Ellis E. "Jack" Betts

Ellis E. "Jack" Betts, 78, a former Garden City resident, died Sunday, Aug. 20, 2000, at Newton Medical Center.

Born at Garden City on Feb. 5, 1922, he was the son of Frank Earnest and Hazel (Withers) Betts.

A carpenter, Mr. Betts worked for Alumbaugh Management in Newton. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.

He married Virginia Rozabelle Menzie. She died in 1969. On July 23, 1977, he married Garnett L. Ayres Stroud at Garden City. She survives.

He is also survived by three sons, Jay Roger, Newton, Jackie Wayne, Winslow, Ariz., and Richard, Vineyard, Minn.; two daughters, Judy Dara Martin, Newton, and Sharon Pierce, Fayetteville, Ark.; two stepsons, Jack Dean Stroud, Buna, Texas, and Robert Eugene Stroud, Tulsa, Okla.; a stepdaughter, Beverly Jo Galentine, Cottonwood Falls; four sisters, Stella Whitlock, Boise, Idaho, Carole Johnson, Fort Scott, Martha Mae Miller, Garden City, and Rose Marie Moore, Euless, Texas; three brothers, Daryle Betts, Idaho Springs, Colo., Ronald Betts and Monte Betts, both of Central Point, Ore.; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; eight stepgrandchildren; and eight stepgreat-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by four sisters, Hazel Cecil, Midge Miller, Jerry Earnest and Katheryn Kahrs.

There was no service. Broadway Colonial Funeral Home, Newton, handled arrangements.

Roger Vernon Heim

SCOTT CITY - Roger Vernon Heim, 88, died Tuesday, Aug. 29, 2000, at Scott County Hospital in Scott City.

He was born Oct. 13, 1911, at Blackwater, Mo., the son of Warner William and Sadie Irene (Garrett) Heim.

A resident of Scott City since 1929, moving from Marion, he was a farmer and stockman. His greatest achievement was claiming first place at the National Sorghum Contest.

Mr. Heim was a member of First Christian Church and a former member of the ASC Board, FHA Board and Scott Co-op Board, both of which he helped organize, the William Carpenter Board, the Scott County Fair Board for 11 years, Farm Bureau Board and Scott County Extension Council, all at Scott City, and the Modoc School Board at Modoc, and was chairman of the Scott County Republican Committee.

On June 14, 1936, he married Doris Margie Frost at Cimarron. She died June 9, 1982, at Scott City. He was also preceded in death by a son, Vernon Roger Heim; and a daughter, Carol Sue Hassler.

He is survived by three daughters, Marjorie Ann Riggs and Shirley May Griffith, both of Scott City, and Liquetta Joyce Cole, Modoc; two brothers, Milton "Bus" Heim, Columbia, Mo., and Beverly "Sonny" Heim, Belton, Mo.; two sisters, Evie Bauck, Leoti, and Betty Mitchell, Silver Lake; 17 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at First Baptist Church, Scott City, with the Rev. Lynne Smith officiating. Burial will be in Scott County Cemetery, Scott City.

Visitation hours are from 5 to 9 tonight and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City. Memorials are suggested to Scott County Hospital, in care of the funeral home.

Binh Van Tran

Binh Van Tran, 32, died Monday, Aug. 28, 2000, at St. Catherine Hospital, Garden City, from injuries suffered in an automobile accident.

Born Nov. 5, 1967, in Vietnam, he was the son of Lap Van Tran and Nhieu Thi Truong.

He came to the United States in 1980, living in various places before moving to Liberal where he graduated from Southwest Kansas Technical School. A Garden City resident since 1999, he enjoyed playing pool.

On Feb. 19, 2000, he married Muoi Thai in Garden City. She survives. He is also survived by his parents and a brother, Hien Van Tran, all of Vietnam.

A private family burial will take place at a later date in Vietnam.

Visitation hours are from 4 to 8 tonight and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City.

Gladys Pauline Brown

Gladys Pauline Brown, 89, died Thursday, Sept. 28, 2000, at Terrace Garden Care Center in Garden City.

She was born Oct. 20, 1910, at Timken, the daughter of John J. and Anna (Budde) Wilhelm. She grew up in Timken and attended schools there.

On Jan. 29, 1936, she married Robert Gleeson at Pratt. They moved to Kalvesta after their marriage and lived in the Kalvesta area until moving to Garden City in 1983.

A homemaker, Mrs. Brown also worked as a cook for many years at Theoni School in Finney County. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Garden City and a member of the Methodist Church while living in Kalvesta. She also belonged to the Cheerful Workers Club and the Playmor Card Club, both at Kalvesta. She enjoyed playing bingo and cards, gardening, and spending time with her family.

