Junious "J.B." Farmer

Memorial service for Junious "J.B." Farmer, 53, will be 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Dirtona Raceway in Hugoton.

Mr. Farmer died Saturday, Aug. 5, 2000, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.

He was born Aug. 18, 1946, at Wellington, the son of John Porter and Veda Maude (Swan) Farmer. A high school and college graduate, he had an associate's degree in business.

A former Garden City resident, Mr. Farmer moved to San Diego in 1980 and returned to Garden City in 1993. He worked as an automotive mechanic for 35 years including from 1993 to 1999 at Western Motor of Garden City. He was a Vietnam veteran serving with the U.S. Navy.

On June 6, 1972, he married Linda Sue Johnson at Las Vegas. She survives. Other survivors are two sons, John E. Farmer and Bryan J. Farmer, both of Garden City; two daughters, Venus Rowland, Garden City, and Elizabeth Newman, Northglenn, Colo.; his mother, Garden City; three brothers, John P. Farmer Jr., Sublette, Donald D. Farmer and Karl Farmer, both of San Diego; three sisters, Mary Holzhauser, Dodge City, Judy Renick, Cimarron, and Johnetta Carr, Benbrook, Texas; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father; a brother, Rudy Farmer; and two sisters, Lila Farmer and Veda Farmer.

There will be no visitation. Memorials to the J.B. Farmer Memorial Fund may be sent in care of Price & Sons Funeral Home or Western State Bank, both at Garden City.

Julia May Jantzen

ULYSSES - Julia May Jantzen, 78, of Ulysses, died Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2000, at Bethel Home Inc., Montezuma, where she had been a resident since Nov. 14, 1997.

She was born Aug. 19, 1921, at Cimarron, the daughter of Abraham and Matilda (Schultz) Koehn.

On July 12, 1942, she married Samuel R. Jantzen at Burns. They moved from Cimarron to Ulysses in October 1960. A homemaker, she was a member of Grant Mennonite Church at Ulysses.

Her husband died Nov. 5, 1997. She was also preceded in death by a son, Steven Jantzen; two brothers, Henry Koehn and Forrest Koehn; and a sister, Anne.

She is survived by five sons, Richard Jantzen, Stuart Jantzen and John Jantzen, all of Ulysses, David Jantzen, Grover, Texas, and James Jantzen, Newbern, Ala.; a daughter, LouEtta Ensz, Newbern; six sisters, Evelyn Dirks, Elsie Troyer and Margie Rokes, all of Atwater, Calif., Agnes Sykes and Elizabeth Amerson, both of Show Low, Ariz., and Doris May, Visalia, Calif.; 29 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements will be announced. Memorials are suggested to Bethel Home Inc., in care of Grant County Funeral Home, 218 S. Main St., Ulysses, KS 67880.

Lester Eugene Hilliard

MONTEZUMA - Graveside service for Lester Eugene Hilliard, 82, a former Gray County resident, will be 10 a.m. Saturday in Fairview Cemetery, Montezuma, with the Rev. Gene Eshleman officiating.

Mr. Hilliard died Nov. 25, 1997, at Branson, Mo.

He was born July 15, 1915, at Copeland, the son of James and Rebecca Hilliard.

On Aug. 5, 1939, he married Dorothy Maxine Markel at Dodge City. She died Dec. 25, 1999. He was preceded in death by three brothers, James Hilliard, Walt Hilliard and Clifford Hilliard; and three sisters, Ruth Hilliard, Leone Averett and Betty Rixon.

He is survived by three sons, Bob Hilliard, Carrollton, Ga., Mike Hilliard, Purcell, Okla., and Steve Hilliard, Forsyth, Mo.; a daughter, Pat Legault, New Brunswick, Canada; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Montezuma Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Winston L. Church

DIGHTON - Funeral for Winston L. Church, 86, will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church, Dighton, with the Rev. Lennie Maxwell officiating. Burial will be in Dighton Memorial Cemetery, with graveside rites conducted by Barney Masonic Lodge No. 279.

Mr. Church died Monday, Aug. 7, 2000, at Scott County Hospital in Scott City.

He was born June 6, 1914, in Lane County, the son of Leo Jewett and Alma Marie (Durr) Church. He attended Walnut Valley School in Lane County through the eighth grade and graduated in 1934 from Dighton High School.

Mr. Church was a farmer/stockman in Lane County from 1935 until 1968 when he became an investment banker and moved to Denver. He lived there from 1972 until returning to Lane County in 1974. He was a meat cutter and cook at the American Legion in Dighton from 1974 until January 2000, had also driven a truck for Mumma Feed Yard, and served as the Lane County District Magistrate Judge from 1978 until 1981.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church and Barney Masonic Lodge No. 279. His special interests were dancing and taking walks.

