Kenneth Carl Hartman

DIGHTON - Kenneth Carl Hartman, 75, died Saturday, Sept. 9, 2000, at his home in Dighton.

He was born Sept. 14, 1924, at LaCrosse, the son of Ben and Anna (Filbert) Hartman. The family moved to Lane County when he was 2. He attended Dighton schools and graduated from Dighton High School in 1942. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, serving in both theaters.

Mr. Hartman worked for 49 years as a farmer and stockman. He had beef and dairy cattle and he also ran a kennel in Lane County. He was a member of First Christian Church and had served on the Dighton Grade School Board at one time. He enjoyed camping, traveling and growing roses.

On Sept. 26, 1943, he married Mattie L. Martin at Dighton. She survives. He is also survived by three sons, Kenneth Hartman Jr., Kansas City, Mo., Keith Hartman and Stanley Hartman, both of Dighton; a daughter, Barbara Ott, Kingsville, Texas; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Evelyn Cartmill; and an infant brother, Ben Virgil Hartman.

Funeral will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at First Christian Church, Dighton, with the Revs. George Bever, Kerry Grogan and Mike Grogan officiating. Burial will be in Dighton Memorial Cemetery, with military graveside rites conducted by Dighton American Legion Post No. 190.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Boomhower Funeral Home, Dighton. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral home.

Katharine Loeppke

Memorial service for Katharine Loeppke, 78, of Broomfield, Colo., was 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Allenspark (Colo.) Community Church. A second service was 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Golden West Manor, Boulder, Colo.

Mrs. Loeppke died Thursday, Sept. 7, 2000, at Hospice of Boulder County in Louisville, Colo.

She was born Nov. 30, 1921, at Appleton City, Mo., the daughter of Vern Smithweaver and Lotha (Douglas) Crowder. She grew up in Liberal.

Mrs. Loeppke taught public schools and private music lessons in various towns in southwest Kansas and directed church choirs, most recently at Allenspark Community Church. She was a member of PQ Chapter of P.E.O., Kansas Music Teachers Association and LaTritone at Colorado Womens College.

She married Archie Roy Loeppke on Aug. 7, 1949, at Liberal. They lived in Lakin before moving to Boulder in 1990. They spent the summers in Raymond, Colo.

She is survived by her husband; three sons, Larry Loeppke, Skokie, Ill., Dr. Ronald Loeppke, Franklin, Tenn., and Bruce Loeppke, Sarasota, Fla.; two brothers, Hugh Crowder, Johnstown, Colo., and Ray Crowder, Boulder; five grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorials are suggested to the Kay Loeppke Music Memorial Fund, in care of Allenspark Church, P.O. Box 45, Allenspark, CO 80510 or the Golden West Foundation Music Fund, 1055 Adams Circle, Boulder, CO 80303.

Rundus Broomfield Funeral Home, Broomfield, was in charge of arrangements.

Charles Ray Kinney

SATANTA - Charles Ray Kinney, 45, of Satanta, died Thursday, Sept. 7, 2000, in Sublette.

He was born Jan. 14, 1955, at Hobbs, N.M., the son of Leroy and Bobbi Faye (Bridges) Kinney.

Mr. Kinney moved from Cuba, Mo., to Satanta on Feb. 5 to be near his daughter. A carpenter, he had served in the U.S. Army. He loved his grandchildren and enjoyed fishing.

He is survived by his daughter, JoyLee Lynn Owings, Satanta; his father and stepmother, Leroy and Judy Kinney, Andrews, Texas; two brothers, Oscar Leroy "Bud" Kinney, Houston, and Stacey Kinney, Lawton, Okla.; a half brother, Darrell "Bubba" Kinney, Odessa, Texas; a sister, Diane Stacy, Savannah, Tenn.; two stepsisters, Melissa Walbron, Andrews, and Tammy Roman, Houston; and two grandchildren.

Military graveside service will be 1 p.m. Monday in Dudley Township Cemetery, Satanta, with the Rev. David Erwin officiating. Military graveside rites will be conducted by Bravo Company, First Engineer Battalion, Fort Riley.

Visitation hours are from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today, 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday and 10 a.m. to noon Monday at Haskell County Funeral Home, Sublette. Memorials are suggested for the family and may be left at Shopping Stop True Value in Satanta or mailed to the funeral home, Box 607, Sublette, KS 67877.

Betty Fry

Funeral for Betty Fry, 47, will be 10 this morning at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City, with the Rev. Robert DeLeon officiating. Burial will take place Wednesday in Shenango Valley Cemetery in Greenville, Pa.

