Jesse Dan Angel

LAKIN -- Funeral for Jesse Dan Angel, 69, will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Garnand Funeral Home, Lakin, with the Rev. Carley Hazelton officiating. Burial will take place in Boise City (Okla.) Cemetery.

Mr. Angel died Monday, July 10, 2000, at his home in Lakin.

He was born Nov. 15, 1930, at Hugo, Okla., the son of Jess and May (Alston) Angel. He grew up in Hugo and attended schools there.

On May 30, 1961, he married Mary E. Ferris at Pauls Valley, Okla. They moved to Boise City in the early 1960s. In the early 1970s, they moved to Garden City, where Mr. Angel worked for many years as a front end and frame man at Vernon Cox Frame and Axle. He also enjoyed horses.

Mr. Angel and his wife have lived in Lakin since the mid-1990s.

Survivors include four sons, Nolan Angel, Wiley, Colo., Todd Angel and Jerry Angel, both of Lakin, and Shannon Angel, Kendall; a daughter, Lori Tolar, Liberal; and 10 grandchildren.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and from 9 a.m. to service time Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to High Plains Retirement Village, in care of the funeral home.

Ponciano Hernandez

LEOTI -- Vigil service for Ponciano Hernandez, 89, will be 7 tonight at St. Anthony Catholic Church, Leoti. Funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the church, with the Rev. Charles Mazouch officiating. Burial will be in Leoti Cemetery.

Mr. Hernandez died Saturday, July 8, 2000, at Wichita County Long Term Care Unit in Leoti.

He was born Nov. 19, 1910, at Fresnillo, Mexico, the son of Augustine and Magdelena Hernandez. A farmer, he had been a Leoti resident since 1997, moving from western Colorado. He was of the Catholic faith.

In 1937, he married Inez Martinez at Las Animas, Colo. She died in 1939 at Ordway, Colo. In 1943, he married Augustina Villareal at Ordway. She died in 1998 at Pharr, Texas.

He is survived by two sons, Antonio, Leoti, and Paul, Sugar City, Colo.; two daughters, Maria Ellena Guerra, Pharr, and Regina Hernandez, La Junta, Colo.; 15 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Visitation hours are until 9 tonight at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Leoti. Memorials are suggested to the Wichita County Long Term Care Unit, in care of the funeral home, P.O. Box 161, Leoti, KS 67861.

Luke Austin

Luke Austin, 59, died Saturday, July 8, 2000, at his home in Ulysses.

He was born Nov. 7, 1940, at Oklahoma City, the son of Luke and Helen (Martin) Austin.

A Ulysses resident for 22 years, moving from Yuma, Ariz., he was a truck driver and worked for Grant County Feeders. He was a member of Roselane Church of God at Ulysses and was a U.S. Marines veteran of the Vietnam War.

On May 5, 1980, he married Jadda Carol Shipley at Ulysses. She survives. He is also survived by three daughters, Le Ann Friese, Phoenix, Lorie Martin, Hugoton, and Georgianna Dotson, Beale Air Force Base, Calif.; and six grandchildren.

Funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Roselane Church of God, with the Rev. Michael Wirt officiating, followed by military rites by Charles B. Hart, Post 79 of the American Legion at Ulysses. Cremation will take place.

Mr. Austin will lie in state today at Paul's Funeral Home, Hugoton, and at the church from 1 p.m. Tuesday until service time Wednesday.

Duane Anthony Bieker

Funeral for Duane Anthony Bieker, 60, of Garden City, was 11 a.m. Thursday at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel, Morehead, Ky., with the Rev. Tracy Fannin officiating. Burial followed in Brown Cemetery.

Mr. Bieker, an automobile mechanic, died Sunday, July 2, 2000, at his home at 506 Bancroft Ave.

He was born July 29, 1939, at WaKeeney, the son of Anthony and Helen (Appelhans) Bieker.

Survivors include his mother, Garden City; two sons, David Eugene Bieker, Eaton, Ohio, and Joshua Befinley Bieker, Morehead; two daughters, Suzanne Russell and Teresa Rae Lambert, both of Morehead; two brothers, Stanley Bieker, Garden City, and Jerry Bieker, Dayton, Ohio; two sisters, Diane Florer, York, Neb., and Janelle Michel, Garden City; and 14 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father; and a brother, Ronnie Bieker.

