Cleva Belle "Momma K" Kendall

Funeral for Cleva Belle "Momma K" Kendall, 82, of Mullinville, will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Mullinville United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Bob Smith officiating and an Order of Eastern Star service conducted. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery, Mullinville.

Mrs. Kendall died Saturday, Oct. 21, 2000, at Kiowa County Memorial Hospital in Greensburg.

She was born Feb. 14, 1918, on the family farm south of Denison, the daughter of John William and Floris Dell (White) Brown.

On May 15, 1938, she married Howard C. Kendall at Farmington. They moved to Mullinville in 1949 when they purchased the Mullinville Telephone Co., where she was an operator running the switchboard. Later, she worked at Gables Cafe and then managed Kendall's Country Store for 20 years. She wrote a weekly column for the Merchant's Directory which she, her husband and their son have published since 1969, and quilted with the quilters at Mullinville Methodist Church.

Mrs. Kendall was a member of Mullinville United Methodist Church and Busy Bee Sewing Circle, and was a past matron and 50-year member of Narcissus Chapter No. 398 of the Order of the Eastern Star, Mullinville, which is now the Star of Hope Chapter No. 193, Greensburg. She was past district aide of the Grand Chapter of Kansas and a member of the Past Matrons organization.

She is survived by her husband; a son, Paul, Mullinville; five daughters, Maureen Hendrick, Morris, Ill., Anne Coates, Leonard, Okla., Nola Vice, Dodge City, Rachel Moorman, Garden City, and Margaret Osborn, Mullinville; 31 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren.

Visitation hours are until 9 tonight at Fleener Chapel, Greensburg. Memorials are suggested to Southwind Hospice or the church, both in care of the funeral home, Box 426, Greensburg, KS 67054.

L. Raymond Harkness

SCOTT CITY - L. Raymond Harkness, 84, of Lawrence, died Wednesday, Oct. 18, 2000, at Colonial Manor of Lawrence.

He was born May 30, 1916, in Scott County, the son of Charles E. and Deliah (Deng) Harkness.

Mr. Harkness was shop foreman at Harkness Ford Motors at Leoti, retiring in the 1980s when he moved from Scott City to Lawrence. He was also a farmer/rancher.

He was a member of First Christian Church of Scott City, IOOF Lodge No. 4 and Friendship Rebekah Lodge No. 754, both at Lawrence, a former member of the VIP Board at Scott City and had been an advocate for seniors of Kansas. An avid sports fan, he also enjoyed gardening.

On Aug. 15, 1972, he married Mildred Evelyn Yates at Leoti. She survives. Other survivors are a daughter, Dr. Gail Harkness, Kansas City; a son, D.W. "Skip" Harkness, Reston, Va.; a foster son, Vinciente Gobuyan, Glouchester, Canada; three sisters, Esther Martin, Branson, Mo., Naomi Yager, Scott City, and Nadine Barclay, Cupertino, Calif.; a brother, Kenneth Harkness, Columbus, Ohio; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and five foster grandchildren. He was preceded in death by five brothers and five sisters.

Memorial service will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home, Lawrence, followed by a Lodge service by IOOF No. 4. Inurnment will be 1 p.m. Oct. 28 in Leoti Cemetery, with the Rev. Rick Woolard officiating.

Memorials are suggested to the Lawrence Memorial Hospital Oncology Department, in care of the funeral home, Box 1260, Lawrence, KS 66044; or Price & Sons Funeral Home, Leoti, which is in charge of local arrangements.

William "Bill" Hanford Amos

William "Bill" Hanford Amos, 91, of Garden City died Friday, Oct. 20, 2000 at Pioneer Lodge Nursing Home in Coldwater.

He was born June 28, 1909 in Russelville, Miss., the son of John M. and Coraley S. Brunk Amos. He was a World War II veteran, having served in the Ninth Armored Division. On April 9, 1944, he married Catherine A. Brown, who survives.

A Garden City resident since 1948, Mr. Amos retired in 1974 as a landscape architect for the Kansas Department of Transportation. He was lifetime VFW member, past Boy Scout Master of Troop No. 108 and also belonged to the First United Methodist Church, Garden City and the Finney County Senior Center.

Survivors include a son, John E. Amos, Garden City; two daughters, Sandra J. Estabrook, Dodge City, and Karen Kay DeWerff, Wichita; two sisters, Carlie Rutledge, Independence, Mary Lee Harlan, Port Charlotte, Fla.; and a brother, Clarence Amos, Russelville, Miss.; 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers.