Mrs. Fry died Thursday, Sept. 7, 2000, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.

She was born Sept. 21, 1952, at Greenville, the daughter of Floyd and Dora (Locke) McClimans.

A Pennsylvania resident until moving to Garden City in December 1997, she had worked for many years as a salesperson, most recently at Payless Shoes. She enjoyed collecting frogs and playing bingo.

She is survived by her husband, Mike Simmons, of the home; a son, Rob Smith, Hubbard, Ohio; a daughter, Michele Elliott, Sharon, Pa.; two brothers, Jim McClimans, Alantic, Pa., and Doug McClimans, Greenville; two stepbrothers, Tom Christy and Bob Christy, both of Adamsville, Pa.; two stepsisters, Lori Zelker, Youngstown, Ohio, and Sue Mitchell, Greenville; and three grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Dennis McClimans.

Visitation hours are from 9 a.m. until service time today at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society, in care of the funeral home.

Margaret Ellen Bayer

Funeral for Margaret Ellen Bayer, 76, will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Mary Catholic Church, the Rev. James Baker officiating. Vigil services will be at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at St. Mary Catholic Church.

Interment will be at Valley View Cemetery.

Mrs. Bayer died Thursday, Sept. 7, 2000, at her home in Garden City.

She was born Aug. 24, 1924, in Turin. She was the daughter of John D. and Margaret E. (McGuire) Gatlin. Mrs. Bayer moved to Garden City in 1927 from Reno County. She was a homemaker.

Mrs. Bayer was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, both in Garden City.

On January 28, 1941, she married Joseph A. Bayer in Scott City. Mr. Bayer died April 18, 1983. She was also preceded in death by a brother, John D. Gatlin.

She is survived by six sons, Donald Bayer, Ponca City, Okla., Adam Bayer, Lester Bayer and Rex Bayer all of Garden City, Martin Bayer, Gentry Ark., and Karl Bayer of Pineville, Mo.; seven daughters, Catherine Base, Independence, Patricia Quint, Mesa, Ariz., Mary Ann Burrell, Siloam Springs, Ark., Jo Ellen Spears and Sharon Moran, both of New Port News, Va., Karen Lubbers and Toni Martin, both of Garden City; one brother, Paul Gatlin, Garden City; four sisters, Beulah McVey and Doris Warren, both of Miltonvale, Cecil Billings, Scott City, and Paula Puterbaugh, Salida, Colo.; 31 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

Visitation hours are noon to 8 p.m. today and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday at Price & Sons Funeral Home.

Memorials are suggested to the Margaret E. Bayer Memorial Fund in care of Price & Sons Funeral Home.

Paul O. Masoner

Funeral for Paul O. Masoner, 82, will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the Presbyterian Church, Garden City, with the Revs. Dave Sweley and Randy Caddell officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.

Mr. Masoner died Thursday, Sept. 7, 2000, at his home in Garden City.

He was born March 31, 1918, at Brock, Neb., the son of Harry O. and Selma L. (Anderson) Masoner. He received his bachelor's degree in education from the University of Kansas in 1939.

A banker and past chairman of the board of the Centera Bank and Santa Fe Bank Shares of Haskell County, he had been a resident of Garden City since 1945, moving from Kansas City, Mo.

Mr. Masoner was a member of the Presbyterian Church, Rotary Club, Southwind Country Club, Masonic Lodge, American Legion, Downtown Coffee Club and the Chamber of Commerce, was involved with many other civic boards and organizations, and was a former school board president and baseball coach.

He also belonged to the KU Alumni Association and the Williams Education Fund, was a past KU Athletic Board and KU School of Business Advisory Board member, and was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.

On Dec. 28, 1940, he married Margaret McCoy at Garden City. She died Nov. 29, 1986. He was also preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.

He married Hobba Jones on June 22, 1989, at Garden City. She survives. He is also survived by a son, Richard McCoy Masoner, Tucson, Ariz.; two daughters, Paula M. Lohmeier, Overland Park, and Meredith M. Vandemark, Colorado Springs, Colo.; a stepson, Ivan Clark, Guymon, Okla.; two stepdaughters, Vicki Caddell, Garden City, and Anita Peterson, Liberal; a brother, Joseph H. Masoner, Sun City Center, Fla.; 14 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Visitation hours are until 9 tonight and from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to the church, Lee Richardson Zoo or the KU Athletic Department, all in care of the funeral home, 620 N. Main St.
