Arvena Laudick

Arvena Laudick, 97, died Friday Sept. 1, 2000, at the Central Kansas Medical Center in Larned.

Ms. Laudick was a lifetime resident of Hoisington and was born to Daniel and Pauline Miller on April 25, 1903.

She married Joseph H. Laudick in Hoisington on Jan. 13, 1923.

Ms. Laudick was a member of the St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church and Altar Society in Hoisington.

Services were held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 5 ,2000, at the Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in Hoisington. The reverend Angel Dye was officiated and burial at the St. John Church Cemetery followed.

Ms. Laudick is survived by one son, Leslie Laudick, of Hoisington; one daughter, Joyce Donovan, of Scott City; two sisters Elsie Keener and Dorothy Hester both of Hoisington; eight grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and nine great great grandchildren.

Ms. Laudick's husband, one son, one brother and four sisters died earlier.

Memorials may be sent to the St. Joseph Hospital Special Care Unit.

Elsie F. Winter

Elsie F. Winter, 95, died Friday, Sept. 1, 2000, at the Greeley County Hospital in Tribune.

Ms. Winter was born in Luray, Kan., on Oct. 7, 1904, and was the daughter of Roscoe E. and Martha Shull Whiteman.

Ms. Winter moved from Sterling to Greeley County in 1990.

She married Fred Winter in Dodge City on Aug. 10, 1934.

She was a member of the Eastern Star and Rebekah Lodge in Tribune.

Services were conducted at 10 a.m. (MDT) on Monday, Sept. 4, 2000, at the Price & Sons Funeral Home in Tribune. Gary DuPree officiated. Burial followed in the Greeley County Cemetery.

Ms. Winter is survived by one son, Waive Winter, of Tribune; two daughters Martha Hamous of Sterling and Yvonne Folsom of Tribune; one sister, Alene Hurley, of Los Animas Colo.; and five grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren and seven great-great grandchildren.

Ms. Winter's husband, one son, two sisters and two brothers died earlier.

Memorials may be sent to the Elsie Winter Memorial Fund at the funeral home.

Marvin Dean Carter

ULYSSES - Marvin Dean Carter, 73, died Sept. 4, 2000, at Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital, Ulysses.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, Aug. 8, 2000, at 10 a.m. at St. Timothy's Episcopal Church, Hugoton, with the Rev. Floyd Daharsh officiating. Mr. Carter was cremated and inurnment will be at The National Cemetery at Mobile, Ala., at a later date.

Mr. Carter was born March 3, 1927, at Ulysses, the son of John Victor and Bernice (Brewer) Carter, a lifetime resident of Ulysses.

He was a heavy equipment operator, worked for the City of Ulysses for a number of years, served in the United States Navy and was a member of St. Timothy's Episcopal Church, Hugoton.

He married Lorraine Mae (Maul) Wagoner of Joplin, Mo. She survives. On Aug. 22, 1987, he married Anna Mae (Billingsley) Carter at Ulysses. She survives.

Other survivors include his mother, Bernice Carter of Ulysses; two sons, Tom Carter and Gary Carter, both of Ulysses; two daughters, Carolyn Lee of Columbus, Texas, and Joyce Olds of Wichita; 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; three sisters, Betty Walls and Norma Darlene Horner, both of Ulysses, and Elaine Gierhart of Colby.

He was preceded in death by a son, Larry Dean Carter.

Memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, or to St. Timothy's Episcopal Church, Hugoton, in care of Garnand Funeral Home, Ulysses.

Helen Louise Lindeman

SUBLETTE - Helen Louise Lindeman, 96, died early Monday, Sept. 4, 2000, at Satanta District Hospital, Satanta. She had been a resident of the Satanta Long Term Care Unit for 11 years.

Funeral will be Thursday, Sept. 7, 2000, at 10:30 a.m. at the Christian Church, Sublette, with the Rev. David Erwin presiding and burial in Haskell County Cemetery.

Mrs. Lindeman was born June 24, 1904, in Harvey County, the daughter of Norman and Elva (Kline) Jacobs. The family moved to Minneola in 1908, then to Colwich in 1913. She went two years to high school in Newton, then finished high school at Wichita East. She taught elementary school in Sedgwick and Haskell counties.

She and W.F. "Jack" Lindeman were married Dec. 24, 1927, at Belpre. She moved from Wichita to Sublette in 1925, where she and her husband farmed. She was an early pioneer of western Kansas, seeing many changes and accepting them as part of life.

She was a past member of Sosuntee Club, Read A Book and Pride of Life, all of Sublette.

Survivors include two sons, Jack N. Lindeman, Sublette, and Gerald D. Lindeman, Manhattan; six grandchildren; seven great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her husband and three brothers.

Haskell County Funeral Home, Sublette, is in charge of arrangements. Friends may call Tuesday and Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mattie V. Mathes

Mattie V. Mathes, 92, died Thursday, Aug. 31, 2000, at Park Lane Nursing Home in Scott City.

She was born Oct. 25, 1907, in Logan County, the daughter of James Wiley and Ida Elizabeth (Patton) Farr. She attended Scott Community High School in Scott City.

On Aug. 2, 1926, she married Carl Mathes at Dighton. They farmed in the Healy area before moving to Garden City in 1975 after they sold the farm.

Although they had no children of their own, Mrs. Mathes and her husband always welcomed the children of the community into their home. Her special interest was her large doll collection. She also enjoyed fishing, and attending auctions and garage sales.

Her husband died Oct. 27, 1983. She was also preceded in death by four sisters, Ollie Jane Patison, Mary Elizabeth McCormick, Murttis Cook and Blanchie McGuire; and three brothers, Oliver Farr, Kenneth Farr and James Farr.

She is survived by two brothers, Clellan Farr, Wichita, and Francis Farr, Oberlin; two sisters, Cordelia Allen and Lena Russell, both of Scott City; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City, with the Rev. Robert Cousins officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.

Visitation hours are from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and Sunday and 9 a.m. to service time Monday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Park Lane Nursing Home, in care of the funeral home.

Mary A. Woods

TRIBUNE - Vigil service for Mary A. Woods, 76, will be 7 MDT tonight at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Tribune. Funeral will be 10 a.m. MDT Saturday at the church, with the Revs. Jun Mangulabnan and Michael Helm officiating. Burial will be in Greeley County Cemetery, Tribune.

Mrs. Woods died Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2000, at Greeley County Hospital in Tribune.

She was born Dec. 24, 1923, at St. Peter, the daughter of Mike P. and Rosalia (Schreiner) Dinkel.

A Greeley County resident since 1925, she was a homemaker and had been the bookkeeper for the Garvey Elevator in Tribune from 1965 until her retirement in 1989.

Mrs. Woods was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, St. Joseph Altar Society, VFW Ladies Auxiliary, North Tribune E.H.U. and several Tribune bridge clubs and was a 4-H project leader.

On Oct. 9, 1945, she married Henry Woods at Tribune. He survives. She is also survived by two sons, Eugene and Curtis, both of Tribune; a daughter, Mary Louise Judd, Moscow; a brother, C. John Dinkel, Redwood, Calif.; three sisters, Regina Wendt, Tribune, Leona Billinger, Garden City, and Margaret Carter, Aurora, Colo.; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, a grandson and a great-granddaughter.

Memorials are suggested to the church or Greeley County Hospital, both in care of Price & Sons Funeral Home, Tribune.