On Aug. 29, 1935, he married Esther M. Bush at Dighton. She survives. Other survivors are a son, Gerald Church, Mustang, Okla.; a granddaughter; a great-grandson; and a brother, W.R. Church, Mountain Home, Ark. He was preceded in death by a sister, Hazel Church.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at Boomhower Funeral Home, Dighton. Memorials are suggested to the United Methodist Church Scholarship Fund, in care of the funeral home.

Mildred Irene Lucas

SATANTA - Mildred Irene Lucas, 95, died Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2000, at Satanta District Hospital.

She was born June 24, 1905, at Elizabeth, Ind., the daughter of Elmer and Myra Alice (Lenmon) Black. The family moved to Edwards County in 1912. She graduated from Lewis High School in 1923 and then obtained a teaching certificate from Hays College and taught for one year.

On April 26, 1924, she married Wayne Lucas at Lewis. They moved to Haskell County in 1930. He died Sept. 1, 1981. She was also preceded in death by four brothers, two sisters and one grandson.

A farm wife and homemaker, Mrs. Lucas was a member of Satanta United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women, a former member of the Santee Club and had been a member of the Sunshine Club for more than 60 years.

A Garden City resident since 1994, she moved to the Satanta Long Term Care Unit in November 1999.

She is survived by five children, Wesley and Ronald, both of Satanta, Gerald, Sublette, Marilyn Schmale, Garden City, and Vicki Selby, Denver; 15 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Satanta United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Garden City.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Haskell County Funeral Home, Sublette. Memorials are suggested to the Satanta Long Term Care Unit or the Gideons, both in care of the funeral home, 115 S. Inman St., Sublette, KS 67870.

Bernadine Helen "Bernie" Bridges

Vigil service for Bernadine Helen "Bernie" Bridges, 76, of Great Bend, will be 7 tonight at Bryant-Christians Funeral Home, Great Bend, followed by Daughters of Isabella rosary. Funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Great Bend, with the Rev. Warren Stecklein officiating. Burial will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park, Great Bend.

Mrs. Bridges died Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2000, at Central Kansas Medical Center, St. Rose Campus, Great Bend.

She was born May 11, 1924, at Claflin, the daughter of Anton J. and Mary E. (Kimpler) Straub.

A Great Bend resident since 1982, moving from Larned, Mrs. Bridges was retired after working as a cook at Cunningham and Larned Catholic schools. She was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, Altar Society, Daughters of Isabella and the Eagles Lodge Auxiliary, all at Great Bend, and Weavers Needle Community at Apache Junction, Ariz.

On May 4, 1942, she married Robert W. Bridges at Ellinwood. He survives. She is also survived by two sons, James Robert Bridges, Oktaha, Okla., and Richard Leroy Bridges, Garden City; two daughters, Betty Jean Hawthorne, Great Bend, and Mary Frances Spade, Wichita; a brother, Walter "Wally" Straub, Great Bend; two sisters, Patricia Moore, Great Bend, and Dorothy Hamilton, Nevada, Mo.; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation hours are until 9 tonight and from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Sunflower Diversified Services-Early Education, in care of the funeral home, 1425 Patton Road, Great Bend, KS 67530.

Charles W. Lawhead

Johnson CITY - Charles W. Lawhead, 67, died Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2000, at Kearny County Hospital, Lakin, from injuries suffered in an automobile accident east of Lakin.

He was born March 1, 1933, at Stafford, the son of James and Orpha Lawhead. The family moved to Syracuse in 1944 and he had been a resident of Johnson City since 1973.

The owner of C & L Hay and Lawhead Farms, he farmed in Stanton and Hamilton counties. He was a former member of the Johnson City Co-op Board and the Johnson City Council, a member of the board of directors for Southwest Bank of Ulysses, Hugoton and Elkhart, a member of Stanton County Development Corp., and attended Fields Memorial Wesleyan Church.

On April 7, 1957, he married Leta Baldwin at Syracuse. She survives. Other survivors are two daughters, Denise Huse and Mary Davison, both of Johnson City; a brother, LaVerne Lawhead, Syracuse; and four grandchildren.

Funeral will be 10 a.m. CST Monday at Fields Memorial Wesleyan Church, Johnson City, with the Rev. Dave Kaufmann officiating. Burial will be in Syracuse Cemetery.

Visitation hours are from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Garnand Funeral Home, Johnson City. Memorials are suggested to Fields Memorial Wesleyan Church Building Fund, in care of the funeral home, 605 W. North Ave., Johnson City, KS 67855.