Her husband died Jan. 6, 1996. She was also preceded in death by a son, Mark Gleeson Brown; a daughter, Phyllis Gladys Brown; a brother, Virgil Wilhelm; and a sister, Selma Dyer.

She is survived by a daughter, Marcille M. Wilke, Garden City; a sister, Dorothy Koochel, Great Bend; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at the First United Methodist Church, Garden City, with the Rev. Robert Cousins officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City

Visitation hours are from 5 to 8 tonight, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday and 9 to 11 a.m. Monday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to the church or the Make-A-Wish Foundation, both in care of the funeral home.

Frank W. Lightner

Funeral for Frank W. Lightner, 84, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church, Garden City. The Rev. Ray Raley will officiate, assisted by the Rev. Robert Cousins. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.

Mr. Lightner died Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2000, at Terrace Garden Care Center in Garden City.

He was born Sept. 5, 1916, in Finney County, the son of John and Marvel (Long) Lightner. He attended Bowman Ridge Grade School and Pierceville High School, graduated from Garden City High School in 1934, and attended Garden City Junior College.

A lifetime resident of southern Finney County, he was a farmer and the owner of Lightner Welding Supply. After his retirement, he assisted his wife in conducting quilting classes in their home and he also enjoyed gardening.

Mr. Lightner was a charter member and former board member of Plymell Union Church, and served on the Plymell School Board, Garden City Co-Op Board, Farmland Industries Board, Farmland Foods Board, Far-Mar-Co Board and the Finney County Historical Society Board.

He was one of the organizers of the Finney County Soil Conservation District, the Local Farm Management Association and the Equity Federal Credit Union, a former member of the Ivanhoe Valley Grange and was a 32nd Mason.

On July 27, 1937, he married Margaret Rundell at Pierceville. She survives. He is also survived by a son, Lynn Lightner, Garden City; a brother, Harry Lightner, Cleveland, Okla.; a sister, Margaret Hibler, Pierceville; and a granddaughter. He was preceded in death by a son, Jimmy; four brothers, George Lightner, Loyd Lightner, Dale Lightner and Virgil Lightner; and two sisters, Alma McGraw and Elizabeth Lightner.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City, with the family receiving friends from 6 to 8 tonight. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society or the Finney County Historical Society, both in care of the funeral home.

Sandra R. "Becky" Valverde Torres

HOLCOMB - Sandra R. "Becky" Valverde Torres, 22, of 106 N. Main St. in Holcomb, died Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2000, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus, Wichita.

She was born Oct. 27, 1977, at Durango, Mexico, the daughter of Julio and Enriqueta (Hinojos) Valverde. The family moved to Garden City in 1985 and she attended Garden City schools.

She had worked at Bethphage for one year and was a member of Church of God of the First Born, Garden City. She enjoyed shopping, going to the movies, and spending time with her children, family and friends.

On July 24, 1994, she married Jesus Torres at Amarillo, Texas. He survives. She is also survived by a son, Jonathan Zuriel Torres, and a daughter, Sandra Lizabeth Torres, both of the home; her parents, Garden City; a brother, Jose Guadalupe Valverde, Garden City; two sisters, Maria Eugenia Ruiz and Sofia Madaglena Garcia, both of Garden City; her grandmother, Aurelia Hinojos, Garden City; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by an uncle.

Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Church of God of the First Born, Garden City, with the Rev. John Janas officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to noon Sunday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City, and from 2 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the church, 2909 W. Mary St. Memorials to the Sandra R. Valverde Torres Memorial Fund may be sent in care of the funeral home.

Cassandra Renee Downey

ULYSSES - Funeral for Cassandra Renee Downey, the daughter of Eric and Andrea (Schmidt) Downey of Ulysses, will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the Christian Church, Copeland, with the Rev. Larry Donelson officiating. Burial will be in Copeland Cemetery.

Cassandra died Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2000, at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita, shortly after her birth.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by her grandparents, Ronnie and Barbara Schmidt, Copeland, and Vickie Downey and Robert Downey, both of Junction City; her great-grandparents, Darrel C. Schmidt, Copeland, Lloyd Downey, Mount Pleasant, Iowa, Patsy Davis, Watonga, OKla., and BeulahBolender, Monmouth, Ill.; her great-great-grandfather, Don Bolender, Champaign, Ill.; numerous uncles and aunts; and one cousin. She was preceded in death by her great-grandmother, Vera Schmidt; her great-grandfathers, Dewey Halverson and Robert Bolender; and her stepgrandfather, Jimmy Davis.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at Haskell County Funeral Home, Sublette. Memorials are suggested for the family or the NICU at Wesley Hospital, both in care of the funeral home, Box 607, Sublette, KS 67877.
