Moises Arellano

HUGOTON - Funeral for Moises Arellano, 88, of Hugoton, will be 10 a.m. Saturday at First Church of God, Hugoton, with the Rev. Leslie Ratzlaff officiating. Burial will be in Hugoton Cemetery.

Mr. Arellano died Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2000, at Southwest Medical Center in Liberal.

He was born Sept. 1, 1912, at Pasamonte, N.M., the son of Felipe and Angelita Velasquez.

A Hugoton resident since 1950, moving from Ulysses, he was a retired farm laborer and employee of Stevens County Road and Bridge.

On March 23, 1946, he married Pauline Leal at Clayton, N.M. She survives. He is also survived by three sons, Moses Jr., Hugoton, Phillip, Albuquerque, N.M., and Ret. Sgt. Major Alfred Arellano, Fayetteville, N.C.; six daughters, Lita Talbert, Ruby Watkins, Mary Romero, Shirley Hale and Donice Medina, all of Hugoton, and Rosalie Robinson, Bridgeport, Texas; 22 grandchildren; and 31 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a grandson, a granddaughter, five brothers and two sisters.

Paul's Funeral Home, Hugoton, is in charge of arrangements.

Norman Gene Baldwin

CIMARRON - Funeral for Norman Gene Baldwin, 71, of Cimarron, will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church, Cimarron, with the Rev. Frank DeFisher officiating. Burial will be in Cimarron Cemetery, with military rites conducted by VFW Howard Gotschall Post No. 1714.

Mr. Baldwin died Thursday, Sept. 14, 2000, at Western Plains Medical Complex in Dodge City.

He was born Feb. 28, 1929, in Rush County, the son of Ross and Edith (Littler) Baldwin.

A lifelong educator and school administrator, he earned a bachelor's degree from Fort Hays State University, a master's degree from Northern Colorado University in Greeley, Colo., in 1956, and a specialist degree from the University of Colorado in 1966.

Mr. Baldwin was a member of the Cimarron United Methodist Church, U.S.A. (Emeritis), Council of Superintendents, Elks Club, Rotary Club, and Phi Delta Kappa and Kappa Sigma Kappa at Fort Hays State University, served in various capacities for several educational organizations, and served at Camp Chaffee in Fort Smith, Ark., during the Korean War.

On June 22, 1952, he married Mildred Lenagar at Turon. She died Oct. 28, 1993.

He is survived by a son, Jim Baldwin, Overland Park; two daughters, Debra Burkhart, Coon Rapids, Minn., and Susan Manes, Ellsworth; a brother, Bev Baldwin, LaCrosse; and six grandchildren.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at Swaim Funeral Chapel, Cimarron. Memorials to the Norman Baldwin Memorial Scholarship Fund may be sent in care of the funeral home.

Ted Joseph VanCampen

HOLCOMB - Ted Joseph VanCampen, 21, died Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2000, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus, Wichita, from injuries suffered in an automobile accident.

He was born April 13, 1979, at Garden City, the son of Jim and Patty (Hahn) VanCampen. He grew up in Garden City and attended school here before the family moved to Holcomb, where he graduated from Holcomb High School in 1996.

After attending Garden City Community College and an electrical apprentice program in Wichita, he returned to Holcomb and had worked as a lineman for J & J Power Line.

Mr. VanCampen was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Garden City. As a person who was very much family oriented, he enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He also enjoyed playing basketball and pool.

He is survived by his parents, of the home; two brothers, Eric VanCampen, of Victoria, and Jacob VanCampen, of the home; two sisters, Amanda VanCampen, Garden City, and Molly VanCampen, of the home; his grandparents, Wanda Hahn, Garden City, and Jack and Eleanor VanCampen, Hutchinson; his fiancee, Jessica Blackburn, Holcomb; and a nephew.

Vigil service will be 7 p.m. Sunday at St. Mary Catholic Church, Garden City, with rosary to follow. Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Monday at the church, with the Rev. James E. Baker officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Garden City.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to the Ted VanCampen Memorial Basketball Scholarship Fund, in care of the funeral home.

Ida Toews

MONTEZUMA - Ida Toews, 86, died early this morning, Sept. 14, 2000, at Bethel Home Inc., Montezuma, where she had been a resident since 1988.

She was born Sept. 1, 1914, at Las Animas, Colo., the daughter of Peter T. and Dina (Buller) Unruh.

