Ernest Ray Schmidt

ULYSSES - Ernest Ray Schmidt, 66, Ulysses, died Saturday, Oct. 7, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Shelton Memorial Christian Church with Rev. Bill Harrold presiding. Graveside services will 2:30 p.m. at Fairview Cemetery, Greensburg.

Schmidt was born July 1, 1934, at Greensburg, the son of Willie and Pearl (Schmidt) Schmidt.

He spent his boyhood days on a farm east of Mullinville, were he attended school. He was employed in the natural gas industry where in 1954 he began working for the Cities Service Gas Company in Greensburg. He would later join the Northwest Central Pipeline in Rawlins, Wyo., and end his career with Williams Natural Gas Company in Ulysses.

Schmidt entered Foreman training at Emporia and later became a superintendent at Chanute. He was promoted to district superintendent at Kansas City, later being promoted to district manager at Ulysses, a position he held until retiring in 1993. He entered specialized training programs while with Cities Service and participated in continuing education programs at the University of Kansas.

He was a member of the Shelton Memorial Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). As a longtime member of the Christian Church DOC, he served as a youth sponsor, deacon, elder, choir member and on various committees. He was a past member of the Kawanis Club.

On July 1, 1956, he married Mary Ellen Headrick at Mullinville. She survives. Other survivors include one son, Gregory Lee Schmidt, Gardner; and one daughter, Shelly Rae Schmidt, Olathe. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Lavona Kilgore.

Visitation hours are from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at Garnand Funeral Home in Ulysses.

Family requests memorials to the Shelton Memorial Christian Church Fireside Room fund or the Shelton Memorial Christian Church, Colorado Christian Home, in care of Garnand Funeral home, 405 W. Grant, Ulysses.

Jessie Marie Linton

HUGOTON - Funeral for Jessie Marie Linton, 81, will be held Monday at 10:30 a.m. at First Christian Church of Hugoton with the Rev. Rod Hinkle officiating. Burial will follow at Hugoton Cemetery.

Mrs. Linton died Oct. 5, 2000, at the Southwest Medical Center in Liberal.

She was born Sept. 21, 1919, in Dermot, the daughter of Mack Brewer and Jessie A. Thornhill Brewer. Mrs. Linton had lived in Hugoton since 1978 and retired there from Utah, where she had spent 25 years in ministry with her husband.

Mrs. Linton was a secretary and bookkeeper at the Hugoton Hermes and a homemaker. She was an active member of the First Christian Church, where she taught Sunday school and conducted children's church, Bible study and the Chalk Art Ministry.

On Aug. 20, 1950, she married William K. Linton in San Jose, Calif. Mr. Linton died Oct. 15, 1994.

Mrs. Linton is survived by two sons, Byron Linton of Grand Junction, Colo., and William Linton of Depoe Bay, Ore.; one daughter, Carol Craig of Clatskanie, Ore.; one brother, Morton Brewer of Hugoton; three sisters, Doris Rolle of Mexico, Mo., Mary Lou Edmondson of Bolivar, Mo., and Irene Morris of Ulysses; and 10 grandchildren.

Memorials are suggested to Ozark Christian College in Joplin, Mo., in care of Paul's Funeral Home in Hugoton.

Winfred Roy Shivers

SALINA - Winfred Roy Shivers, 80, of Concordia, died Oct. 7, 2000, at Salina Regional Health Center, Salina.

Known to his family as "Nuke," Mr. Shivers was born April 28, 1920, near Delphos to William Preston and Mary Catherine Shivers.

In 1937, he graduated from school near Delphos and then attended vocational school in Lincoln, Neb. He worked in the Baltimore shipyards prior to serving in the military during World War II, where he spent 26 months in the South Pacific.

Mr. Shivers was a lifetime farmer until retiring in 1989.

