Virginia Lee Henley

Virginia Lee Henley, 68, died Wednesday, Aug. 16, 2000, at her home in Ransom.

She was born Dec. 31, 1931, at Tribune, the daughter of Ernest and Lena (Yost) Noble.

A homemaker, she had lived in Ransom for three years having previously been a longtime resident of Ulysses.

She is survived by five sons, Larry, Arlington, Texas, Kenneth, Penrose, Colo., William Van, Wasilla, Alaska, Frankie, Abilene, Texas, and Bennie, Texas; two daughters, Diane Rankin, Wasilla, and Linda Harlan, Las Animas, Colo.; four sisters, Eleanor Smith, Ulysses, Becky Lee, Penrose, Verna and Claudia, both of Arizona; 20 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Billy Gene Henley, who died on Sept. 15, 1984.

A private family service is planned at a later date. Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation. Fitzgerald Funeral Home, Ness City, is in charge of arrangements.

Gary F. Scott

Gary F. Scott, 61, died Wednesday, Aug. 16, 2000, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.

He was born March 28, 1939, at Fay, Okla., the son of James Delbert and Ferne (Baker) Scott.

Mr. Scott lived in Pratt for many years, then lived in Tribune for two years before moving to Garden City in 1978. He worked on the assembly line making billfolds at Southwest Developmental Services Inc., in Garden City.

A member of First Assembly of God Church, he enjoyed singing in the church choir and his other church activities and also enjoyed bowling.

He is survived by a sister, Patsy Radenberg, Great Bend; a nephew; a niece; and a cousin.

Funeral will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City, with the Rev. Kent Anderson officiating. Graveside service will be 3 p.m. Saturday in Greenlawn Cemetery, Pratt.

Visitation hours are from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the church or the donor's choice, both in care of the funeral home.

Doris June Gaut

HUGOTON - Funeral for Doris June Gaut, 64, of Hugoton, will be 1 p.m. Friday at First Christian Church, Hugoton, with the Rev. Robert Bailey officiating. Burial will be in Liberal Cemetery.

Mrs. Gaut died Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2000, at Stevens County Hospital in Hugoton.

She was born Aug. 22, 1935, at Liberal, the daughter of Lee Roy and Nellie P. (Carlile) Craig. On May 25, 1957, she married Carl Gaut at Clayton, N.M.

A Hugoton resident for three years, moving from McClave, Colo., she had worked as a bookkeeper for Reyer Enterprises. A homemaker, she was a member of Church of Christ in Tyrone, Okla.

She is survived by a son, Carl Dwayne Gaut, McClave; two daughters, Leona Faye Mason, Hugoton, and Connie Gaut, Las Animas, Colo.; a brother, Fred Craig, Woodward, Okla.; four sisters, Neva Day and Pauline Rodkey, both of Tyrone, Ruth Fields, Lubbock, Texas, and Avis Bell, Hugoton; and eight grandchildren.

Paul's Funeral Home, Hugoton, is in charge of arrangements.

Mignon Lorena Hammond

ULYSSES - Mignon Lorena Hammond, 89, a longtime Ulysses resident, died Wednesday, Aug. 16, 2000, at Kearny County Hospital in Lakin. She had been a resident of High Plains Retirement Village, Lakin, since 1984.

The daughter of Carl and Lena (Berns) Moyer, she was born Sept. 8, 1910, in Grant County, where she spent most of her life.

Mrs. Hammond worked as a nurse's aide at Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital and at Western Prairie Care Home in Ulysses. She was a member of Shockey Grange, Farm Bureau, H.D.U., Early Bird Garden Club and Shelton Memorial Christian Church. Her hobbies included cooking for her family, gardening, oil painting, photography, traveling, crocheting and giving her handmade gifts to her family.

On April 3, 1932, she married Raymond Hammond at Ulysses. He died in 1981. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Aubrey Moyer.

