Mary Frances Friend

SYRACUSE - Mary Frances Friend, 79, died Oct. 22, 1996, at Sun City, Ariz., after an extended illness.

She was born March 17, 1917, at Guymon, Okla., the daughter of Francis Newman and Mary Catharine (Murphy) Cheatum.

On April 13, 1941, she married Oscar Earl Friend at Alva, Okla. The family lived in Pratt, moved to Syracuse in 1945 and managed a farm and a flower shop, and later retired to Denver, then moved to Sun City in 1985.

A homemaker, Mrs. Friend enjoyed people, had various hobbies throughout the years, enjoyed flowers, was a seamstress, and was a past president of the Pink Ladies Hospital Auxiliary. She and her husband were active in the Methodist Church.

She is survived by a daughter, Nancy Sue New, Cumming, Ga.; a son, David Earl Friend, London; a sister, Martha Housholder, Syracuse; three brothers, Robert Cheatum, San Mateo, Calif., Dale Cheatum, Cushing, Okla., and Richard Cheatum, Syracuse; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Barbara Grassman and Kathryn Hall; and two brothers, James Boyd Cheatum and Lyle Cheatum. Her husband died Sept. 11, 2000.

Cremation has taken place. A memorial service was Oct. 29, 1996, at Best Funeral Service Chapel in Sun City.

A joint memorial inurnment service for Mrs. Friend and her husband will begin at 1 p.m. MST Friday in Syracuse Cemetery, with the Rev. William Fitzgerrel officiating.

Memorials are suggested to the First United Methodist Church, in care of Greene-Fellers Funeral Home, P.O. Box 1253, Syracuse, KS 67878.

John E. Tracy Sr.

SYRACUSE - Rosary and vigil service for John E. Tracy Sr., 83, of Syracuse, will be 7 p.m. MST Thursday at St. Raphael Catholic Church, Syracuse. Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. MST Friday at the church. Graveside service will follow in Syracuse Cemetery. A dinner for the family will then take place at the church.

Mr. Tracy died Monday, Sept. 25, 2000, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.

He was born Sept. 4, 1917, at Harper, the son of Omer J. and Sally (McCready) Tracy. He attended school in Harper, graduating in 1935.

On Jan. 14, 1943, he married Virginia Ann Tenbrink at the Catholic Church in Anthony. They moved to Syracuse in 1946 where he worked as a farmer/rancher.

Mr. Tracy served as a captain in the 873rd Corp of Engineers, serving with distinction in the Pacific Islands during World War II. He was a member of St. Raphael Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus, president of Wheatland Electric Board, past president of Sunflower Electric Board, former member and president of Hamilton County Fair Board, and a past member and president of Syracuse School Board.

He was a former director of the ASCS (Agricultural Stabilization Conservation Services), a member of the Kansas Livestock Association, a former 4-H leader and a former member of the Kansas Association of Wheat Growers. He raised registered quarter horses and enjoyed elk hunting.

He is survived by his wife; five sons, John E. Tracy Jr., Liberal, Dr. Michael Tracy, Upland, Calif., Timothy Tracy and Patrick Tracy, both of Syracuse, and William Tracy, Nuevo, Calif.; two brothers, Omer Tracy Jr., Harper, and Ray Tracy, Wichita; three sisters, Bessie May Kriepe, Arkansas City, Juanita Scholl and Ruby Wiemeyer, both of Wichita; 10 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother, in April 1983; his father, in April 1984; and a brother, Harold, in May 1997.

Visitation hours are until 8 MST tonight and from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. MST Thursday at Greene-Fellers Funeral Home, Syracuse. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society-Colon Research or the donor's choice, both in care of the funeral home, P.O. Box 1253, Syracuse, KS 67878-1253.

Joyce M. Alsup

SATANTA - Graveside service for Joyce M. Alsup, 76, of Satanta, will be 2 p.m. Tuesday in Forest Park Cemetery, Anthony, with the Rev. Ray Tweed officiating.

A retired housekeeper for the Antler Hotel at Wellington, she died Sunday, Sept. 24, 2000, at Satanta.

She was born Jan. 22, 1924, at Anthony, the daughter of William and Opal (Welch) Brown. She married Alvie Newland. After his death, she married Carl Posey, who died in 1985.

Survivors include a son, Dennis Newland, Wichita; a daughter, Gail Oller, Satanta; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a sister, Arlene Kinkead, Miami, Okla.

Memorials are suggested to the Satanta Long Term Care Unit, in care of Elliott Mortuary, Anthony.

