1956, he was appointed to a 10-man Agriculture Advisory Committee to the National Republican Party. He was then appointed to the North Dakota Wheat Commission in 1959 and served until 1961.

The next few years took the Hardys from Beach to Garden City, where he joined the staff of Great Plains Wheat Inc., now known as U.S. Wheat Associates. In 1961, he was elected vice-president of the company and, in 1963, was elected president. He held this position until 1966, when he resigned to return to full-time farming at Beach.

While with Great Plains Wheat, he traveled to Europe, South America, Japan, Korea, China and the Philippines to promote the sale of wheat. He was instrumental in promoting the U.S. Food for Peace program and was one of the first supporters of the sale of wheat to Russia and China.

Mr. Hardy was a member of the Board of Directors of St. John's Catholic Church from 1939 to 1961 and in 1973. He also served as director of the Home on the Range for Boys at Sentinel Butte, N.D., for many years.

He was a charter member of the Knights of Columbus of Beach, serving as Grand Knight from 1950 to 1953, State Deputy of North Dakota from 1954 to 1955 and North Dakota State Master of 4th Degree of Knights of Columbus from 1956 to 1958.

In addition to serving as mayor of Beach, he received many awards: Goodyear Soil Conservation Supervisor Award, District Supervisor Award, Achievement and Service Award from Great Plains Wheat, Service Award from North Dakota Wheat Commission, and a recognition and appreciation award from Felica Community, Lima, Peru, South America. He and his wife received the Agriculture Award from North Dakota State University in 1974.

He is survived by his children, Kathleen Matejcek, Bismarck, Albert J. Hardy, Dickinson, N.D., H. Michael Hardy, Fargo, Dennis Hardy, Kingman, Ariz., and Maurice Hardy, Beach; 22 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; his brothers, Dr. Paul Hardy, Mercer Island, Wash., Gerald Hardy, Santa Rosa, Calif., and Charles Hardy, Beach; and his sisters, Mary Muggli, Tacoma, Wash., and Margaret Marman, Bismarck.

He was preceded in death by his wife; a daughter, Mary Margaret Zinsli; and two sons, Kevin and Jerry.

Boulger Funeral Home, Fargo, was in charge of arrangements.