Calling hours at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Garden City are from noon to 8 p.m. Saturday, noon to 8 p.m. Sunday and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday. Family members will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

The service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the First United Methodist Church, with internment following at Valley View Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested for the Alzheimer's Kansas Unit Association, in care of Price & Sons.

Clyde Alvin Smith

Clyde Alvin Smith, 84, of Sun Lakes, Ariz., died Wednesday, Oct. 18, 2000, at Chandler (Ariz.) Regional Hospital.

He was born April 4, 1916, at Ensign, the son of Ward Brown and Dora (McIntire) Smith. He attended schools at Bloom.

Mr. Smith owned and operated the Pay-Day IGA grocery store in Dodge City in the 1960s. During World War II, he served in the U.S. armed forces. He and his wife, Dorothy (Preston) Smith, moved to Sun Lakes 12 years ago.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Donna S. Moore-Ede, Wellesley Farms, Mass., and Patty Nelson, Sedona, Ariz.; two sons, Larry Smith, Lamar, Colo., and Stephen Ward Smith, Montrose, Colo.; a sister, Josephine Esquibel, Dodge City; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

A memorial service was scheduled for today at First Baptist Church of Sun Lakes. Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Monday in Cimarron Cemetery, Cimarron, with military graveside rites conducted by Howard Gotschall VFW Post No. 1714.

Swaim Funeral Home, Dodge City, is in charge of arrangements.

Arthur B. "Bud" Williams

ULYSSES - Arthur B. "Bud" Williams, 77, of Ulysses, died Wednesday, Oct. 18, 2000, at Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital in Ulysses.

He was born July 10, 1923, at Halstead, the son of Oral P. and Maree (Maryfield) Williams. When he was a young child, the family moved to Ulysses.

A farmer and rancher, Mr. Williams was a member of St. John Episcopal Church of Ulysses, had served on the Ulysses School Board and the REA Board and was a 4-H leader.

On Dec. 14, 1941, he married Ruby M. King at Garden City. She survives. Other survivors are a daughter, Kathy McGillivray, Ulysses; a son, Bob Williams, Amarillo, Texas; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Dale Williams; and a sister, Inez Williams.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at St. John's Episcopal Church, Ulysses, with the Revs. Dennis Zimmerman and Floyd Daharsh officiating. Burial will follow in Ulysses Cemetery.

Visitation hours are from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and Friday at Garnand Funeral Home, Ulysses. Memorials are suggested to the church or the donor's choice, both in care of the funeral home, 405 W. Grant St., Ulysses, KS 67880.

Jack Clifford Ellison

SYRACUSE - Jack Clifford Ellison, 89, died Monday, Oct. 16, 2000, at Hamilton County Hospital in Syracuse.

Born at Syracuse on Sept. 25, 1911, he was the son of Ed and Bess (Warner) Ellison. A lifetime resident of Syracuse, he graduated from Syracuse High School.

Mr. Ellison was employed by the Kansas Highway Patrol from 1939 to 1942 and was an insurance salesman for Mutual of Omaha Insurance Companies. He was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps, enjoyed outdoor activities and building with his hands, and was an animal lover.

On Sept. 4, 1936, he married Audace Bray. She died April 4, 1985. He was also preceded in death by his mother and father; and a son, Rod Ellison, in 1997.

He is survived by four grandchildren, Cedric Ellison of Denmark, Eric Ellison, Greeley, Colo., Jennifer Adams, Wichita, and Jeff Thad Ellison, Austin, Texas; and four great-grandchildren.

Cremation will take place with a private memorial service to be conducted.

In special recognition to Mr. Ellison's service as a peace officer, the Hamilton County Sheriff's Department will fly the flag for the next week and the Kansas Highway Patrol will honor him in its information bulletin.

Memorials are suggested to the Hamilton County Sheriff's Department, in care of Greene-Fellers Funeral Home & Monuments, P.O. Box 1253, Syracuse, KS 67878.

Walter C. Woodcock

HUGOTON - Walter C. Woodcock, 91, of McMinnville, Ore., died Saturday, Oct. 14, 2000, at Oakwood County Place in McMinnville.

Born at Hugoton on Sept. 19, 1909, he was the son of Charles W. and Maggie (Stafford) Woodcock.

Mr. Woodcock was a refrigeration engineer, worked for Standard Oil in Aruba and was a member of Amity First Baptist Church in Oregon. He had a great love of trees and planted his farm with every tree native to the state of Oregon.

On July 6, 1931, he married Marguerite H. Schellborn at Lawrence. She survives. Other survivors include a daughter, Iris Austin, Keizer, Ore.; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Friday in Hugoton Cemetery, with the Rev. David Sweley officiating.

Visitation hours are from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday at Paul's Funeral Home, Hugoton.