On Jan. 3,1942, he married Mildred A. Parks in Abilene. Survivors include his wife, three daughters, Sue Adams, Beliot, Lelia Kagle, Salina, Mary Torrez, Winfield; five sons, William Shivers, Morganville, Richard Shivers, Abilene, Gregory Shivers, Abilene, Jeryld, Ft. Collins, Colo., and Douglas Shivers, Garden City; a sister, Claudena Manual, Northridge, Calif.; and a brother, Raymond, Cherryvale; 22 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and two sisters.

Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Nutter Mortuary Chapel, Concordia. Visitation is from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Nutter Mortuary. Memorials are suggested to St. Jude Children's Hospital. Burial will be at Delphos Cemetery.

Juanita Boyer

SCOTT CITY - Juanita Boyer, 92, died Sunday, Oct. 8, 2000, at Park Lane Nursing Home in Scott City.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Scott County Cemetery, Scott City. The Rev. Lynne Smith will officiate.

Boyer was born June 26, 1908, at Arlington, Colo., the daughter of James and Anna (Christy) Gilliland.

She was a resident of Scott City since the early 1920s, moving from Arlington, Colo.

She had been the past owner and operator of the Scott City News Chronicle and was a member of the United Methodist Church, Scott City.

On Aug. 8, 1930, she married John A. Boyer at Scott City. He died Nov. 2, 1972, at Scott City.

She is survived by two sons, Bill and Jim Boyer, both of Scott City; seven grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

Visitation hours are from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Price and Sons Funeral Home in Scott City. Memorials are suggested to the Juanita Boyer Memorial Fund in care of Price and Sons Funeral Home.

Clifton Algrim

Funeral for Clifton Algrim, 76, will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Church of the Nazarene, Garden City, with the Rev. Craig Coulter officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.

Mr. Algrim died Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2000, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.

He was born Sept. 16, 1924, at Montezuma, the son of Albert G. and Cecil (Thomas) Algrim. He began school in Montezuma before the family moved in 1932 to Finney County, where he finished school.

A lifelong farmer and rancher in Finney County, he served on the Garden City Co-op Board for 12 years and was a school bus driver for many years.

Mr. Algrim was a member of Church of the Nazarene and Gideon International. His special interests were traveling, his grandchildren's activities and his church work. He was the children's church director and youth director, and coached the youth church basketball team and the basketball team at Theoni School when his children attended the school. He was also involved in delivering Gideon Bibles to the schools and had gone overseas to four work mission trips through the church.

On Dec. 16, 1945, he married Isile Fern Rose at Lakin .She died June 26, 1976. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Marie Montgomery.

On Nov. 26, 1977, he married Arlene Burnett at Garden City. She survives. He is also survived by two sons, Terry Algrim and Tim Algrim, both of Garden City; a daughter, Tamara Carter, Garden City; a stepson, Tim Burnett, Garland, Texas; a stepdaughter, Deborah Bullock, Garden City; a brother, Irwin Algrim, Garden City; a sister, Mildred Hands, Garden City; six grandchildren; and five stepgrandchildren.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to Gideon International, in care of the funeral home.

Earl Lee Fry

Funeral for Earl Lee Fry, 92, of Dodge City, will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Swaim Funeral Home, Dodge City, with Dr. Michael F. Gardner officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Montezuma.

Mr. Fry died Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2000, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.

He was born May 24, 1908, in Gray County, the son of Martin L. and Stella (Fisher) Fry. He graduated from Montezuma High School and Friends University.

Mr. Fry was a business partner with his father and brother in Montezuma, owning Fry & Sons Lumber, Hardware and Implements. He was also involved in farming and ranching.

A resident of Gray County for 46 years and of Dodge City for 45 years, he was a member of the First United Methodist Church, was a 32nd degree Mason, and belonged to the Midian Shrine and the Sons of the American Revolution. He belonged to Ensign Masonic Lodge No. 413, where he was a 50-year member, past master, and past district and deputy grandmaster.

On May 12, 1935, he married Dora R. Friesen at Montezuma. She survives. He is also survived by a son, Luther L. Fry, Garden City; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at Swaim Funeral Home, Dodge City. Memorials are suggested to Fry Memorial Vision Center, in care of the funeral home.