On Nov. 4, 1945, she married Lloyd Toews at Montezuma. They lived in the Scott City area for most of their married life. He died Sept. 18, 1988. She was also preceded in death by five brothers, Abraham Unruh, Tobias Unruh, John Unruh, Cecil Unruh and Henry Unruh; and four sisters, Elizabeth Frank, Nettie Koehn, Lena Unruh and Emma Unruh.

A homemaker, Mrs. Toews was a member of Church of God in Christ Mennonite, Montezuma.

She is survived by three brothers, Cornelius Unruh and David Unruh, both of Montezuma, and Frank Unruh, West Point, Miss.; and two sisters, Lydia Koehn and Vada Unruh, both of Montezuma.

Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Church of God in Christ Mennonite, Montezuma. Edwin Classen, Richard Koehn and Charles Schmidt, ministers, will officiate. Burial will be in North Mennonite Cemetery, Montezuma.

Visitation hours are from 6 to 8 tonight and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday at Montezuma Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to Bethel Home Inc., in care of the funeral home, Box 421, Montezuma, KS 67867.

Morena Nairn

Morena Nairn, 59, of Liberal, died Monday, Sept. 11, 2000, at Southwest Medical Center in Liberal.

She was born Oct. 13, 1940, at Frederick, Okla., the daughter of Claud and Viola Pearl (Shelton) Fowler. In 1958, she married Robert Nairn at Garden City.

A Liberal resident since 1991, moving from Elkhart, she worked as a receptionist at Anadarko Petroleum Corp. She was an accomplished seamstress and enjoyed needlework, ceramics and craft making. She enjoyed traveling, attending her grandchildren's activities and going to auctions.

She is survived by her companion, Ron Clodfelter, Liberal; a son, Danny Nairn, Port Townsend, Wash.; a daughter, Brenda Kendrick, Johnson City; four brothers, David Fowler, Calvin Fowler and Terry Fowler, all of Garden City, and Roger Fowler, Dacona, Colo.; five sisters, Wanda Miller, Sapulpa, Okla., Patricia Matroni, Titusville, Fla., Phyllis Cook, Orange Park, Fla., Marilyn Witman, Aurora, Colo., and Cindy Keller, Garden City; and eight grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Brian Nairn; and a sister, Helen Hickey.

Memorial service will be 10 a.m. Friday at First Baptist Church, Liberal, with the Rev. David Bagwell officiating. Graveside service will follow at 2 p.m. in Elkhart Cemetery.

Cremation has taken place. A register book will be available for signing from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday at Kitch Funeral Home, Liberal. Condolences may be sent to the family via www.kitchfuneralhome.com.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the American Cancer Society, in care of the funeral home, 1212 W. Second St., Liberal, KS 67901.

Octavia R. Smith

Johnson CITY - Funeral for Octavia R. Smith, 79, of Blanchard, Okla., was to be 11 this morning at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church of Blanchard, with the Rev. David Pickard officiating and Eisenhour Funeral Home of Blanchard handling arrangements.

Graveside service will be 2:30 p.m. Thursday in Stanton County Cemetery, Johnson City, with the Rev. Dave Kaufmann officiating and Garnand Funeral Home of Johnson City handling arrangements.

Mrs. Smith died Monday, Sept. 11, 2000, at the Senior Village Nursing Home in Blanchard.

She was born Feb. 21, 1921, at Cheraw, Colo., the daughter of Dave and Bessie (Williams) Morris. She grew up in Johnson City and made her home there until her failing health required her to move to Oklahoma to be near her daughters.

On Oct. 21, 1938, she married Walter R. "Buzz" Smith. They owned and operated the Ice House for a number of years and the Crystal Grill for a short time. She worked several years at the Coffee Cup Cafe and later drove a grain truck during harvest.

Mrs. Smith was a member of the United Methodist Church of Johnson City, VFW and Order of the Eastern Star No. 473 at Johnson City. She recently received her 50-year pin which was presented by OES No. 387 of Blanchard during a special ceremony at the Senior Village.

She was active in Girl and Cub Scouts while her children were growing up, enjoyed flowers and craft projects, and was an expert seamstress.

Survivors include two daughters, Rhota Jean Chapman, Blanchard, and Theda June Pearce, Blackwell, Okla.; a son, Larry Dean Smith, Dodge City; six grandchildren; two sisters, Pearl Wilson, Garden City, and Lavonna O'Donnell, Johnson City; 11 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, who died in 1989, she was preceded in death by an infant son, four brothers and one sister.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Building Fund of Blanchard or the Wesleyan Church Building Fund of Johnson City, in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 605 W. North Ave., Johnson City, KS 67855.