Robert C. Dickson

LAKIN -- Robert C. Dickson, 67, of Lakin, died Thursday, July 6, 2000, at Kearny County Hospital in Lakin.

He was born May 2, 1933, at Glidden, Iowa, the son of Clarence E. and Marien L. (Stiegerwalt) Dickson.

A Lakin resident since 1957, he owned Dickson Custom Harvesting and Trucking, retiring in 1998. He was a member of Lakin Masonic Lodge, Eastern Star, Sportsman Club and Lakin Men's Bowling and served in the U.S. Army.

On Nov. 29, 1959, he married Darlene Oliver at Ulysses. She survives. He is also survived by two daughters, Kim Ansel, Kersey, Colo., and Judy Dickson, Garden City; a son, Kevin Dickson, Holcomb; two sisters, Ferne Horton, Lakin, and Ruth E. Brown, his twin sister from Sand Springs, Okla.; a brother, Ronald E. Dickson, Clearwater, Fla.; and eight grandchildren. He was preceded in death by an infant sister, Roberta Mae Dickson; a sister, Betty L. Oller; his parents; and a grandson.

Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Lakin Wesleyan Church, with the Rev. Jeff Lee officiating. Burial will follow in Lakin Cemetery, with military and Masonic rites conducted.

Visitation hours are from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and Sunday at Garnand Funeral Home, Lakin. Memorials are suggested to the church or the Lakin P.R.I.D.E. Committee, both in care of the funeral home, 508 N. Main St., Lakin, KS 67860.

Donald Ray Irsik

Wasilla resident Donald Ray Irsik 58, died at his home July 7, 2000.

Services are scheduled for 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 12, 2000, at Valley Funeral Home In Wasilla.

Mr. Irsik was born Feb. 10, 1942 In Garden City. He beame an Alaska resident in 1986 residing in Wasilla. He was a 27 year veteran of the U.S. Army who servedÀ a combat tour in Vietnam. He retired from military service in March of 1990 with multiple commedations & awards and will be buried with full military honors.

Besides his military career Mr. Irsik had also worked at Mat-Su College in Palmer for seven years. He was a member of Family Christian Center and had received awards for his volunteer work with Valley Crisis Pregnacy Center and with Habitat for Humanity. His main hobbies and interest were using his skills as a carpenter.

Mr. Irsik is survived by his wife, Sandy Irsik; children, Chuck, Christopher, Mark, Jill Irsik and Donna Carr; grandchildren Tyler, Shelby, Anthony Irsik and Lil' Joe Carr; mother, Thelma Irsik; sister, Joyce Carr; brothers, J.D. and Gary Irsik.

Memorial donations can be made to the American Cancer Society in Donald Irsik's name at 1057 W. Fireweed Lane, Anchorage, Alaska.À 99508; or by calling (907) 357- 4760 or 1-800-227-2345.

Interment will be at Wasilla Aurora Cemetery.

Richard Nelson Mentzer

ENSIGN -- Richard Nelson Mentzer, 55, died Thursday at Western Plains Medical Complex in Dodge City.

Mentzer was born Dec. 15, 1944 in Corpus Christi, Texas, the son of Austin and Vanita Mentzer.

He graduated from Ensign High School And Fort Hays State University. After working for Associates Financial Services in Lamar, Colo., Mentzer spent 18 years teaching science at Montezuma Junior/Senior High School.

He also spent most of his adult life as a farmer/rancher and enjoyed the rodeo, spending time team roping.

Mentzer was a member of the Ensign United Methodist Church, National Little Britches Rodeo Board, Kansas Professional Rodeo Association and U.S. Team Roping Championships.

Mentzer was preceded in death by his father.

Survivors include: his mother; one son, Toby Mentzer; one sister, Cynthia Hamilton, all of Ensign; one nephew; and three nieces.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the Roundup Arena in Dodge City. Rev. Gene Eshleman will officiate. Burial will be at Ensign Cemetery.

Visiting hours will be from noon to 8 p.m. Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday at Swaim Funeral Home in Dodge City.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Little Britches Rodeo Scholarship or Ensign United Methodist Church.