She is survived by a son, Phillip Raymond Hammond, Ulysses; two daughters, Dorothy Hollingsworth, San Jose, Calif., and Lucinda Butler, Ordway, Colo.; a sister, Marjorie Smith, Thayer, Mo.; 11 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be 10 a.m. Saturday at High Plains Retirement Village, Lakin, with the Rev. Bill Harrold officiating. Graveside service will be in Ulysses Cemetery.

Visitation hours are from 6 to 8 tonight and from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Grant County Funeral Home, Ulysses. Memorials are suggested to the Grant County Museum at Ulysses or High Plains Retirement Village at Lakin, both in care of the funeral home, 218 S. Main St., Ulysses, KS 67880.

Eloise Basinger

Graveside service for Eloise Basinger, 91, a former Garden City resident, will be 11 a.m. Saturday in Wichita Park Cemetery, Wichita, with Byrd Hillside Funeral Home of Wichita in charge of the service.

Mrs. Basinger died Wednesday, Aug. 16, 2000, at Albuquerque, N.M.

She was born July 16, 1909, at Coats. Prior to moving to Albuquerque in 1989, she resided in Wichita, where she was well known for her award-winning decorative arts.

Survivors include her twin daughters, Jane Driver, Albuquerque, and Joan Holliway, Queen Valley, Ariz.; a granddaughter; two great-grandsons; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clayton Basinger, in 1992; a sister, Kathleen Shore; a brother, Boyd Shore; and a grandson.

Memorials are suggested to the Alzheimer's Association, New Mexico Chapter, 1330 San Pedro NE, Albuquerque, NM 87110 or to Sandia Hospice Memorial Foundation, 4725 Indian School Road NE Suite 100, Albuquerque, NM 87110.

French Mortuary Wyoming Blvd. Chapel, Albuquerque, is in charge of arrangements.

Grace Abilene DeCamp

HUGOTON - Grace Abilene DeCamp, 104, a longtime Hugoton resident, died Thursday, Aug. 17, 2000, at the Satanta Long Term Care Unit.

She was born Oct. 24, 1895, at Waterlow, the daughter of Lewis Riley and Livona R. (Tarrant) Wilson.

A Hugoton resident since 1925, moving from Greensburg, she was a farm wife and homemaker. She attended Assembly of God Church.

On March 31, 1925, she married Tom F. DeCamp at Greensburg. He died Nov. 20, 1981. She was also preceded in death by a son, Medford; a grandson; and two granddaughters.

She is survived by two sons, Lowell DeCamp, Leeds, Utah, and Thomas DeCamp Jr., Yuma, Ariz.; three daughters, Verda Hickey, Pontoosue, Ill., June McKenzie, Lancaster, Calif., and Fay Allen, Dewar, Okla.; 20 grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren; and 22 great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Assembly of God Church, Hugoton, with the Rev. Robert Bailey officiating. Burial will be in Liberal Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to the Satanta Long Term Care Unit Memorial Fund, in care of Paul's Funeral Home, Hugoton.

Charley W. Upchurch

HOLCOMB - Charley W. Upchurch, 73, died Thursday, Aug. 17, 2000, at the Kansas Heart Hospital in Wichita.

He was born May 23, 1927, in Cleveland County, Okla., the son of John and Mary (Grizzle) Upchurch. He grew up in Norman, Okla., and attended schools there.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Air Corp from 1944 to 1946. He had lived in Garden City since being stationed here at the end of his military career.

Mr. Upchurch worked as a manager for Boss Irrigation, then worked as a ditch superintendent for the Farmers Ditch. He enjoyed fishing, golfing, hunting, bowling, gardening and especially enjoyed his grandchildren.

On Sept. 1, 1946, he married Iola Biehn at Garden City. She survives. He is also survived by a son, Greg Upchurch, Garden City; a sister, Mildred Kline, Norman, Okla.; and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Gwendolyn Upchurch; and a brother, Loyd Upchurch.

Funeral will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City, with the Rev. Robert Cousins officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City, with military graveside rites conducted by the Garden City Area Veterans Honor Guard.

Visitation hours are from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Memorials to the donor's choice may be sent in care of the funeral home.