Jack Ray Staples

Funeral for Jack Ray Staples, 54, of Hugoton, will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Assembly of God Church, Hugoton, with the Rev. Robert Bailey officiating. Burial will be in Hugoton Cemetery, with military graveside rites conducted.

Mr. Staples died Saturday, Sept. 23, 2000, at Stevens County Hospital in Hugoton.

He was born Oct. 23, 1945, at Liberal, the son of Henry and Dorothy Luetta (Raslex) Staples.

A Hugoton resident for seven years, moving from Falls Church, Va., he had lived in the area for 27 years. Mr. Staples had been employed as a purchasing agent for the Stevens County Hospital. A lifetime member of the VFW, he was a Vietnam veteran.

He is survived by several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Memorials to the donor's choice may be sent in care of Paul's Funeral Home, Hugoton.

John Eck

COPELAND - Funeral for John Eck, 83, of Copeland, was Tuesday at Lux and Schnepp Funeral Home, Carson City, with the Revs. John Haynes and Don Gable officiating. Burial was in Hayes Road Cemetery, Ithaca.

Mr. Eck died Friday, Sept. 15, 2000, at Nottingham Place in Lansing.

He was born April 24, 1917, near Durham, the son of Cornelius and Lydia Eck.

On April 23, 1939, he married Edna (Hoeppner) Hiebert at Hillsboro. They made their home in Copeland where he was a farmer. Mr. Eck enjoyed farming, reading, singing, and church and community involvements, and participated in volunteer work.

He is survived by his wife; his children, Judith Sigafoose and John Harold, both of Florida, Evalena Litwiller, Bonnie Haynes, Carol Seller and Anita Haynes, all of Michigan, Barbara Unruh, Steven and Ernest, all of Kansas, Kathleen Toews and Margaret Dykast, both of Oregon, Jeanette Koehn, Nebraska, Helen Redding, Tennessee, and Charles, California; two sisters, Myrtle Eck and Esther Ratzloff, both of California; 53 grandchildren; and 77 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Leonard; an infant great-granddaughter; two sisters; and four brothers.

Memorials are suggested to Hospice, in care of the funeral home.

Lillie Giesbrecht

MONTEZUMA - Lillie Giesbrecht, 89, died Saturday, Sept. 23, 2000, at Bethel Home Inc., Montezuma, where she had been a resident.

She was born Aug. 23, 1911, in Marion County, the daughter of Jacob J. and Lizzie (Koehn) Wedel.

A homemaker, she has been a nurse's aide. She was a member of Church of God in Christ Mennonite, Montezuma.

On April 14, 1929, she married Isaac Giesbrecht. He preceded her in death as did a son, Quentin Giesbrecht; three brothers, William Wedel, Frank Wedel and Edwin Wedel; and a sister, Frances Wine Nightengale.

She is survived by three sons, Wilbert Giesbrecht, Missouri City, Texas, Dwayne Giesbrecht, Turlock, Calif., and Randall Giesbrecht, Phoenix; two daughters, Darlene Shay, Madera, Calif., and Loretta Spence, Turlock; two sisters, Mary Smith, Montezuma, and Elsie Koop, Springdale, Ariz.; and 20 grandchildren.

Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Church of God in Christ Mennonite, Montezuma. Harold H. Koehn, Edwin Classen and Luther Smith, ministers, will officiate. Burial will be in North Mennonite Cemetery, Montezuma.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday at Montezuma Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to Bethel Home Inc., in care of the funeral home, Box 421, Montezuma, KS 67867.

Louise M. Jacobus

TRIBUNE - Louise M. Jacobus, 58, of Tribune, died Saturday, Sept. 23, 2000, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.

She was born Nov. 16, 1941, at Scott City, the daughter of Edwin and Letha (Samuelson) Russell.

A lifetime resident of Tribune, she was a homemaker and had worked for Gooch's for 10 years, delivered The Garden City Telegram since 1989, and was a Sunday School teacher.

Mrs. Jacobus was a member of Assembly of God, WM's, Chamber of Commerce Board and the Greeley County Food Pantry Board.

On Jan. 7, 1961, she married Steve J. Jacobus at Tribune. He survives. She is also survived by two sons, Daniel Jacobus, Las Animas, Colo., and Steven Jacobus Jr., Tribune; a daughter, Jackie; and six grandchildren.

Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Assembly of God, Tribune, with the Rev. Mike Underwood officiating. Burial will be in Greeley County Cemetery, Tribune.

Visitation hours are until 9 tonight and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City. Memorials to the Louise Jacobus Memorial Fund may be sent in care of the funeral home.
